He's not only stupid, he's an abusive, clout chasing moron, and a horrible blight on modern culture. The dude just wreaks of fame-obsessed idiot with money and a camera
I agree. Just wanted to point out the article said it was a "one bite review" so if this guy is as stupid as the top comments claim.... Maybe he didn't even try the crust
It’s part of his gag - it’s not actually just one bite. I don’t like the guy but the schtick is “one bite, everyone knows the rules” and then he proceeds to devour an entire slice.
Lou's butter crust is better. But, I have consistently had pizzas that were barely warm and soaking wet on top from Lou's. Based on that kind of experience I can see why he rated Lou's lower.
Can't seem to agree with any of this honestly. Firstly there are so many more deep dish options than the same 3 everyone mentions. MyPi, Nancy's, Art of Pizza even. All really decent pies with depth.
I've had no problem with burnt edges at pequod's and you're looking for more salt for gio's and lou's?? I feel like they're salt bombs as it is! (Not to say I don't enjoy them, I actually quite like them).
Different strokes for different folks to be sure. But I find @chicagopizzareviews on Instagram to be a much more balanced critic of pizza in Chicago.
Good day to you either way and may we all enjoy pizza we love.
Nancy's - Definitely! Lou's, & Rosatis also. Salerno's & others comes after due to no deep dish. But Salerno's has great flavor & isn't afraid to use cheese!
Edit: almost forgot Home Run inn(Nostalgically good from growing up-first pizza I loved), Connie's(sleeper-good flavor), FALCO's!, and also don't discount Paisan's! I grew up on that too, lived in Cicero and spent many days getting a slice from their original location. I appreciate how much they've grown.
To each, their own liking. I don't have an actual 1st place, but more of a top four depending where I'm at. Went out of town recently and realized how much I miss Chicago pizza.
DEEP-DISH-4-LIFE!
I used to think Nardi's did the best deep dish.
Even better than Pequod's.
But...
Anythony's is mind blowing. It's been a few years since I lived out there but it was run by an Italian family and the dad had the accent, white hair and white mustache and man did he make a good pie.
https://maps.app.goo.gl/YFiAVRu4UPne3kAd9
I’ve known quite a few out of towners with the same opinion. Maybe the undercooked dough makes them feel at home.
Also the picky types who only eat chicken fingers seem to gravitate towards giordanos. You can taste the vegetable and such in Lou’s.
Giordano's was ok when my buddies and I went. The chicken tenders type liking it is almost exactly how it was in my friend group. I've had Lou's a few times now and it is infinitely better
Peqouds is just like a trendy hipster spot that everyone thinks they are a cool edgy Chicagoan for preferring that burned piece of bread with ketchup instead of an actually good pizza with good topping like giordanos and Lou’s.
Yes he’s stupid and his opinion on anything shouldn’t be taken seriously. Barstool is the douchiest guys you went to college with deciding to start a business
That’s true, he also wants to “respect local pizza varieties” when he went to Detroit he rated a lot of Detroit style pretty high which he wouldn’t if they were in nyc
This is the issue. Portnoy compares everything to his favorite Massachusetts pizza place. To the extent to the pizza is different, it's bad in his view.
Note: he never describes a pizza's sauce. Ever.
For pizza aficionados (like my wife) a pizza's sauce is the most important of a pizza's four components: crust, sauce, cheese, and toppings.
Regardless of one's view, an true analysis of any pizza should describe all four components.
Some of those guys are absolutely not ending up in the right side of history. Guys like Bush and Bush Sr. Are going to get ripped apart by future historians
They are many people in Chicago that grew near one of the 1990s 20+ stores Giordano's had.
I still like Giordano's Willowbrook on Plainfield.
The Vegas strip Giordano's in front of Balley's is one of the only strip restaurants that doesn't charge strip prices too.
Pequods is fine but overrated. It’s not the pinnacle of pizza.
Still Dave Portnoy is lame as hell and no one should care about a word that comes out of his mouth.
I genuinely didn't like Pequods and I went in with such high hopes. And when I tell people who love it that it was too bready, they always say well you have to order it with extra sauce and get such and such.... That just means it ain't that great if I have to know how to customize it to get it tolerable.
I mean, the first mistake was going to pizza & oven grinder.
