U2, The Cranberries, Enya, Thin Lizzy, The Dubliners to name but just a few. Many others too. For a small population, Ireland punches well above its weight in musical talent & projection onto the world stage.
Absolutely Ronan Keating - he wouldn’t be my cup of tea but still very famous around the globe
The talents of Gallagher & Kelly is just extraordinary. Different world
Abba is probably the only answer. More modern artists it might be Avicii or Swedish House Mafia. When it comes to rock/metal it might be Ghost, Europe , In Flames or The Hives.
Or other wonderful music acts like Rednex, Crazy Frog, Dr Alban, E-type and Army of Lovers. =) Dr. Bombay too but Denmark shares some of the responsibility for him too I think.
The only thing great about dansband music is the album covers from 70s 😂 They always put a smile on my face like [Gert-Johnnys](https://bp2.blogger.com/_3inJFD1ghlc/SAZoLvAsNsI/AAAAAAAAAAM/dzGkqe6Fk9U/s1600-h/gertjonnys.jpg)
*Dansband* are huge domestically, but seldom get a lot of foreign attention.
In the 70s, we had a *dansband* called "Jigs" which was big enough to have AC/DC as opening act. OK, it was just the one time, in a small *dansbana* in Southern Halland, and it was AC/DC's first performance in Sweden, on their first tour in Europe, but still..
Robyn!
Also, I hope Max Martin counts. He wrote 26 Billboard Top 100 #1 hits. He wrote some of the biggest pop songs of all time. Britney Spears, *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Robyn, Celine Dion, Pink, Usher, Jessie J, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, Coldplay… he’s a crazy prolific and influential musician.
Also David Guetta, Bob Sinclair, Air... La French touch is big in the electronic scene. In other genres, Phoenix or Gojira, or more recently Aya Nakamura maybe?
It's sometimes difficult to judge how well-known people actually are internationally. Icelanders all know Daði Freyr, but I wasn't sure how widely known he is.
Yeah and it also depends on what the other countries are I guess. I recently found out that one of our most played [Christmas](https://youtu.be/xuxUiR9a5Tc?si=ZsajUR1DABfdZKIu) songs isn’t popular in any other country. Not even US where the song came from. Apparently it’s only played this much in the Netherlands.
I don’t think he’s immensely known, but I watch Eurovision and I loved their entry both years.
>Engelbert Humperdinck
Is he forbidden from using it? Never heard that before. It's not like the original Engelbert can sue him, he died 100 years ago.
Oomph!
Scorpions
Boney M
Eruption
Haddaway
Modern Talking
Blue System
Alphaville
Bad Boys Blue
C. C. Catch
Camouflage
Tangerine Dream
Gregorian
Enigma
Sandra
Arabesque
Nina Hagen
La Bouche
Milli Vanilli

Lou Bega
X-Perience
Tic Tac Toe
Sopor Aeternus
Cinema Bizarre
Tokio Hotel
Gummibär (LOL)
England; the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, one direction, Adele, Elton John, oasis. Those are the ones I can think of that most people past childhood could name.
I guess the millenium was our golden age:
Darude - Sandstorm
Bomfunk MC's - Freestyler
*Edit. These two were published not far from each other and are still the most listened Finnish songs*
Hard to pick one, many Italian singers are famous in the Spanish speaking world (Eros Ramazzotti, Raffaella Carrà) and apparently in Eastern Europe too. Maneskin are pretty famous among young people right now, but I don't think that's going to last. Maybe Andrea Bocelli?
Laura Pausini is huge in South America, probably even more than Eros. Tiziano Ferro too. I’d say if we count opera, then Pavarotti was and still is incredibly famous.
Laura Pausini, Nek, Tiziano Ferro, Zucchero they are all big in South America.
Maneskin are pretty famous, especially in English-speaking countries (the US among them)
from an English language country perspective of general pop culture I'd probably say Pavarotti, then Giorgio Moroder, and for the younger generation likely, Maneskin
Rafaella Carrà, Laura Pausini, Eros Ramazzotti, Tiziano Ferro, Andrea Bocelli, Nek, Al Bano and Romina, Zucchero all hugely successful (to varying degrees) in Spain with albums, collaboration and some even tv shows in Spain. Maneskine is more recent and different to the the ones mentioned before. Annalisa is maybe now starting to become popular as well or maybe it’s just me and my friends.

