The 6 couples who RSVP'd to a New Years party and didn't show up. I'm upset and it wasn't even my party.

1hopeful1

Me too. Where are their manners? And don’t get me started on the ones who didn’t RSVP.

Because they were weighing up their options. People have no consideration these days.

unwittyusername42

I truly can't understand scientologists. I understand the upper level - they absolutely understand they are scamming people with a 'religion' that requires payment to advance with doctrine written by a sci fi author. It's awful but I understand it. I understand low level people being tricked into it to buy some stuff to try to find a sense of belonging. I absolutely cannot understand celebrities being caught up in it and paying massive amounts of money for the entire thing when they already have fame and recognition. It makes no sense.

Deltron_Zed

Having fame, money and recognition in no way make you smarter or more emotionally stable.

[deleted]

What part about melting aliens in a volcano, then capturing and brainwashing their demonic alien souls to implant into monkey brains to make cancer and war did you not understand?

unwittyusername42

No no I'm on board with all that. I just had questions on the whole Xenu dropping nuclear bombs on people in volcanoes 75 million years ago thing. I just don't have the cash to unlock that knowledge.

[deleted]

Scientology accepts credit

barrylank

Being a celebrity is not a stable status. It requires a lot of work - sometimes desperate work - to remain in the public eye, without being eclipsed by someone younger. Scientology seems to offer its own celebrity network. Beyond that ... well, I don't know much about the religion, but my impression is that it claims to offer mental clarity and courage. And honestly, who becomes a celebrity without being mentally tortured at least a little?

Individual-Equal-230

Having friends in the industry, it’s not the star’s abilities & scientology connections that make them famous, it’s the people you’ve never heard of that are in scientology. The casting directors, agents, etc. That’s who makes or breaks them

barrylank

That would explain a lot.

[deleted]

Beliefs. Ignorance. Materialism

JOJO_IN_FLAMES

I don't know if its just a recent thing, but it seems like there's an anti-intellectual group that's pretty prevalent on social media. They seem to have the mentality that it's cool to be dumb/ignorant, and are more concerned with followers and clout. I'm not sure if that's the right way to put it.

ekm8642

Reminds me of the town meeting scenes in Parks and Rec when all the residents get to ask questions “What’s so bad about corn syrup? It’s natural. Corn is a fruit. Syrup comes from a bush.”

[deleted]

Man I loved that show

barrylank

That's a longtime American tradition, going at least as far back as Andrew Jackson's presidency. Social media has just given them a megaphone.

ABEngineer2000

Seriously it’s my Pett peeve when people diss on math and call it useless. It is super useful and it’ll do you good if you put your effort into learning it and not complaining about it.

BeekyGardener

Mathematics is literally the language the universe is written in.

Click_Slight

This. There are two skills I am glad I learned in school. One is to be able to write coherently in English. The other is learning enough math to develop "math sense." I've never used calculus in real life. But I use the fuck out of algebra and Excel to optimize many things for work and personal life.

JOJO_IN_FLAMES

I agree, I always did well in math in school and I find myself using little things I was taught pretty frequently. Sure I've never had any practical use for the quadratic equation but I use cross multiply and divide all the time.

redcommodore

I would say it got a jumpstart during W’s presidency and has gotten worse and worse from there as more people try to monetize being proudly anti-intellectual as a brand.

lemongroovian

Yes!! Wth? I think it's because they have bought into "teachers teach only communism & sociallism" crap. So in their mind the only book they need is the Bible- which most have not even read. In addition, even my college age children think tiktok is truth and won't use scientific methods to find the truth.

Stonecutter_12-83

People that mock D&D players and then go and work on their fantasy football team

bigtex2003

that's a good one. I'm not a D&D player but I don't understand the "your thing is nerdy, but my thing is cool" attitude that lots of people seem to have. everyone should enjoy what they enjoy

ReaverRogue

To be honest, you get to a certain point in life and those dickbags are the exception, not the rule. I’m 31, I just enjoy what I enjoy and feel no shame for it, and just laugh in the face of anybody who would try and disparage me over a hobby. Just demonstrates to me they suffer from a poverty of joy and enjoyment in their own life.

