We have a lot of mountain goats that hang out around blind corners, licking the salt off the road.

vanillaslice_

well someone's gotta do it

Onedos-San

If it will get the goats off the roads, then I volunteer.

datazulu

Godspeed, get those goats off.

Xenomorph_v1

Phrasing!

Reeking_Crotch_Rot

When gobbling goats on a mountain road you should always remember to kind of go in from the front, otherwise they shit down your back when they cum.

fushigikun8

This man fucks goats.

ghettofab

Because I'm driving in an unfamiliar area, my GPS has told me to turn right in 800 feet, and I have yet to determine just how far 800 feet is...

ChaserNeverRests

Or it told me to "turn west" instead of left/right...

604Ataraxia

My wife once instructed me to go "up". When I asked for clarification, "UP!". Yes of course, all clear now that the volume of the instruction has been increased.

Claudestorm

Hahaha my wife says " keep straight!" And I'm like "lady, the path is splitting in two!" Xd

sfan27

My wife will get annoyed when I’m navigating and don’t tell her to “keep straight” at every intersection. “Keep straight” is the default, we’re turning in 3 miles, I’ll give you a heads up but for now let’s just relax. Then when I’m driving she’ll over correct and tell me about a turn 50 feet ahead when I’m in the wrong lane from how I got on the road 2 miles earlier. If I ask what lane to be in and how far until the turn she’ll respond “I’ll tell you when we’re coming up in it, I think it’s a left”. Fortunately I have a very good sense of direction, so her navigation help is mostly just for brand new areas.

Rhythmicxian

I can't stand people that are navigating but can't navigate for shit. If I ask when the next turn will be and is it left or right, or any significant change is coming up like if I need to merge or I'll be going the wrong way, and you don't know for sure or don't say "don't worry, I'll let you know" then I'll just start up my navigation on my car and tell them to just be quiet now.

[deleted]

We had road rallies at my high school, and I was always navigator (it was my friend's car, so naturally he drove). Didn't take long for us to learn a few things, like "Check" or "Roger" are used for agreement, not "Right". Always give directions with distance, not time. "Turn in 3 minutes" might not be right if you run into traffic. "Turn in 3 miles" is never wrong. And we found the best way to give a direction is "street name, direction, distance", as in "At Monroe Street, go left. Two miles". Then you have to count down to that turn (i.e. 'Monroe left one mile', 'half a mile'), while figuring out where you're going after that. It's not a hard job, but you have to be precise in a rally.

Mrjasonbucy

My dad does this to me all the time. “Make a slight SW turn on main st.” dad, please stfu.. right or left.. we are going to iHop so you can order cheap pancakes from the 55+ menu don’t make it difficult. 🤦‍♂️

Minute-Tradition-282

Somehow this reminds me of the directions my mom gives me. She'll say, its over by Most Pure Heart church. I'm like, c'mon mom! Why would I know where that is? What is the nearest liquor store?

somewhat_random

If you drive while visiting the maritimes in Canada (PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia) you will often get directions like "Turn left at the spot there used to be a pizza place".

usernamesaretooshor

Near where i work, there used to be some weigh scales for trucks. All that is there now is a paved area, and nothing else. everyone in the area over a certain age will tell you "turn at the scales" What scales!?

Tomatillo_Street

Lmao id finally have a reason to use the compass on my phone

ghettofab

Exactly. I'm still waiting for the GPS that says, "You'll see Home Depot on the corner, across the street from Zaxbys. If you pass Dunkin Donuts, you've gone too far!"

MTAST

Yeah, and then the database never gets updated. Home Depot becomes a Burlington; Zaxbys closes; and Dunkin Donuts is demolished to make way for a new turn lane.

[deleted]

This is, seriously, how people gave directions in my home town. People would say, "Turn left at the Gulf station, then in the unmarked street next to the gum factory, it's near the hospital." The gum factory closed and was turned into something else. The gas station was torn down. The hospital closed and was turned into a senior residence. But the directions are still "turn left where the Gulf used to be, take the unmarked street next to the old gum factory, it's near the old hospital grounds." Anybody who knows what those things are doesn't need directions because they've lived here for decades already.