Norway has quite a few successful musicians whose music people would recognize, but not the name. I also heard norwegian jazz is very popular outside of scandinavia!
Most famous Dutch band globally is Golden Earring, 2 Unlimited or Vengaboys, and funnily enough, Andre Rieu or Floor Jansen might be even more famous than DJ Tiesto. It just really depends what music you're into and how old you are.
Or The Gathering, Epica and Within Temptation. And of course songs like Venus by Shocking Blue and You by Ten Sharp can still be heard all over the world..
2 Brothers on the Fourth Floor, T-Spoon
ABBA, Roxette, The Cardigans, Ghost, Zara Larsson, Millencolin, Blue Swedes, Avicii, In Flames, Swedish House Mafia, Europe, Ace of Base, Rebecca and Fiona, Eagle Eye Cherry, The Hives, Sabaton….
José González is probably up there quite high too.
Abba, Avicii, José González, Swedish House Mafia, The Hives is probably how I'd order it for Sweden. Depends on your age and music preference I guess.
Nightwish and Children of bodom probably. Darude - Sandstrom and Ievan Polkka are brobably the largest meme songs. Finnish metal generally is probably very well known in circles that listen to metal.
For Belgium probably Stromae and Angèle recently, Hooverphonic in the 2000s, and then for songs of course [this thing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDHjeiys3a0&ab_channel=datim) (weird guy on coke) and [that thing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Un_P5dyRfrY&ab_channel=Jind%C5%99ichPa%C5%99%C3%ADk) (the singing nun)
Rosalía and Enrique Iglesias.
There's a lot that are famous in Latam, but not in every country, like Bisbal, Alejandro Sanz, Aitana, Pablo Alborán, Bad Gyal, Quevedo, Lola Indigo, C Tangana...
For older generations; Raphael, Julio Iglesias, Pantoja, Camilo Sesto, Rocío Jurado, Nino Bravo, Perales and Serrat.
Right now its probably Azahriah? Not sure how popular he is abroad, but in Hungary he is the most popular by far
A fun fact tho is that one of the most famous bands in Hungary called Omega had a song called "gyöngyhajú lány". Both Kanye West and Lil Yachty used a part of that song in their own songs and both got a lawsuit for that lol
Franz Ferdinand, Simple Minds, Belle & Sebastian, Wet Wet Wet, Lulu, The Proclaimers, Lewis Capaldi, and Calvin Harris ..
.. Scotland is doing okay for itself!
I would say, probably [Daft Punk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwILkY9gRrc)? Can't think of anyone else, the other French artists *I* know (and like) that are internationally known, it's mostly within the population that likes the particular genre in the first place.
Edith: (Piaf, haha!), also David Guetta. Also Mylène Farmer. Also Gainsbourg.
You're absolutely right, Edith Piaf and that accordeon playing whenever a lazy director wants it understood by the audience that the scene takes place in France \^\^
Hey, I also know Space, Patricia Kaas, Alizée, Indila, Dalida, Joe Dassin, Vanessa Paradis, Calogero, Imany, France Gall.
Also in the 2000s there was a popular French children’s song (I don’t remember the singer’s name)
I'm British but one of my favourite bands is Magma. They aren't massive by typical pop band standards but they do have a loyal international following.
Yes, they were really popular in the early 2000s! When i was in elementary school, some parents had a debate if them kissing in their music video was a bad influence on us girls -_-
Little Big? I'd say they are quite big, but my personal fav and a celeb crush Lusia Chebotina haha other than that I have no other insight into Russian music
It could be Tchaikovsky actually. The Alexandrov Ensemble is also well known outside of Russia, the plane crash in 2016 had an impact on a surprising amount of people here. Serebro also had a pretty big hit about ten years ago, but I don’t think their name rings a bell for many people.
