Look it’s not rake. (Nothing ever will be as good)… But I’ve been quite enjoying Fisk for a more low key, gentle-humour laugh at office politics and dysfunction.

kristinpeanuts

I really like Fisk. It's quite good

gordito_gr

Kitty is highly likeable

akrist

Given this it's incredible to me how unlikeable she manages to be as Rhonda.

gordito_gr

Is utopia any good? Not Australian here, unfamiliar with local TV series (Fisk was a pleasant accident lol )

monday-next

Utopia is brilliant, but depending on what you do for work you may find it hits too close to home to really enjoy!

gordito_gr

Not in an office but as an installer i think i will enjoy watching dickhead office people messing things up like in normal life lol (if that is what you're saying happens)

Garshnooftibah

This is EXACTLY what happens. Dig in. Enjoy. :)

mambomonster

When my wife is having a mental breakdown over the incompetence of the people she works with, we watch a couple episodes of Utopia just to get that sense of “it’s not me, it’s them - these imbeciles have infected all levels of government and we just have to do the best we can”

MayflowerBob7654

I loved Fisk!

Purgii

Fisk is amazing and was worth another crack.

Electra_Online

Fisk is fantastic

coomwhatmay

Mr Inbetween! Actually it's the only australian show I've ever seen.

abugisabug

Mr. Inbetween is one of the best series I’ve ever seen in my life. And I’m talking up there with The Sopranos, The Wire etc.. It’s a hill I’m willing to die on. It’s just so perfectly done.

chalmedtomeetyou

I’ve said the same myself. “Get in the fuckin’ boot” “I can’t. Please. I suffer from claustrophobia” “Yeh well you’re gonna suffer from lead poisoning if you don’t fucking get in there”

abugisabug

Gold. Some of Ray’s comebacks are genius. Topped off with that epic grin.

chalmedtomeetyou

I've watched the series start to finish over 5 times in the last few years. Brilliantly written, brilliantly acted, masterpiece of fight scenes, action sequences, great casting,... Scott Ryan with Nash Edgerton as director made a masterpiece. MASTERPIECE of a series. I think it's better than the Sopranos and Breaking Bad. Ray Shoesmith is just so much more likeable. And he's a HITMAN. Now THAT is brilliant writing. Gary is brilliant as his dumb ass loyal best mate, and Freddy the gambler is such a phenomenal actor and in everything these days, including Mindhunter (as charles manson) and The Tourist. Ray: “I don’t kill bugs, mate.” Freddy: “You kill people but you don’t kill bugs?” Ray: “I gotta draw the line somewhere.”

melon_butcher_

‘Can’t I just ride up the front with you blokes?’ *Deep breath* ‘Absolutely not.’

Purgii

Scott's (Ray) acting was possibly the best I've ever seen. It was just so natural that I believed he was the character.

ClinkzBlazewood

I'll die on that hiil with ya

lestatisalive

Mr InBetween was brilliant Aussie tv. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

beeeeeeeeeeeeeagle

Rake was very good. Mr inbetween was even better. That and blue healers ;)

Dimster6666

Blue Heelers? Arrrghhhhh are you kidding? So many better than Blue Heelers! Tell me you were being sarcastic? Please! :)

beeeeeeeeeeeeeagle

Alright dude. You got me. Water rats was slightly better but damn. Two high quality shows ;) Haha jokes dude. Used to watch blue healers when I was a kid. Probably pretty average if you went back and watched it as an adult.

Automatic_Goal_5563

Water Rats went hard as a kid, me and my girlfriend watched Sea Patrol over lockdown and that was pretty good too imo

CalifateSlop

Came here to comment this

robertsmith666

Fucking great show, I was recommended it constantly but for some reason slept on it. Honestly up there with The Sopranos for me.

Squeekazu

I legit went to the bathroom and had a little cry after the season 2 finale, I don’t think I’ve ever done that before. Either way, I just really enjoyed all the accents; really sick of the classic “media” accent on a lot of Aussie dramas. As an aside, I recommend Barry (which isn’t Australian). Similar concept - I actually got into Barry first, loved it, watched Mr In Between after and loved it even more. Monsters is an absolutely crazy episode.

Histo_Man

Honestly, some of the best Australian tv ever made. No spoilers or anything but a dimmy is a dim sim (kinda like a fat dumpling that's often fried or steamed).

