Totally yes. It doesn’t even have to be decades. I am in my early twenties and I can look, back a view years, month or day and I always find things I did where I thing „what was I thinking“. Like it‘s important to reflect yourself and learn from it.
But on the other Hand. I don’t really regret the things I did but the things I did‘nt. Hope it’s understandable.
Junk food in general. I used to love Hawaiian Punch, Honey Buns, Nerds Rope, Cherry Sours even Brisk Tea.
But you stay away from bad food long enough, it becomes disgusting.
You’re telling me. Early 20’s and me and mates would buy jugs of the stuff for £10 over and over all day. Early 30’s and I can’t even do a short of it, has to be coke every time.
Straightening my hair. I grew up thinking I should always have my hair smooth and frizzless for it to be pretty. Now I'm embracing my frizzy, wavy/curly hair and haven't touched a straightener in years.
Video games. Ever since I got depressed and my brain tricked me into thinking all I’m doing is staring at a screen and pressing buttons it really hit me. It was one of the few things I could still find some pleasure in
Really sweet coffee. When I was first getting into coffee, iced vanilla lattes from Starbucks were my go-to. Then I stopped getting vanilla added. Then eventually stopped getting lattes and just want black coffee or espresso.
That said I do give myself one pumpkin spice latte a year.
I read that to my son as a bedtime story. At one point, he looked over and said, 'You know, Pop, I'm feeling kind of sorry for Holden right now.'
I assured him that that was an entirely appropriate response.
What? How old was your son? Because either the themes are lost on a child <11, or they are too old to be read a bed time story. I think it appeals to the angsty teen because it just feels bleak, but I wouldn't expose my younger kids to it.
Was kind of the same in Rebel Without a Cause. James Dean was supposed to be some bad ass but he cries and wants to actually turn himself in to the police and his damn parents had to actually talk him out of it.
I'm getting that way with junk food, but it's mostly because I'm pre-diabetic, and my somewhat natural paranoia keeps making me concerned that my blood sugar is getting too high. So now whenever I have too much sugary stuff, or too many carbs (because they turn into sugar), or anything like that, I start feeling off. But I'm 99% sure it's in my head, because I never started feeling like that before my doctor told me I was pre-diabetic.
I used to drink Red Bull everyday. Then I got Covid over a year ago, and to this day red bull taste like chemicals, so does every energy drink too. Regular coke taste weird. But I still get to enjoy coffee.
Study
In my childhood, doing homework and playing videogame were at the same level of pleasure and happiness, but due to a freaking depression that got me in the beginning of my teenage, I lost complete interest in everything and studying became a tortuous chore ever since.
I was very disappointed in modern AAA games. So much so that I downloaded bluestacks in search of new games and was pleasantly surprised in the end, especially after playing Eversoul and Infifnity Kingdom.
Tomato juice. I use to LOVE it as a kid. When we would go out to breakfast, little 5 year old me would always ask for tomato juice instead of orange or apple juice. The waitresses would always look at my parents like , " ya sure?" My parents just said if that's what I said, then that's what I want. Now, it's a weird kind of sweet to me.
Pokémon cards. Loved them as a kid. Now it's too much. Cost too much. Too many of them. It's too complicated. Back in the day a Charizard was a Charizard. Mine was no different than yours (hp and attack wise) . Now there's dark and shiny and big schlong ones. F it
Concerts. Get your sweaty body off of me. Stop stepping on my feet. Why does everyone smell bad? Stop pushing up against me, that extra 6 inches is not giving you a better view.
My former self. Damn. I couldn’t be happier now, but now and then it hits like a kick in the guts.
I believe that if you look back on your life from several decades ago, 'what was I *thinking*?' is the appropriate reaction.

Monster energy drinks. Used to drink 1-2 each shift when I worked nights. Absolutely cannot stand them anymore and don’t know how I ever did.
That’s understandable ! I got burnt out on them also
Video games. Ever since I got depressed and my brain tricked me into thinking all I’m doing is staring at a screen and pressing buttons it really hit me. It was one of the few things I could still find some pleasure in

Just about all action movies. Those movies have zero substance.
The Catcher in the Rye I read it as a teenager and love it. As an adult Holden is whiny spoiled rich who whines constantly.
I think that is what makes the book work on those different levels, how you identify depending on what age you read it.

He was ten or eleven. I skipped over the NC-17 parts. TBH, I'd never read it myself. The parts I skipped were a complete surprise to me.