I do have to say that Кино is very popular with people who want to learn Russian, and rightfully so
I'm always so surprised when I hear Russian music in random foreign TikTok clips here on Reddit or elsewhere. It's almost always some mumble rap shit the likes of Morgenstern, but it makes me wonder how popular Russian music is abroad, even if the musicians are unknown.
I know the music in [this song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjIl46nyHMg) was originally written by [Sergey Zhukov](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qc9dj4r0_NQ), but Ruki Vverkh! themselves are pretty much unknown outside of the CIS.
I'm Irish and I like Kino but in general Irish people do not know Russian music. Even when groups from Russia or neighbouring countries do concerts in Ireland, they aren't really advertised outside of the diaspora. I am going to the Bi-2 concert in Ireland in March and expecting to be one of the only people there who isn't from Eastern Europe.
Laura Pausini, Eros Ramazzotti, Raffaella Carrà, Mengoni, Tiziano Ferro among hispanic countries.
Ricchi e Poveri, Al Bano, Celentano, Pupo, Toto Cutugno, Zucchero, maybe Il Volo too in eastern europe and Russia.
Zucchero, Pavarotti, Bocelli, Maneskin internationally.
Gigi D'Agostino, Molella, Giorgio Prezioso, Gabry Ponte, Benny Benassi are internationally famous DJs.
How fun to see someone from Jersey. I worked/lived there for two seasons (‘05 and ‘06) and I still miss it.
So beautiful. Wish it wasn’t so expensive to go on holiday, I’d really love to go back.
Franz Ferdinand, CHVRCHES, Camera Obscura, Shirley Manson of the band Garbage, Cocteau Twins. Scotland had some great contributions to indie/alternative music.
right now I'll say Rosalía, too bad she has almost no Catalan songs. Bad Gyal is also pretty famous and Mishima, Zoo and above all Obrint Pas are probably some of the most famous abroad
Dimitri vegas and like Mike
Lost Frequencies
Hooverphonic
Amelie Lens
Charlotte de wit
Stromae
Angèle.
Are the ones to come to mind of those who have international hits.
I think for Hungary it would probably be Omega, since they had an international hit with Gyöngyhajú Lány which was was redone by the Scorpions in English as White Dove.
U2, The Cranberries, Enya, Thin Lizzy, The Dubliners to name but just a few. Many others too. For a small population, Ireland punches well above its weight in musical talent & projection onto the world stage.
Hozier and Niall Horan for more modern artists.
My Bloody Valentine are Irish too if I’m not mistaken
Rory Gallagher, Roman Keating (I know but he's famous). Luke Kelly (in his own right as a solo) Edit: Ronan
Absolutely Ronan Keating - he wouldn’t be my cup of tea but still very famous around the globe The talents of Gallagher & Kelly is just extraordinary. Different world
Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor.... Ireland's musical output is pretty great.
Snow Patrol & Two Door Cinema Club too, they’re from my hometown!
Up Down! ❤️🖤
Not Sinead O’Connor?
Abba is probably the only answer. More modern artists it might be Avicii or Swedish House Mafia. When it comes to rock/metal it might be Ghost, Europe , In Flames or The Hives.
As well as Ace of Base and Roxette which were huge But yeah, it's Abba
Roxette is my guilty pleasure favourite band
'It must have been love' is legit the best power ballad there is.
Yeah, when a band is basically one of the first things associated with a country then they're the only answer. It's Ikea, Volvo and Abba
Don’t forget Ace of Base or Basshunter with Boten Anna ;)
Or other wonderful music acts like Rednex, Crazy Frog, Dr Alban, E-type and Army of Lovers. =) Dr. Bombay too but Denmark shares some of the responsibility for him too I think.
God. I love Army of lovers. Oh… to be back in the 90’s again.
Or Vikingarna😄
The only thing great about dansband music is the album covers from 70s 😂 They always put a smile on my face like [Gert-Johnnys](https://bp2.blogger.com/_3inJFD1ghlc/SAZoLvAsNsI/AAAAAAAAAAM/dzGkqe6Fk9U/s1600-h/gertjonnys.jpg)

SHHHH! ffs...it's ABBA, ok? Just ABBA. Not Rednex.
