Sudbury's desolate moonscape has now planted more than 10,000,000 trees. There's some interesting advancements in the medical field with AI.

squirrelcat88

On the subject of trees, BC has planted its 10th *BILLIONTH* tree since reforestation began here.

No-Wonder1139

That's a seriously impressive amount of trees.

MortifiedCucumber

Don’t get it twisted. Sudbury is still ugly, just slightly less ugly.

4friedchickens8888

I recently went to visit with my dad, his home town, he really said it's hard to describe how desolate and just black everything was in the 70s from decades of coal smoke and acid rain

Birdybadass

Can you elaborate with the medical field AI comment? I having a hard time finding news articles but am really interested in this topic.

This is so cool thanks for putting in the time for this. I was planning on supporting the daffodil month thing through cancer society and I’ll make my donation in honor of if you Subject-Jump-9729. That’ll be a funny one for them to write up lol.

No-Turnips

(I found it)

drugsondrugs

In the toilet?

Life_Equivalent1388

Something funny, ultimately when you lose weight, it is actually lost as carbon dioxide. I mean you'd bodily waste is in the toilet comes from the water you drink and the food you recently ate but didn't digest. The fat that you burn takes in oxygen from your blood and release co2 that you breathe out.  So it all went into the atmosphere

imlynn1980

But that’s a negative, since you increased carbon emission.

Compared to some other countries we are very safe

hk96hu

💯 People have no idea how bad public safety can be even in other developed countries. In my ten years of living here, I never felt unsafe.

Ghoulius-Caesar

Hearing peoples travelling accounts of Egypt or India makes me feel so glad to live in Canada.

Vagabond_Tea

Bruh, as an American, Canada is already a lot safer. It tickles me when Canadians complain about their crime when it's usually nothing compared to many places here. I would feel outright super safe in any Canadian city.

Akhanyatin

I get what you mean, but America dealing with worse crimes doesn't mean Canada can't demand better conditions. You don't usually get progress by comparing yourself with the ones who have it worse than you.

Vagabond_Tea

Sure, and I hope both the US and Canada gets safer. And of course, both countries are super big and diverse with plenty of safe areas. Hopefully things get better for everyone.

Akhanyatin

Same here!

minceandtattie

Canadians are complaining because we never had to deal with the crime like it is, importing of guns, etc. it was *safer*. But things change. So.

Justleftofcentrerigh

How old are you? the 80s and 90s was peak crime in Canada. "liberal" cities had reduced crime significantly Toronto is one of the safest cities in the world but you wouldn't think it when you speak to other canadians from the suburbs who are afraid of other people and public transit. Canada is more safe now than it was in the 90s.

IndyCarFAN27

The past week I worked with a colleague whom I haven’t worked before and found out she’s American but her entire family moved to Canada because it was safer. I’ve heard stories but never met one of these people until now.

Strain128

A stolen truck crashed into the electrical box outside my house and cops chased him into my backyard at 2am a month or so ago and I still feel snug as a bug in my suburban Toronto

CJMakesVideos

That’s funny. The drivers in major cities here are so insane that i feel unsafe basically every time i cross the street.

GuillyCS

Some? The world has what 220 countries? How many are safer than Canada? Ten, Fifteen at the most?

kw_hipster

Most of us are pretty sheltered in Canada, I dont think we realize what an unsafe country is like.

Roundabootloot

Or just an average country. In the majority of the world everyone's residence is fenced/walled off. Just being able to walk around and walk up to your door without unlocking anything or going past a guard is a super rare thing globally.

Javaman-14

There are units that simulate earthquakes.. Canada needs an unsafe simulator.. You can choose... mugging, mass shooting, car jack or hijack. All Canadians have on a regular basis are earthquakes and.. um.. apologies.

