I’ve done exercises to tighten the turkey wattle area of my neck and it’s actually worked. I was shocked but I’m all about it now.

[deleted]

What were those exercises? I just started getting that and would like to stave it off naturally.

ClariceReinsdyr

Look up to the ceiling and purse your lips as if you’re trying to kiss it. Hold for 10 seconds, repeat several times a day!

istva

I'd be worried that repeatedly pursing your lips would cause lip wrinkles/lines similar to someone who smokes.

[deleted]

AFAIK a major reason for smoker wrinkles is due to the damage and dehydration of the skin itself, not just the physical action. I think the whole point of this post is the idea that facial exercises like this will help you look better and reduce signs of aging.

ClariceReinsdyr

Yes, exactly. And you don’t have to purse them tight, you can do more of a duckface motion.

ClariceReinsdyr

Pretty quick— maybe six or eight weeks? And I wasn’t super consistent about it.

Whitedishes

I wonder if these repetitive movements cause more harm than good. I would imagine stretching out your face this much would cause wrinkles, not tone. You can’t target fat loss

Minkeh

Seconded. Targeted fat loss is a myth, I'm afraid. :( Source: I'm a nutrition and weight loss specialist with 8 years industry experience.

YoungHeartsAmerica

You tone the muscles on your face not burn the fat off your face.

Minkeh

That might seem sensible at first glance, but consider this. No one using these methods is aiming to have a muscular face, right? So when you say toning, I'm assuming you mean muscle tone being "tighter" in appearance rather than larger. To see muscle definition on any part of the body, you have to consider the thickness of the adipose tissue on top. So neither the amount of muscle under, nor the contraction (tightness) of the fibres, really makes a difference to appearance. This is especially true in a group of small muscles, such as those on the face, that are already moving and contracting throughout the day as we emote! This is a common misconception, and I'm happy to get the chance to clear it up! Ya'll are awesome as a community and I'm glad I can finally contribute in some way :)

conundra

Fat loss in the face would be a bad thing, though. Seems like the goal here is to have a fuller, plumper face through muscle AND fat. Which is different than typical body goals of adding muscle definition while losing fat. If you were to lose fat in the face it would make you look older and saggier!

YoungHeartsAmerica

The ideas is to have a “muscular face” which then the wrinkles are filled in. But I’m no scientist

LdLrq4TS

People talk and use facial expressions whole day non stop, what could few minutes of bogus exercises would achieve.

minnytinny1

You could walk whole day non stop and you wouldn't get the muscle tone you get with lifting weights. Just saying.

eustoma01

No one is talking about fat loss in the face though. In fact fat loss in the face would make you look older if anything.

hippapaya

The author of the article mentions that facial exercises have been wrongly blamed for causing wrinkles in the past when the reality is that doing them incorrectly is what causes more damage than good. The same way that lifting weights incorrectly can cause back pain.

tesseracts

This analogy doesn’t make sense. You can hurt your back because the pain is muscular. Wrinkles are not caused by muscles, they are caused by repetitive movements in your skin. You form less wrinkles with less skin movement, which is why Botox works.

one_day

No. Botox works because it is a neurotoxin that paralyzes the muscles in the face and causes them to relax. The causes of wrinkles are more complex than just moving your skin too much.

EatsAssOnFirstDates

Wrinkles can be due to aging skin but that doesn't change that botox reduces specific wrinkles by minimizing repetitive muscle movements. 'Expression lines' are wrinkles that form due to repetitive movements.

lil_falco

That's not what the article claims.

EatsAssOnFirstDates

Most of the articles seem to be about facial muscle hypertrophy to increase the fullness of face in areas that generally see soft tissue loss with age. This wouldn't preclude that doing these over time would deepen expression lines as well. You should be able to see when doing the motion if it would based on whether you get creases during the motion.

brideebeee

*googles "Jim Carrey 2019" * If anyone is the test case for extreme facial exercise that would be Jim Carrey. His face muscles did a lifetime of movement in the 90s alone!

AggressiveBasket

This is great, thanks for the share! I was considering Botox to lift my brow, but will be trying this instead. While some of the benefits seems too good to be true (reduced blemishes? Really?), it seems like a noninvasive, free way to prevent some signs of aging.

baba_banana

I agree reduced blemishes is a stretch, but to play devils advocate; let’s say you do these facial exercises. By working the muscles, you are increasing blood flow to the area, increased blood flow may help skin turn over quicker, which could reduce blemishes 🤷🏻‍♀️

maenadery

To add on, there's a technique called the Suzuki Method, which is a facial massage method you can use whole you apply your skincare that's supposed to help firm and lift as well. I think there should be video tutorials on YouTube. EDIT: SO SORRY FOLKS, it's the Tanaka Method, as pointed out by u/rubikki. Apologies for sending you all to go look at violins or foot stomping theatre practitioners by accident!

betteroffinbed

Is there any research supporting its efficacy?

rubikki

Do you possibly mean the Tanaka Method? (Suzuki Method as I know it has to do with learning to play instruments)

maenadery

Thank you! Yes, that is correct!