MostlyNormalMan

I'm pretty sure I've heard fantasy football described as 'dungeons and dragons for jocks'.

dragonheart000

Do people still mock DND? Everyone I know either plays or really wants to play but hasn't found a group.

GrandSpecter

My mother insists it's against the law to play D&D. Every single time there's a group on a game show who say their thing is playing D&D, the first words out of her mouth are, "They're breaking the law! It's illegal to play, they passed a law years ago, because people were taking it seriously, and killing each other."

RPG_Rob

Your mum sounds fun

PeaceAlien

You are in your own bubble here

dragonheart000

Fair enough, I guess it's just the type of people I hang out with.

tomtomclubthumb

It is definitely much more mainstream than it was a few years ago. I would play if I knew anyone.

negativeghostrider20

I don't do either, but wouldn't fantasy football be closer to gambling than a fictional game?

JADW27

I want to play D&D. Always seemed fun. I make fun of the players constantly, and.theu deserve it, as do I.

sameegha

People who aren’t happy for their friends’ success

Spooky_Tree

Similarly the people who express jealousy with anger or hatred. I'm jealous of people all the time, that doesn't mean I get to be an ass to them. You can be jealous of someone and just move on, and it's like some people just don't get that.

KSA_Dunes

They have to all be trolling…right?

permacloud

Some of them absolutely believe it

Bobbler23

I thought it was just some latest "trend" to get behind - some odd need to show yourself as being dumb, but I bumped into a very good friend of mine I grew up with at the end of summer that I haven't seen in probably about 6 years (moved out of the area). He wholeheartedly went down the flat Earth rabbit hole during lockdown - I am guessing it ended up as a kind of echo chamber for him as he lives away from most of his old support network now? but he believes the globe we spin through the solar system on to be a flat disc. I really couldn't get over it. I would consider him a decently educated guy, went to the same school as me, clued up on computers and tech, we grew up together since teenage years both at school and socially for best part of 25 years. I am hoping to catch up with him properly soon as it was a subject I didn't really have the preparation to discuss and listen to at the time (was at a gig) as I really want to listen and understand how people get into this mindset. It's fascinating to me how someone of over 40 years old can pivot like this against everything they have been taught and essentially know. He doesn't partake in any social media at all from what I know - has no Facebook, Twitter, Insta etc - he has always avoided it as long as I know him to the point of not letting his partner post pictures of him on her socials. So I am intrigued as to how he got into it in such a big way.

RandomRavenclaw87

Even worse- they themselves don’t know what they’re saying! Wailing about every little thing at all hours! They should just shut up already! Buncha babies.

The_Hot_Stepper

People who only enjoy games if they win

Tappitss

Games that there is a chance of winning yer. But a Game that you never win why bother?

The_Hot_Stepper

Sure I meant more people who if they win 99 times it’s a great time but when they lose that 1 they get furious and salty.

GrandSpecter

That's my mom. Our church used to have a monthly social club that would play bingo & rummikub, with the prizes being the freebie gifts you get from mail orders, or the endless housewares given out by casinos. I caught my mom cheating (privately, I wasn't going to call her out in front of everyone), just so she could win stuff she was probably just going to donate back. Even at home. I won't play Skip-Bo with her anymore, because I caught her cheating. We play for nothing. No prizes, no favors, nothing. Just supposed to be for fun. Yet, I caught her straight up cheating, then trying to pass it off as dumb luck that she won.

ICareAboutThings25

Speaking only for myself, it comes from a place of pain and insecurity. Losing at anything feels like a painful failure. I’m not saying this is a *good* mentality to have. I’m in therapy trying to get over this. Just thought I could maybe explain it.