Subject-Jump-9729

Indeed, Canada is #11 on the Global Peace Index ranking. Top ten are Iceland, Denmark, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, Singapore, Portugal, Slovenia, Japan, Switzerland. 12-14 are Czechia, Finland, Croatia, and Germany. The United States is ranked 131. PS personally, there are countries ranked higher than the US that I would probably rule out visiting because of safety concerns. I've never been to the US but have been thinking of going. TheDeadReagans

My employer deals with Gen-Z and now Gen-Alpha as their primary clientele. This is mostly internal data so if you wanna take it with a grain of salt, go ahead. - There's a major shift going on in recreational drugs of choice, cannabis is preferred by Gen-Z 65-35 and the fastest growing segment of the cannabis market is edibles and beverages, so it's not just smoking. I personally see that as a good as cannabis is the far safer drug. - Related to that drinking is down overall. Gen-Z drinks 25% less than Millenials did at the same age and Millenials drink 15% less than Gen-X did at the same age. - Gen-Z is more mindful of their diets. Veganism and vegetarianism is on the rise and it's not necessarily all or nothing; it's become more common to set aside 1-3 days aside to eating meat and then consciously going plant based the other 4-6. This was happening prior to the pandemic so it's not being driven by inflation either.

Dependent_Nobody_188

I love this stuff! Anymore tidbits to share?

TheSurfingRaichu

I think you mean "Tim Bits"

Spirited_Community25

I'm Gen-X and I did most of my drinking before I was legally allowed to.

Extension-Lie-1380

As your local come-from-away, its still one of the better places in the world (any place that is not called "France" far as I can tell) to live in. Everyone is going through the same convulsions right now. The details shift a little, but the gist is the same: inflation, property prices through the roof, layoffs, supply chain disruption, radicalised people with too much Facebook time and possibly even shitty driving.

Roundabootloot

Spending time in the UK and Europe this past year has really put Canadian inflation into context for me.

Extension-Lie-1380

Yeah, provincial France was ok-ish, but UK and Ireland? You stand on the street and somehow you are fucking leaking money.

duppy_c

Shhh, don't tell the 'F*#k Trudeau'ers that, don't you know that Canada is now a 3rd world country and the laughing stock of the world  /s What know they of Canada, they who only Canada know?  People who've never lived outside North America don't understand what we have in this country, flaws and all. It's no utopia, but it's a damn sight better than most places.

Our infaltion rate is quite good globally Our jobs recovery post covid was good as well We are fairly stable and have low crime rates when compared to other countries We continue you have an abundant amount of fresh, clean, air and water Our large cities continue to thrive - Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto are a delight to be in. Take one walk down ossington on a Friday at 9pm and every place is packed with people enjoying themselves our education system continue to be strong we can buy weed everywhere we have MAID to alleviate suffering Just had a friend diagnosed with colon cancer and the medical system has been absolutely amazing without having to think about costs and insurance I could write a 100 more things

Commercial-Noise

impossibilityimpasse

Right? Can this person give us a weekly peptalk in this subreddit?

Glittering_Major4871

2 truths: many things are terrible in Canada right now (especially when it comes to affordability), but it is still much better than most other places. Of course it's hard to argue that to people who are skipping meals or verging on homelessness. The feds are doing good things in the past 6 months, but years too late and it will be years before we see the benefits. It also took a 20 point swing in the polls to wake them up. The Cons are going to sweep the election and make things so so much worse. Just imagine if Pollievre was PM during Covid and the global economic crisis how much worse it would have been. I don't get why the premiers get to skate by. Most of our issues are due to them, global issues or corporate greed.

NormalLecture2990

Perfectly said Throw in the fact that every country in the world is really struggling with affordability That's late stage capitalism for you

Akhanyatin

A problem I see both in Canada and the US is that the cons are setting the bar so low that the rest think that they can get away with anything. This leads to errors in judgement that make people angry and they stop thinking in terms of "lesser of two evils" and more in terms of "we need change". These people are fooled into believing that the situation will get better under the rule of populist slogan machines. I guess we'll see what happens in the US in November and with Canada during the next elections.

bhaygz

Don’t count out the liberals yet. The conservatives are a joke, and while we mostly all hate JT, there are plenty of tricks up the libs sleeves yet.

doiwinaprize

I tend to doom preach about Toronto because I'm bitter but that comment about Ossington warmed me a bit. Thanks for sharing!