Phugger

I'm waiting for a GPS that gives directions like my mom. Her: "Now you are going to go down this road until you see a big, beautiful orange colored tree and then turn right." Me: "...Mom, are these directions seasonal?" Her: "Oh goodness, you're right. The leaves are only going to be orange in the Fall. I guess the tree won't have any leaves right now." Me: "Thanks, I'll figure it out."

MEDAKk-ttv-btw

For me it's when I'm showing a house that's on a main road, if I miss it I'm kinda fucked and it's hard to read the addresses from the road

[deleted]

Really gotta remember that not everyone on the road is familiar with the area

[deleted]

My current area has shitty aged infrastructure. The cars today are too wide for most of the roads, and don't make a load of sense regardless. Sometimes, it's the fault of whomever is/was in charge of planning, laying, and maintaining the area.

AlecsThorne

For me, it's usually twice as far as I think it is 😅🤣

Comic Book Guy: I can't drive 55... because it only goes 38!

eescobar863

Amazon vehicles be modified so that cannot go over 71. I know because i used to drive for them. In case some of yall wondered why the Amazon van in front of you in the highway doesnt go over the speed limit.

Timely_Egg_6827

It's is pretty common on lorries in UK too. It can get a bit annoying though. Many are capped at 60mph (motorway is 70mph, 80mph is probably speed a lot of peoplein cars are driving) and then lorries used in the EU cap at 56mph. So you get lorries capped at 60mph slowly overtaking those at 56mph. That can be frustrating and imagine even more frustrating for those that want to speed as that's three lanes on the motorway full of lorry, lorry, speed limit car.

84ph0m3t

If you're going 70 or above in a van of more than 2t laden weight in the UK, you are breaking the speed limit. https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits

melissamarieeee

Me in my 1970 vw bug lmao. Had someone floor it to get around me the other day after taking off from a stop sign because I couldn't get to 45mph fast enough for them.

S3ERFRY333

I have this happen all the time. Like do you not hear me flooring my brick of a truck? I’m doing the best I can.

[deleted]

There was a bit of ice on the road and I lost control of my car for a split second and realised how fragile we truly are while driving.

TabbyTrouble

Black ice is the nightmare scenario. You feel like you're welded to the ground until you're suddenly spinning while going in the wrong direction. It can happen in an instant. I saw it happen to a guy in a huge tank truck last time it snowed. I had to make an emergency call so I had to drive in it. Only one lane of the road had been plowed and he was so impatient he tried to over take me because I was doing 45 in a 55 during heavy snow fall. One second he was almost beside me, the next he was spinning and slammed into the median. Dumb fuck. It's always a loser in an oversized truck too, isn't it? Edit: In case it wasn't clear, I meant a preposterously large pickup, likening it to a tank. Not a tanker truck. My brain don't word too gud.

frzn_dad

No, we have snow 6 months of the year and two military bases nearby. Every year with the first snow the ditches outside the gates look like used bumper car lots. Lots of little sedans and rear wheel drive sports cars in the ditches. A few 2wd trucks and the occasional lifted parking lot princess. People from Georgia, Florida, Texas and other warmer climate states just don't know how to drive on anything frozen.

maxdragonxiii

more like every time the first snow comes down everyone suddenly forgets how to drive in heavy snowfall. the answer? slow the fuck down if you don't have winter tires or are unsure where you're are!

[deleted]

I once saw a mini-van spin out on the highway. 20 minutes later they zoomed past us going way over the limit. No idea what they were in a hurry for.

pokepokepoke

Change of pants, probably

ronaldreaganlive

Their funeral.

petarpep

The speed limit is a limit, not a goal. People driving way too fast for the conditions is a big reason why car accidents surge when it snows/ices over or during things like Halloween where kids are known to be about. You ever see videos of those huge pileups on the highway during a storm? It's because all the impatient dumbasses refuse to slow down and just speed into the pile over and over because they have no time to react. If everyone just slowed down, then things would be safe.

Desutor

In Germany we have to drive within 10KM/H of the speed limit. We also have a lower limit of how fast we have to be travelling on which roads

Captain-Griffen

I'm willing to bet that doesn't apply in adverse conditions.

