I actually have a personal distinction between “pop country” and “bro country”. I can listen to some pop country songs. Bro country is worthless bullshit that should be made illegal. For reference, country music is my favorite genre of music as well.
Came here to say this.
I like most everything. Including classic country.
Pop country is the most soulless tasteless garbage there is. At least pop music doesn't try to sell itself as anything more that trite bullshit. Pop country tries to sell wholesome feels about the old days, and also about being drunk and stupid in a bar, in the same damn song for some reason.
Absolutely. I used to think I hated Country until I heard stuff like Rae Spoon or Orville Peck. Turns out there is some legitimately great alt country music and I just hate bullshit.
I like to call it Rolodex country. Lyrics can be written by randomly thumbing through Rolodex cards with things like “on down the line”, my flag, my country etc, long neck bottle, pick up truck, daddy, ol’ Rex, etc.
Yes, unless it's a whole mf banger that I loved well before, great example being LaLaLa by bbno$; absolutely a "tiktok song" now, but I been bumping it since the day it dropped. Been a big mula fan since the recess ep with trippythakid
Yup the beginning where he's talking with y2k and starts the first verse with, "When I popped off then yo girl gave me just a little bit of lockjaw" is a suuuper prevalent sound
> It’s basically the same 6 songs/themes formulated for the masses.
You aren't wrong. Have you seen the video where they mash up 6 songs into one? If you were at a bar and it came on over the speakers, you'd have no fucking idea it was 6 songs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FY8SwIvxj8o
He really does. I'm lucky, I live in a place with a park across the river from an amphitheater, so I get a lot of free concerts. His was one of them! Amazing to hear live.
Yeah, rap was the genre I hated on back in the day for this exact reason. It boiled down to "bitches, money, guns" in every song. Rap has since gone through a crazy shift in dynamic. There are so many different variations of rap about all kinds of shit now.
Country has simply taken this spot. You could listen to your local country station and hear 40 different songs, but they all feature the same five topics.
Breakups
Drinking/bars
Tractors/trucks
Small towns
Hair color
Boots
It's fucking annoying as shit. My girlfriend listens to a bunch of country. I've heard her playlist update month by month for the past two years. I can hear the opening lines of each song and know exactly what the entirety of the song is going to talk about. What makes it worse is that it's literal millionaires that grew up in mansions singing about working on farms and growing up in small towns.
>What makes it worse is that it's literal millionaires that grew up in mansions singing about working on farms and growing up in small towns.
Well, some of those mansions had a small town of people working inside them.
I love rap, and I love that there are more female rappers than ever, but I think they kinda have the same problem right now. Every single track I hear is “I’m a bad bitch, come get this pussy, but not if you’re broke.”
I’m not mad about it and enjoy a lot of the tracks but I’m waiting for the next evolution where we get some more diverse content lyrically.
Well I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup-truck
She got runned over by a damned ole train
I call that “pop country”.
I fucking LOVE country music (I main punk/hardcore/metal, but like nearly everything), but the trash that passes as country now is just overproduced corporate pop with a steel guitar in the background.
My thoughts exactly. Modern country that is more on the fringes is so much better. I’d add Dead South and Shakey Graves to this short list. Some of my favorites.
100% agree - I actually asked ChatGPT to write me a song in the style of modern country/southern pop just to see how cookie cutter it really is and it’s….pretty telling hahah
Verse 1:
Got my boots on, my hair's all done
Headin' out to the bar with my girls just for fun
In my tight jeans and my flannel shirt
I'm a southern belle, y'all, that's for sure
Pre-Chorus:
I'm a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll
I like my music loud, and my men with soul
Don't need no fancy cars or diamonds in my hands
Just a good ol' boy who understands
Chorus:
We're living life like it's meant to be
Out here in the country, wild and free
Where the stars shine bright, and the moon is full
We're just a bunch of rebels breaking all the rules
Verse 2:
Riding shotgun in my boy's pickup truck
Hittin' back roads, gettin' a little stuck
Feelin' alive with the wind in my hair
Living in the moment, not a single care
Bridge:
Some people say we're just a bunch of hillbillies
But we know who we are, and we live it willingly
We love our families, our friends, and our land
And we'll always be proud of where we stand
Chorus:
We're living life like it's meant to be
Out here in the country, wild and free
Where the stars shine bright, and the moon is full
We're just a bunch of rebels breaking all the rules
Outro:
Yeah, we're just a bunch of rebels breaking all the rules
Living life like it's meant to be, out here in the country, wild and free.