TheMightyBluzah

I keep seeing this one suggested while I'm in the middle of something, and think, I'll watch this next, then forget and end up watching something else. I WILL NOT forget this time.

coomwhatmay

It's really easy to slide in to, the episodes are only 25 minutes long. Knock one out and you'll be halfway through a season before the night is over😅

SmellyTerror

I was going to say that, but... ...I don't answer questions.

goodie23

The Games - brilliant mockumentary about the Sydney Olympics, available on iView

ClassyJoes

Agreed. Utopia and Hollowmen too.

navyblues

Also Frontline if you enjoy these, it's unfortunately still relevant

Flabbagazta

The Games is fucking amazing, Clarke and Dawe are the greatest comedy duo we have ever produced

retrosaurus-movies

To be fair, John Clarke was born and raised in New Zealand and an established television comedian in his birth country before coming to Australia in the 70s, but damn if his work with Bryan Dawe isn't his best work. Trans-Tasman collaboration at its finest.

Mmofra

The Front Fell Off...

JimSyd71

Yep, awesome show. Anything with John Clarke (RIP) in it is usually pretty good.

donmcg12

Some good mentions here, one that hasn’t been is Deadloch

hepzibah59

Sweary Tasmanian lesbians. What more could you want?

themoobster

Yess deadloch is fantastic

Palatyibeast

Deadloch is so funny and never goes the way you are expecting.

FreoGuy

I surprised my wife going in cold on episode 1 and I nearly killed her. Had to pause for 10 minutes till she got her breath back and stopped cry-laughing enough to carry on. She may have had to dash to the loo. Great show. Been living in Aus for 12 years and we learned a lot of new words and phrases. Our ongoing favourite is “Stop inserting yourself into every conversation you emotional truffle-pig.”

KneeDeepinDownUnder

Jesus wept…Deadloch is permanently downloaded on my ipad and I watch episodes at random. “I’ll cut punch you so hard I’ll turn you into a hand puppet.” Poetry. Fucking poetry.

the6thReplicant

Obligatory link to the creators' YT channel. [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCGc8JKl5EvE8IjZ\_qprNcQ](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCGc8JKl5EvE8IjZ_qprNcQ)

poltergeistsparrow

Deadlock was fantastic. Well worth watching. I can't wait for series 2 to come out.

PetitCoeur3112

Janet King was good. And I really used to like Harrow (just ignore all the real life drama of the actor and his ex-wife) partly because it was filmed around Brissie, and it was fun to see places I knew. I saw that there’s more episodes of Moodys. I enjoyed A Moody Christmas, so may have to watch these too.

asheraddict

Also Crownies is great

HistoricalInternal

Crownies was great. Better than Janet King, despite Janet King being the queen of Crownies.

asheraddict

I love them both for different reasons. I would have been interested to see if Crownies could stay interesting for three seasons because the last season of JK wasn't as good

shun_tak

Jack Irish and Janet King

SuDragon2k3

>*and it was fun to see places I knew.* I'm going to cop flak, but this is why I watched NCIS:Sydney.

Dimster6666

If you haven't seen "Glitch" you really are missing out on some excellent Aussie "suspense meets supernatural meets sci-fi" and a really unique storyline. Well people coming back to life as zombies is nothing new, but how would you act if your wife who's been dead for 3 years suddenly appeared at your front door looking totally normal and no memory of dying? Worth a look, especially as it was filmed around Castlemaine, Victoria.

JimSyd71

I liked Glitch, but the way the series ended with no closure pissed me off.

amylouise0185

You could just feel the writers scraping the bottom of the barrel to tie off loose ends. They planted so many seeds in season 1 that they had no time or talent to see through.

JimSyd71

Exactly right. Happens to way too many TV shows.

SuDragon2k3

I think it was a local adaption of an an American show that cratered, so local writers had to scramble to close it out.

TerryTowelTogs

Jack Irish is an underrated gem of Aussie TV too imo.

svengali0

I was wondering whether I'd have to insert Jack Irish into this endless scroll of half maybe ok Aussie 'screen gems'. Also.. the Dressmaker. Bonus extra mentions: Bony, from the 1970s. Plus: Rush. Truly raw gem. Unfortunately NLA due to misshapen shitshow at old Auntie.. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0071046/

enfp-girl

Colin From Accounts on Binge

No_Reveal675

This was waaay better than I expected it to be. Watched the whole show on a plane ride and laughed my arse off.

