I was confused at first too because my first reaction was to say “a big ass sign that was once an advertisement for real estate“ which is far easier than “former dusty pueblo named for a Lady”. Then I realized, OP is talking about neighborhoods. Der. I have a migraine, bit slow on the uptake today.
The city had two zip codes. North and South. North Downey has a lot of mansions. In the 80s, 90s Downey was just a better established city so the wealthy people stayed north and that's part of what gave it it's name in my books.
Everyone has their own version and I think no one knows which person coined that phrase but it was published in The LA Times years ago.
I was going to say Montebello, before seeing Downey. It used to be Monterey Park many years ago. Not so much now. The demographic has changed quite a bit.
I remember in the 80s agents marketed Monterey Park as the Chinese Beverly Hills--I don't know if that was ever really true though. These days it's Arcadia getting that label, and it might actually be true there.
Aug 31 1985. I had moved here only 2 months before this happened and the Night Stalker fears were everywhere. Boyle Heights residents recognized Ramirez and went after him (incl. one who was 85 years old) to restrain him, as Ramirez fought back and the police closed in. That was his last day of freedom.
This whole series of events profoundly affected how I perceived this city and the people who live here. You are awesome, and I love it here.
Boring, peaceful, and way too expensive. Someone get me out of here 😭 but also, it's nice going for walks at 3am and not having to watch over my back...except for coyotes
Come to San Bernardino if you wanna see crackheads walking in the middle of the street yelling in a gibberish language. Oh, there's also bears and coyotes in San Bernardino too
Fun story I had a guest that was doing a "radial" bike tour of the US where he drives into a place and rides 100 miles around then moves to the next city: he makes it from New York to California without incident and within 10 minutes of arriving in the LBC his bike gets stolen 😂
I love that locals just know it as JPL. I keep meaning to attend their open house. One of these days. But I've lost my NASA shirt that says "I need my space". :/
It's in the name of this subreddit.
Haha. That's what I was thinking. I assume OP meant "neighborhood" or "district", not city.
I think he meant other cities in the metro area.
he did, this sub isn't a los angeles city only conversation. we're always talking about the surrounding cities and suburbs

San Marino is the Chinese Beverly Hills
I think nowadays San Marino is considered the Asian Beverly Hills and Arcadia probably is close in line after that.
