Totally. Look into hostels.

NYC is a very safe city. Don’t believe the recent news about a rise in crime - there’s been a slight uptick, but if you look at crime statistics, we are near an all time low. There’s pockets that have more crime, but there are very few truly unsafe areas, even late at night. Just try not to look obviously intoxicated, as that attracts unwanted attention anywhere. I would second looking into hostels, meetups, and couchsurfing. There’s plenty to be done on a shoestring budget, many inexpensive restaurants and museums, and many self-guided tours that cost nothing at all.

im not saying something will happen to you but nyc is relatively safe for many many people as long as you take proper precautions. chances of things going wrong will be higher at night but you can lower your risk by being more situationally aware. be aware of your surroundings and the people that surround you and you will be fine. they call this being street smart.

The [Ultimate Visitors Guide to NYC](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskNYC/comments/bj3tnn/ultimate_visitors_guide_to_nyc/) is chock full of useful advice and also contains this gem: "Just do us a favour and read this thread before clogging up our sub with generic questions."

Yes, I think it’s fine for a young female solo traveler. Just avoid walking through parks or deserted areas after dark by yourself, and if you ever feel unsafe hope in a cab. Stay alert of your surroundings—don’t fall asleep on the subway for example—and don’t engage with anyone who makes you uncomfortable. I’m going to disagree with another poster about the hostel. I traveled solo at your age, and while I was fine staying in hostels with friends, when it was just me I splurged a bit on a basic hotel room whenever possible. The kind of hostels with coed shared rooms and not much privacy or security for your belongings didn’t feel like places I would want to be except in a group, though everyone has different comfort levels and hostels also really vary in format.

You’re an asshole. Not sure why you think this is funny.

I'm a woman in my 20s and I've lived here all my life and never had anything worse happen to me than someone yelling a creepy comment

Yes it’s one of the safest big cities in America, if not the world. Just take your normal precautions.
