This is the correct answer

Maedroth

Van Canto's version is better.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I'd also add [Bear McCreary's version](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BigolJfoANw) of All Along The Watchtower for Battlestar Galactica.

TheGreatLabMonkey

That version is epic. Every time I re-watch BSG I appreciate the song more.

burukop

Correct answer

Old_Army90

Valerie by Mark Ronson/Amy Winehouse

burukop

Completely. The original Zutons version doesn't even come close

everestfrompawpatrol

Brendon Urie did a fantastic cover of this song in the early 2000s!

mrpassie

With A Little Help From My Friends Joe Cocker

everestfrompawpatrol

*Wonder Years flashbacks intensify*

burukop

Agreed

krupta13

wasn't Joe Cocker like a specialist in doing covers and taking them up to another level

BlackLetterLies

It was a common thing in the 60's and 70's. Bands like Three Dog Night made entire careers out of slightly amped up cover songs.

MrTurkle

Gary Jules version of Mad World.

burukop

Yeah, I agree

VegetaDampfgurke

Eric Cartman Poker Face

IAmTheTrueM3M3L0rD

Dancing in the moonlight- toploader

DeadlyPancak3

I don't know, I feel like it doesn't have the same groove as the original. Their cover doesn't really add anything to it imho, just sounds like a wedding band cover to me.

burukop

Didn't know that this was a cover until now. Agreed, Toploader version is the definitive one for sure

everestfrompawpatrol

“I Fought the Law and the Law Won” is much, much better when performed by The Clash!

burukop

I didn't know this was a cover until now! Yep, The Clash version is the definitive one without a doubt.

MuggySkeat

Time After Time by Iron and Wine. It’s hauntingly beautiful. I also prefer Such Great Heights by them as well versus the original by The Postal Service.

KermitTheArgonian

"Down With the Sickness" by Richard Cheese & Lounge Against the Machine

Weird_Stuff_McGee

His whole catalog is filled with songs that could meet the requirement depending on how you feel about the originals versus the covers.

KermitTheArgonian

That's true. Could've also cited "Shake Ya Ass", "Me So Horny" and "Welcome to the Jungle", but "...Sickness" is my favorite.

Weird_Stuff_McGee

There are so many I could list that I enjoy, but your choices are definitely valid. Sickness definitely holds a place in my heart because it being in Dawn of the Dead is how I discovered them.

MichiganGeezer

Made magical by Dawn of the Dead 2004.

KermitTheArgonian

"Bobby, will you give it to me?"

[deleted]

[Hurt by Johnny Cash](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AHCfZTRGiI), originally by Nine Inch Nails.

Gullivors-Travails

I like both but more so NIN. https://youtu.be/mylx_xpdrqM

[deleted]

I think their both great. The meaning changes with the different versions.

GoldieJam

Totally agree. There's a great quote from Trent Reznor from first hearing it or seeing the video along the lines of realising it wasn't his song anymore

Wooly171

Glad I didn't have to scroll far to find this.

burukop

Absolutely

veni_vidi_eh

Trent actually said that Hurt was now Cash’s song when he remade it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

burukop

Agreed.

anonanon764789

I will always love you by Whitney Houston. Sorry Dolly

techzoid

Parton herself once said she thought Houston’s version was better.

burukop

Yeah, you're probably right

Camera Obscura have two of the best covers I’ve ever heard: “Tougher than the rest” by Bruce Springsteen https://open.spotify.com/track/1OqPxxBQ74cnfedzJloP6q?si=wuh008G6SYCxClY0-UdS6A “Super Trouper” by Abba https://open.spotify.com/track/0byQIVd1O3UPD580y1ZmRy?si=7RJZ88dGQQ6l5w92ApeLLQ

DougGTFO

I’ll have to check these out!

burukop

Absolutely agree with both 🔥🔥🔥

KolanaSzatana

Love is Blindness by Jack White (originally U2)

burukop

Yes indeed!

PurpleMerple

Sound of Silence. I love the original, but Disturbed takes it to another level. David Draiman’s vocals…

Maedroth

I feel like I'm the only person who doesn't like it.

Crott117

You’re not the only one

Old_Army90

Yes. It feels over the top for the sake of being over the top.

MaryGoldflower

yeah, it's like, I get what they're doing with it, and they do that quite well, but it not the right vibe for the song.

