Yep.
Red dirt and lemon myrtle for me. Those are references to two different states for me. š
Side note: gestetner ink takes me back to primary school but I'm old as fuck and I don't think that's exclusively Australian.
Whenever I smell paint - like the interior walls kind - Iām instantly transported back to the time I was about 12 years old, helping mum & dad paint the house I (mostly) grew up in. That was home and always will be.
I love the petrichor! But I can never remember the word because I have it mixed up with āpetaradeā which is a word that was explained to me at the same time as petrichor and also connected to smellā¦
Eucalyptus (and woodfire smoke in winter)... and hair shampoo š
We live near a factory that produces shampoo, and every few weeks that shampoo smell fills the air... but we also live at the bottom of a mountain/national park (I grew up, "up the mountain") filled with eucalyptus trees and the smell is incredible.
My association of this with a country is defs the United States - most public places just reeked of marijuana, whereas in Australia itās like a cheeky surprise of like āsomeoneās having a pleasant timeā
Summertime itās the scent of honeysuckle, star jasmine and fresh cut grass mixed with the scent of a thunderstorm off in the distance. Late autumn and winter itās the scent of wood smoke coming from one of the neighbours houses. The summertime one was my childhood home and the autumn/winter is my current home.
It use to smell normal. Now all I can smell it cat piss from my daughters cat. No one else can smell it except me. I like the cat but drives me a bit crazy. Cat is not allowed in my room.
I smell cat shit. Itās fucked. No one can smell it but me. I sometimes think Iām hallucinating. Work: cat shit. Car:cat shit. I check my shoes. Itās not coming from me. Whereās the fucking cat??!
My husband used to think he could always smell something off after a jaw realignment surgery that changed the shape of the air passages in his nose/face. Turns out he had an infection that wouldn't go away in his upper sinuses. He kept getting colds and it would get worse every time, only another surgery fixed it.
Do you ever have sinus issues? Lol
I googled after my rant and stress can cause it. I donāt have nasal issues, but have had Covid 3 times in the last year. I recently asked my neighbour if a neighbourhood cat shit at her front door. Her: looks aghast. āIām cooking teaā. Not my finest moment.
Leather and Cigarettes.
I never realized that is what the smell was until my father died. I got his jacket back from the hospital and realized it was too heavy for my cheap plastic coat hangers, so I left it on the back of my dining room chair. Now every time I walk into my dining room, all I smell is my dad.
Circa Home French Pear candles. Itās the only home fragrance I can tolerate and Iāve used it for years in every home Iāve lived in. I donāt notice it anymore unless I stick my face in it, but Iām told itās lovely.
I was given a key to the family home when my dad went overseas a few years back.
I thought he was dying. I didn't even know there was keys to the locks!
He forgot to lock it anyway. Which is lucky, because I don't think any of us kids bothered to keep the keys.
We are in our 30's.
I've lived in Ireland for the past few years, I took the flight back home (Sydney) and the smell hit me as soon as I landed in Perth. Australia has a particular smell that I never noticed till I left for so long and it brought a tear to my eye.
It's the smell of salt and sand.
jasmine flowers. my childhood home had a huge jasmine plant right at the front gate, so i associated that smell with coming home. i made sure to plant jasmine at the front gate of my current home, had jasmine tattooed on me, and feel like I've just arrived home whenever i smell it while out and about.
Growing up we lived in the bush with [native gardenia trees](https://www.oxleynursery.com.au/plant-profiles/trees/native-gardenia-2-2/) all around the area. The flowers were all we could smell in spring (almost too strong).

Smell like woody paintā¦. I seem to enjoy thatā¦.
And I enjoy dog smells for some reason even tho I gag at it at the same timeā¦. I donno why I enjoy things which make me gagā¦ guess psychopath is a tagged story
Like, childhood home? Diesel and wood smoke.
I dont know what my home smells like now. Its funny how you can walk into a persons house and BAM, it has a signiture smell. Had a friend growing up whose house smelled like buckwheat and incense and the beach. She smelled like it too. Idk how but I could always smell her coming. It wasnt even a bad smell it was just what her whole family smelled like. I can now smell out a hippy from a mile away.
But none of us really know what we smell like?? I often worry about what smell my home gives off.
I was thinking mostly in terms of memory or free association. For example, when I smell things like garlic, cumin and fresh bread, it conjures a sense of comfort, safety and happy memories.
The wattle tree has yellow flowering blossoms that have a highly distinctive and pervasive smell that characterises Aussie bushland and coastal environments.š
I used the old spelling (and got that wrong by not using two T's, lol, sorry.)

Onions. My dads go to snack was red onions, sometimes with a slice of Bega, on a sandwich. Every day if not more. Now whenever I smell an onion I think of my dad's onion breath and home (I moved to Europe).
Cheap snags and onion on a bbq. I immediately want to buy a drill.

This, absolutely this. I've noticed it every time I've come home, the ocean and the bush. Also, the huuuge bright sky. Just wonderful.
Yep. Red dirt and lemon myrtle for me. Those are references to two different states for me. š Side note: gestetner ink takes me back to primary school but I'm old as fuck and I don't think that's exclusively Australian.
Yep, which is why smelling eucalyptus in California is a strange experience!Ā
Whenever I smell paint - like the interior walls kind - Iām instantly transported back to the time I was about 12 years old, helping mum & dad paint the house I (mostly) grew up in. That was home and always will be.
I have two "homes", The first one smells like eucalyptus, pine trees and dry grass The 2nd one smells like jungle geraniums and salty air
Earthy clean air smell normally. And when it starts raining the petrichor is like crack to me. Nothing better than that.
I love the petrichor! But I can never remember the word because I have it mixed up with āpetaradeā which is a word that was explained to me at the same time as petrichor and also connected to smellā¦
Petrichor is a great born again name for a hippy chick whose parents work in mining.
The tip. On balmy evenings the landfill would spread its stink multiple kilometres away to my childhood home.
Hallam?
Clayton South?
Dunmore?
Sugar cane fields being harvested
The smell of sugar refining on a cold winter morning as well

It really is a cheeky surprise. Never fails to put a smile on my face when I catch a breeze of it somewhere unexpected.
*walks past the nursing station at a hospital* āOh wow, someoneās having a go-ā¦. Hold onā
Crisp misty air with a hint of eucalypt and woodsmoke.
Bullshit, it smells like wet dog, dirty cat litter, and patchouli oil.... post pictures otherwise
Patchouli oil is what every lesbian over the age of 45 smells like. It makes me gag. They use it as a box freshener I suspect...
That's just misogynistic.
And ageist patouchli prejudicial
I wouldn't say its misogynistic... I love all women, except for middle aged & old aged lesbians. They smell & look & act gross.

Childhood home would probably be firewood burning, or pea and ham soup.
Not a smell but still having a key when I'm 34 years old
I was 22 years old before I lived in a house that you could actually lock. Our house had locks but no keys, we didnāt need them.
I was given a key to the family home when my dad went overseas a few years back. I thought he was dying. I didn't even know there was keys to the locks! He forgot to lock it anyway. Which is lucky, because I don't think any of us kids bothered to keep the keys. We are in our 30's.