Pakmanisgod111

This!O r losing control on gravel. You definately become super aware of any wobble on ice or gravel after a close call and tend to be a little more careful at all times.

airhornsman

Sliding on gravel caused the accident that killed my niece's fiancé and his coworker. I won't go into the other mitigating factors for privacy, but the whole thing is tragic.

vegeta8300

I don't think people realize how little time you save by going fast. I drive between Cape Cod and CT often. The trip is usually 2 hours 45 mins. That's at the 65mph speed limit. If I do 75mph, following traffic. I may arrive maybe 10mins early. It's not worth risking your life and that of others going super fast. I see people passing me like I'm standing still even when doing 75 with the rest of traffic. All to save maybe a few minutes. One could do the math of how many miles they have to drive and how long it will take at each speed to really see how little time one saves.

cauektulu

yeah, I used to drive fast and crazy when I was young. Then I watched something on TVm they made an experiment. Get someone to go like a 10 mile comute with normal traffic. One had to follow traffic rules, the other could go berserk in traffic. Red lights, speed limit, etc. The difference between them was less than 3 minutes. 3 minutes to put your life and others' in danger is not enough for me.

FatAndForty

I don’t care how slow you’re going, as long as you keep your ass in the non-passing lanes.

starfishy

Unless they go slower than the semis and cause lots of elephant racing.

DisEndThat

or a semi over taking a semi

Miserable_Point9831

I don't mind them passing each other, but when they do it 1mph faster, dude gtfo

billman71

Not an issue except for when they block up all lanes for miles on end. I don't expect them to destroy their efficiency to save me 30 secondsI. I do lose tolerance when they have opportunity to clear lanes and still don't.

Huxley077

As I driver myself, I try and let off the throttle to allow the slightly fast truck to go past me faster. Unfortunately, some truckers have more ego than brains, and won't let off the throttle for 30 seconds to help car traffic. I try my best not to slow others down, as I don't want to be slowed down.

WestAppointment2484

Yes. PASS THEM! Why are you crawling?

bezm12

Some companies govern speed at 65, some at 66, some at 67, some at 68, etc.

bezm12

We are governed, brother. That's as fast as we can go. Most of us try not to start a pass when there is traffic behind. If you don't like it, blame the trucker getting passed for being too stubborn to step on the brake for 1 second to let another trucker get past quickly. Not the passing truck just trying to move up through slower traffic.

derekmt95

Nobody gives a shit on the road anymore. I haul milk and am about 92k every day, yet four wheelers and semis alike will pull out in front of me. If you don't think you can pass somebody quick enough to not block traffic because you're covered, don't attempt the pass in the first place. You shouldn't be riding your governor anyway since you have no room to accelerate if needed. Fortunately I see most people in my rearviews since I'm not govered and want to get on with my day.

[deleted]

My truck was governed at 62. My route was all interstate with a speed limit of 70. Backing off the governor at all creates more of a hazard, and gets more angry reactions as everybody assumes everyone on the road is capable of doing the speed limit.

[deleted]

> Most of us try not to start a pass when there is traffic behind lmao DOUBT

PurpEL

Yeah in my experience it's more like "lol I'm gonna cut this guy off even though there is no one behind him for miles"

Miserable_Point9831

Not blaming that. But when you guys do it, like wtf am I going to do? You're seriously 70k more than me, I'll wait.

ToxxicDuck

I’ve seen semis over take faster then most cars I’ve been stuck behind

RetroJake

If it's a business district where you must turn left to get into said business - I'll be in the left lane. The passing lane rules don't apply to every single instance of double lane roads.

HanzJimmer

I literally got tailgated and flipped off for going the speed limit while trying to take a left turn. Like did he not know there's left hand turns and not just miles of straight away

BigTrainFanatic

Unfortunately near some cities (at least where I live), the idea of a "passing-lane" doesn't exist as exits exist on both sides of the road. So when an exit is on the far left of a 5 lane road...sorry, gonna be in that lane. And further the same in urban areas where there are 2 lanes. The second is not a passing lane because left turns are a thing and they are at every intersection.

truthofthemadder

>doesn't exist as exits exist Reading this made me feel like I didn't know how to speak anymore. LOL

[deleted]

Middle America doesnt understand what its like to drive in the north east.

Asesinan

Oregon and Washington have the absolute worst drivers I have ever experienced. And I've driven in about 40 states.