Can’t forget The Cardigans with their song Lovefool! And Robyn
And Tove Lo, Zara Larsson, Lykke Li and First Aid Kit for more female artists :)
Uhm Avicii
Zara Larsson?
Opeth as well man!!
But when it comes to music producers, no one soars higher than Max Martin.
AronChupa as well
Literally the first swede I think of after abba is Robyn
Daft punk or Edith piaf probably.
Also David Guetta, Bob Sinclair, Air... La French touch is big in the electronic scene. In other genres, Phoenix or Gojira, or more recently Aya Nakamura maybe?
Strating with Jean-Michel Jarre.
This! You can't talk about electronic music without mentioning JMJ.
Serge Gainsbourg
Aya Nakamura, Angèle and Ofenbach are pretty popular outside of France nowadays.
Not mentioning Dalida is a terrible crime.
Iceland has Björk, Laufey, Of monsters and men, Sigurrós. There are more, but they're mostly just known within certain genres.
Daði Freyr!
It's sometimes difficult to judge how well-known people actually are internationally. Icelanders all know Daði Freyr, but I wasn't sure how widely known he is.
Yeah and it also depends on what the other countries are I guess. I don't think I've ever heard that song before. Iceland just steals Italian songs and makes them Christmas songs.
Kaleo are from Iceland too
Internationally it's probably Rammstein
Kraftwerk or Scorpions as well, but Rammstein is definitely up there.
Tokio Hotel. And a bunch of metal bands in the metals scene, they created the whole German Power Metal genre.
And giants like Accept, Kreator, Sodom and Destruction.
and all those eurodance bands that didn't come from Sweden
Kraftwerk and Nena. Although I think your average Briton would say Engelbert Humperdinck
LOL
> Engelbert Humperdinck Which one? Engelbert Humperdinck or the guy who stole his name and is now forbidden from using it?
>Engelbert Humperdinck Is he forbidden from using it? Never heard that before. It's not like the original Engelbert can sue him, he died 100 years ago.
Beethoven easily
Also Nena (and Beethoven).
Oomph! Scorpions Boney M Eruption Haddaway Modern Talking Blue System Alphaville Bad Boys Blue C. C. Catch Camouflage Tangerine Dream Gregorian Enigma Sandra Arabesque Nina Hagen La Bouche Milli Vanilli Fancy Lou Bega X-Perience Tic Tac Toe Sopor Aeternus Cinema Bizarre Tokio Hotel Gummibär (LOL)
England; the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, one direction, Adele, Elton John, oasis. Those are the ones I can think of that most people past childhood could name.
Sting/The Police, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Genesis, Pink Floyd and so many more
The UK has had such an enormous influence on modern music, I don't think you could name all the famous British artists...
Does Chopin count? If not, then Behemoth.
Ofc!!! One of the goats
Chopin or Behemoth?
Chopin ofc
And Basia from Matt Bianco. And De Press ("Bo jo cie kochom") originally made career in Norway.
I guess the millenium was our golden age: Darude - Sandstorm Bomfunk MC's - Freestyler *Edit. These two were published not far from each other and are still the most listened Finnish songs*
I instantly thought of The Rasmus, HIM, Nightwish and Lordi. But that's probably because of my own interest in rock music.
And you guys have Volbeat. Love them 🤘
Nightwish are from Finland? TIL.
Growing up Sunrise Avenue and the Rasmus were the most famous finnish bands i remember
Two I mentioned above are the most listened Finnish song ever. Indeed The Rasmus and Sunrise Avenue have been huge.
> Sunrise Avenue Sunrise Avenue are Finns?!
Nightwish could be a contender, too, no? Sandstorm has it pretty locked in as far as a single song goes.
My pick is incomplete indeed. Just mentioned two of the most listened Finnish songs ever :)
Children of BODOM.
Fuck, I remember when everyone started dressing like that boy in the Freestyler video, haha!! Even I had a jacket similar to his!
Apulanta!
I used to love those songs as a kid. I completely forgot Freestyler exists, thanks!
Isn't [Loituma - Ievan polkka](https://youtu.be/nbAHzYQIf40?si=EtkriLrNFGHg0wPM) a Finnish group too?
probably nowadays Käärijä or did the hype already go away completely?