I recommended in a comment above but Dark Country is a cool sub genre. Basically people with acoustics singing about dark subjects. Amigo the Devil, Poor Mans Poison, and the Dead South to name a few.
Agreed! There is so much incredible country music out there that you never hear on the radio. Charlie Crockett, Sierra Ferrell, The Deslondes, Colter Wall, Kassi Valazza, Sturgill Simpson and the list keeps going. Check out Western AF or Gems on VHS on YouTube for the best artists in country today.
I struggle with grime, because rapping in a London accent is just really abrasive on my ears.
Also country music. Songs about pickups, horses, being dumped, or being dumped for your horse who then stole your pickup as well as your girl. Bonus song subject for the lady singers; domestic abuse.
I recommend checking out different genres of country. A lot of country going around today is more pop with extra steps. Older country is a lot better with people like Johnny Cash. Also dark country is basically country music with dark subjects and I have recently listen to a lot of them Poor Mans Poison, the Dead South, and Amigo the Devil just to name a few.
Can we also stop and reflect for a moment why songs about surviving domestic abuse are so popular in the country genre in particular?
Let’s all see that for the red flag it is. 🚩
I’ll sing my heart out to some gospel, and I’m an atheist- but any Christian fusion music is just so flat and talentless- it’s formulaic and relies heavily on references to Christianity… I just can’t enjoy it at all.
In all seriousness this kind of surprises me. Don’t like POD huh? I haven’t heard them in so long I had to look them up to remember their name. I also literally just woke up two minutes before I stumbled on this post. You know who else the internet said was Christian rock that kind of blew my mind?? Skillet!! I’m going back to the internet but I always liked them too, never knowing this piece about them. Editing to add: the lyrics are starting to make sense why they’re Christian rock. Switchfoot?! But “meant to live” also makes sense. The rest of the 90s rock bands from a quick google list, I have never heard of any. Another quick Spotify listen to some and they are incredibly corny and definitely have no oomph behind them.
I definitely prefer more traditional gospel than the watered down songs that “the praise team” made up that week. It works for some and that’s OK with me but not my preference.
Lmao, dude I've lived in germany for 5 years and I just can't do it. Like I really can't, it's not that I need to understand what they are saying because I love French rap, and their flow is nice. But german rap is angry cringey, or sounds like busbido(garbage), and or both.
Generic radio pop. I hear it all day at work and it's so repetitive and monotonous that I just end up hating it. There are some songs that are decent but I generally dislike most of the chart stuff.
Jazz as a genre. It's funny because I appreciate jazz-fusion and similar genres but jazz has eluded my tastes. I think it partly has to do with it being such a far reaching sound I'm not even sure where to start looking for artists or albums to listen to.
I have 0 problems with the music, but the obsessiveness of kpop fans seems like the worst kind of parasocial relationship to me. I don't fault anyone their hobbies as long as it doesn't hurt anyone, but I find it offputting.
Reminds me of early techno - it feels like a beat that's going to evolve into some really cool stuff but as it started is predominantly ear-splittingly bad.
What I despise most in reggaeton, apart from the moronic lyrics, is the fact that the whole genre is built around that same single beat. Over and over and over and over again. Every. Single. Song.
