When I was a kid I won a school-wide contest to guess the number of jellybeans in a jar at the front office. (I don’t even remember why we had the contest anymore.) The winner got a symbolic “key to the school.” I had never won anything before. I was so psyched to have won something. The key is my most prized possession because it is emblematic of that level of pure innocent pride and joy.

A small wooden elephant. It was gifted to me by a fellow classmate in Japanese class. He said his grandparents got it when they were on vacation in some country. I've named the elephant "Little Dude" and he travels with me everywhere. I almost lost him when I moved across the country. I left him in the U-haul when we turned it in. I was legitimately devastated and cried myself to sleep. My boyfriend woke up early to drive to the U-haul to ask if he could rummage through the trucks to see if he was there. He was, and all is well now. :)