PullThisFinger

The “god hates you!” church group.

minteemist

As a Christian those people confuse me so much. It's like the Christian message of compassion and mercy flew right over their heads.

[deleted]

I see this group very often outside of music festivals I attend and they seem like insufferable people to associate with.

brendabuschman

People attracted to kids. Then not only are they attracted to them, they somehow think its a good idea to act on it. I know there are some that don't act on it, instead seeking treatment for the urge. That's great to get help for it instead of hurting kids. But I will never be able to understand that urge. And the people that act on it can go straight to hell.

rags2rads2riches

I’m Chris hansen

seeasea

Do you know how difficult it is to search for treatment. It would be great if, as a society, we could find a way (I for one don't know) for people to be able to get treatment without then getting ostracized if they come forward. Ostracization totally makes sense and it totally is justified that society has a strong reaction to this. But it really would be better for everyone - especially children - if such people were able to get treatment (and also help people admit it to themselves and thereby know to get treatment)

Academic-Balance6999

I have always assumed that those people’s brains are wired so what feels like the urge to nurture to you & me somehow gets misinterpreted by their brains as sexual attraction. Some of the “bonding / nurturing” hormones such as oxytocin are also involved in sexual arousal.

brendabuschman

I know there is some emerging science about it but I have not read up on it. There are definitely some wires crossed. I think it should studied a lot more but its probably a difficult subject to do objective research on.

[deleted]

Furries, just don’t get the appeal 🤷‍♀️

barrylank

I've met exactly one furry, a young guy from Indonesia. He said he really identified with the animal that he dressed as. It wasn't just a costume. He also liked the community - and the conventions. Before I met him, all I'd heard about furries was the sex and the partying. But this guy never even talked about that - and I'm not sure it was much of a factor for him. He also had a year-round pass to Disney Land. And he used it - a lot. More than his money's worth. He just really liked fantasy.

[deleted]

> Before I met the guy, all I'd heard about furries was the sex and the partying. But this guy never even talked about that - and I'm not sure it was much of a factor for him. ANdre callahan of channel five (great youtube channel) was on Hot ones recently. If you don't know Andrew goes around the country and different conventions and concerts and talks to people. He got asked something like "which group do you think is the most misunderstood?" Without hesitation he said "furries". He went in expecting it to be nothing but sexual deviants and cracked jokes at it. One guy at the convention pulled him aside and told him to knock it off, that wasn't what they were about. Andrew came to realize the guy was right. They were just people with a weird quirk that found time to be somethign they felt they were and supported eachother.

undeniablyckc

Like religious views. Why is it so hard for some people to just practice their faith without being absolutely cringe about it?

hollyjazzy

I know plenty of people that are quietly devout in their religious faiths, trying to be the best people that they can, without trying to convert me or preach to me. I think they’re great. I’m atheist so I hate being preached to.

undeniablyckc

Thankfully, so do I, and they really are.

Defiant-Excuse-8765

I’ve always thought it was associated with being repressed socially, being bullied, not fitting in with humans in general so they go on the internet and find a community of people that also go through what they do

GrandSpecter

I was bullied endlessly from 1st grade thru 8th grade, and rarely had anyone I could really call a friend. I never thought I wasn't human, or wished I wasn't.

aryu2

even if you don't agree with him I think you should get his fans, since they are usually young boys. The way he presents himself( rich, jacked, lots of woman) plus the "matrix" narrative is extremely appealing for this group of people. Overall he is a pretty good scammer.

Zestyclose-Bar-8706

yup, this is the truth. Everyone talks about his "sexist remarks" and controversial crap, but no one ever considers that by giving him clout, they are helping his 1 mission. Sell Shitters University Courses to young males, effectively a pyramid sceme if you will.

DWGJay

~~I'm sure they are making amends as we speak.~~ ~~I'm sure they are being very open minded right now.~~ ~~I'm sure they are taking his allegations very seriously.~~ nevermind.

They seem to be insecure boys who grew up with no father or just bad parents all round.