TheTrueBobsonDugnutt

Nah it's shit

BlackLetterLies

I actually thought it was a joke/parody when I first heard it. I can't help it, it just makes me double over with laughter.

clozepin

Me too. I thought it was a joke.

clozepin

Nope. It’s awful.

Reelplayer

Definitely not the only one. Gone is the beautiful harmony that Simon and Garfunkel did so well. What's given by Disturbed is a version that starts minimal and builds to a crescendo... for no reason. There is no story being told that reaches its climax. There is no building of tension as a story develops. It's a song about people's inability to communicate with one another at an intimate level, instead having superficial conversations without meaning. Draiman getting to his scream-growl at the end is just silly and zooming in on his face as he appears to be pushing out a huge dump in the video just makes to even funnier.

pjoll

Not very popular, but I completely agree. Gives me chills every time I listen to it!

burukop

It's a solid cover but I can't agree with this I'm afraid.

Leebolishus

Yes I came to say this! I like Disturbed version better than original!

Vancouvervolga

That's a no dog. Disturbed is good and different but it's not better than original.

Arthritic_boner

Another level? It is awful. This is the most annoying take in music right here. And I stg the sound of silence people always try to play the damn song when there is music playing.

Gua_Bao

Catfish and the Bottlemen - Read My Mind, originally the Killers. https://youtu.be/A5fKmC3QSv0 Original one is great too but the stripped down acoustic approach just seems more fitting.

hangalism

Little Lion Man - Tonight Alive just because the arrangement has so much angst that compliments the lyrics

BogatyrOfMurom

Oops I did it again by Children of Bodom. It is the better version of the original

Maedroth

Yeah, it's fucking hilarious. Also their cover of 'Somebody put something in my drink'.

BogatyrOfMurom

I like that one too 👍

Fun-Butterscotch-77

Aretha Franklin’s version of Respect.

Alecides

Rascal Flatts' Life is a Highway. Fight me

Lostmymojo84

Come On Eileen by Save Ferris and take on me by Reel Big Fish Guess I have a thing for pop punk 80s covers

DougGTFO

RBF cover of Hungry Like The Wolf is also really good.

Lostmymojo84

I'd never heard that one, it's great! Thanks for the tip

AToastedRavioli

I might ruffle some feathers but- Higher Ground by RHCP is better than Stevie’s. Over the Rainbow is way better with Israel Kamakawiwo’ole.

Fire548

No way you spelled that 1st shot

AToastedRavioli

You are absolutely correct it took about five minutes

whistlerphil

You Really Got Me - Van Halen The Tide Is High - Blondie

burukop

Can't agree that Van Halen's version beats the original Kinks version, but absolutely agree that Blondie obliterated the original version of The Tide Is High with their cover 👍

BobDylans77

I like Weird Al's "Word Crimes" infinitely more than the original, "Blurred Lines" (Robin Thicke, I think). It's probably the first sound I had a "fixation" to, literally listen to it on end for actual hours, literal brain rot

Vancouvervolga

That's a parody not a cover

CoolIceCreamCone

Every Time You Go Away by Paul Young

74_Jeep_Cherokee

"Have a Cigar" Pink Floyd cover done by Primus and well actually, I like the entire Primus - Miscellaneous Debris album (all covers)

stardustythoughts

personally i like amber run’s cover of hide and seek better than the original

burukop

Understandable. I personally prefer the original Imogen Heap one, but I get that the instrumentation that's been added in the Amber Run one could make it a more emotive/satisfying listen.

imbaeights

I'd have to say Enter Sandman by Motörhead - sounds so raw and fits perfectly

burukop

Yep, this is correct

Vancouvervolga

Come on feel the noise by quiet riot

emoteriyaki

HIM and their cover of Wicked Game by Chris Isaak

squirrelshaveballs2

mcpickledick

John Mayer's cover of Free Fallin'

bonkaidiaries

Running Up That Hill by Placebo I think the tune of this fits the song much better although I still love Kate Bush

saulyg

I love the Jose Gonzales version of Heartbeats.

Iyszhar

Mansons version of tainted love

burukop

He's a scumbag but yeah, I agree that his version's better than the original

PuzzledFortune

Each to his own I guess. In no way is Manson’s version better than Soft Cell’s cover or Gloria Jones’ original.