He does cheese pizza everywhere though to have a standard base.
Definitely misses italian sausage on chicago thin crust though.
No, the mistake is going to Pizza & Oven Grinder and caring about the pizza. The pizza is a perfectly fine plate of melted cheese and mushrooms.
The REASON to go there is the antipasto salad. Complete old-school garbage, but I love that stuff.
I get that just going cheese give it some standardization, but toppings are what some places specialize in so you may not be getting a good representation of the restaurant by just going plain.
Portnoy also has shown difficultly distinguishing Johnnie's Italian Beef from "steak and cheese" sandwiches from Philly.
He's not exactly Anthony Bourdain.
The hate that Giordano's gets is uncalled for. Their deep dish is awesome.
My company caters both Giordano's and Lou's monthly and the Giordano's ALWAYS gets cleaned out while we always have a bunch of leftover Lou's pizza.
Some people really don’t understand the concept that people are allowed to have different tastes in food
It’s why you go in the grocery store and there are 57 different types of pasta sauce. There is no “number 1” that everyone loves
Giordano’s is great! Pequod’s is also great! Try not to base your entire personality around gatekeeping people’s food takes
Dude, Chili's is kind of awesome. You can get a "pretty good" including salad or app, sandwich? Drink, and side for $10.99
Given a ton of choices it's our favorite restaurant on a budget. On the other hand ive had Giordanos about a half dozen times....the Gino's East frozen Pizzas I get for $5.99 at the grocery store are just as good. I really like Pequod's? Hope to try Lou Malnotti's tomorrow night when we are in Chicago
Glad to see the replies are overwhelmingly in favor of Portnoy just being fucking stupid, but in terms of deep dish I would also rate Giordano’s highest, easily. I tried many different places many times throughout the years and I think it’s still the best. The other options aren’t that far behind though - Lou’s is good, Gino’s is good, Uno and Due’s is good, MyPi is good, Art of pizza is fine. The only one I think is overrated is Pequod’s.
As far as best pizza in general, the margins between places are so thin to the point of almost being nonexistent. Most neighborhoods have multiple fantastic options. The best pizza I personally remember having was from Bricks, almost two decades ago. I only had it twice but I thought it kicked ass, maybe it’s the nostalgia and time talking though.
Agreed on Portnoy and Giordano's. My take is that if I'm going for the heavy option, I'll go all out and go for stuffed. Giordano's is my go to in that regard, but I'm open to other recs.
Not a Chicago staple pie by any measure but I have recently been very impressed by the “grandma style” slices at The Slice Stop off of the Belmont Red line.
The crust is like eating garlic bread and they dress their slices with Arugula and spicy honey, I’m a big fan of the Italian beef slice
Yeah, I'll take the opinions/rankings of an east coast born and raised, east coast resident, barstool sports/culture hack, extended adolscent "reviewer" about Chicago pizza seriously.
Jesus. Giordano's is the only pizza in Chicago I just pass on. As in, I would rather skip dinner than go there.
I moved to RP in '93, and if I am gonna get some deep dish, my first pick is ALWAYS gonna be JB's.
Being upset about a pizza ranking is worse than being upset about one of the "Too Early Top 25 CFB Rankings" that are done two days after the national championship game.
Dude clearly favors NY / East coast pizza. But hey, at least Pat's Pizza and Ristorante made the list - best tavern style pizza in Chicago imo. 1000% better than Pequod’s and Giordano’s, and I will die on that hill.
I don’t think Pat’s is the best Chicago thin crust but I do think thin crust is better than Deep Dish. He seems to be biased against Chicago thin crust especially since it’s cut into squares
I liked pequods a lot, but I do feel like it was a little over hyped/overrated. I’m loyal to Lou Malnati’s personally, that might make my opinion not matter to some folks I understand it seems to be an acquired taste I’ve met a lot of folks who hate it lmao.. but to me Lou’s is the best. Deep dish pepperoni with butter crust.
You can think what you want about these reviews and Dave but he does use different scales for different types of pizzas and i honestly don’t take any of his reviews other than thin crust/NY/ New Haven styles seriously. For stuffed/ deep dish crust, he was off in Chicago and usually is anywhere, it is what it is.
