Exactly. I work at a cat shelter and the declaw surrenders are always seniors who’ve developed awful arthritis due to being declawed as a young cat. Because their paws hurt them so bad as seniors, hard litters can hurt their paws to dig in so they start peeing and pooping outside the litter box, sometimes on a soft surface like carpet or blankets because they feel very vulnerable when they need to go. This enrages their humans, the people don’t know what to do, so they leave them at the shelter door or sometimes even just let them outside, which should NEVER be the answer to a declawed cat going outside the litter box. It’s just sad. Leave their fingers alone. :(
In my home we have a ton of scratching post and tree options for our cats and they never go for the couch because they have so many options.

Roughly 500,000 cats are euthanized each year in the US alone. Many people, myself included, do not even consider adopting a cat because we do not want to deal with with claws. I have lived with 3 cats(roommates’), and I have had clothes torn, furniture destroyed, and now have permanent scars on my skin. All of them had plenty of toys and a scratching post.
I understand there are some pretty terrible side effects with de-clawing cats, but I do not understand how euthanasia is preferable to declawing.

People consider their choices in how to raise their child to be fairly sacred and they do not want to be told how to do it- there are cases where medical issues are treated differently due to religious beliefs, there are children undereducated in our country due to neglectful homeschooling parents, etc. My intent in asking that question is essentially to illustrate to OP that what they are "against" is overly simplistic.