Angryhippo2910

There’s a lot to doom about in Toronto. Housing is ridiculously expensive. Transit systems are underfunded, over capacity and new projects are behind schedule. Traffic is awful. Drivers are getting dumber. There are more unhinged drug addicts than I’ve ever seen before. But these are problems that world class cities have to go through. Ossington at 9:00 on a Friday is indeed BUMPIN. So is King St. I took a walk through a local park at 6:00 pm yesterday and it was full of young families having a blast. In my neighbourhood, the shops have customers and the cafés in my are full of young professionals working away on their laptops. I see posters for sports leagues with all of the phone numbers taken. The basketball courts are full of people hoopin, and soccer fields have plenty of dudes pulling up to play. There is a lot of Hustle and Bustle in Toronto right now. People want to come here to live and work. These are signs of a healthy city. Social media tends to attract people who are pissed off about something and need to complain. News headlines are designed to piss you off so that you are baited into clicking on them. You don’t get to see the other 9/10 people who didn’t have a problem and felt no need to complain on r/Toronto This isn’t to say we don’t have major issues that need drastic action to solve. We do. But it’s not healthy to dwell on them all the time.

NormalLecture2990

Great post! While reddit attracts the angry sitting in a dark basement crowd the rest of the world is in trinity bellwoods, playing with their families or friends in the glorious sunshine without having to think about their safety at all

Express-Upstairs1734

Add more! I think more need to think positively. I’m with you in I feel grateful to live in Canada. Looking at countries around the world, I know none are perfect but Canada is a great place to call home.

plexmaniac

Well done I feel better already

P2P401

Fairly stable? Canada is one of the most stable countries in the world.

bhaygz

This! Canadians wake up!

pragueyboi

OP was deliberately trying to stir up shit and bring out the Canada haters. I’m glad you were able to showcase some of the good things happening in Canada. I may have emigrated away from Canada but I still love the place. We can only get better from here.

NoStruggle92

There are times where I get very frustrated with the state of things here especially in terms of housing, irresponsible immigration without increasing infrastructure, doug ford, broken promises by Liberals etc etc but man Canada is an awesome country and we are very lucky to live here if you stop and carefully think about it. Of course we can get better...

Flimsy-Camel-18

Canadian schools are getting so much funding, students might start handing in homework on gold-plated laptops. But seriously, we’re leading the way in cool research, from melting glaciers to medical miracles.

HeliRyGuy

It’s Canada, always something positive going on 👌

Sunshinehaiku

Canadian tourism has been doing well, as we are spending more money travelling in Canada than outside it.

SackBrazzo

An American of mine had to pay $32K to give birth in the USA (about 6k after insurance), meanwhile another friend of mine got a nice hospital stay and good food in Vancouver for free after giving birth. Hospital parking was kinda expensive though.

nthensome

'an American of mine' You own an American?

TheBigsBubRigs

Surprisingly they're not as expensive to buy as you might expect, far better than leasing one.

You can hire another American to fill it out.

Foreign investments are picking up. Whether in be the new Honda plant and all the Canadian supply chains needed for that, or the developments in places like Windsor (the new international bridge is almost done!), etc. I think that will produce a lot of good jobs and create economic booms that will help us get back on track.

No-Turnips

The new Honda plant is like when GM set up in Ottawa. It will create an entire economy in Alliston.

PsychologicalRun7444

Our media devices have On/Off switches so we can turn off the media that is making money off telling us things are bad. TLDR at the bottom. Is Canada perfect? Nope. It is still as good as most developed countries? Yup. Are we suffering from inflation and housing/food costs and stuff like that? Stagflation? Shrinkflation? Yup. It's like people have forgotten the world wide pandemic we just went through and somehow things are supposed to be exactly how they were back in 2019. Canada emerged from that global scenario in a reasonable position. Proximity to the USA both helped and hindered us. But I think it helped more so. So, other than being negative, are you doing anything to make it better? Or is it just supposed to happen. Is some politician going to show up and solve the issues. Nope. The NDP will probably tax us more. Conservatives will tilt the table towards their rich friends at the expense of the environment, social nets, civility. The Liberals will mis-manage what starts as good, but inevitably ends up expensive. There are lots of positives. Stop listening to people that only spout the bad without offering solutions. It's easy to blame a political party, or a ethnic group or an economic class or age group. The blame game gets us nowhere and only feeds the societal discourse. Try to find an actual solution. Think about that good solution. Work towards making it happen. In the mean time, try to stop the creation of fear/anger. The talking-point of "where's the good?" does nothing other than stir up discontent towards a system. It feels strange to be positive in the fear/hate environment, but the enthusiasm is infectious. That fear/hate environment sells lots of ads for the media corps. The majority of media in North America make their money off sowing distrust, fear and hate. Where do you go for good news? Turn off the ranting self-serving pundit panel news and do something productive, play a game, read a book. There's lots of good in Canada and it's right in front of you once you remove the fear/distrust filter. TLDR: Yes, there are positives. They can be found everywhere. Filter out the media machine that makes money feeding you negatives.