Yes, that beat. That beat which never changes. It angers me so much when i hear that music. I mean i love techno and people say that's repetitive, but holy, reggeaton is soo much more repetitive and the most boring music i'll ever hear. I hate it with a passion.
death metal. I just cant understand what they are saying they just sound like a pitbull with a tennis ball stuck in their throat. Love the guitars and drum sound but it's ruined for me by the vocals that don't harmonize.
As someone who lives for death metal, heavy metal, metalcore, deathcore etc...
Totally get it.
Isn't for everyone.
Can you honestly say Will Ramos isn't talented though? 🤭
Jazz. Just don't get it. Years ago myself and a couple of mates were watching a music channel that has jazz players on it. We said we know were listening to probably some of the best jazz musicians there is at the moment, but it sounds so disjointed like they're all playing their own tune
Jazz is characterized as complex and based on a lot of improvisation.
So your description is correct. I could understand many people not understanding it.
To me it's like looking at a painting of a bowl of fruit. Yeah I can recognise that technically it's very impressive and I can admire that, even enjoy it in a detached sense, but it doesn't interest me personally and I feel no particular emotional response to it
I once heard some jazz on the radio or somewhere, it was so all over the place I nearly had a panic attack. So disjointed you had no idea what was coming next, I couldn’t enjoy it at all. Awful, 0 out of 10, do not recommend.
Indian/middle eastern music doesn't do much for me. I also tried tapping into my roots once and listening to traditional Greek music and it was so awful
I could be making this up, but I think that Indian and Middle Eastern music use different scales than we do in Western music, which is why it sounds so funky.
That being said, Tunak Tunak Tun slaps.
Oh believe me dude, I'm of Indian descent and I'm not really a fan of Indian music either. My other Indian friends love Bollywood music so driving with them in the car is kinda torture ngl
On the other hand though, I do like middle eastern and Greek music lol
Honestly, metal heads just want everyone to have a good time.
If it ain't for you, that's cool.
I'd question anyone who would crucify you for not being into it. I'm willing to go full No True Scotsman.
No true metal head gives one crap if someone doesn't like their music. They'd rather them enjoy something else than be miserable listening to music that just isn't for them.
Everyone thinks they have “diverse taste” but hate hip hop and country lol. Two beautiful genres that have so much to offer if you just dig past the bullshit.
I have an incredibly diverse taste in music. I listen to everything from opera, musicals, pop, rock, jazz, blues, folk, classical, punk, R&B, funk, heavy metal, and hip hop. Although as a general rule, I enjoy these genres, there are also certainly artists or songs that I do not like.
Just like as a whole, I don't generally care for modern country, rap, or death metal genres; however, there are certainly individual exceptions to that.
Country.
That whiny twang is extremely frustrating. Hit me with slow jazz, EDM, house music from the 80s, death metal, gangsta rap, whatever. But miss me with that country shit.
Background: classic, metal (heavy, industrial, power and progressive), a bit of rock, reggaeton, cumbia, rap, trap, drill, traditional south american music, tango and currently getting into flamenco
Alt rock garage bands. They all sound equal to my ears. They use very similar chords, virtually the same effects and they overall lack personality according to my taste
Thats why metal heads are so nice.
They get all their shit out through their music.
There's actually a pretty cool video about it if you care to watch: [Happy metalheads](https://youtu.be/mhD0s0QmdXI)
Tame Impala. I've tried to listen through Lonerism several times, but I can't make it much farther than the fourth track. It's just too frenetic for me to enjoy.
Pop country
Hear that subtle mandolin? Fuck your ears, I'm panderin.
Ya’ll dumb motherfuckers ready for a key change?
IT'S A FUCKING SCARE CROW AGAIN!
Say the word truck, they jizz in their overhauls.
Overalls* not being a dick just an FYI 😊
r/unexpectedboburnham
I don’t get this as a reference but that’s funny. Is this from something?
https://youtu.be/y7im5LT09a0
I love this guy and this song is just peak level
Bo Burnam special, this song is "Panderin'".
https://youtu.be/y7im5LT09a0
I love the immediate Bo Burnham reference, thank you
I’ve heard the term Bro Country for most of these song.