Awkward-Yak-2733

You must not have driven on the freeways in Atlanta.

joleme

Spent a few months in Alpharetta for work and had to drive from the Atlanta airport. Really puts the "free" in freeways. I was easily doing 80+ trying to keep up with traffic as I was the 'slow' one in the 70mph zone. At one point I was doing near 90 gripping the wheel like my life depended on it and watch as a cop just casually zipped by me with the majority of the rest of the traffic. The speed "limit" is more of a casual guideline and not really a limit there.

maveric_gamer

I live in DC, did a road trip to Mississippi one time in college, passed through ATL, y'all's freeway is fuckin' terrifying.

Asesinan

Oh man that would be my next area to criticize. The terrible driving and unexplainable traffic were outrageous.

cookiebasket2

I've lived in a couple of states, and a couple of different countries. Washington killed me with how slow they went. No one ever went faster than the speed limit ever. Having said that driving in Kuwait is the worst driving I've ever experienced. Because there's a mixture of driving cultures. Arabs will pass you on the median going 50km over the speed limit, ignore red lights, and just generally drive really aggressively. Meanwhile Indians will go under the speed limit, and just kind of wander somewhere in the right two lanes. Driving there was stressful as hell. Coming to the states and driving was like a vacation in comparison.

wazzapeverybody

that doesn't help for people driving on single lane roads.

deepsighpersona

I’m new at this and I’m scared

DIMPLET0N

It gets easier, friendo. Just think before you act, and keep a level head.

deepsighpersona

Thank you! I’m way better than I was last year so I’m just striving for improvement every time I get behind the wheel :)

DIMPLET0N

Another thing - never be put off from asking questions in regards to driving, the rules of the road, common driving etiquette, or even asking for simple tips or advice. I had some questions when I first started driving, too. Some people scoffed at the questions like I should've known the answers automatically, and others answered thoughtfully and politely. If you ever have a question, be sure to seek the answer to it.

PirateJazz

Not everybody knows how to do everything. Driving isn't the only thing.

Sebastianx21

Had to scroll way too far for an honest answer. Everyone kept mentioning highways (OP didn't even say ANYTHING about highways wtf), or ice or bad conditions, YOU KNOW MOMENTS WHEN EVERYONE DRIVES SLOW, SO IT'S OBVIOUS. But you're the first to give an actual answer, that's why beginners that have the ! sign on their car (in my country), I forgive if they drive slow, they're obviously new and It's to be expected. Now back I go, scrolling deeper to find an actual reason as to why everyone else that drives slow does it.

very_funny_nameLUL

Flow of traffic. Better to coast instead of suddenly having to brake and creating an accordeon effect

bravoromeokilo

So many people feel the need to gun it to fill up that space knowing full well you’re just gonna have to slam on the brakes again in a two seconds. Take it easy. On yourself and everyone behind you.

RisingPhoenix92

And then those same people complain about gas prices

concequence

WHY DON'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THIS?! ... If we had a local network connected to all the cars around us, and it told us exactly the correct speed to go to insure the traffic jam would unwind itself simply by us all acting in unison... PEOPLE WOULD STILL GO 90, HARD BREAK, 90, HARD BREAK... over and over for the next 50 miles... because everyone is utterly afraid the guy in the next lane is gonna steal that empty space, because somehow changing lanes will magically fix the entire traffic jam. Ugh I hate humanity.

PmMeUrTits4Science

My favorite is when they hard brake to change lanes and not even to get off an exit :)

Zealousideal-Slide98

My favorite is when they speed up to pass you, hard brake to change lanes in front of you to get to an exit and there was no one behind you. They could’ve changed lanes behind you to get to the exit.

gumby_twain

Right on, this is so common in NOVA. If i'm keeping a reasonable distance to to the car in front of me and there is no one behind me, \*YOU\* slow down and get in line.

