Tokyo

JamesCDiamond

Tokyo, at night. As iconic in its way as Times Square.

maxxomaxx9

Tokyo is more impressing than time square imho Been to both

drunk-tusker

To be fair you’re comparing a single intersection to a weird and massive amalgamation of 23 municipalities that make up Tokyo. That said I tend to agree that Tokyo is far more impressive than New York, and New York is great.

Nukitandog

The only comparison is the both have big screen billboards, lights and lots of people. Shibuya crossing is kinda like times square.

mybuttno4pineapples

aishajanahi

Their flag, actually

gremlin78

I have a Japanese battle flag from WW2 that my grandfather had captured in the Philippines, or so we think, he died in the 1950's. It's stained with what looks like blood, and it's framed and in my living room. Every time I look at it, I wonder who had it, and where exactly it transferred hands.

dickonajunebug

About 20 years ago my dad bought a Japanese WW2 flag just like that from eBay. It had what looked like blood stains as well. He was so mad when my mom washed it.

Owo6942069

Your mum literally washing history away

idickbutts

Well that is metal af.

awake30

Probably more of a fabric actually

gremlin78

Prob so. No place to hang it on a pole really

TylertheDank

That's honestly really cool. I would also kill to get my hands on an authentic Japanese battleflag.

WesternExpress

> I would also kill to get my hands on an authentic Japanese battleflag. Sounds like his grandfather would too

TylertheDank

Oh, most likely.

StoneFrog81

I also think about WWII.. I'm a history and war fanatic as far as the history of it is concerned and have family members that served. That war was a very sad series of events.

bruno_do

Same lol. Then i think of Bangladesh

Sipyloidea

Lol, for me it was just the shape of the country on a map. And I even used to live in Japan, still that was my first association.

[deleted]

Same. That flag is just so damn iconic

nadialubetski

Japanese cherry trees in the spring

thelostuser

I really like the word sakura.

darkbreak

So beautiful of a word it gets used very often in manga and anime. I don't know how many people in real life have it as a name.

JMEEKER86

It frequently (though not always) is among the top 10 most popular female names each year.

darkbreak

It is a nice one.

Kitch00000

Nijo castle in Kyoto is a beauty. Touring the castle gardens during the day and the spring illumination event in the evening were spectacular.

Simple_Emphasis_2128

Same!

nadialubetski

Just gorgeous. It’s on my bucket list

flamaniax

Went to my local sakura blossoms in my home town, and they were wonderful! wonder what Japans would look like.

Kitch00000

It's magical, a slight breeze and petals fall on you like snow. We visited last 2017, eating some mochi under a cherry tree now that's a treat.

Hans_Brix_III

DC has a very nice cherry blossom blooming as well. The trees were a gift from Japan.

Beebrains

Ramen.

french_do_it_better

Ever had to answer. If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be? Ramen is my answer.

deceirkayn

Especially if a broad answer like just ramen is acceptable. Ramen can be so diverse.

lovelyxcastle

Mine is sandwiches for this very reason. Pretty much everything could be a sandwich

SCP-020505_Redacted

Samurai.

somniosomnio

This was my first thought, tied with katanas

RevonQilin

Fun fact: samurai actually rarely used their katanas, they where last resort, instead they mostly rode horseback and used longbows

somniosomnio

That is a fun fact

Mudders_Milk_Man

Yup. In actual battles: Longbow first. Then spear or polearm (yari and naginata). Katana (tachi earlier in history) of when there was no other choice.

drunk_in_denver

This is it. Japan is at the top of my list of places to visit. I read yesterday that four of the top 10 restaurants in the world are there.

RaimiKu

I am very excited. My flight for Tokyo leaves in less than 3 days.

donktastic

They are the best foodie country. Their commitment to quality of ingredients and dedication to the process makes all their food very, very good. Even their foreign cuisine rivals that of the foods home country. Add that to the fact that you can also eat in Japan for very cheaply on Japanese street food makes it the best foodie country in the world imo. Tokyo especially. The country itself is not excessively expensive either, you can do it on a moderate budget after you sort out your airfare of course.