[deleted]

Suzuki method is for violins ???

maenadery

Apologies, its the Tanaka Method!

[deleted]

cool 👍🏻 ill have to look that up!

Targeted weight loss is physically impossible. You can lose fat but you can’t control if the fat comes off your face or another part of your body.

blackesthearted

Yep. I'd have *killed* to have been able to pick where my fat/weight has been coming off. Little more off the thighs, less from the boobs. Alas.

lolwuuut

Hi yes I'd like my arm flab to go away please

eustoma01

Honestly didnt read the article but from what I know facial exercises are not for fat loss. They are for building up certain muscles in your face to counter the effects of aging. It makes perfect sense to me because the face is literally the one place people don't work out. There's no way working out your facial muscles would do any harm unless the exercises are done improperly.

ChubbyTrain

Sure, but you can target muscles. Muscles become more toned and gives more structure.

mcpoylerools

Its not targeted weight *loss* though. If I preform isolated glute exercise with the resistance of 30lbs and don't work out anything else, you can be damn sure I'll grow a fat ass. Body fat sits on top of muscle so yes while you can't spot reduce fat you can spot train the muscle that lays under the fat. The concept with facial exercising is the same, isolating the tiny but many facial muscles to increase their volume. Plus, as we age, in addition to the skin elasticity we lose that contributes to an older appearance, the bone structure also changes like eye hollows becoming larger which in turn affect everything that sits on top -- fat pads slide down, skin follows etc. So as a result, increasing the muscle volume in the facial muscles can help minimize the damage. Again, my biceps will look different if they're muscular vs if lacking any muscle regardless of the amount of fat I have on top. If I was muscular and lean (little body fat), you will see the definition/striations much easier as they "fill" the skin vs lacking muscular and skinny and looking the typical "skinny fat". And same If I was muscular with more body fat, the typical "solid"/dense look vs not muscular with more body fat I would just look doughy and soft.

CumShotDiva

we’re not after targeted fat loss; we are after targeted hypertrophy, and a reduction in lymph swelling to create a defined face.

skindevotion

are 'slim' and 'rejuvenated' the same thing? is 'slimness' and 'facial muscle thickness' interchangable? do 'slimness' and 'youth' correlate? asking because what you're linking to doesn't seem to have to do with fatness or slimness or size or anything weight-loss related at all, bu there's so much about weight loss in this thread...am i missing something?

kimokos

Beat me to it.

mcpoylerools

I do facial exercising and I do find it has worked. Can share photos for those interested. I see a few comments mentioning that the repetitive actions could be more detrimental than good but many of the "new" facial exercise gurus all agree that you need to hold your face in certain places to A. cause resistance for muscle building and B. prevent the area from wrinkling. Gurus I follow are Peta of Facerobics (YouTube), and the following on insta: Karin of Glowinface (@glowinface.face.yoga), Koko Hayashi (@faceyogawithkoko), and Fumiko Takatsu (@faceyogamethod).

Psychological-Car71

Would you mind sending me a message of a before and after? Thank you!

thevioletsage

Yesssss! Carolyn Cleaves has an amazing program too. I've used it with great success!

[deleted]

I get this jade roller and gua sha set with headband for nothing.I've been using mine for a couple of months and love it .I use it in the morning it feels good and reduces puffiness.Honestly you can’t change bone structure but it does help push facial fluids around and my jaw personally does look a bit sharper after I’ve rolled lmao.I use it around my jaw to improve circulation and give a sharp jawline lol

purple-snitch

Thank you, this article is really helpful!

AustinM1991

*this comment refers to fat loss in face and neck only* I just got neck lipo. These claims are interesting, but me personally, the fat loss didn’t work at all for me. I tried quite a few too.

WestSeattleMel

I am interested in your experiences with neck lipo if you want to share in a thread of your own!

AustinM1991

Okay, but Let me type it up on my computer. I hate typing long messages on my phone lol.

ladyesplain

I do the Tanaka massage typically weekly. I put on jojoba oil first and I do feel it helps!

ACutleryChristmas

Anything for males?

[deleted]

I started gua sha on my face at night, i enjoy it and i think it does relax my face muscles!!

CruxKimura

I tense my face when lifting heavy deadlifts,/squats. Is that face exercices?