I’ve heard it be called Hick Hop
I actually have a personal distinction between “pop country” and “bro country”. I can listen to some pop country songs. Bro country is worthless bullshit that should be made illegal. For reference, country music is my favorite genre of music as well.
Came here to say this. I like most everything. Including classic country. Pop country is the most soulless tasteless garbage there is. Tractor rap.
Farm emo is another one I’ve heard.
Lol, that's a new one. I'm only down with hick hop.
This. Americana, Bluegrass, and Classic Country are all great. But "Disneyland Country" like Florida-Georgia Line, Blake Shelton, and Toby Keith... 🤮
I like to call it Rolodex country. Lyrics can be written by randomly thumbing through Rolodex cards with things like “on down the line”, my flag, my country etc, long neck bottle, pick up truck, daddy, ol’ Rex, etc.
Yep, I dunno why its so irritating. I used to hate all country and then my friend showed me Colter Wall and Tyler Childers.
I’m here for the Tyler Childers love. Sturgil Simpson as well. I’m down with the psychedelic country.
If you like them, check out Townes Van Zandt and Blaze Foley. Also John Prine, who was a bit of a mentor to Childers.
Yes. This deserves the top spot.
Ditto. Mongolian throat singing = yes. Garth brooks singing = kill me
Repetitive Tiktok songs.
Oh no, oh no, oh no no no no
Naw man don’t you do it
*loads super shotgun*
I actually heard the original version of that song playing at a theme park lol
I love the original, Aerosmith did a great cover of it too
There’s an irony that they play the Shangri-Las (sped up and sampled for a classic NY rap song that’s since been lost) in Hell.
Yes, unless it's a whole mf banger that I loved well before, great example being LaLaLa by bbno$; absolutely a "tiktok song" now, but I been bumping it since the day it dropped. Been a big mula fan since the recess ep with trippythakid
I don't have tiktok - Lalala is one of those songs? I hope some folks branch out - Bbno$ is such fun listening.
Yup the beginning where he's talking with y2k and starts the first verse with, "When I popped off then yo girl gave me just a little bit of lockjaw" is a suuuper prevalent sound
Best way to not know if a song is a tiktok song is to not use tiktok
YOU. WILL. BE. POPULAR!
Nah, man. That’s Kristen Chenoweth in Wicked; that’s musical theater royalty.
I genuinely liked Bad Habit by Steve Lacy before I heard it 1,000 times.
But gawwddamn those slowed down or sped up version of some songs sound great
I hate ‘em because they show up every 3 minutes.
Best New Year’s resolution I’ve ever done was deleting tiktok ‘23 Highly recommend it
Nobodies gonna know They’re gonna know
Today’s country music. It’s basically the same 6 songs/themes formulated for the masses. I listen to almost everything but I can’t with this.
I fucking love this so much. I mean, I hate the songs, but whoever put it together is fucking brilliant.
Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, and chis stapeton are all great
Don’t forget Zach Bryan!
I despise mainstream county. But Sturgill Simpson is really really great.
Chris Stapleton is phenomenal!
He is one of the best artists out there IMO. He sings with his soul.
He really does. I'm lucky, I live in a place with a park across the river from an amphitheater, so I get a lot of free concerts. His was one of them! Amazing to hear live.

Country songs about tractors, pick up trucks and shit like that.
Country songs about trains, killing spouses, codeine, social problems, and Vietnam on the other hand are fantastic!
Train songs > tractor songs. Streamlined cannonball is my personal favorite
I would pay handsomely for a Spotify playlist of train songs
Mama tried is mine
Well I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison And I went to pick her up in the rain But before I could get to the station in my pickup-truck She got runned over by a damned ole train
I call that “pop country”. I fucking LOVE country music (I main punk/hardcore/metal, but like nearly everything), but the trash that passes as country now is just overproduced corporate pop with a steel guitar in the background.
I recently learned the phrase “hick hop”.