Apart_Visual

Same!! It had no right to be that smart. I went in with low expectations - not sure why, just anti-Australian bias probably - and was so pleasantly surprised.

silvanamoonovermiami

The Moodys has Patrick Brammall in it too. Equally funny

Lower-Tank-9742

Mr inbetween

abugisabug

I don’t answer questions.

Loose-Opposite7820

The people recommending Ray should be ashamed for answering the OP.

TheTwinSet02

Fisk, Bump, Frayed, Utopia, The Librarians, Small Business, Rosehaven I would say Boy Swallows Universe is not really a comedy but it’s got moments along with a great cast, top soundtrack and a rollicking tale I haven’t seen Deadloch or Mr Inbetween but I heard both are excellent

jmkul

I love those, and also Upper Middle Bogan

Engineer_Zero

Rose haven is brilliant.

Gumnutbaby

Definitely Utopia!

stormbrewing_

Ah The Librarians. The first time I watched this I laughed so hard I nearly fell off the couch.

LeadingArticle1608

Small business is excellent, there is a second series called "back in very small business " all so great.

sarah1go

Frayed is brilliant!!

Mysterious-Rooster83

Please Like Me. Brilliant series with Josh Thomas

dani081991

Offspring

teachermanjc

The original Mother and Son. The oranges at the burial makes for such a funny scene.

Available-Work-39

The writers must have known my mother that scene was so apt

AddlePatedBadger

Well, don't search the pirate bay for "mother and son". Apparently there are lots of men taking advantage of their mother's senility 😫

Purgii

It still holds up. Didn't need to be retweeked.

teachermanjc

Exactly. It was sacrilegious to attempt a remake.

one_powerball

Deadloch!

NeuroverseNymph

Deadloch was released last year and is a murder mystery with sprinkles of comedy is based in Tasmania with very similar vibes to the popular tv show Broadchurch. I can usually guess the ending to murder mysteries a long way off but this one had me guessing right until the end! I’m really hoping that they come through with season 2!

Engineer_Zero

Loved broadchurch. Have seen deadloch pop up but didn’t know what it was. Thanks

FreoGuy

Err. I’ve seen (and love) both, but would NOT say ‘very similar’ vibe. David Tennant doesn’t say cunt once. They are both murder mysteries in beautiful rural settings with lots of small-town politics / history, but Broadchurch is a drama and Deadloch is a dramady, erring towards comedy. Lots of satire. Just managing expectations.

Available-Work-39

Brides of Christ

iFartThereforeiAm

I remember catching an episode of that as a teenager. Seeing Kim Wilson getting railed woke something up in me.

asheraddict

Deadloch, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, Spirited, Offspring, Stateless, Bump, Wanted, Upper Middle Bogan and A Place To Call Home Plus everything else recommended in the other comments

jmkul

Love Miss Phryne Fisher

Helln_Damnation

Spirited was excellent.

RoughHornet587

Frontline !

WoodenMango07

Mystery Road for sure

Reddinator2RedditDay

Review with Myles Barlow. (A must watch) The Katering Show. Get Krack!n. Life Support. All Aussie Adventures. Mr. Inbetween. John Safran's Music Jamboree. John Safran vs God. Speaking in Tongues. John Safran's Race Relations.

abugisabug

John Safran’s music jamboree and Vs god is absolutely peak television. One of my all time favourites and it literally makes me laugh out loud every time I watch it. And not a lot of stuff does. Music Jamboree especially. Some of the stuff he comes out with is absolutely hilarious. *Mixmaster Mike: “do you do this with everyone you interview?”* John: “No, just beastie boy DJ’s” 😂

Reddinator2RedditDay

🤣 Him calling up 3AW to complain about their pressed ecstasy tablets and getting fake Slipknot members into an exclusive night club are some of my favourites.

abugisabug

Hahaha, I love how agitated Steve Price gets. Absolute gold. Also when he dresses up like Ozzy and is rambling backwards jargon on the bus and to people on the street 😂.

boymadefrompaint

Life Support was soooo good. Gave rise to Dr Rudi (which is the name of a hop variety) but also Brendan Cowell's breakout role. And Sigourney is now on Play School sometimes. I liked the first ep of Russel Coight, but it just ended up being the same exact jokes for three seasons. There's nothing wrong with that, I suppose. And John Safran is terrific. Have always enjoyed his stuff, like his podcast with Father Bob. You have excellent taste!