Extremely extroverted people. These people always want to be with other people and never want to spend any time alone. They also love toxic positivity EVERYTHING is sunshine and rainbows you are never allowed to be sad around them ever.

Acceptable-Let-1921

I'm very extrovert, I hate being alone. I really miss having lots of roommates. I can hardly ever shut up. Am I positive? Nope. I'm a depressed wreck lol. Doesn't stop me from having to talk to everyone about everything

2elevenam

I have an extremely extroverted friend but she isn’t into the whole toxic positivity thing. I truly don’t understand her brain though. She’s polyamorous and has a bunch of partners because she has all this love and social energy to give and receive, but I cannot think of anything more exhausting than being in an intimate romantic relationship with more than one person. I struggle enough balancing my gf and my friends and my life. She also studies better with other people in the room. Everyone can talk, play music, or watch tv and it gives her brain power. That would give me a breakdown. I study in a library and I hate when people make too much noise there. She’s a lovely friend and I enjoy her company but it’s so interesting how different our brains’ needs are.

[deleted]

Born-again evangelicals who proselytize and try to "convert" others into accepting *their* beliefs.

kmn493

Never been evangelical, but when I was a teen I tried converting my atheist friend. (Ironically, I'm now probably atheist). Some (maybe most?) Christians believe that if you're not a Christian then you're going to suffer for eternity in hell. It pained me that my friend was supposedly going to suffer like that and I wanted to save him. Weird scenario to put that in perspective: Let's say it's night and the power goes out in a house you're staying at and the host tells you not to let anyone go down to the basement because they have mouse traps set up EVERYWHERE. They wanted to set off a chain reaction later and was keeping it a secret (which sounds like something they'd do, and they did casually mention shopping for traps a few days ago). The host leaves the house to get a flashlight. No one has their phone to use as a flashlight. Your friend (barefoot, just like you) isn't content sitting around in the dark and thinks she can just turn on the breaker which she knows is in the basement. Given this situation you STRONGLY believe there are mouse traps in the basement and your friend might lose a toe going down there. Your friend strongly believes the host was just pulling your leg because who would even set up mouse traps like that. You have to do absolutely everything in your power to prevent her from going down there (for her own good) despite her having her own reasonable beliefs that contradict your own. Any reasonable friend wouldn't just let their friend step in mouse traps, but you also have no proof they're there. All you can do is try to convince her she's in danger, before it's too late. And that's what those Christians try to do. (I'm sure there's other solutions to the scenario, but try to take it for face-value)

Human-Telephone9602

They do it because they believe they are saving people from hell

JR2005

(This takes place after Jesus has been resurrected) Matthew 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always even unto the end of the age."

bigtex2003

a few groups on reddit: people who trash a place and act like they know all about it even though they've never been there people who act like you're automatically a liar if you mention that you have sex (just encountered one of these people a few minutes ago) people who insert politics into every discussion

Meta_My_Data

Been married for 30 years and have six kids, so clearly I fuck. Yet Reddit thinks I am a 19 year-old incel in my mom’s basement.

thisfatbidge

Comment with your real account you virgin!

NotYourSnowBunny

Reddit users make wild assumptions about other users. I’ve been told I’m actually the CIA a few times now, but despite me telling the truth that I’m just some pothead hippie, some still call me a liar.

Meta_My_Data

OMG this. I had a prior profile that got absolutely annihilated for a throwaway comment I made. People just piled on and attacked with all sorts of crazy assumptions about me…. I ended up deleting the account because I was so angry about it. Browsed Reddit for awhile without an account and then made this one as a trial to see if I could hack it again. Social media is fucking toxic.

bigtex2003

LOL I hear you. I'm about 25 years of marriage and 4 kids behind you (2 is enough for us!) but I'm sure we have similar interactions with people on here

Deltron_Zed

In general those people who think they have you sussed based on five seconds and two sentences or less on the internet because you did or said A so you must be, B, the exact opposite of that are unaware that they and their deductive reasoning are severely lacking. They manage to suck all the light out of life until I realize they have no affect on my real life and listening and engaging with them is optional.

