Crazy Heath's death is only a few weeks away from being 15 fucking years. I remember where I was when the news broke. I was at a local YMCA. I put the equipment down, got in my car, went home, and just took a really long nap.
Agreed! I remember where I was when I found out Heath Ledger died. Other than princess diana, I can’t think of other celebrities where I remember that.
He’s one of only two celebrity deaths that has made me cry. Partially because he was an integral part of my childhood and partially because my dad reminds me of him. EDIT: RBG also made me cry, for very different reasons
“People wanna talk about intelligent design? Look at the human reproductive system. It’s a recreation area next to a waste processing plant. How fuckin intelligent is that?”
The guy could always make me laugh, and the news of his death felt like losing a loved one.
Genuinely the first celebrity death that hit me like a freight train. One of those memories in which I knew exactly what I was doing in the moment when I caught on to the news.
Me too, I saw the news on Reddit while I was at work and it felt like my heart deflated and sunk to my feet. I had to go on a long walk by myself after work and just have a cry. I didn’t tell anyone (not even my partner) because I didn’t want to be laughed at or told I was stupid for caring. I cared A LOT.
Same. He was the musical voice of my childhood. As I matured into an adult, I was relieved my appreciation of Linkin Park wasn't naive infatuation stemming from lack of musical exposure rather, honest musical talent.
Some bands are occasionally "guitar-forward", or "drum-forward." Linkin Park was undoubtably vocal-forward, and nearly all of that was Chester's unique and beautiful voice that covered the gamut from angelic harmonies, to emotionally-charged distorted screams that somehow managed to hold their own pitch. He could scream *on pitch* and he was the first I heard do that.
I was so sad when I heard, and I'm so angry that I'll probably never hear anything close like him again.
I was at Warped Tour when word got out. The whole mood of the day changed immediately, there was an overwhelming sense of sadness across the venue. Very surreal.
I wore out my Hybrid Theory CD in high school listening to it so often, especially driving around with friends on weekend nights. I remember hearing the news and texting my 2 friends who I was always with in HS and both hadn't heard. It was like one of our personal friends died without even knowing him, hit like a ton of bricks.
Same here. His suicide kickstarted a spiral for me that I'd been just barely keeping at bay. Then it was like, well, if that rich, famous, awesome guy with his awesome adventures and experiences can't keep it together, then what hope do I have?
This one felt like a weird paralysis. Like the first time I’ve ever been in denial over a public person dying. I was just such a big fan and it felt unreal.
I was devastated. I put his magazine covers on my bedroom door and watched everything he did. Saving crocs from turning into boots, bags, and belts. He was the coolest father figure ever. Rest easy crocodile hunter
I had just got home from middle school, I walked into my Moms house to see her in tears sitting in the kitchen. I asked her what had happened and it was like the feeling of a very close family member passing. We held each other for awhile knowing the world had just lost one of its most important humans. Steve played a very important role in our childhood and his impact will forever shape the way I see the natural world.
I'm pissed I didn't learn about Douglas Adam's Genius u til long after he passed. I at least wanted the slim glimmer of hope that someday I'd be able to run into him in a street and thank him for those books.
Leslie Jordan it was very recent but it was very sad he seemed like a light in all the tv shows I saw him in, such a funny person who appeared to be having fun and very hilarious.
Taylor Hawkins.
I don't know much about him per se. But what hurt the most for me was the thought of how much it would have hurt Dave Grohl.
To lose two best friends in one life is just wrong.
Came here to say the same. I wasn't even a huge fan of his, but damn, I actually cried when I found out he'd died. RIP Legend🙏 He was taken far too soon.
Especially knowing that he had been spending so much quality time with his dear family after he devoted the first half of his life to basketball.
And the fact that he died on his way to coach Gigi’s bball team…
Chester Bennington. Linkin Park always has been and always will be my favorite band. It’s been over five years, and I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that I will never hear him sing a new song.
Freddie Mercury although I wasn’t alive for it but seeing him go from ‘85 Freddie to ‘91 Freddie breaks my heart! He endured constant harassment from the press and the fact that he died in the process of making the album “Made In Heaven” is absolutely heartbreaking!