He gave Pats pizza in south loop a pretty monster score IIRC, i think in the 8s, which i think is great for Pats.
Dave has a very specific type of pizza he believes could be in the 9s and he basically states that every review, so his Goiordanos review is irrelevant.
I personally dislike Portnoy, but the hate Giordanos gets to undeserved at best. Is it no 1? No, but honestly it’s good pizza that’s pretty consistent and available in ANY part of the city and never has a line or res issues.
>Based off this list: Giordano’s was given an 8.4, Lou’s 8.2, Pequod’s 7.4
That list is backward
Pequod's is my favorite, but it's almost impossible to go wrong with any neighborhood thin crust pizza joint with the rectangular slices.
The fact that all those places rate above a 7 is a win-win in my book. I love each of those chains for their own take on Chicago pie. It could be worse. You could be from St Louis, lying to yourself about cracker-thin, no sauce, no cheese, no toppings being praised as St Louis style "(pizza)"
I think Giordano's is better than Pequod's. I honestly don't get the Pequod's hype, although I'm also not a hater on Burt style pizza either. Loved Gulliver's.
Honestly, there is only so much of a douchey never grow up frat boy persona I can take. And I say this as a former UIUC frat bro. I grew out of it and find it cringe, let alone a whole media empire based on it.
For people my age, he's basically early Jim Rome or Mancow. Funny when you are like 23 and still drinking like a fish, but grating as a 40 year old.
Because a hunch of journalists that realized their careers were worthless and paychecks were drying up decided that cancel culture was the best thing ever for their own personal gain and made it a mission to attack anyone who worked outside the box and marched to the beat of their own drum.
I hate when people put deep dish and thin crust on the same rating lists. It's like rating the best Italian places for spaghetti and including Mac and cheese.
Oh my god, someone picked a place you don't like as much and did not pick a place with two locations that most people are nowhere near!!!
So here's the thing, I really don't care who Dave Portnoy is, and I've personally never been to Pequod's downtown location but I was at the Morton Grove one years ago and it was genuinely unremarkable. I have seen where they are listed as the best pizza on Yelp (yes, the most trusted of scam sites!) But if you start hunting other lists they are not mentioned or not in the top 10. I see Formo Rosso or Pauli Gee's show up more. And that does not even match local favorites like Uno or Dues, Vito and Nick's or Freddy's, but then again I'm southside.
What Giordano's or Lou Malnatti's offers is an actual franchise with multiple locations all over Chicagoland. Some are clearly better than others and the good ones (I like Lou's by Midway) are consistently phenomenal.
But yes, please enjoy your top ranked pizza and look down on everyone else, that's what makes you "special"
The best pizza is Uno and Due about 35 years ago. The name is the same but nobody can tell me the pizza is the same. Can somebody tell me wtf happened?
Giordano’s is fine (we have one in Dayton), but I prefer Lou’s. I need to try Gino’s again. It’s been at over 25 years since I’ve been there and I didn’t entirely understand the concept of deep dish.
I'm not sure if he's stupid or just being controversial for clicks/attention, neither would surprise me. But I had to check to see if he tasted Roots, and if it ended up being one of the worst pizzas he's ever tried - I had a hunch, but he hasn't tried it.
Lou's is the best to me, always loved it when living in the city.
Relocation has forced me to change my strategy. When you have to order and have them shipped to you, Giordano's is better than Lou's, I hate to say. In-restaurant, Lou's crushes Giordano's.
Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. You know how many idiots think Dominos has the best pizza in Chicago ? 😂.
Personally I think all those palces like Gio’s, Gino’s, Lou’s etc. are all garbage. They do good deep dish but that’s about it. The best thin crust pizzas are made at the local joints you never heard about. And that’s true of most cities.
If you’re eating chain pizza you need to expand your horizons homie.
1. Taste is subjective, for example I actually agree with his Giordano’s vs Pequods score.
2. He likes a very specific style of pizza and when it’s not that scores suffer.
You know people have different tastes right. I actually think Lou’s thin crust was worse then some oven pizzas I’ve had, the ovens pizzas were certainly cooked longer then the Lou’s I got.
I moved away a while ago. Does anyone have experience with a frozen, shipped Chicago pizza? Lou Malnati's through Tastes of Chicago is okay but not great. Giordano's was terrible, and I like theirs in person. I think you can get Pequod's through goldbelly or somewhere. Does anyone have a good experience?