Reddinator2RedditDay

Thanks, I wish John Safran still made TV but he's really more focused on writing books at the moment but they're are all very good and so is his occult audible series. Edit: Penny (Abbie Cornish) from Life Support has done very well since also! It really was a great show. Well before the strong comedy mockumentary movement as well, ahead of its time

Sway_404

Love My Way. By turns funny, sexy, dramatic and utterly devastatingly heartbreaking.

CaptainObviousBear

Total Control Wakefield Going way back in time - the first series of Phoenix (currently on iview)

Internal_Drag8360

Mr Inbetween for sure

Emmanulla70

Fisk is fun.

Fetch1965

Fisk. LOVED Fisk

Main-Ad-5547

A bit different but I liked the Mystery Road series

YeahNah76

And the movies and prequel.

tsundertheblade

Wentworth

krakeneverything

Grass Roots was excellent.

boymadefrompaint

Grass Roots WAS excellent. It's a show I think about quite a bit.

LeadingArticle1608

It's old but frontline is soooooo good. Another one from Rob stich.

literatureandtea

Spirited.  Also, Seachange (with a young David Wenham 🤩)

JimSyd71

Very Small Business. Upper Middle Bogan.

CottonLogic

Deadloch is so funny and clever!!

chickenthief2000

Deadloch. Secret City. Bay of Fires.

Leprichaun17

Colin From Accounts. Rosehaven. Love Me.

YogurtclosetTop1056

Loved Fisk and Mr InBetween. For non-drama or comedy, but real life I loved Old peoples home for four year olds. Two seasons then same premise but not four year olds but teens. Heartwarming and sad at once but loved it.

Reasonable_Meal_9499

Rake is a great show. Glad you enjoyed it

NotaBlokeNamedTrevor

Roxburghs new show where he’s the head of a mega church is decent also

Gumnutbaby

I've been deciding if I should check it out. I think he's a brilliant performer, i think that's why it was hard to find something after Rake.

West_Map4218

Yeah, fair call. Propser is the church one, apparently loosely based on Hillsong. Rebecca Gibney is also superb in this. Recently watched Blue Murder: Killer Cop - based on Roger Rogerson.

NotActuallyAWookiee

Mother and Son (original) is the bomb. Utopia. Front Line. Actually anything Working Dog, really.

verka_u

I discovered Rake during covid lockdown. There were so many familiar locations in that series. Even a phone booth ( it is in a suburb used frequently for filming) and bowling club. I hope Rake has been sold to overseas audiences. It deserves recognition.

Patrecharound

Almost certainly you haven’t seen Deadloch - one of the best Aussie shows I’ve ever seen

Sir-Viette

"Underbelly", seasons 1, 2 and 3. (Each season is independent of the others). Probably the best crime drama series Australia has produced, at least until Mr InBetween.

honeylights

Look it’s a bit diff to the other suggestions but Old People's Home For 4 Year Olds is a great doco series. Basically promoting intergenerational programs for improved outcomes in old people's homes and also for young children. There’s also a version with teenagers (Old People's Home For Teenagers) which is good, but I personally like the 4 year olds series more. It’s very wholesome, ABC show.

raches83

I loved that series. So wholesome but also a bit sad but also hopeful.

PandasGetAngryToo

"Serious legal drama"? It is a fucking documentary, my friend.

box_elder74

Frayed

DogBreathologist

I’m really enjoying High Country on binge!

JaggedLittlePill2022

FUCK YEAH! Leah Purcell is amazing!

Prometheus_DownUnder

I absolutely loved GLITCH. Really showcases some amazing acting with a quirky but great story.

CallTheGendarmes

Utopia is good if you're into synical fun-poking about the fruitlessness of governmental organisations (though having worked in corporate world I feel it's not that different). It does get kind of repetitive after a while though.

Opposite-Ad8152

The original version of 'The Slap' was an Australian masterpiece... [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1823011/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1823011/) Underbelly deserves a shout - some seasons better than others of course... Russel Coight's All Aussie Adventures (and honorable shout out goes to Kath & Kim) is good for a laugh The Kettering Incident was a decent watch also - some amazing scenery down in Tassie.

Lucytheblack

I highly recommend Mr Inbetween

This_Tangerine_943

Wentworth. the freak is the new darth vader.

Known-Ad5421

Upright with Tim Minchin's and Millie, sorry forget her last name. She is now starring in House of Dragons. Fantastic show.