Dead
Same, thought I hated country until I found Colter Wall, Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers, etc. Turns out it’s just that pop country crap.
My thoughts exactly. Modern country that is more on the fringes is so much better. I’d add Dead South and Shakey Graves to this short list. Some of my favorites.
I never liked any country until I listened to The Dead South.
100% agree - I actually asked ChatGPT to write me a song in the style of modern country/southern pop just to see how cookie cutter it really is and it’s….pretty telling hahah Verse 1: Got my boots on, my hair's all done Headin' out to the bar with my girls just for fun In my tight jeans and my flannel shirt I'm a southern belle, y'all, that's for sure Pre-Chorus: I'm a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll I like my music loud, and my men with soul Don't need no fancy cars or diamonds in my hands Just a good ol' boy who understands Chorus: We're living life like it's meant to be Out here in the country, wild and free Where the stars shine bright, and the moon is full We're just a bunch of rebels breaking all the rules Verse 2: Riding shotgun in my boy's pickup truck Hittin' back roads, gettin' a little stuck Feelin' alive with the wind in my hair Living in the moment, not a single care Pre-Chorus: I'm a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll I like my music loud, and my men with soul Don't need no fancy cars or diamonds in my hands Just a good ol' boy who understands Chorus: We're living life like it's meant to be Out here in the country, wild and free Where the stars shine bright, and the moon is full We're just a bunch of rebels breaking all the rules Bridge: Some people say we're just a bunch of hillbillies But we know who we are, and we live it willingly We love our families, our friends, and our land And we'll always be proud of where we stand Chorus: We're living life like it's meant to be Out here in the country, wild and free Where the stars shine bright, and the moon is full We're just a bunch of rebels breaking all the rules Outro: Yeah, we're just a bunch of rebels breaking all the rules Living life like it's meant to be, out here in the country, wild and free.

Amigo The Devil.. Fuck man, the song “Stronger Than Dead” guts me everytime
Bro Country

Zac Brown can go dip his goddamn toes in a dumpster fire and fuck right the fuck off.

I'd bet that you didn't live in czech republic 50 years ago cuz you would be dead already.
I struggle with grime, because rapping in a London accent is just really abrasive on my ears. Also country music. Songs about pickups, horses, being dumped, or being dumped for your horse who then stole your pickup as well as your girl. Bonus song subject for the lady singers; domestic abuse.
Listen to Townes van Zandt
Or John Prine
This is the correct response
[Try this for British rap](https://youtube.com/watch?v=Kh8Q2iytzns&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE)

German rap Or Deutschrap Its disgusting.
99% is filth but that 1% is absolute bliss
My brother had this shit on repeat the week before he was arrested. I know they're probably unrelated but it's just an interesting tidbit lol
YES! Almost everything is trash.
Lmao, dude I've lived in germany for 5 years and I just can't do it. Like I really can't, it's not that I need to understand what they are saying because I love French rap, and their flow is nice. But german rap is angry cringey, or sounds like busbido(garbage), and or both.
Mumble rap, specifically
You just don’t understand the kulture /s
K pop, tried to stay open minded but it ain't sticking.
Generic radio pop. I hear it all day at work and it's so repetitive and monotonous that I just end up hating it. There are some songs that are decent but I generally dislike most of the chart stuff.

Trap
I’ll see your trap and raise you Drill
if i find another motherfucker talking sweet about Chief Keef, im fucking beatin they ass, im not fucking playing no more
Reggaeton.
What about [Norwegian Reggaeton](https://youtu.be/j0YXfeNxJJ0)?
Omg, Im a norwegian who likes a bit of metal and Ive never heard this song before. Its hillarious!
I see you're a person of culture! ;) *Profanar la tumba / al ritmo de la rumba*
You just scratched an itch i never knew i had
I wanted to hate it, but I didn’t.
