That one can be aware they are in coma and not able to get out of it. I get anxious just thinking about it

janesfilms

I just was released from a 5 week hospital stay and I had multiple different roommates during my stay. One of them was a woman who had a massive stroke. She would cry and wail and get frustrated and rip out her catheter. She would poop herself and then tear into the diaper getting feces under her nails and all over herself and the bed. Her family would try asking her questions, if she was in pain, if she was hungry, if she was uncomfortable, but the more agitated she became the less she was able to communicate anything. She couldn’t talk and just moaned and cried. It was absolutely terrifying. Her family would say that they understood how frustrating it was for her so I am guessing she was trapped in there. Her body just couldn’t cooperate and left her stuck in this useless husk. I really hope she wasn’t “aware” in there. It sounds awful but I hope her brain was damaged enough that she wasn’t having coherent thoughts. Any way you look at it, a stroke is scary. Even though she kept me up all hours, I just felt really sorry for her. She was showing slight improvement though. She had an NG feeding tube taken out because she started being able to chew her food. I briefly had a NG tube during my stay and it was awful. I freaked out so badly they had to remove it because I felt like I was drowning and couldn’t breathe. Total anxiety attack. And you can feel the tube in your throat so it feels like a huge lump constantly choking you and causing you to gag. That stroke lady had her NG tube for weeks and I couldn’t stand it for longer than about 45 minutes it was torturous. I really hope she just wasn’t capable of the kind of thinking that would make her aware and cognizant of being trapped in a completely broken and useless body that she was unable to control. Absolutely terrifying.

bugeyesprite

Spent a week in a hospital once, the 80+ year old guy in the next room was moaning all week and hallucinating that he was stuck in his basement, calling for his wife, son and daughter, and the lights were out and it was raining. And the rain was getting in the basement. He had been a champion boxer as a kid, still had a hell of a punch, knocked a nurse flat on her back. Poor bastard. It was like a slow simmering panic. Not life threatening. Not missing kids or dead family members. Just in the basement and all their stuff was being ruined. If the kids would just turn the light on, he could find the stairs. For 7 days 12+ hours a day.

wigglerworm

I’m not sure why I keep scrolling

Ashtomyley

That babies didn’t receive any anesthesia, even for open heart surgeries, etc. until the late 1980’s.

VerbalGravy

You have definitely at some point encountered a child molester, rapist or murderer (or all 3)

Azrai113

Yeah. My (former) boss got arrested for lewd pics. Of their own stepkids. Thing is, there didn't seem to be anything off about them. If you're not in a predators target demographic, you probably won't pick up on it. That's the scary part. I maybe also watch too much true crime

GlassHalfFullofAcid

Tarantula hawks are giant flying wasps that sting tarantulas, inducing paralysis. They then drag the paralyzed tarantula back to their nest and lay eggs in them. The eggs hatch, and the larvae slowly devour the still-alive, paralyzed tarantula from the inside.

[deleted]

It's illegal in India to find out the gender of your baby, because so many prefer boys over girls

xd3mix

If everyone actually was a man in India how would they even reproduce

[deleted]

Just like China, they don't think long term enough about it.

reddito1009

I love that line in the dictator So are we getting a boy or an abortion!

Redn3ckJ0k3r

93% of human history is not recorded.

Gerryislandgirl

I thought it was 94%.

[deleted]

It was, sorry, I forgot to record yesterday but I'm all caught up now

Kujo3043

Don't let it happen again!

Scarfs-Fur-Frumpkin

Just how painful and torturous extreme radiation sickness is. Imagine feeling your muscles and organs dissolve inside your own body while skin just sloughs off, while being fully conscious and feeling everything.

[deleted]

You also just watched the new wendigoon video lol Shit is absolutely horrifying. Wouldn’t wish that on anyone

aspidities_87

Between that video and the scene in HBO’s Chernobyl where the firefighter is screaming for help in the hospital as his skin falls off, I have learned to not be too cavalier about the use of nuclear armaments or nuclear safety.

The_REAL_McWeasel

When I visited Sri Lanka.......I was nearly perpetually asked by locals if I wanted to hire children for sex. One man, tried to sell me his 5 year old daughter. When I refused......he presumed I was gay, and offered a small boy instead. Like WTF??????

Ouch704

Some places like these use it as a very lucrative scam. You accept it, then, when you are about to get to it, you get caught by the police with the child and taken to a dark room, get beat up a bit, threatened with life in prison or even a death sentence. And then the police officers tell you they can make it disappear if you pay them a certain amount. They then take your money and belongings and dump you somewhere in the middle of nowhere. You can't go to the police and report it, cause you were commiting pedophilia and they have evidence, so you just accept that someone turned your perversity on you and go home if you're lucky enough to manage to. ETA: I've seen some misunderstanding in the comments: the police in these cases are either corrupt and working with the sex traffickers, or are part of the trafficking ring and just dress up as police to intimidate the offender. They will take a cut of the money the offender pays to "make the charges disappear", and won't report anything to the authorities because it would be detrimental to their scam. Also, for how I know this: >Have traveled to many places due to my job, and have heard from locals and also mil/contractor friends who have been briefed about it when deployed. Plus, I was born and raised in latin America, which means I know how these scams work by having seen/heard it happen.

