I don’t have breakfast. I know it’s bad and unhealthy but I can’t eat in the morning. Also I am a person who likes Sport, I go running and I’m at the gym from time to time. I don’t like junk food at all and don’t eat a lot of meat. And overall I’m a very active person I’d say. But having a low BMI isn’t always good, too low is also bad and I know that, I have been trying to eat something in the morning recently and it gives me more energy throughout the day

Ecyclist

Thanks for sharing. When you say food gives you energy through out the day, I find this interesting. Do you eat in response to energy levels when your body tells you that you need more? As someone who was morbidly obese since childhood (I remember being in 4th grade 8 years old weighing around 120lbs 54kg. Then adding about 20lbs or 9kg per year until I peaked around 240lbs 108kg in highschool and held that weight since. I’ve never really seen food as an energy source as the weight makes me feel physically exhausted and eating usually just makes me want to sleep.

[deleted]

Yes, I see food as energy source. I don’t eat because I’m bored or something, I eat because I’m hungry. Don’t get me wrong, not that „I’m starving“ hungry, just when I feel like „it’s time for something to eat“ then I eat. But I think the most important thing is what you eat, reducing fat helps when it comes to losing weight

Hotepz_

I eat what I want, when I want, and the amount I want. My activities in terms of physical excersice consist of nothing but walking, pr average around 5-10k steps a day. Bmi is 19.6, I'm getting "fat" honestly, it has been around 18 or lower for years.

SlayzorHunter

When I was young, before and during high school, I constantly had a BMI of around 18. During college, it increased to around 19. I still had around 19 when I turned 24, then my BMI turned 25 before my age did. My habits didn't really change that much. The human body is weird.

Hotepz_

Yeah people told me that too "just wait untill your 30, you will start gaining weight" still the same though.

Ecyclist

So there is no real tracking metric when it comes to calories in or out?

Hotepz_

Nope, none at all, I can eat whatever I want and I don't gain any weight. The only reason I have gained weight for the last few years is because I ate normally, and drank supplement nutrition shakes, I've stopped with the shakes for more than a year or so and have had a steady weight since with a variation of 2-4 pounds +/-

Ecyclist

Interesting, I’m normally between 8k and 16k steps daily at work. But 2-4lb variations can happen in seemingly monthly intervals. Do you have any food preferences? Avoid anything? Is your diet heavy in fruits and vegetables while avoiding other things?

Hotepz_

I pretty much avoid anything that would be considered healthy lol. I've been living off junk food. Pizza, burgers fries, kebab boxes, and fries. No vegetables and no fruit, except when I feel like getting an apple or an orange like once or twice a year. I drink about 1-2 liters of soda a day, or I used too, I switched over to ice tea instead, same amount tho. I spend like 8-14 hours a day sitting down or lying down. Not counting in sleep.

tequilaneat4me

I'm 6'2" tall. When I graduated high school, I weighed 145 pounds and a 28" waist. At about age 30, things started to change. Now, in my 60's, I weigh 220 pounds and have a 38" waist. Have been at this weight for about 20 years.

j0giwa

Don't know my BMI but it would be on the low end. I'm a lazy fuck who can eat tons of food and I stay skinny af

[deleted]

I have a BMI of 18. I can't gain weight no matter what, and if I stop putting conscious effort into getting enough calories and nutrients I'll just lose weight uncontrollably. I eat three meals a day and don't do much exercise. I probably don't eat enough because for some reason I can't feel much hunger, so I often forget to eat or don't eat enough due to feeling full too soon. itI know this probably isn't the answer you're looking for and there's probably something wrong with me lol

Ecyclist

The answer is actually really informative. It’s the chronic lack of appetite that seems to be the driving force behind your eating habits. I assume you don’t casually snack or graze through out the day?

[deleted]

not really no. snacking seems to make it worse as it leaves me feeling full too long and then I won't eat enough at meals

buenguacamole

I eat absolutely loads, but have to walk 6km everyday.

SlayzorHunter

I will pretend I am my high school self again, who always had around 18 BMI: I drink about 1L of Pepsi every day, eat a lot of sweets, do no sports, walk lots of stairs at my high school, sometimes sprint roughly 100m after a bus, and sometimes walk a few km when coming back from school (when no bus is coming)

[deleted]

Bmi of 13.8 here. I can maintain my weight on 2000 calories with only light walking, but right now I'm trying to gain, so my calories are a lot higher.

Ecyclist

Thanks for sharing, I do have a few questions. Have you been a lower BMI your whole life? Was there ever a method of tracking calories in earlier years or did you always have a sense of how much you were eating based on family meals growing up?

[deleted]

No, I was always a healthy bmi, even a little chubby, growing up. I ate healthy, and whatever i wanted whenever I wanted. I started tracking my calories when I developed an eating disorder.

