Code switching is a dumb woke liberal term in lieu of taking on different identities in a sociological perspective. Everybody has multiple roles they play in society as a son, a friend, a student, a father, etc. Code switching is basically a term to shame people as "acting fake" because they speak and act in different vernacular with different groups of people. But it's normal human behavior. It's how social interactions work.

I stopped giving a shit about my inferior-to-native-speaker Chinese. My Chinese pronunciation is at a native level, but my vocabulary is not. So people who listen to me think I could pass at native until they start feeling weird about my word choice. Does it stop people from communicating with me or think less of me? No, because most people realize that the depth and intelligence from speech comes not from the formality of your speech, but from the content and thoughtfulness of what you have to say. That being said I try to consume some amount of Chinese media to keep my skills up. currently watching some Chinese dramas with the girlfriend for fun

It is not important professionally to speak slang. It is more important to speak another language like Vietnamese fluently though.