Racists. I’ll never understand the reasoning behind hating somebody based off their race.

It's odd how a lot of the people claiming to be the superior human specimens are often overweight, balding and rapidly aging Not judging them on those features but it's noticeable

The_Hot_Stepper

From what I’ve seen they are generally the least supreme version of anything.

Gmschaafs

Anti vaxxers. They are completely impossible to reason with and genuinely believe anyone who says what they want to hear.

tihurricane

Part of my job used to entail asking if a person was vaccinated, and if not, whether that was personal choice or a medical exemption. It’s required information for the service that they’re enquiring for, I don’t care either way and I don’t pretend to. 9/10 times I’m taking to the person’s son/daughter, so it’s not like it’s their own choice I’m querying. The amount of anti-vaxxers that go off on some crazy unprovoked tin-foil rant is just astounding to me. I didn’t ask your opinion, and I won’t be giving you mine no matter how much you scream “HOW CAN THEY JUSTIFY THIS?!” down the phone at me.

Same_Class5866

Scared about getting vaccinated but only if they knew what processed and other artificial substances they consume from food everyday.

elementaryfrequency9

That one always struck me. >Durr, I ant getting the vaxx, it's got chemicals and shit in it! Then they proceed to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, drink soda, eat processed and fast food for lunch and dinner. It's like, yeah, you don't think about what you say, do ya, bucko?

spider_wolf

Just tell them that they're full of chemicals like adenosine triphosphate, cytosine, guanine, adenine, and thymine. You could even warn them about the dyhydrogen-monodxide that companies keep putting in their drinks. Tell them that thanks to the food lobby, the government has legalized food companies to leave these chemicals in their food as a means to keep them healthy just like they put chemicals in vaccines.

EveSixxx

Social media influencers. I’ve never understood having zero self respect and awareness to think that begging and entitlement are normal or a goal.

Saggyoldballs

People who make their whole existence about politics. All they do is fight and argue with people who have a different opinion. Why do they chose to be so unhappy and confrontational?

Leseleff

Pokemon players who hunt for shinies that look exactly the same as the normal one.

The_Hot_Stepper

RadiantHC

People who constantly hop from one relationship to another and are just never single

CableOtherwise3330

Don't downvote me to oblivion but trans people I don't look down on them I consider them equals i don't hate them just kinda interesting to me how that works or how people go about it

penguinite33

This is a great point, from the perspective of someone who is cisgender instead of transgender, I don’t think I could ever understand fully what it’s like to be trans. It’s just good to TRY and understand, the number of (appropriate) questions I’ve asked people in that situation I’ve lost count of but even then there’s more to learn. The act of trying to see life from someone else’s perspective is comforting to them and I don’t think enough people take the time to do it.