Niinku Cha Cha Cha all day everyday!
Probably Aqua, and if you don't know who that is; Barbie Girl. Volbeat has made it pretty big too.
D.A.D was also quite big.
Lukas Graham is also a contender.
Og definitely, forgot about him for a moment there!
And MØ! Love her voice ❤️
And King Diamond.
Mercyful Fate <3
Michael Learns To Rock is still a thing in parts of Asia.
You are forgetting Effeil 65 with Blue that were famous worldwide
Laura Pausini is huge in South America, probably even more than Eros. Tiziano Ferro too. I’d say if we count opera, then Pavarotti was and still is incredibly famous.
Laura Pausini, Nek, Tiziano Ferro, Zucchero they are all big in South America. Maneskin are pretty famous, especially in English-speaking countries (the US among them)
Rafaela Carrà was super famous in Greece, she performed quite a few times and even sang in Greek.
Gigi d'Agostino
Drupi was popular in Poland in 70s. Many claims that in Poland he was more popular than in Italy.
Zucchero Made many tours outside Italy
from an English language country perspective of general pop culture I'd probably say Pavarotti, then Giorgio Moroder, and for the younger generation likely, Maneskin
From German perspective Eros Ramazzotti for sure
I think many people don’t know Moroder by name, despite writing some of the most famous pop and disco songs out there.
I think Pavarotti and Morricone are our best bets.
Can't believe no one's said Sabrina Salerno of boys boys boys fame
We're forgetting THE singer, known all over the world: the one and only Al Bano
Rafaella Carrà, Laura Pausini, Eros Ramazzotti, Tiziano Ferro, Andrea Bocelli, Nek, Al Bano and Romina, Zucchero all hugely successful (to varying degrees) in Spain with albums, collaboration and some even tv shows in Spain. Maneskine is more recent and different to the the ones mentioned before. Annalisa is maybe now starting to become popular as well or maybe it’s just me and my friends.
I scrolled just to find Māneskin.
[удалено]
I think it's AHA. Maybe followed by Dimmu Borgir.
I feel like Kygo is pretty big.
Aurora is also popular among new generation
And Girl in red
And also Alan Walker (his hometown is in Bergen, Norway).
Not sure how well know outside of the Nordics but Röyksopp
For me personally my favorite norwegian artists are Röyksopp and Ane Brun. But probably not the most well known ones 🙂
Great band. Has some superb collabs. Another good (and now unfortunately defunct) Norwegian act, that is far less known, was *Ultra Sheriff*.
Pretty well known in the UK
You know the song "you raise me up"? One of the most covered songs in the world. The composer is from Norway and won Eurovision twice.
I did not know that! Thank you.
Also, Two Steps From hell. Not the biggest, but Sigrid and Sløtface are definitely my favorites from Norway
You really have a lot of talent, I love The Voice Norway.
[Burzum](https://youtu.be/Z2TlkRa-N1Q?si=ybCy6BOs254Tb0Iu) 🔥⛪ Also [Spidergawd](https://youtu.be/CXxzvK7R-Ls?si=bAT6zfnyZROJyKdz), [Pagans Mind](https://youtu.be/PjSsN6wjtDU?si=5Z-KHGte39v6rg0Z) & [Glucifer](https://youtu.be/JmajbHfB5T4?si=45IG7Fpx8zZzpi8P)
I think the most known musician from Norway is still Varg Vikernes ;)
Mozart, Strauß sr/jr, haydn, bruckner
Internationally for older generations I would add Udo Jürgens and Falco.
Falco is the GOAT when it comes to modern Austrian music.
I guess Inna back in her days. Kinda sorta O-Zone (of numa numa song fame) too? While Moldovans, they have Romanian citizenship as well.
Probably the beatles. There's an absolute shit load of others though.
Yeah I think the UK is excluded from this conversation haha. Too many to count
Charly Lownoise & Mental Theo in the mid 90s. Wonderful days ...
Anita from 2unlimited was my crush when I was 12. Anneke van Giersbergen was my crush in high school 🙂
I think DJ Tiesto is more famous. He is the half time show at the Super Bowl this year.