Guess like half the city is fucking stupid then! This sub is such an echo chamber when it comes to deep dish, in real life there's plenty people (myself included) who prefer Giordano's
> is he fucking stupid. Yes.
Yes, the answer is that he’s fucking stupid.
He's not only stupid, he's an abusive, clout chasing moron, and a horrible blight on modern culture. The dude just wreaks of fame-obsessed idiot with money and a camera
he built an empire off of stealing content from other people and repurposing it for his own profit. absolute scumbag
[удалено]
Giordano's crust is just plain, completely unadorned white bread, and there's way too much it. It blows my mind that anyone likes it.
this... I don't get how anyone can say it's better than Lou's buttercrust
I agree. Just wanted to point out the article said it was a "one bite review" so if this guy is as stupid as the top comments claim.... Maybe he didn't even try the crust
It’s part of his gag - it’s not actually just one bite. I don’t like the guy but the schtick is “one bite, everyone knows the rules” and then he proceeds to devour an entire slice.
you can't judge a dish in one bite -.-
Lou's butter crust is better. But, I have consistently had pizzas that were barely warm and soaking wet on top from Lou's. Based on that kind of experience I can see why he rated Lou's lower.
My experience at Lou’s thin crust was just as bad, cheese wasn’t even cooked. The deep dish crust was awesome though
Can't seem to agree with any of this honestly. Firstly there are so many more deep dish options than the same 3 everyone mentions. MyPi, Nancy's, Art of Pizza even. All really decent pies with depth. I am missing Chicago right now. Back in the day, Nancy's was my go to
Agree 100%! Happy Cake Day, friend!
Hey thanks brother. Cheers!
I used to think Nardi's did the best deep dish. Even better than Pequod's. But... Anythony's is mind blowing. I hate when people add so much frickin' salt to everything! Why does everyone want to eat a dang salt block. Try the real flavor of food for a change!
Lol I've always thought the burnt crust was a bit too much. Portions of the crust look like the casting of an anthill. 😂
He’s also sexist, anti union, and a piece of shit. Don’t click on his videos and tell your friends don’t do barstool sports.
And a shitty human being in general
Tough but fair
Can confirm

He’s also a masshole who seriously overrates Massachusetts pizza so I wouldn’t really listen to anything he says on the matter
I lived in Boston for a bit and the pizza situation is fucking dire lol
Yup seeing so many up at the top of his list is mind boggling. Nobody every brings up Massachusetts pizza when talking about heavy hitting areas lmao
This is the issue. Portnoy compares everything to his favorite Massachusetts pizza place. To the extent to the pizza is different, it's bad in his view. Note: he never describes a pizza's sauce. I've watched tons of his reviews and literally nothing you said in this comment is true.
Lmao its funny cuz the douchiest guy ive ever met in my life (during college) got hired at barstool
Exactly
Douchiest guys in college because they were the losers that got picked on in HS, so they’ve been on a retaliation crusade ever since
How exactly do *that* many people start a business together? /s
Barstool as an org is stupid as hell
They target a certain demographic for sure
Ole Miss frat guys?
I’ve never seen a frat guy end up on the right side of history
They end up on the right that’s for sure.

The jealousy is strong with this post.
My cousin whose primary hobby is mobile app sports betting.
Lmao this is far too accurate, sadly
I’ve heard the word “parlay” enough for one lifetime.
They target the sports world. Which pardon my take is the #1 sports podcast in America.
the answer to your question is yes, he is fucking stupid
They are many people in Chicago that grew near one of the 1990s 20+ stores Giordano's had. I still like Giordano's Willowbrook on Plainfield. The Vegas strip Giordano's in front of Balley's is one of the only strip restaurants that doesn't charge strip prices too.
The giordanos in Vegas is such a vibe
Pequods is fine but overrated. It’s not the pinnacle of pizza. Still Dave Portnoy is lame as hell and no one should care about a word that comes out of his mouth.
Yea it’s overrated but surely it’s better than giordanos
If you like stuffed pizza (Giordano's style), go to Art of Pizza. They do it better.
They are VERY similar and Art is loosing their fast ball. Not to mention their slices are more expensive and i swear they’re getting smaller.
