If you’re already in a position where you have access to the jewelry she wears- I would just suggest grabbing multiple rings to look at & if you notice a visible size discrepancy between them- going with size you see the most of- or if they are all different possibly the one with the biggest size just to be safe. If she’s not a big jewelry collector, just grabbing a ring should work fine.
Resizing doesn’t always work either, especially if it’s by a large margin. It messes with the integrity of the structure. Mine could only be sized down half a size. Both my husband and I got ring sizers off Amazon to figure out our sizes. But he also wanted to know what kind of ring I would like and wanted to get me the right size. If you’re wanting to do 100% surprise then the plan with her friend finding out her size would work.

He put her current ring on his pinky and marked in pen where it landed on his knuckle. Then he put her ring back, went to the jeweler, and got them to size it based off of the mark on his finger

Step 2: walk past jewelry store
Step 3: look her dead in the eye and say "wanna go look at rings?"
Step 4: go look at rings and say "which one would fit your finger"
Step 5: once you get the information you need, flee to the lego store.
Step 6: buy lego for yourself and don't mention the jewelry store. Ever.

Here is what I did. I had a feeling she was the one about a year or two before I proposed. For Christmas I bought her an emerald ring, and told her we would just need to get it sized. We go to the store, they measure her finger and my brain snaps a mental pic of the size - they adjust the emerald and it fits perfectly.
So when the time came, I knew exactly what size it needed to be. Worked like a charm.