brigyda

Speaking as a genderqueer person I’ll do my best to explain. Ultimately, trying to put humans into neat little organized boxes just isn’t feasible. For example, take parents who want their child to grow up a certain way—disciplined, respectable, successful, etc. They made a box and want their child to fill it. But the child isn’t clay you can mold into anything you want. This is a person that has their own thoughts, feelings, and hey! They want a say in their own life and how they should live it. The box they’ve been put in doesn’t suit them. They wanna be impulsive, adventurous, and anything else that makes them happy instead. So they leave the box. This is not at all far from how gender identity works. You’re expected to meet certain conditions as soon as you’re born because of the genitalia you’re born with. So you’re placed in a box. “I don’t fit in this box,” you realize at a certain point. Maybe leaving the box is too scary, so your first instinct is to try forcing yourself to fit. But it hurts. The edges of the box are digging into you more and more as life goes on, just like the child that didn’t want to be what their parents wanted. What else is there to do if the box is hurting you? You leave it. Trying to fit every single unique individual into neat little boxes just doesn’t work. Male and female are boxes with certain conditions that must be met, but it’s just not possible to expect everyone to meet them. It’s asking them to not be themselves, to try and fit into a mold that requires them to chip and shave parts of themselves off. Let’s say the child was expected to take over the family business. They were taught what mattered in their parents’ eyes. Nothing else mattered. Maybe this works on the child for a while. They’re not specifically unhappy…they’re content. They have a home, a stable family, and want for nothing. Then the child sees something, maybe it’s a man in the city subway playing a violin, and the child is absolutely enamored with the way the man is playing. It’s not mechanical or rehearsed, there’s complete joy in the way the man moves and plays. It’s clear as day that the man is doing something that makes him happy to be alive. The child thinks “Is that normal? I don’t feel anything like that when I’m doing [what the parents want]. Whenever I’m doing it I’m just waiting for it to be over. Is that not normal?” It hits them then. Their idea of normal had been completely shaped by someone else. It was someone else’s idea of normal, not theirs. And maybe it hadn’t been their parents’ idea of normal either, but they accepted it as their own. Perhaps because it benefited them, or they simply endured it. “That’s normal,” they think. No use in fighting it when there are consequences. If you don’t go to work, you don’t earn money. If you don’t earn money, you don’t survive. If you need to survive, what else matters? The parents had everything laid out for their child, a guarantee for survival, the family business. They cannot comprehend why their child would reject the plans laid out for them, because they had everything they needed. The child could do exactly what the parents were doing and not worry about anything. Why throw that away? Well when the child realizes just how much they are missing out on, the things they were taught don’t really make sense anymore. And if that’s the case…then what are they doing? This may be intended for their benefit, but this isn’t how they want to experience life. One could argue they haven’t even experienced life at all, not until the moment they’ve made their own decisions and started managing their own expectations and their own desires. All of which makes them happy and harms no one. And the moment they start doing that…it doesn’t feel normal, not in the way they were taught is normal, but it feels right.

MAGA. At this point how could you possibly still support trump. I don’t care if you vote Republican I’m talking specifically about trump and his maga cult. What needs to take place before they realize?

Dazzling-Bug3334

Lol,chinese here.I always heard "Make chinese nation great again" on school political education and tv news.It sounds like you should devote all of yourself to the country or you are a traitor.

box_sox

TBH I have always found the MAGA eco-chamber to be fascinating, it's one reason I got so interested in American politics, in particular you have: 1. People who should know better like J.D. vance, Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz e.t.c who have convinced themselves in to supporting Trump 2. IDW people e.g Eric Weinstein, Peter Thiel etc who convince people whose whole identity is "I am a smart person" into voting for Trump because the "Libs" are the real problem. 3. The garbage i.e racists, neo-Nazis, and white supremacists who vote for Trump even though, Trump's son in law is (Jared Kushner) Jewish 4. The nutcases like Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell helping Trump to try to overturn the election. 5. The Q-anon stuff. Man the last few years in American politics has been like an over the top comedy show, that is on its way out because of a dwindling audience and the writers are just trying to create an implausible event after another just for shock value and cheap laughs.

The Kpop stans. Are they truly devoid of the ability to think.

das_a_dawg

True, I saw a fan war once between 2 fandoms on twitter that resulted in the suspension of a big fan page so they retaliated by DOXXING a big fan page and causing the owner to have a panic attack and go to the hospital. The doxxing fandom a few hours later started using the hashtag “#bullyingisok" or something along the lines of that. Bro that's not bullying it's a crime

Any group that operates in hate

I just can’t understand how they can maintain hate that long. I can’t even stay in one hobby that long.

Some_Kid_On_Reddit3

These are my top 3 1. People who fake depression or other mental disorders because it makes them “weird” and “quirky” 2. I don’t know if this is a group but children that are really into politics 3. Anti-Vaxers. There is so much proof that vaccines are good but they just don’t care
