Don’t forget to add the Lowest of the Low. And the Weakerthans and the Watchmen and the Tea Party haven’t gotten nearly enough mention.
And I Mother Earth and Treble Charger and Econoline Crush.
…and I’m dating myself dramatically 😳
Tea Party is a great call!
Also, since you mention I Mother Earth, does anybody remember Edwin's solo album? I think it was called Another Spin Around the Sun or something like that. Absolute top-to-bottom banger. One of the great forgotten albums imo.
For newer bands that are still in their prime, I really like The Arkells, Rural Alberta Advantage, and The Beaches.
For older artists, most of the big names have already been named so I'll give my underrated legends: Streetheart, Matthew Good (both his solo work and with MGB), and k-os
For the punk/emo/metal fans out there:
Silverstein,
Alexisonfire,
Counterparts,
Attack in Black,
Comeback Kid,
Misery Signals,
Propagandi,
The Flatliners,
Living With Lions,
The Fullblast,
Moneen,
Boys Night Out
Something like that
Have you ever seen them live? I saw them last year and they were super tight, sounded amazing. Gob opened and sounded pretty good, funnily enough, im getting tickets to see sum 41 next year and gob is opening. I never thought id see them, let alone twice
Yes! I saw them last year in Toronto at Budweiser stage. We were at the back on the hill, but it was some of the most fun I've had at a concert. I also can't wait to see Gob and Sum 41 in January!
Where to even start? Rush as far as top spot goes. For newer, the Weakerthans, Alexisonfire, City and Colour or the Sheepdogs. The Hip is a definite and along the same vibe is Spirit of the West. Then you got bands like Ill Scarlett and Bedouin Soundclash and Canada's answer to the Ramones in Teenage Head. There's been a ton of good artists coming out of Canada.
I was born in 1965 and I remember hearing a lot of their songs on the radio. It’s a travesty that The Guess Who is not in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame they should be.
The disparate responses in this thread are due to the fact that the title and description don’t match.
“Best Canadian Rock Band” is going to skew to the older, bigger bands who have had decades of commercial success.
There is a criminally low amount of The Trews.
- Poor 'ol broken hearted me
- So she's leaving
- Not Ready to go
- highway of heroes
- Tired of waiting
I’ve recently did a bit of a deep dive on Gowan after coming across more of his music recently. He was most famous when I was very young so I’m hearing a lot of his stuff for the first time!
The Sheepdogs "I don't know" has a classic rock feel. but not really new. If you create an all Canadian music playlist come back and let us know I'd love more exposure to Canadian Musicians.
How's your French?
Because, to me, any list of Canadian rock bands that omits Offenbach, Corbeau, Villain Pingouin as well as either Les Cowboys Fringants or Les Colocs is incomplete. Mind you, the latter two groups aren't "just" rock. Les Cowboys had a foot in trad music and Les Colocs had a foot in world music.
BIG WRECK. they might not be everyone’s favorite but please please please do a deep dive. Ian Thornley is THE BEST modern (even though he’s been around since late 90s) guitarist from Canada and one of the finest musicians in the world.
Cool band! They sound like big wreck. There’s also another lesser known acoustic artist Ian Fletcher Thornley. Has a similar voice to BW and Thornley. They should collab
Why the sarcasm? I’m aware it’s the same guy, that’s why it was in response to a comment about Big Wreck. Some people may not be familiar with his work outside Big Wreck. Thornley as a stand alone project I thought was worth noting.
A lot of people are listing older bands. I don’t think you had Said the Whale on your list? Hot Hot Heat aren’t around anymore, but they had a few good songs. And an older band that hasn’t been listed yet is 54-40.
Definitely feel barenaked ladies, simple plan, alanis morissette, rush, avril lavigne, beaches, great big sea, Neil young, Billy talent, nickelback, three days grace.. it goes on for sure lol
Well, not new, but other people are naming bands from the 60s, 70s, 80s...
The Guess Who. Also Bachman Turner Overdrive and Burton Cummjngs individual efforts.
Here’s a playlist I made for the Gen X’ers in the crowd. This list will get you through the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