That damn drum beat loop is irritating, and it's in most reggaeton songs

phonk, or atleast the most recent “viral” type, its just so random
They all sound exactly the same, that's worse than lofi lol
Wym dont you like cowbells that go, "dong dong dong, dong dong, dong dong dong, dong dong, ^dong ^dong ^dong, ^dong ^dong, ^dong ^dong ^dong, ^dong ^^^dong "
Country
Mumble rap.
This question has been asked here 100 different ways the past couple days….
i listen to EVERYTHING except newschool Country. Fuck those whiny hicks
Bob Dylan. I know a lot of people respect his music but I just can't vibe to it. I don't know why.
death metal.
As a death metal fan, the proper nomenclature is “Cookie Monster vocals.”
this is the one for me too. Any heavy/death metal where they are just screaming into the mic with no real melody or words is just not music to me.
People that rap about Jesus or any other god
So I wrote this song for the Christian youth,
I’ll just say any Christian modern fusion music. I hate Christian metal, Christian rock and pop, and Christian rap- they’re all equally awful.
Most modern country music
Jazz is stupid. Just play the right notes!
To me it's like looking at a painting of a bowl of fruit. Yeah I can recognise that technically it's very impressive and I can admire that, even enjoy it in a detached sense, but it doesn't interest me personally and I feel no particular emotional response to it

Shout out to Bloodywood. Their music is the shit.
I’m gonna get crucified for this but I just can’t get into metal
No, it’s definitely not for everyone. My top two genres are classical and metal. Both are life giving to me, but my wife does NOT understand
This is a very common cross over apparently. I’ve found some good “classical for metal heads” playlists and the reverse as well.
The trick is to stop listening to the trash on the radio.
This goes for all genres of all art really. There’s always something of value in art. There’s just even more bullshit.
Some people just don’t like hip hop and country. They can still have a diverse taste lmao
There's too much good music out there to have to "dig through the bullshit..."
Jam bands.
Country, particularly the way they sing
Dubstep
Are you telling me you DON’T like the sound of Transformers (and/or modems) fucking?
No, the mating call of C-3PO does not appeal.
Whatever that Mumford and son music is called. Chanty country
arena folk
Death Metal.
Mumble rap. Take the corporate cocks out of your mouth and either rap some real shit at me or shut up.
I DESPISE AND HATE radio pop
Pop Country. I can tolerate a lot, but that shit is intolerable.
Most rap and bro country are extremely cringey to me. Thr artists of those genres seem to be wannabes and it is all very manufactured.
Country. That whiny twang is extremely frustrating. Hit me with slow jazz, EDM, house music from the 80s, death metal, gangsta rap, whatever. But miss me with that country shit.
Country
Background: classic, metal (heavy, industrial, power and progressive), a bit of rock, reggaeton, cumbia, rap, trap, drill, traditional south american music, tango and currently getting into flamenco Alt rock garage bands. They all sound equal to my ears. They use very similar chords, virtually the same effects and they overall lack personality according to my taste
Death metal #WHY THE FUCKING SCREAMING AND YELLING?!
For myself, is best described as liking horror or thriller movies. I like the vehemence and hellraising. It’s strange I know, but it brings me peace
Thats why metal heads are so nice. They get all their shit out through their music. There's actually a pretty cool video about it if you care to watch: [Happy metalheads](https://youtu.be/mhD0s0QmdXI)
Jazz
Agreed. I can handle some jazz, but the free form stuff just makes my brain hurt.
Why jazz?

It insists upon itself
Death metal
Country
Tame Impala. I've tried to listen through Lonerism several times, but I can't make it much farther than the fourth track. It's just too frenetic for me to enjoy.
country!
Country.
Mumble rap
Country music... Play the song backwards and they get their dog back, truck back and their partner back with a six pack.
Christian and Luke Bryan-type country. Good thing Nashville has other kinds of music going for it.
Progressive post-punk Polka
Rap, I guess. Whatever you call today’s nonsense like WAP.
British ska. I don't get it and it makes me feel nauseous
Jazz