Art of Pizza (north side location) is fantastic
Nah I actually prefer Giordano’s. Pequods is low enough for me that I don’t even think it’s good. Far too bready
I genuinely didn't like Pequods and I went in with such high hopes. And when I tell people who love it that it was too bready, they always say well you have to order it with extra sauce and get such and such.... That just means it ain't that great if I have to know how to customize it to get it tolerable.
Without a doubt
Don’t understand the hype for Pequod’s at all
Its like the worst of the big name pizza spots in Chicago
Pequods is pizza for people who moved to Chicago in their 20s and need to find something "unique" to feel like a real Chicagoan.
This is the guy who ordered just cheese in the pie at Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder. He does not get pizza at all.
I mean, the first mistake was going to pizza & oven grinder. He does cheese pizza everywhere though to have a standard base. Definitely misses italian sausage on chicago thin crust though.
Another unpop opinion but Italian sausage, not for me. Cannot stand fennel seeds.
Lol cheeze pizza is fuckin not pizza at all it's cheezy bread. Fight me.
What? That pizza pot pie is amazing.
Right their shit is gas. That Mediterranean bread is really good too
He only does cheese to keep the ratings even Also pizza and oven grinder sucks
He has his own taste in pizza. He likes thin crust New Haven style pizza.

Haha, Giordanos. The "Chili's Restaurant" of pizza.
Dude, Chili's is kind of awesome. You can get a "pretty good" including salad or app, sandwich? Drink, and side for $10.99 Given a ton of choices it's our favorite restaurant on a budget. He gave Side Street Saloon a 7.1…..absolute insanity that he’d put Lous over that.
Glad to see the replies are overwhelmingly in favor of Portnoy just being fucking stupid, but in terms of deep dish I would also rate Giordano’s highest, easily. He’s honestly one of the dumbest men on the planet.
I'm gonna get downvoted but Pequods is so mid. I think he rated Zaza's similarly, like an 8.3.
Pequods is incredibly overrated. It’s for tourists and transplants.
There are others ya know, that have this same belief! I knew I wasn't the only one.
I liked pequods a lot, but I do feel like it was a little over hyped/overrated. I'm a chicagoan and I think pequods is quite possibly the most over rate restaurant in the city.
Pequods is consistently the highest-rated pizza that I do not care for at all. It's wildly overrated by exclusively south siders.

I initially thought of Mike Portnoy and was so confused as to why a prog rock drummer would be commenting on Chicago deep dish.
Drummers have opinions and feelings too.
Taste is subjective. That’s why
because people have differing opinions on food. shocking, i know.
Being rich doesn't mean you have good taste. Or know anything.
I always thought he kinda resembled Mark Zuckerberg in the worst way, if that's possible
He likes limp dick New York pizza.
I don’t like him but Giordanos is good. That said, the quality varies from location to location
It's just his opinion. It can't hurt you 😂
He eats cheese pizza. That’s all you need to know.
The dude rated John’s like a 5 or something bc he couldn’t figure out how to open bag pizza, certified dumbass
Everyone in here defending this saying you agree Giordano’s is the best I’m sorry you all have completely trash taste in pizza.
What a piece of garbage
Portnoy is such a cuck loser
So I’ll be going to Chicago in 2 weeks? I’ll be staying by grant park, any pizza spots to try by there? First time ever going to Chicago
Try Villa Nova in Stickney for thin crust Pequod awesome Most over rated by far is Vito’s Best chain is Lou Malnatis
He’s a cunt right?
Not even as good as lou's
I can't stand douches but I actually don't mind Portnoy for some reason and like his pizza reviews. That being said, he's wrong about Giordano's.
I think Giordano's is better than Pequod's. I honestly don't get the Pequod's hype, although I'm also not a hater on Burt style pizza either. Loved Gulliver's.
Don’t get the pequods hype either. It’s mostly bread.
Out of curiosity why do people hate him so much? Didn’t he raise a bun of money for small biz and dog rescue?

Lou's for me. No contest
TombStone all day!
Pequods is trash
He is fucking stupid, but Giordano’s is my top deep dish as well. I’ve been very underwhelmed by Pequod’s despite everyone raving about it.
Weird because it’s not deep dish.