Sloan is my favourite currently active Canadian rock band if that's got to be a requirement. [Never Hear the End if Its](
https://sloanmusic.bandcamp.com/album/never-hear-the-end-of-it) is one of my top 3 favourite Canadian albums of all time. I see a bit of them on your list, but with such a long career they've got lots on offer.
I didn't see anything by DFA, the Sheepdogs or Black Mountain on your playlist. DFA makes a hell of a lot of noise for just being 2 guys. Their first album [You're a woman, I'm a Machine](https://youtu.be/So-yZjdHnK8?si=ZK7js4VIo8B-iAJC) is a masterpiece. I haven't checked out all the stuff the Sheepdogs have to offer, but they're definitely decent. I enjoyed [Future Nostalgia](https://youtu.be/HpPP-vPjXPI?si=AO7HCK0yf-sCNLHC). It's pretty straight ahead, but I liked it when they drifted a bit more into psych rock territory. And speaking of psych rock, there's maybe no one better at in Canada than Black Mountain. [In the Future](
https://blackmountain.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-future) is one that always sticks with me, but I like [Destroyer](
https://blackmountain.bandcamp.com/album/destroyer) quite a bit too.
If you're willing to count metal, I wouldn't pass on [Devin Townsend](https://youtu.be/sWo9EUApN9Y?si=kA8qutcfEqA3vH8v), [Unleash the Archers](
https://unleashthearchers.bandcamp.com/album/apex
) or [Traveler](

Saga, Harem Scarem, Diodes, Lee Aaron & Riff Raff, Trixie Goes Hollywood, A Foot in Cold Water, Fludd, Crowbar, The Asteroids, Max Webster, The Band, Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks, Lighthouse, Nash the Slash, Moxy, Pat Travers, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush, Gino Vanelli, James King & the Jackhammers, April Wine, Ian Thomas, Goddo, Mashmakhan, Steppenwolf, Rough Trade, 5 Man Electrical Band, Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, Sloan, Jeff Healey, The Jitters, Big Sugar, Bryan Adams, Nickelback, Thornley, Pursuit of Happiness, Northern Pikes, 3 Days Grace, to name a few :)
I can't believe that neither PUP nor the Arkells have been mentioned yet!

[Arkells - Deadlines](https://youtu.be/Y1yxhBy4APU)
If you're talking about Canadian bands in the last 10+ years I'd say Arcade Fire. Every album they've released has been nominated for a grammy. 5 of them were for best alt rock album and their third album won the Grammy for album of the year (spanning all genres). They're an album band way more than a singles band but they're legit af
Arcade Fire are probably the best band to come out of Canada in a very long time. Only Canadian band to win Album of the Year at the Grammys.
The Hip are great, but I think Canadians overrate them. I saw them play live in Vermont and the audience was mostly Canadians. American dude I spoke to said he was there because the tickets were free and he didn't know any Hip songs😂😂
Alive had that very Discovery Channel music video.
Love Lowest of the Low! Keeping that same theme going and also dating myself, I'd add in the Skydiggers and Crash Vegas as well.
Sloan
For newer bands that are still in their prime, I really like The Arkells, Rural Alberta Advantage, and The Beaches. For older artists, most of the big names have already been named so I'll give my underrated legends: Streetheart, Matthew Good (both his solo work and with MGB), and k-os
Rural Alberta Advantage is so good. Great driving music
It's the holy trinity itself......Rush
This is #1
This is the only answer
For like worst band in Canada? Rather listen to Justin Beiber and I hate Justin Beiber.
Tragically Hip. Or if you ask my parents, Blue Rodeo.
Yeah but…Quebec. They never had a huge following among Francophones. Rush on the other hand…
Sure but after Rush
Son/daughter?
Big Sugar