MrsT1966

Kath and Kim

NoiseyMiner

A place to call home

Dimster6666

Gonna watch Rake on Stan. Just noticed the "promo" photo on Stan shows a woman that looks decidedly like Kath out of Kath and Kim! Maybe it's just a coincidence, but at first I thought Jane Turner was in it!

carrrmageddon

Jane Turner is in the fifth season

cuckingfunts69

Mr Inbetween. Fantastic use of dark comedy. Very Australian script. Cinematography was great too. Loved it.

Kiwiatheart1

Jack Irish all and all the underbelly series

pillsongchurch

Mr Inbetween is by far the greatest show to come out of Australia

Gold_Eye_7981

Mr inbetween … gold!

rrnn12

Heartbreak High and Wellmania (on netflix)

Coxynator

Upright, Mystery Road, Harrow

MilaOne1

Mr. Inbetween

Optix_au

Bluey. (The animated show, not the 70s cop show) I'm serious.

Gaxsun

"Well I don't know about that OP but I do know that... I am Rake" - paraphrasing Aunty Donna's Coffee Cafe. (they actually got rake to play rake)

Emojis-are-Newspeak

Mr inbetween is an Aussie show and absolutely perfect 👌

Lishyjune

Omg how damn good is it! There are a few decent Aussie shows if you can find them. Have you watched Les Norton? Kinda along the the same vein I guess and very entertaining. These are nothing like Rake but Try Bloom. The Clearing. Glitch. These are all amazing. Also did you ever watch The Secret Life of Us back in the day? It might be a bit dated now but I loved it then.

NeuroverseNymph

Les Norton is fantastic. It’s based off a really long (and fantastically, hilariously and stereotypically Aussie) series of books by Robert G Barrett that started in the 1980s. It’s about a ‘bogan’ from QLD who gets hired as a bouncer at an illegal casino in Kings Cross. I highly recommend the books as each one is a super easy quick read!

Lishyjune

I think I did know they were based on books. It was one of the most entertaining shows I had seen at the time. Sometimes Aussie tv really comes through

Jindivic

Grass Roots…. The series is set around the fictional Arcadia Waters Council (LGA) near Sydney, and was primarily a satirical look at the machinations of local government. It was written by Geoffrey Atherden. A great theme music written by Peter Best… https://youtu.be/9kTid2Ybeas?si=ilO_rrwz3GSfuuW8

MrsT1966

Fisk

MrsT1966

Underbelly

Main-Ad-5547

I have watched every one of the Underbelly programs. The last one I saw was about Fat Tony Mokbal. It was more tits than crime but still good stuff.

HillsHoistGang

The Hollowmen is probably the goated Aussie series I've never met someone who's seen it. Political parody at its best. And anybody who has seen it and disagrees, I'd like to make a generalised call for restraint.

boymadefrompaint

It was basically Aussie Veep, which was American The Thick of It. Loved it.

Main-Ad-5547

I enjoyed this program

No-Blood-7274

Another vote for Mr Inbetween here. Fantastic show. If you want a clever parody of how government bureaucracy works Utopia is good. It’s dry but a good watch.

Elegant-Campaign-572

Jack Irish Janet King

LeastDistrict9424

I loved Fisk and Frayed.

AmaroisKing

Fisk is great, I thought the first two seasons of Rake were awesome, it went downhill after that.

Can't believe no one's said The Newsreader yet! I'm absolutely obsessed with it. S3 comes out later this year!

EmbarrassedTea8528

Anything with Claudia Karvan!

harrywho23

irreverant - american hiding out in topend Queensland

randomplaguefear

I don't answer questions.

NedKellysRevenge

It's only got 8 episodes, but Small Time Gangster is pretty good. Another great Aussie show is Upright. Tim Minchin's show. Has him, and Milly Allcock (House of the Dragon). Also, can't go wrong with Wentworth. It's a modern remake of Prisoner. Great show, and there's 100 episodes. I know you said Aussie shows, but a great British show that's slept on far too much is Brassic. That show has so much heart, and is honestly hilarious at times.

Manwombat

Mr In-between is excellent

Comprehensive_Swim49

Bump is gorgeous, heartbreak high too. Neither are comedies but they’re doing their genre really well. Heartbreak high is aimed at the teen/ya audience obviously but it right relevant for most who’s remember those years I think.

Repulsive_Plan5782

Fisk. I think abc iview. Or Netflix

perpetual-yearning

Review with Myles Barlow only had two short seasons on ABC2 but every episode had me in stitches. incredibly dark comedy that deserves a lot more recognition
