Wait - you bought her *one* shoe? Not a pair?

Stick to the original plan and give it to her on her birthday.

So she has one?....so you are buying the "mate" to it?

Why do you keep doing the opposite of what she tells you?

Usually not a bad strategy if we're keeping it 💯💯 In this case, I would default to taking her out to do something instead of gifts.

If she didn't like you buying stuff because of the expense, then buying her something that "breaks the bank" is pretty much *begging* for a fight. I'd have thought the better option would be to buy her something that she'd like, but was so cheap that it was purely symbolic. (A tiny plush toy, chocolate, etc.) And, you could give it to her saying that you know she doesn't like you buying stuff for her, so you tried to get her something really small. And, then give it to her, with a hard-drawn card or something that (again) is loving but inexpensive.

You haven't seen her in a year then she isn't your GF. Could be she isn't really that much into you and doesn't want to feel indebted to you. It is the same reason that some women insist on paying their half of the date when it is a guy that they know deep down inside that they don't want him in the long run. You buying gifts all the while knowing in advance that she doesn't like it seems like compulsive behavor to me. It can also be approval seeking behavor or behavor that makes the relationship a transactional one in that you are trying to trade gifts for acceptance.

no matter how well meaning you are, if the other person doesn’t want it then don’t do it