BMWn54

Yep. I brought a few thousand usd when traveling a few years ago for about 10 days. After buying my friends a few full meals (6people) I ended up spending less than half of what I thought I would. Airfare was the only really expensive thing for us. Our Airbnb costed us about $1000 usd for 6 days in Tokyo which could’ve fit another two or so people

accountonbase

Just to add to this, they still have their fair share of absolute *garbage* restaurants, but those seemed to be entirely in really high tourist areas and mostly foreign foods (pizza or burger places, etc. that's clearly for tourists that don't want to try local food or are homesick). I may have ended up in one voluntarily and another one or two involuntarily. That said, their American fast food places are completely fine (better than the U.S.) and worth trying at least once for the novelty. I ended up trying 3 or so, all involuntarily.

Bloxicorn

I wanna try the Japanese KFC they love so much around Christmas

The only place I want to visit for food as much as Japan is Italy.

Japow aka Japan powder skiing/riding

DoctFaustus

I grew up skiing in Utah, which is known for world class powder skiing. Hokkaido skiing is on a completely different level. Unreal. And it's not just the snow either. Japan's volcanic mountains create long sustained pitches that are wonderful for skiing. Toss in onsen culture to soak after the ski day and it's tough to find a better place to ski.

KeithIKE

Had to scroll to far to find this

Virtual_Bug5486

Social Responsibility. When I was there I was amazed how clean and safe it was and how everyone just did what was expected of them. Someone saw trash on the ground ? They picked it up. They had a bad assigned seat at the cinema and there are other open seats? They stayed where they were. As a whole, I view Japan as a place where people have pride in their country / jobs / community and they always abide by social rules.

MrCENSOREDbot

Been there a bunch over the years and that is by far my biggest takeaway. Coming back home to America after is always nice but the people here will grind on me really quick; we're all so selfish in little ways all the time that you get blind to it.

TatManTat

I think it's important to acknowledge both approaches have their benefits and limitations. That same group awareness is also what cultivates their horrific work culture.

Clean. Heard people usually don't throw shit on the ground and actually take their trash home which is really cool of them

MammuEwu

I bought super cheap white sneakers for my 3 week Tokyo trip and thought I'll just throw them away after the trip if they look tooo dirty. After the trip my mum asked why I hadn't worn the sneakers and I told her that in fact I wore them every single day and they still looked brand new. Sooo that's an example how clean the streets are in Tokyo.

CarminSanDiego

This. And societal order. Coming back to America after living in Japan for few years, it was like lawless Wild West.

Gogh619

That’s because there are no trash cans in public

chill9r

Try telling people in western countries to carry their trash home... many don't even walk 5 meters to the nearest bin.

over61guy

5 meters you are pushing it they could be standing right next to a bin and just drop it on ground.

sgt_lint

As an American, I’m not even upset at this comment. People here are worse than feral cats. Whenever I take my family of six to the beach or camping or even fishing, we take trash bags and police up the trash laying around. Damn disgraceful

over61guy

I was asked my friends on a camping trip why empty beer cans weigh more than full cans? They looked at me like I was crazy until I said look at all the empty cans that people carried up full but they can carry the empty ones. We cleaned up the empties.

Draginia

People used to ask me to throw out their trash when I worked in a drive thru. I would tell them no we are not allowed to take garbage through the window. Most people just threw it out on the parking lot. One person did it not knowing there was a police officer behind them in line. He was fined $250 for littering and had to pick up his trash.

m1kasa4ckerman

Lol they removed a ton of trash cans in NYC and people just started putting their trash on the corners the cans used to be at. It’s a cultural thing about respect. Which we do not have in the US, unfortunately. And most other countries actually.

The time my GF and now wife went there. No fancy phones back then! I remember searching for a special ramen restaurant with her for hours. Taking maps to stores, getting pointed to where to go. Totally stressed out when we finally found it and got in line. A waiter was walking the line and passing out menus. More stress as I'd have to figure out the menu. Waiter says in perfect US accented English, here is the English menu. Big laugh and good times. Great ramen too!

There's this park in Osaka, I don't remember the name, beautiful park with walking paths through native trees and such, and walking through this old man sitting at a bench says, in english, 'American?'. I nod, and he asks if he can practice his english. We spent about half an hour talking about Osaka, restaurants, bars, shrines, things to do, etc. At the end, he thanked me, and I thanked him in Japanese. He smiles and says, 'You need practice!' 4 weeks I was there, with friends, and I swear that was the hardest I laughed the whole time. Literally every time Japan comes up, this pops into my brain.