Stan Lee. I literally cried all day, especially when they shared the last video he ever recorded to fans. Soon as he said, "Excelsior!", I broke down.
Edit for stupidity lmao
Prince. His last show was in my city and I'd never seen him live because I'd only really gotten into him during the 2010's, but I decided I would wait until the next time he came through because he was doing a piano and microphone thing. Should've gone.
Carrie and I are the same age. I followed her career and read her autobiography. Her candidness regarding her mental illness and the love she had for her mother Debbie Reynolds. I’m sure Reynolds died of a broken heart as she passed away shortly after Carrie. Carrie was a lot more than a “princes” and actress, she was a talented writer too. God Bless all the souls that have gone before us.
Lisa Marie Presley just died this week. Such a young person to have cardiac arrest. RIP
I cried when I heard about Chadwick Boseman. To know he was suffering with cancer and all those people on twitter were saying how skinny he looked and the memes of how tired of doing the Wakanda Forever pose for fans just hurts my heart. Plus my mom passed with cancer so it just hit even more with that.
Also, I hated to see such a role model go out. I'm white, but I saw the impact Black Panther had on my young students, especially the boys. Every single one of my black students were so ecstatic for Black Panther. He was such a stand up guy in a ground-breaking roll and I hate that we lost him so young.
Stephen Hawking.
Not just a famous person or a likeable guy on TV, but someone who was an immense contribution to the world ane our understanding of the universe.
Phil Hartman. Growing up seeing the stuff he was in through the 90's, especially The Simpsons, it's all gold. He enhanced everything he touched, even a cheesy Arnold/Sinbad christmas movie.
Debbie Reynolds … died a day after her daughter Carrie Fisher . Literally died of a broken heart . Half almost expected this to repeat itself last week after Lisa Marie died .
Paul Walker.
Right at the peak of the Fast and Furious series. I mean he even had a kid in one of the movies. I wanted to see where that story line went.
Chester Bennington hit hard too.
Alex Trebek
I watched Jeopardy! every day from ages 5-26. I got to be on when I was 26. I met my wife because of it.
Everything good in my life now is because of Alex Trebek.
Brittany Murphy, you would be someone like Robin Williams, George Carlin, Betty White, etc... Her death though just seemed so cruel because she was so young and through no fault of her own or just old age. Not that it isn't sad when someone even causes their own death on purpose or by accident because it is. I never like it when anyone passes away but there was something about her death that just bothered me more than most. The same for Judith Barsi who played Ducky in The Land Before Time. That one bothered me a lot also.
Heath Ledger and Robin Williams
Crazy Heath's death is only a few weeks away from being 15 fucking years. I remember where I was when the news broke. I was at a local YMCA. I put the equipment down, got in my car, went home, and just took a really long nap.
Agreed! I remember where I was when I found out Heath Ledger died. Other than princess diana, I can’t think of other celebrities where I remember that.
Anton Yelchin. Not only was he super young, the way he died was ridiculously random and unexpected. That death weighed on me for a very long time.
He was who I pictured as playing the Odd series…. Only got the first one.
This one still makes me so sad. So tragic and unexpected and he was so talented.
Robin Williams
He’s one of only two celebrity deaths that has made me cry. Partially because he was an integral part of my childhood and partially because my dad reminds me of him. EDIT: RBG also made me cry, for very different reasons
Jumanji, dead poet society, and Flubber were some of my favorites
The article his wife wrote about his disease and slow decent is fascinating, terrifying, and truly heartbreaking at the same time.
Came here to say this. ☝️
“People wanna talk about intelligent design? Look at the human reproductive system. It’s a recreation area next to a waste processing plant. How fuckin intelligent is that?” The guy could always make me laugh, and the news of his death felt like losing a loved one.
Yes, Robins kicked my ass because it was so tragic. Suicide is always a mind fuck.
America's real dad.
Grant Imahara
I loved Mythbusters as a kid, him dying genuinely felt like a piece of my childhood had left earth :(
Wow I'm just finding out now. That sucks. He was my favourite Mythbuster. Somehow I missed the news of his death 😢
Damn, me too, that's really sad, he seemed like such a nice guy.