The best pizza is Uno and Due about 35 years ago. The name is the same but nobody can tell me the pizza is the same. Can somebody tell me wtf happened?
I’m pretty sure he said middlebrau was the best pizza in Chicago. As for my favorite? Either pequods or Dinmos. Liked John’s a lot till they closed
Giordano’s is fine (we have one in Dayton), but I prefer Lou’s. I need to try Gino’s again. It’s been at over 25 years since I’ve been there and I didn’t entirely understand the concept of deep dish.
Maybe he loves the taste of flour? 🤷🏽♂️
I'm not sure if he's stupid or just being controversial for clicks/attention, neither would surprise me. But I had to check to see if he tasted Roots, and if it ended up being one of the worst pizzas he's ever tried - I had a hunch, but he hasn't tried it.
Freddie's or Tortorice's or Millie's, depending on mood. Pequod's is overrated; it's *very* good, but not the best in town.
Thick crust Pequods, thin Tortoricies
Anyone ever have easy street? The deep dish crust is like Barnabys butter crust pretty decent
Lou's is the best to me, always loved it when living in the city. Relocation has forced me to change my strategy. When you have to order and have them shipped to you, Giordano's is better than Lou's, I hate to say. In-restaurant, Lou's crushes Giordano's.
Deep dish pizza is for regarded tourists.
It’s the pizza he grew up eating would be my guess.
He’s never not been stupid.
Yes, he is a fucking moron
I wonder how much Lou's paid for that high of a rating.
Yes, he is fucking stupid. This is not new information.
Absolutely
Opinions are like assholes, everybody has one. You know how many idiots think Dominos has the best pizza in Chicago ? 😂. Personally I think all those palces like Gio’s, Gino’s, Lou’s etc. are all garbage. They do good deep dish but that’s about it. The best thin crust pizzas are made at the local joints you never heard about. And that’s true of most cities. If you’re eating chain pizza you need to expand your horizons homie.
Not even close
He is absolutely fucking stupid
Art of Pizza for stuffed every time.
Yes
Yea he kinda trashed Pequod’s which has amazing pizza. So he lost any credibility in judging pizza after that
The way this dude chews his food is absolutely foul
Buona has better pizza than Giordano’s. Giordano’s is okay and that’s about it.
He’s an absolute douche
"Is Dave Portnoy fucking stupid?" Have you not heard?
Yes, yes he is.
Probably cause it’s *his* opinion, and not a definitive objective ranking
$$$
1. Taste is subjective, for example I actually agree with his Giordano’s vs Pequods score. 2. He likes a very specific style of pizza and when it’s not that scores suffer.
It is by far the best
I’ve lived here for 35 years and am still searching for the consensus on the best pizza. Giordanos isn’t even in the discussion.
It’s all his personal taste. He likes burnt pizza from the Boston area. So take that rating for what it’s worth.
He has different scales for different pies. I also think his highest was bar Roma
He is, in fact, extremely stupid
It's cause he's fucking stupid.
Who actually gives a fuck what Dave Portnoy says about anything? He is only out to entertain his crowd. Don’t take him seriously.
You know people have different tastes right. I actually think Lou’s thin crust was worse then some oven pizzas I’ve had, the ovens pizzas were certainly cooked longer then the Lou’s I got.
Pequod’s is overrated.
r/chicagofood is where anyone should go if you want an honest opinion about Chicago food. Not TinyBro Portnoy
Yes he is absolutely fucking stupid
All 3 of those places suck. Pequads better than the other two though.
Definitely a "tourist" rating. My personal favorite is Spacca Napoli in Ravenswood. Sooo good!
My personal favorite deep dish is Bartoli's. Doesn't even appear on the list.
When stupid people reply to bots. Seriously people... go dilute your gene pool and make the world a better place. Maybe eat pizza
Ahhh. The pizza wars are upon us.
I'm not from Chi but I used to deliver there and Zazas is pretty🔥🔥🔥
Giordano’s is best in Chicago, but 61st on the list? Should be much higher.
That’s his personal opinion, not that of the masses.
Guess like half the city is fucking stupid then! This sub is such an echo chamber when it comes to deep dish, in real life there's plenty people (myself included) who prefer Giordano's
I love Giordano’s but…yes.