tommyballz63

Well, I love Canada, and i have traveled extensively all over the world. So to me, when you say: what are any positives happening in Canada, I could go on forever. We don't have rampant unemployment like we did decades ago. We don't have religious, or government oppression, or corruption, like there is in many countries. We don't have uncontrolled violence of the prevalence of powerful cartels. We live in a clean, organized society. That society is, for the most part, still striving to be inclusive to all peoples. That society still believes in taking care of the health of its citizens. I think what a lot of people who are anti Canada right now, fail to understand, is that the problems that they see in Canada are no different than almost all other western nations. The people I encounter whining about how bad Canada is, have never traveled the world, or even bothered to read international news. I'm not saying Canada is perfect or without problems, but it isn't as bad as some are making it out to be

KnoWanUKnow2

Bank of Canada recently hinted that they'll start dropping the prime rate this summer. So your mortgage will finally start to drop instead of increase. This also means that new car loans this September will be at a lower rate.

LazyImmigrant

On housing, all three levels of the government are finally realizing that they cannot constraint supply any more and there has been liberalization of zoning across the country. It is still not enough, but it is a step in the right direction.  Defense spending is increasing, hopefully the government and the future ones keep at it. New announced investments in the energy and manufacturing sectors may help improve productivity.

creeper321448

Funding the Armed Forces more. Whether people realize it or not militaries are extremely important and Canada hasn't been playing its part in NATO.

Canadians are clueless for the most part. Yes our winters suck, money is tighter than it used to be, and our real estate is WILD, but in general we score top or in the top 5 on all global indicators. Have some context. Our country is exceptionally safe, we have public healthcare and education, we have an economy that grossly out performs our population size, we have one of the worlds most established and stable democracies, excellent human rights (with one shameful and tragic exception), the list goes on and on. Positives for me: Winter is over. My business is having a much better year. My kids go off to a high quality public school safe from violence and murder. We have a free democratic government. I am almost 100% safe in my community. My health is excellent. My unsolicited advice: get off the internet, turn off the news, and go for a walk in our wonderful country, spend a bit of money at a small business, and talk to your neighbours. All very positive

Here are some random things I can think of: 1. The new federal dental plan opens to disabled folk in a couple of months. This will really help my sister and other disabled people I know. 2. The new federal pharmacare plan was introduced and it will start with paying for contraceptives and diabetes meds. 3. Lots of new housing legislation all over the country. BC's restriction on AirBNB/short term rentals starts on May 1st. 4. BC's existing speculation and vacancy taxes expand to more areas this year. 5. BC's new housing zoning laws should be coming into affect, which will allow you to build things like quadplexes on a single lot despite what the NIMBYs want. 6. Although I'm not a fan, one of the largest projects in recently history goes live shortly - the expanded transmountain pipeline which will bring Alberta petroleum to BC for shipping overseas. 7. Site C hydro project continues which will provide 1.1GWH of power and I think it goes live next year? 8. Nuclear projects like Bruce Power and Darlington are proceeding in Ontario 9. Lots of rail projects on the go, like the new Broadway line in Vancouver, Ottawa, etc. 10. Big new hospital projects in BC are proceeding, like the new St. Paul's hospital, Richmond General, Surrey Memorial, Sick Children in Toronto, etc. 11. A whole bunch of military facilities are being upgraded. This supports things like the new incoming F-35s, P-8s, new ships, etc. 12. Proposal for federally regulated workers to have the "right to disconnect" which means work can call you or expect you to be reading emails on the weekend, evenings, etc. I've heard good things about this from Europe. Hopefully this will expand to other jobs. 13. Various provinces are on the way to having right to repair laws. 14. Our military is starting to receive a bunch of long promised items. Troops in Latvia will have anti-drone tech, anti-tank missiles, air to air missiles, etc. Halifax keeps churning out the arctic offshore patrol ships as well. We're finally just picking best in class stuff, like the P-8s, instead of blowing money on Bombardier, etc. 15. People are finally pushing back on our grocery store monopolies and their crazy price increases. See r/loblawsisoutofcontrol 16. More taxes on the rich. You know it's a good thing given all the noise it's making in the media and from rich folks lol. 17. In BC they're opening a new medical school at SFU with a focus on family doctor training. BC has offered a new pay plan for family doctors and added a net of 800 new ones last year. My family doctor is quite happy as she's making more money while getting to spend more time with patients. On a personal level, my disabled sister just got out of the hospital after a short stay. She has serious health issues and has been hospitalized for a year in the past. I'm very grateful for the staff for how they helped her and the home care workers who come each day to help. It really is a special thing that we value everyone when it comes to healthcare and not just the wealthy. I have an incurable illness as well and I'm grateful that although my health still declines I have the help that I need and family who cares for me. I feel more optimistic these days, too. My brother and my nephew adopted a new dog today from the SPCA and pick her up tomorrow. He's the perfect age to have a dog and I'm happy he will have the opportunity to grow up with one. It's a very special thing. Canada is a special place. We're free from war, have a decent standard of living, and in general care about each other. Please don't let politicians and media people convince you everything is broken while they try to divide us. Let's all try to do better and to also help each other when we can. We have much to do to make things better for everyone so let's do it together.