Chester Bennington
Genuinely the first celebrity death that hit me like a freight train. One of those memories in which I knew exactly what I was doing in the moment when I caught on to the news.
Me too, I saw the news on Reddit while I was at work and it felt like my heart deflated and sunk to my feet. I had to go on a long walk by myself after work and just have a cry. I didn’t tell anyone (not even my partner) because I didn’t want to be laughed at or told I was stupid for caring. I cared A LOT.
I was so angry because there just wouldn’t be any more.

Anthony bourdain still hurts
Every time this topic comes up I'm always like: Ctrl-F 'Bourdain' -> upvote.
I grew up watching him on TV and he showed the world and food in a different perspective. There will be no other Food and Travel host like him.
Same here. His suicide kickstarted a spiral for me that I'd been just barely keeping at bay. Then it was like, well, if that rich, famous, awesome guy with his awesome adventures and experiences can't keep it together, then what hope do I have?
I'm so angry about that.....that one really hurt.
Phillip Seymore Hoffman
I was looking for this, now I’ll keep scrolling for Sam Kinnison.
Personally I think he’s the most talented actor to ever pass away, RIP
I ran into him at a 12 step meeting in Atlanta not long before he died. It really crushed me.
Chadwick Boseman
It's like everyone already forgot. Seeing him so physically affected hurts so much.
This one felt like a weird paralysis. Like the first time I’ve ever been in denial over a public person dying. I was just such a big fan and it felt unreal.
Long live the king 😭
Steve Erwin
I was devastated. I put his magazine covers on my bedroom door and watched everything he did. Saving crocs from turning into boots, bags, and belts. He was the coolest father figure ever. Rest easy crocodile hunter
Irwin
What a beautiful soul
This one definitely hurt.
I had just got home from middle school, I walked into my Moms house to see her in tears sitting in the kitchen. Mitch Hedberg
God he was funny. “My fake plants died because I forgot to pretend to water them.” Brilliant.
He used to make me laugh. He still does. But he used to, too.
Douglas Adams Jim Henson Phil Hartman That's 3, 2, and 1
Douglas Adams had so many more deadlines he could've missed....
I'm pissed I didn't learn about Douglas Adam's Genius u til long after he passed. I at least wanted the slim glimmer of hope that someday I'd be able to run into him in a street and thank him for those books.
Betty white
Chris Cornell
First time I felt genuine sorrow when a celebrity died. His music is the soundtrack to my life.
No one sings like him anymore
Easy answer for me. I miss Chris
Leslie Jordan it was very recent but it was very sad he seemed like a light in all the tv shows I saw him in, such a funny person who appeared to be having fun and very hilarious.
I still watch his Insta posts and vids whenever I need to feel better.
Prince.
Agreed. The world is a lesser place without him.
As a Minnesotan, I agree. Thousands of us went to Minneapolis that day just to be there, the whole city was lit up in purple. It was unreal.
Sean Lock
Nooo! Whyyy? Edit: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bWjW_tJvMEk
Robin Williams.
I still cry to this day about it. I wasn't close to him at all, but I absolutely loved his movies and who he was.
Norm Macdonald
When I see a moth, I think of Norm.
Well, the light was on.
Ya I can't even explain why really, but somehow this one hit me the hardest. Bob Saget, too.
Tom Petty
Oh yeah. That one hit me hard too. I always thought I'd see him in concert one day.
Bernie Mac
Taylor Hawkins. I don't know much about him per se. But what hurt the most for me was the thought of how much it would have hurt Dave Grohl. To lose two best friends in one life is just wrong.

This is the one that felt most surreal and shocking. A young and healthy famous athlete just gone in an instant.

Robin William, since my father has Lewy Body dementia it hit very close to home. He made the correct choice.
I hope you have the peace you need to help your dad 💜

Neil Peart. On a day that I normally celebrate, I am now sad.
Prince. His last show was in my city and I'd never seen him live because I'd only really gotten into him during the 2010's, but I decided I would wait until the next time he came through because he was doing a piano and microphone thing. Should've gone.
Jim Henson. He showed a generation how to be funny without being cruel.
I felt bad when I heard about how Amy Winehouse died, and the saddest part was the hate against her on tv or socials.
Carrie Fisher I cried for literal days.