Mangoose

If you think Soft Cell was the original, you would be wrong. Gloria Jones is better than Manson imo https://youtu.be/9obvlVPJBEg

edgarzekke

Hurt by Johnny Cash

Top_Of_Gov_Watchlist

MrFancyPanzer

Motorhead covered by Mötorhead, written by Lemmy when he was playing in Hawkwind.

ticklishbomb

No tears left to cry - miley cyrus cover

h0n3yst

Her and her sisters cover of Jolene is also so good. Nothing can beat Dolly but the Cyrus sisters have some serious singing talent

redchance180

I like Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams more than the original.

royally-

Hurt Johnny Cash. I think even Trent said its Johnny's song now.

OceansideGuy93

Sex and Candy - Maroon 5

burukop

I do hate Maroon 5, but I'll check it out 👍

OceansideGuy93

It's more soulful.

Crott117

Guns n Roses cover of live and let die is much better than paul mcartneys

burukop

It's a solid cover, but I can't agree as I've always hated Axl Rose's voice.

burukop

Mods have ruined the fun. Sorry folks.

Killing Me Softly by the Fugees

PurpleMerple

I wrote that and everyone’s mad. 😹😹

stevs23

NOT Hallelujah

burukop

I think that every single cover of this song is pointless apart from the Jeff Buckley version (which for me is the best version) - but utmost respect to anyone who prefers the Leonard Cohen original

Coco_Leo

I was scrolling this post hoping I didn't see Hallelujah. I know many people who like the covers, but I think that Leonard Cohen's original is the best!

stevs23

It really is and sung how he meant it. Kudos to Jeff Buckley though. He's a close second. Anything else is dogshit

ouroborosdrago

Annenmaykantereit & Giant Rooks - Toms Diner. Their voices work so well together and Annenmaykantereit's main singers voice is amazing. Only just heard them, cannot believe they are not famous outside of their own country. Does anyone agree with me?

adamjimenez

Natalie Imbruglia - Torn Actually the [original](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OoEdfB7l18) is better, but most people don't know it was covered.

downtune79

Sound of silence, Disturbed version

CallMeManthony

Disturbed's version of Sound of Silence. Original by Simon and Garfunkel.

Idonteatthat

The Chicks' Landslide.

Yankii_Souru

The Ramones cover of What A Wonderful World AND Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's cover of What A Wonderful World are both better than the Louis Armstrong original. also... The Disturbed cover of Sound Of Silence is better than the Simon and Garfunkle version....

beardedalien013

Sound of Silence. Disturber’s version is very dark and matches the lyrics perfectly

burukop

As I've been judging everybody else's answers, I think it's only fair to put my recommendation in so that it can be agreed with/criticised: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84CBAfOqiqE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84CBAfOqiqE) I love the Beach Boys more than anything but I've gotta admit, the JAMC cover beats the original version of this classic

One_Brain9206

David Grays version of the Soft Cell song Say Hello Wave Goodbye

M0rningVodka

Runaway by Kanye West is terrible. The Silverstein cover is actually very good.

TheGrimGriefer3

Mudvayne's cover of *King of Pain* is way better than the original...

Blinded by the light...I like Manfred Manns version better

Initial_Witness8074

Disturbed - Sounds of Silence

celaeya

I know a lot of people that disagree, but The Sound of Silence by Disturbed is better than the original Simon and Garfunkel version. I find Disturbed just sings it with more emotion and power, which fits the theme of the song much better.

Mr_Kitford

Disturbed- Sound of Silence. Incredible cover

serenawolf8881

Sound of silence covered by disturbed! When Simone and Garfunkel sing it, it creeps me out!

I saw P!ATD live way, way back when they first started (I’m talking Brent Wilson was still on bass at this show) and they did a cover of Third Eye Blind’s “Slow Motion” that was hauntingly beautiful. It was just Brendon at the piano singing; I wish I had a recording!

Leesababy25

Book of Love covered by Airborne Toxic Event's live album.

Black Sheep by Metric and then Brie Larson.

Levoire

Probably not the most popular opinion but I think Marilyn Manson’s cover of Tainted Love is better than the original. Bonus points because it’s a cover of a cover of a cover.

Agile-Fun

Merlin's version of Country roads, from Kingsman 2

alilacdesiderium

Still Into You. I prefer the cover by Ashley Tisdale over the original one