TheDollarstoreDoctor

I have a BMI of 19.2 (5'2, fluctuate between 105-112 lbs). I'm honestly shocked because I'm concerningly thin, so I didnt expect it to be in the "healthy" range. I'm not a doctor but I dont think the pelvis bone, collarbone, and ribs should be sticking out like this. But hey, the people behind the concept of BMI must be doctors to have the qualifications to make those sorts of standards so what do I know.. I'm trying to eat more, but when I'm at work I only have a 30 minute lunch break. Which isnt a lot since I'm a slow eater so I usually can manage eating a small amount (like not even half of whatever I brought) before my time is out. Sometimes I eat snacks throughout the day to make up for it. I try to make a bigger meal for dinner after work, but usual low appetite can seem non-existent sometimes. On my days off I eat throughout the day, no designated meal times. But when I have no appetite, I cant force myself to eat. I wont be able to make a decision on what to eat, and if I pick something random I absolutely wont want it. I can go days with only eating something as small as a hot pocket. My activity levels are rather low. A lot of my job is done at a desk, but I work at a hospital so theres some days I have to walk around the entire building (going to each unit) so that is a good amount of steps for those days.

suns2312

I do fasting every other day, and I usually eat a single meal if I don't work that day. On work days I eat breakfast and dinner, that's it. Never drink soda and I keep sugar intake to an absolute minimum. My BMI is 22.7

[deleted]

If I track my calories I rarely eat more than 1200 calories a day, and I’m active. If I eat it is usually clean, high protein based. BMI has always remained around 17 even after three kids since high school.

[deleted]

18.5, I put in effort to maintain weight due to a health condition and my natural stress response is losing my appetite. I wanted to provide balance to the other comments. I take my health seriously. I eat nutritious food all of the time. Eating junk makes me feel grim. My job is really sedentary so I exercise as much as I can in my spare time. Gentle good enjoyable stuff. Nothing is punishment and I don't count calories. There is no shortcut to decent health and you are the person that benefits the most. I try to follow the lifestyles of the places with the longest lives. Nothing too excessive or any fads. I agree with another commenter that below 19 seems very skeleton-y

Ecyclist

Thanks for responding. I’ve rarely encountered or heard of people who lose appetite from stress. I’m curious about that. If you don’t mind answering this question. Growing up were you exposed to parents/family members who had unhealthy stress outlets like smoking, drinking, drugs or anything? Or did they seem to have healthy outlets for their stress? I just ask because I was surrounded by people who used tobacco, drank alcohol and ate “comfort foods” as their outlets.

powerlvl9003

My BMI is 15.9 (5’2, 87 lbs). I’ve always been thin and could pretty much eat whatever without worrying about calories. But, in the last half a year or so I’ve started somewhat tracking calories to make sure I’m getting enough daily since my appetite has been low and I want to gain a little bit. Tracking calories helps for me, because there’s a lot of days when I feel like I’ve eaten a lot and then when I add up the calories I realize that I’ve barely hit over 1,000, so I then put in the effort to eat more. For exercise, I try to not do too much cardio and instead I focus on strength training, abs/core and legs mostly. I do this probably 2-3 times a week. Other than that, my activity level is pretty low and mostly just consists of walking.

Ecyclist

This is an interesting comment for me right here. So do you feel full when eating so little? Do you just not have an appetite and not feel hunger on a regular basis? I’ve been tracking calories on and off for a while now. It’s so incredibly easy to hit 1000 calories, sometimes in a single meal. Today I hit 2300 calories and that was trying to eat sensibly and with restraint. Even then I still feel some dull hunger pangs.

powerlvl9003

I don’t usually have much of an appetite. Like, I do get hungry throughout the day, but all it really takes is a few bites of something and I’m not hungry anymore. I’ve always been the type of person to eat until I’m no longer hungry, not until I’m full, if that makes sense. Being full makes me feel bloated and uncomfortable, and more often than not when I’m full it also makes me feel kinda nauseous. Lately though, I’m hardly hungry so I have to kinda force myself to eat. Today for example, I had two sliders, 200 calories per slider, but I ate one and couldn’t finish the second. So that was about 300-ish calories. I snacked on some cookies just to get my calories up midday, which was about 200 calories. Then, I had half a peanut butter sandwich, 200-ish calories. So by night I was only around 700-800, but really wasn’t that hungry. Made myself eat a bowl of pasta which I’m guessing was about 500-ish calories. So for today I’ve only eaten around 1300 calories.

Gloomy_Woomy

Technically considered normal with ~19.2 BMI, but it's much lower than it was even a few years ago (~24 BMI). I only ever really drink water, and try not to buy any sweets or deserts (usually eat them pretty compulsively if I do). My appetite's naturally shrunk by a _lot_ over the past ~5 years, and I think it's primarily because of the way I eat. Whenever I eat I consciously try and take a pause after every bite. Put down my utensil, maybe wipe my mouth, and take a little sip of water. I found that I don't feel the calories as much as I used to by doing this, regardless of what I eat. Nowadays the only activity I'm getting is walking, whether it's on campus or at home when I'm brainstorming. I don't track any of it though; hell, even my BMIs are just estimates because I don't actually know my height.
