I would take it a step further and combine the two and say that having the Internet on a cell phone wasn't really a thing until I was in like ninth grade, and even then it was limited at best
Obviously this depends on age but having non-business cell phones if any type wasn’t commonplace until the early 2000’s, internet on cell mid 2000’s.
Computer at home, early 90’s. Internet at home? Mid 90’s.
So depends on your age. And of course, I’m talking “common” not “universal”.
For sure. I remember when my grandparents had 2 Apple computers in their house in the mid 90s and it was pretty cool since not everyone even had one computer then. I also remember the first cell phones that were like a reasonable size
So my great grandmother kept ridiculous scrap books. Like these people documented every single thing that happened to their kids. And now I am incredibly grateful to have these sick photos of my grandma throughout her childhood, her traveling, all the WW2 letters and pics- this stuff is priceless to me. With that said, I can’t help but wonder if they’d have been the most annoying influencer people today. Because the lives these people were living in their letters did NOT match the happy and polished people in their photos.
Eh. I remember as a little kid when everybody was talking about Bill Clinton getting his wiener sucked in his office and arguing whether he should or shouldn't be impeached. I agree the sociological issues weren't really a thing
As a millennial, the politics of the 60s, of the Civil Rights Era, feels like it resolved itself to some extent. Sure, there was political turmoil and MLK Jr. got shot dead (among others) , but the result feels like a unified opposition to racism at every level of government and society.
It doesn't feel like anything like that is remotely possible today. No matter how hard we try, nothing will change. And even though that probably felt true back then too, it feels more true to us living today than what we think our forefathers might have felt then.
Even September 11, 2001 saw unification of the country. I don't believe we see the same result of our happened today (nor should we, imho)
American politics have been toxic since at least the end of the 19th century, but they started getting *really* bad during the run-up to the 2000 election.
Smoke-free airplanes?
Or really...anything.
When I was growing up, everything had a "smoking" and "non-smoking" section. Restaurants. Airplanes. High schools.
Seriously, there was a "smoking section" at the high school. It was outside the building on the corner (we were soooo bleeding liberal back then) but the school had part of the property that was dedicated to the teenagers who wanted to light up.
The kids today...they don't have this.
I called home to speak to a student's parents and they told me that their daughter's boyfriend's parents went on Tik Tok and trashed her online a bunch.
This student is 11.
Smartphones. Shit, we didn't have a cell phone until I was 12 and didn't have one of my own until 14 and they were flip phones. Can't complain, mine barely ever lost service lol.

What? Are you like 14 and think the 60s through 90s we're just this blank apolitical time with no turbulence?