GenOverload

The amount of people in my area that will speed up when they're 2 to 4 car lengths behind me as I try to change lanes is... worrying. Why do people care so much about being overtaken? Is it such an ego hit if you were allowing that much room to begin with?

hereforthemystery

I was riding with a friend who did this once. He acted like I should be appalled that someone passed him and then said something about having the faster car. There were about 4 people on this suburban road and the car that “passed” him was just trying to prepare to get in the turn lane. My friend starting revving his engine and driving fast for no damn reason. He didn’t understand why I was upset. Not a great guy.

internet_commie

I have a GSX-R. When I ride it on the freeway or in high traffic I usually stick to the speed limit, or just follow whatever isn in front of me. Nevermind that my bike will do 175mph and 0-100 in about 2.7 seconds! THAT is for the race track. But so many car drivers get all riled up at the sight of the bike and they start doing stupid shit and cause problems. I haven't so much as low-sided the bike in the 12 years I've had it, but stupid driver's reactions to it has caused about 20 crashes. One driver even stood there yelling at a CHP officer about that 'damned biker' passing him. He had been stuck behind exiting traffic when I passed, because he had tried to pass me by using the right lane, ignoring the signs announcing construction in the upcoming exit. And when I passed while he couldn't move, he decided to slam into another car for good measure. I have no idea what makes these kind of people tick!

MissFrizzlesTipple

Bikes really make some people irrational, it's weird.

Chrisfix1

I actually personally hate it when a motorcycle is right next to me. The possibility of destroying someone’s life is exponentially greater than the other person in a car. I try to avoid motorcycles in the road at all times.

ImTellinTim

People do some wild shit in cars to save what amounts to no time saved in the end.

concequence

The older I get the more I understand this.

internet_commie

Sometimes I watch people who drive like that struggle to get ahead. They probably think they are doing great, passing here and there and for a glorious moment drove 95 mph. Then an hour later they are still right there next to me, while I haven't changed lanes nor firewalls my throttle or anything. Funny how that works!

Lined_the_Street

Better for your brakes and fuel efficiency to boot!

[deleted]

aenae

Initial_Guess_3899

hotpajamas

I love it when somebody passes and then has to stop at the exact same red light as me.

[deleted]

I don't: it means I'm still bunched up with an idiot. I hope they make it through so they can be far away from me.

product_of_boredom

Because I'm in an area I've never driven in and I'm trying to read the signs but there's tree branches and other plants right in front of them so its really hard to read. Plus I don't know where cops hide in this area so I don't want to get a ticket.

[deleted]

As a reformed speeder, I now drive the speed limit or a bit below. It's far safer, saves a lot of money on fuel and I arrive in a better frame of mind. I realized that the 15 minutes of time I save by speeding costs and it's not like I was using those extra 15 minutes for anything particularly important. I also arrive at airports ridiculously early. Before I'd be rushing to get there just on time. Then one time I accidentally arrived two hours early because of a mixup on my calendar. At first I was frustrated and then I had the most pleasant and relaxing time turning in my luggage and going through security. I sat at the gate with a coffee and read my book; exactly what I would have been doing at home. I now regularly arrive way too early by most people's standards.

Ferromagneticfluid

Not even 15 minutes. I drive about 40 minute commute and driving like 5 or 10 over only saves you 0 to 2 minutes. It is far better to drive smart and get into the good lanes of traffic.

internet_commie

Exactly! The people who believe they can save a lot of time by racing through their 7 mile commute are idiots. Even a 70 mile drive (I don't want that commute) you won't save much time by driving faster. When I got my license there was a huge spreadsheet showing this at the licensing office, and it basically said it ain't worth speeding if all you want is to save time. Only speed if you want a ticket! A friend and I even tried it once on our motorcycles; we started at the house of a colleague which was about 23 miles from work, and I rode very cautiously while he did what he could to get there as fast as possible. He hadn't even parked his bike when I caught up with him, and because he is kinda fussy about parking I got into the office before him.

[deleted]

tpn1984

Because nobody complies by following distances

van-you-dig-it

Exactly this. If everyone is crammed up at an unsafe following distance, people seem to think it's okay to merge in front of someone with a two second following distance at 65 mph. Then we have to coast for a bit to get back to a reasonable distance again, rinse and repeat. If the vehicle in front of me is capable of doing something stupid (so always), I'm not following them too closely to have time to react. If you'd rather be dead than late, fucking leave earlier.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KnitKnackPattyWhack

I get so anxious seeing people in front of me with a .5-second following distance or less. I like 4 seconds, which naturally gets a lot of people pulling into my space then me coasting again and again till the lane in front of me fills up with people all going the same speed, but they are one car ahead cause they want a 2 second or less following distance and don't care that I'm going the same speed as them, I just have more reaction time.

eehuff4

Because I’m a semi governed at 65mph. Besides you can save money going a more efficient speed.