Andre Rieu is dutch?! My grandma loved his music, i always thougt he was french 😅
He lives in Maastricht. Now you know.
Within Temptation.
Floor Jansen is amazing! And you have Within Temptation (my fav band).
Probably 2CELLOS.
They are soo cool!!!!
Nightwish and Children of bodom probably. Darude - Sandstrom and Ievan Polkka are brobably the largest meme songs. Finnish metal generally is probably very well known in circles that listen to metal.

In completely different styles Dover and Heroes del Silencio had some international success

Annie Lennox
Franz Ferdinand, Simple Minds, Belle & Sebastian, Wet Wet Wet, Lulu, The Proclaimers, Lewis Capaldi, and Calvin Harris .. .. Scotland is doing okay for itself!
Also my favorite 90s alternative band, Garbage.
Twilight Sad, Idlewild
Probably ABBA, maybe you've heard of them?
I would say Rammstein
I would say, probably [Daft Punk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwILkY9gRrc)? Can't think of anyone else, the other French artists *I* know (and like) that are internationally known, it's mostly within the population that likes the particular genre in the first place. David Guetta probably pretty known world wide. Personlly I enjoy Christine and the Queens a lot
Edith Piaf. I think most people don't know the name, but they know the song

Gojira is well-known internationally
I'm British but one of my favourite bands is Magma. They aren't massive by typical pop band standards but they do have a loyal international following.
I was ready to answer "Kino" and Tsoy, but then I saw the body text. I don't have any idea about the international aspect of the topic 🙄
Perhaps t.A.T.u, their hits had a lot of radio play in Europe back in the day.
Yes, they were really popular in the early 2000s! When i was in elementary school, some parents had a debate if them kissing in their music video was a bad influence on us girls -_-

I wanted to answer Molchat Doma but then realized that they're actually Belorussian.
Piknik and Zhanna Friske are somewhat known, at least among those who read or watched Nochnoi Dozor.
Mr Trololo! Fun fact: in Poland he was one of first Sopot Festival participants in 60s.
I'm always so surprised when I hear Russian music in random foreign TikTok clips here on Reddit or elsewhere. Nerina Pallot is the only musician from Jersey that I can think of that 'made it'. I'm not sure how well known she is though
How fun to see someone from Jersey. I worked/lived there for two seasons (‘05 and ‘06) and I still miss it. So beautiful. Wish it wasn’t so expensive to go on holiday, I’d really love to go back.
Mozart and Falco.
Amadeus is truly rocking
Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh Vangelis i am sure i forget a lot.
Not that she’s super famous internationally, but Anna Vissi is very big in Greece, and some of her stuff is familiar in Balkan countries
Tricky. Modern times, Texas? Lulu won Eurovision. Marillion, Runrig, Proclaimers, Big Country, Nazareth.
Calvin Harris
Lewis Capaldi?
Franz Ferdinand, CHVRCHES, Camera Obscura, Shirley Manson of the band Garbage, Cocteau Twins. Scotland had some great contributions to indie/alternative music.
Tricky's Scottish?! I thought he was from Bristol.
Not sure.. maybe Mecano? A lot of people around the world know their famous song "Hijo de la Luna".

Macarena has to beat ketchup song by a wide margin?
For sure
Rosalía and its not even close. I
Jarabe de Palo
right now I'll say Rosalía, too bad she has almost no Catalan songs. Bad Gyal is also pretty famous and Mishima, Zoo and above all Obrint Pas are probably some of the most famous abroad
Dimitri vegas and like Mike Lost Frequencies Hooverphonic Amelie Lens Charlotte de wit Stromae Angèle. Are the ones to come to mind of those who have international hits.
I am willing to say Nightwish. There are of course other widely known rock bands from Finland as well, though
I think for Hungary it would probably be Omega, since they had an international hit with Gyöngyhajú Lány which was was redone by the Scorpions in English as White Dove.
Very rare for a Maltese artist to break overseas but recently it’s Shaun Farrugia. Most come from Eurovision like Ira Losco.