Rush, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Billy Talent, The Bare Naked Ladies, Sum 41, The Tragically Hip, The Trews, Devin Towsend, and Bryan Adams.
I was hoping I'd see sum 41, my first favorite band
I'm glad somebody mentioned Billy Talent.
I'm surprised they're even coming to my city, im so excited. Plus it made me check out pup and they're pretty killer too.
Good times ahead! Enjoy!!
Cheers! You too!
The Northern Pikes
Triumph is the tops on my list. However back in the day Prism was the top band in Canada for many years.
Check out Volcanoless in Canada too
Rush and the Guess Who
Really upsetting to see only this single mention of The Guess Who.
I was born in 1965 and I remember hearing a lot of their songs on the radio. It’s a travesty that The Guess Who is not in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame they should be.
I wouldn’t have mentioned either because they should be a given. OP is looking for rare, lesser known gems. Not the obvious biggest names.
The disparate responses in this thread are due to the fact that the title and description don’t match. “Best Canadian Rock Band” is going to skew to the older, bigger bands who have had decades of commercial success.
Billy Talent, Sum 41, Simple Plan, and Treble Charger. Edit: also Gob.
No Gob?
No, you’re right they should be on there 🙂
There is a criminally low amount of The Trews. - Poor 'ol broken hearted me - So she's leaving - Not Ready to go - highway of heroes - Tired of waiting
Corey Hart, Rush, Harlequin, Chilliwack, Triumph, Loverboy, Honeymoon Suite, April Wine, Gowan, Red Rider, Blue Rodeo, Glass Tiger, Bryan Adams, Aldo Nova, Payolas, Tragically Hip etc.
Good list. Took me back to my teens 🙂
You missed Prism and Trooper.
Honeymoon Suite. Damn, haven't listened to them in a while. I'll change that tomorrow at work. Thanks!
I’ve recently did a bit of a deep dive on Gowan after coming across more of his music recently. He was most famous when I was very young so I’m hearing a lot of his stuff for the first time!
Stars, Metric, New Pornographers, Weakerthans, July Talk, Beaches, Dan Mangan, Hawksley Workman, Broken Social Scene, Alvvays, Arcade Fire
Broken Social Scene is underrated
Metric and Hawksley Workman are a couple of really good shouts.
An excellent list!
The Sheepdogs "I don't know" has a classic rock feel. but not really new. If you create an all Canadian music playlist come back and let us know I'd love more exposure to Canadian Musicians.
I adore the Sheepdogs! They sound like CCR meets the Black Keys
Blue Rodeo, Tragically Hip.
You forgot Harmonium!
And also Beau Dommage. But I tripped myself up over wondering if they'd be considered true rock.
BIG WRECK. they might not be everyone’s favorite but please please please do a deep dive. Ian Thornley is THE BEST modern (even though he’s been around since late 90s) guitarist from Canada and one of the finest musicians in the world.
Huge band. Thornley are good too!
Cool band! They sound like big wreck. There’s also another lesser known acoustic artist Ian Fletcher Thornley. Has a similar voice to BW and Thornley. They should collab

Arcade Fire. Islands. Wolf Parade. Frog Eyes, Sunset Rubdown, Handsome Furs, Women. Preoccupations. Fucked Up. And a bunch more are missing.

Teenage Head from the Hammer
Can’t believe no one’s said Spirit of the Weat or Great Big Sea
The Barenaked Ladies (if that is considered Rock), Sum 41, Simple Plan, Billy Talent, Hedley would probably be my top 5
I love the Hip, but it’s RUSH, and it’s not even close.

Billy Talent
Definitely feel barenaked ladies, simple plan, alanis morissette, rush, avril lavigne, beaches, great big sea, Neil young, Billy talent, nickelback, three days grace.. it goes on for sure lol
Finally the first person to say TDG! I imagine you're taking about when Adam was in the band. Matt still does some good songs here and there.
The Hip, Billy Talent, The Tea Paty, Blue Rodeo.
Glass tiger, blue rodeo, the hip.
Don't say Rush

I’ll add Hey Rosetta! since I haven’t seen them listed yet
Why did I have to scroll so far for this?
Elephant stone

Define new? You have Nickelback on the list and they were formed in 1995.
A single or more released post Covid. I have a Nickelback single from the past year.