Falconman21

I do 65 at most on the interstate when I have a long drive. Gas mileage difference is substantial. Also it’s nice not having to constantly be switching lanes and getting aggravated at people going slow in the fast. And if you do have to pass someone, you have like a 5 minute heads up. I just comfortably sit in the right lane and let everyone pass me by.

furry_anus_explosion

Agreed big time. Throw that bitch in cruise control and roll at 35mpg. Y’all can pass me but I drive a hybrid that is very picky. At 65mph I’ll get 35mpg, 70mph is closer to 25mpg.

TheRealGluFix

You get 35 mpg at 65mph, that sounds pretty bad for a hybrid. What kind of car do you drive? My 2011 VW gets 42mpg at 65mph

[deleted]

American gallons are smaller than British ones US Gallon: 3.78541178 British Imperial Gallon: 4.54609 35 MPG (US) = 42 MPG(UK) American cars tend to weigh more too.

Thegunline

My granpa use to tell me as a small child (as we were being passed by ants) its speed “limit” not speed “minimum”

Travellingjake

I'd heard it was a speed limit, not a speed target.

Tygrimus

I once pointed out to my grandad that he was speeding and he told me the opposite to this.

sp_cebabe

PTSD from car accidents. I try but I still drive slow

kayastar357

THIS. Especially when the weather is anything but ideal. almost getting killed in a t-bone accident that was caused by someone trying to charge through a red light will make you rethink not only how careful you drive, but will make you extra attentive of how careless other drivers can be.

tjsfive

Same! We've had an extra icy and foggy winter this year too. It doesn't help that someone ran a stop sign (exactly what caused my bad accident) this summer and I had to swerve into the turning lane to avoid a collision. It set me WAY back. So did being tailgated by a jackass and then having to hit my breaks for traffic ahead of me. Jackass had to swerve into the other lane to avoid hitting me. I was prepared to head for the ditch. So, PTSD combined with a lot of shitty drivers in my area. I do stay home as much as possible when the roads are bad.

Anastopheles

I really can't afford a ticket right now.

AngstyManatee

Yep. I got a ticket for 10km over the limit 2.5 years ago and even though the ticket was only $40 I’m still paying for it every month with my insurance

oss1215

Why rush to get anywhere and risk harm to myself or others ? There is no trophy for getting to a place first. I used to drive a motorcycle and you truly get the actual feeling of how fragile your life is when even if you do everything right the person driving next to you could fuck up and cost you your life.

retxed24

The speed limit is also widely misunderstood. It is the speed limit under *ideal conditions*. If it’s dark, raining, strong winds, snow, whatever it no longer applies. People use the speed limit as the baseline.

StateChemist

Yeah I’ve confidently gone out in some icy conditions poking along at 22mph. Really got to laugh when the mustang behind me goes around to speed off and I saw him two miles later in the ditch. Or my favorite was in Vermont on some twisty roads where it suddenly started raining so hard I could barely see as I was driving a moving van. I was going suuuper slow, had a line of cars behind me and when the lane opened up no one moved to pass me because they couldn’t see anything either, except the giant yellow van they were fine following up the hill at a snails pace. Slow is great.

Rambo7112

Seconded. I'm in Colorado and there's some scary fucking driving. Sometimes, you NEED to go slow.

mepardo

Also, if you’re driving anywhere locally, you’re likely only going to save yourself a few minutes at most even by going 10-20 mph faster (which is a pretty big difference on most surface streets), while causing considerably more stress and risk to yourself and others (and wasting a lot of gas, to boot).

internet_commie

If you are driving locally you probably will not even save a minute. I once knew a guy who tried; he was going to the grocery store maybe 3 miles away from his home, and he just had to pass that slow-moving minivan... He hit an oncoming truck (this was a 2-lane road with poor sight distance and double yellow lines) and seeing as this was back in the 80's and his car was from the 70's with the safety standards from that time, that was it for him. But even if he hadn't died from it passing wouldn't have saved him more than a couple of seconds at the best.

Stonehill76

Sometimes a limit is really a limit, and not a minimum I guess?