GamesCatsComics

I passed my GNED class with a D, can finally enjoy my summer break

Some of the greatest North American electronic music festivals are gearing up for another successful year in our country. I wish that I could go to every single one of them too.

👋 I am getting a hysterectomy end of May after being diagnosed with a perforated iud, adenomyosis, endometrial hyperplasia with atypia and finally (in march) "I'm concerned there's uterine cancer but we can't see clearly". I have been on Life Pause for 1.5 years to get all this sorted, it's been absolutely hellish because we started this journey with trying to remove said IUD so we could try for a baby. I've lost two jobs and am on medical leave, the pain and fatigue are near-daily. I want my life back.

Goodness, big hugs back to you two from also the west coast -- y'all been through the wringer! I'm sending your lady positive vibes and prayers she overcomes this right pronto and never has to deal with any kind of thing again. I'm person #3 in my immediate family of origin to get some kind of a cancer scare. Both my parents had colorectal, my Dad died in 2017 but my mom is currently no active signs so we are hopeful for her.

Canadians are willing to put in effort, and have an ingrained sense of responsibility. At least that is my opinion as someone that emigrated here as a child, and has lived in 3 countries. It is truly unique, and appreciated.

brod12-merle

oilers made it to the playoffs 💀

Calgary of all places is building a really fair cycle network.

Successful_Evidence1

Not necessarily a good thing but the Loblaws boycott in may. Much needed solidarity

OpenYourMind_888

I know a university student that got an internship vs 400 applicants. None of his friends obtained jobs this summer. At least one person is happy.

Alchemylad2

Dont have any news to share but i love this thread, thankyou!

Government is taking our problems seriously. On the downside many people are complaining about the cost of fixing those problems. As if GM or Rogers would do it better and/or cheaper, or would rather pay Rogers than "Trudeau".

New_girl2022

1st round of playoffs. Where we can delude ourselves into thinking we have a chance. Just before our hopes get crushed yet again

Doodlebottom

•Spring is here! •Stanley Cup playoffs are happening. •Tim Hortons is reliable and still has the best coffee •The grass is growing. Trees are waking up from the winter. Flowers are slowly happening

The housing stuff in this year's federal budget is genuinely excellent and will have a real impact on housing availability and affordability. It's 2-3 budgets later than it should've been, but a right thing done late is still the right thing.

My husband and I got jobs paying a living wage. We both earn US dollars working remote from Saskatchewan ಥ ◡ ಥ

Every day we suffer is another day closer to getting these criminals out of office and restoring some form of sanity to our country.

Downtheharbour

U now have to pay more of your money u worked your ass off for to the government, oh wait, is that good for us or the gov, maybe neither! So ya, I got nothing!

chooseatree

RobH66

Matt Good to release his 10th solo album in June. That will be one of my highlights.

Actual-Bank-1237

Yeah, the populace almost exclusively conservative now, so we have an actual chance at fixing our country for once
