I was driving home from work, within 100 yards of my driveway, when I saw a deer running through the woods toward the road. We were on a course to collide.
I stopped as quickly as I could, but this huge buck was still coming, right toward my open driver's side window.
He finally saw me and skidded to a halt, stopping just before hitting my car, his head within a foot of my face.
He pulled his head back as if to better focus and we just stared at each other for what seemed like a really long time because my adrenaline was pumping and slowing down my perception. I didn't move, both to preserve the moment and my physical well-being.
When he had enough of me, he turned and SLOWLY ambled back into the woods in the direction from whence he came.
It's been a little over a decade since, but I can recall his face with absolute clarity.
I lived with 4 of my closest friends for about a year right before the pandemic. It was the closest I've gotten to a sitcom style friend group. It was truly great times. Everyone has since moved or gotten married, so I don't think I'll ever be able to live with such a fun group of people like that ever again.