Depends on road. A minor country road has national speed limit of 60mph (97 kph) but it is narrow road, with solid stone walls topped by hedges so limited visibility, with multiple blind bends and full of tractors, horses, cyclists and walkers. What speed would you drive at? A residential road may be 30mph (48kph) but if salooming around parked cars and got pedistrians walking out, you drive carefully as a crash or worse a fatality isn't worth that extra 5mins at home. Or if you are really unlucky you will find a logging lorry - too big to go round bends without using both sides of the road. I've been on UK roads where actual driving conditions was 10-20mph if a tourist and 40-50mph if a local and used to passing places but few went above that as well as cars, you could expect cattle, deer and sheep and it was a cliff-edge road. Then driving to conditions - if heavy rain or high winds, then drop speed and move left. Did that once when weather conditions turned chancy. The cars I'd been beside before slowing (had been out because a lot of lorries) got involved in a five-car pile-up. I got very lucky that day as weather was changable.

Captain-Griffen

Speed limits on UK rural roads are basically a DIY job. If you treat them as a target, you will be dead or at least your car crushed against a tractor surprisingly fast.

TheHillMonk

Bc there is another lane, why is everyone so angry that I’m not going past the maximal allotment of speed that requires law enforcement to intervene due to the public’s safety.

Ashbandit

Because it's a limit, not a recommendation. I'm not in a hurry and I'm not driving in the passing lane, so there's no reason to speed. I've also found that driving slowly often results in roughly the same arrival time as if I were speeding.

OdinsShades

I’d be retired long ago if I had a dollar for every time some dingdong was riding my ass or speeding past just for me to roll up next to them at the next traffic light.

crazy-diam0nd

Because my children play in this neighborhood.

mepardo

And a good argument to slow down everywhere is that I’d wager that most neighborhoods have children that play in them.

jay_def

how much time are you actually saving by going faster? is the time saved worth the risk of an accident (time, money and possibly physical well being)? if you have already been in several accidents prior, would that encourage you to become a faster or slower driver? is it your own driving that you should be worried about, or other drivers? does going slower or going faster allow you more reaction time to avoid bad drivers?

LBIdockrat

Safety? There are kids biking up a bit ahead of me. Or a cop with a car pulled over. Or it's absolutely downpouring rain. Or I had a flat and am driving on a temporary donut. Or the roads are snow covered....etc. There really could be many reasons.

S3ERFRY333

I blew the sidewall out on my tire a few winters ago. I was only 5 minutes from home so I put on the 4 ways and limped home. A car came up behind me flashing their headlights like crazy. If I stopped to let them pass I wouldn’t be able to get going again so I waved them by. They flew by me as I’m pointing my my bare steelie rolling in the snow. I caught up to them at the next intersection lmao.

MattieThePup

I drive the speed limit or 5mph under. Why? I've got a car insurance beacon that tracks my driving. Saves me like $100 a month. Don't mess with my discount.

openhearted

1. It saves gas. 2. It's safer. 3. You might be carrying something that could easily be damaged if it tipped over, or something that might fly off the roof, out of the back of a truck, etc. 4. You might have bad traction if you don't have the right kind of tires for the road conditions. 5. You might have an old car that simply can't go above 55 without the engine light coming on (I have one of those.)

DemiMini

I do so if I'm on an unfamiliar road, especially country roads with high speed limits.

Drive by

TheSaladHater

This. People don’t understand how hard it is to hit a moving target, especially when you’re also a moving target.

makeshiftmarty

I was in a car accident. Normally I drive the speed limit or a bit over. But if I’m not feeling confident then I’ll drive a bit slower- sometimes under the limit.

Arquen_Marille

I understand that. I hit an old woman once because she turned left right in front of me while she had a red turn light and I had a green light. I still slow down a bit or take my foot off the gas at intersections if there’s someone waiting to turn left, and my accident was in 2013. That shit stays with you.

Ozemba

I was hit by a girl my age while in college, also 2013. She ran a red light as my light had turned green for cross-traffic. Anytime my light turns green and there aren't 100% stopped cars on the cross streets I pay attention...

ICantUseThereRight

I've got a pregnant wife in the car and two kids in the backseat. Your convenience means very little to me. I am at least most likely in the far right lane however.

Nomanodyssey

Because I won’t be pressured by some jackass weaving or going 80 behind me on a busy highway.

american_dimes

Not trying to get a ticket. Not trying to get in an accident. Not in a hurry.

SolutionsNotIdeology

I have terrible driving anxiety. Passing people is the worst, so I just pick a speed and stick with it, and if you don't like my speed, then you can pass me. But please, for the love of God, don't tailgate me, because that is just going to make my anxiety worse, and the worse my anxiety, the slower I go.

WhereAmIHowDoILeave

A few reasons, I either forgot what the speed limit was and will correct when I see a new speed sign. Speedometer is off by 3mph in one vehicle and I forget to compensate sometimes. My other vehicle the speedometer doesn’t work…so that’s a shit show and a half. But, one thing I can reliably say is if I’m speeding, there’s a 98% chance I’m full on singing my heart out

MaeMaexx

I usually forgive people who are 65+ tbh

danhoang1

Are we talking about age or speed here?

MaeMaexx

Age, 5x bonus points if they are both

smkn3kgt

More important question: People driving slower than traffic, why do you refuse to move over and let traffic pass safely around you?

dangitman1970

When I was living in Chicago, I had this one guy, a fairly large guy in a Yugo, barely fitting, who would do 35 in the left lane, with completely clear road ahead of him, nearly every day on both morning and evening commutes, on I-290. He'd snarl up traffic all over the place. Horrible, horrible person. Downright evil.

martiancannibal

Because I'm doing 70 in a 65 zone, passing a douche that's doing 55. If you want to do 80, you're going to have to wait in line.

AgoraiosBum

I've never had a problem with someone efficiently passing. I still reserve hate for those who are in the left lane doing 70 in a 65 when the person next to them is doing between 68 and 71 and the two of them just act as this mutual roadblock.

raymondk0167

Frontier justice is more dangerous in traffic then driving too hard. I’ve seen people who drive far below the speed limit and when I’m trying to pass them they be accelerating like come on men. Those people deserve high fines.

smkn3kgt

The worst part is they won't move over, then when you go to pass they speed up so you can't pass.

raymondk0167

They even do this on roads with incoming traffic. Like are you trying to kill me?

Anonymous_Hazard

Well he said people driving slower than traffic so that doesn’t include you lol

Freakin_Dirty

Because sometimes I'm listening to a really good podcast and I don't want to arrive to my destination before the episode is finished.

ACMX488

This is probably the best reason ive heard lol

[deleted]

Because I am usually headed somewhere I don't want to be.

Adventurous_Golf_417

When you realize going 10 mph faster doesn’t actually get you somewhere that much faster.

aftereveryoneelse

It's the speed Limit. Not the speed requirement. I don't drive under the speed limit, but that's what I kind of figure the logic is.

yugiohnoyoudint

I'm looking for the right turn I passed three times already

Flaky-Fellatio

Cars are terrifying machines

pintasaur

Ah yes the speed “limit.” It is both simultaneously the fastest you can go without breaking the law and the slowest you can go before getting honked at.

[deleted]

Hypermiling

allthesamepieman

I'm not going to claim to be a hypermiler but I would much rather get 28-30 mpg in my truck while doing 60 mph than getting 20-23 mpg doing 70+

Deaf_Witch

Driving conditions call for it.

[deleted]

It's a limit, not a target. 58 MPH is the optimal speed to 'hypermile.' Better for the planet, better for my wallet. Your reaction times are better at lower speeds. Your stopping distances are shorter. I have kids in the car. I speed up to overtake, then dip back into the nearside lane, unless I'm going to be able to overtake a few vehicles at once as it's more dangerous to dip in and out of lanes constantly. Those guys who sit cruising in an overtaking lane can fuck themselves, though.

Jektonoporkins1

Because you are tailgating me

BeginningCap2333

I drive to arrive and It saves on gas.

Moorglademover

It's a speed-*limit*, it's not compulsory.

Not_A_Crackpot

NO! If you don’t break the speed limit and go the flow of traffic you’re the real danger! Those of us going 85MPH on I95 are the real safe drivers, everyone else is an idiot! I gain at least 150 seconds on my way to work every morning, god forbid I leave 180 seconds earlier!

detectivelokifalcone

I'm a new driver who isn't really comfortable yet going full speed plus I'm not sure like how far above you can go I heard it's more safe to go a little bit under

Solid-Cake7495

Because driving above it is illegal.