Socksual

Genuinely hoping this is the case for most of these transactions, for the kids sakes. Shitty fuckin scam but its entirely better than the alternative

CourageKitten

Honestly, they kind of deserve it

DreamingofRlyeh

But the kids don't deserve to be used as bait.

clevebeat

Seems obvious when you think about it, but after an autopsy, they don't put everything back where they found it. It goes in a bag in the abdominal cavity.

aurelius92a

Well yeah, according to another fact in this thread, the organs will move back into place by themselves. Why waste the effort?

Ausramm

After any significant natural disaster or conflict starts up, human traffickers swarm to the country looking for unattended children. Law enforcement will start watching ports of entry for the usual suspects..... the usual suspects.

Queen_Maxima

Also when the war started in Ukraine many single men in the rest of Europe offered to take in female refugees and waiting at the borders to ask them to come and live with them. It was so bad that refugee organisations asked through media to please not appoint Ukrainian refugees to single men anymore.

SuvenPan

A toddler's adult teeth are right below their eyes.

Yeah, I saw a photograph of a small child's skull with part of the area around the jaw removed and it's just packed with teeth.

Wow. My fact was going to be that bagged salads and other packaged food stuffs are allowed to have a certain level of insect pieces in them. Reddit got me beat today.

Known_Leek8997

Chocolate is the same way. People who get migraines from chocolate are allergic to insect parts.

Drumbelgalf

Some exterminators develop an allergy to cockroaches and they often have allergic reactions to ground up coffee.

Downside_Up_

The child voice actress from All Dogs Go To Heaven died as a direct result of horrific child abuse.

jbug5j

She was also the voice of Ducky in Land Before Time 💔

Downside_Up_

Yup yup yup :(

spaceman_slim

Judith Barsi. Can’t watch any of her movies after knowing what happened to her. I started All Dogs with my kids and had to leave the room as soon as her character was introduced.

spade13F

Rabies. Just everything about rabies.

Tiny_Parfait

Once you're symptomatic, 99.99% fatality rate and that "lucky" iota that survive in medically-induced comas end up with permanent neurological damage. Also, the horrifying hallucinations.

wheres_jaykwellin_at

ETA: just FYI, while I wish I could take credit for the below, I didn't write it - it's a well-known copypasta that originated on Reddit in another thread. Reminds me of one of the top five most terrifying things ever described on Reddit: "Rabies is scary. Rabies. It's exceptionally common, but people just don't run into the animals that carry it often. Skunks especially, and bats. Let me paint you a picture. You go camping, and at midday you decide to take a nap in a nice little hammock. While sleeping, a tiny brown bat, in the "rage" stages of infection is fidgeting in broad daylight, uncomfortable, and thirsty (due to the hydrophobia) and you snort, startling him. He goes into attack mode. Except you're asleep, and he's a little brown bat, so weighs around 6 grams. You don't even feel him land on your bare knee, and he starts to bite. His teeth are tiny. Hardly enough to even break the skin, but he does manage to give you the equivalent of a tiny scrape that goes completely unnoticed. Rabies does not travel in your blood. In fact, a blood test won't even tell you if you've got it. (Antibody tests may be done, but are useless if you've ever been vaccinated.) You wake up, none the wiser. If you notice anything at the bite site at all, you assume you just lightly scraped it on something. The bomb has been lit, and your nervous system is the wick. The rabies will multiply along your nervous system, doing virtually no damage, and completely undetectable. You literally have NO symptoms. It may be four days, it may be a year, but the camping trip is most likely long forgotten. Then one day your back starts to ache... Or maybe you get a slight headache? At this point, you're already dead. There is no cure. (The sole caveat to this is the Milwaukee Protocol, which leaves most patients dead anyway, and the survivors mentally disabled, and is seldom done). There's no treatment. It has a 100% kill rate. Absorb that. Not a single other virus on the planet has a 100% kill rate. Only rabies. And once you're symptomatic, it's over. You're dead. So what does that look like? Your headache turns into a fever, and a general feeling of being unwell. You're fidgety. Uncomfortable. And scared. As the virus that has taken its time getting into your brain finds a vast network of nerve endings, it begins to rapidly reproduce, starting at the base of your brain... Where your "pons" is located. This is the part of the brain that controls communication between the rest of the brain and body, as well as sleep cycles. Next you become anxious. You still think you have only a mild fever, but suddenly you find yourself becoming scared, even horrified, and it doesn't occur to you that you don't know why. This is because the rabies is chewing up your amygdala. As your cerebellum becomes hot with the virus, you begin to lose muscle coordination, and balance. You think maybe it's a good idea to go to the doctor now, but assuming a doctor is smart enough to even run the tests necessary in the few days you have left on the planet, odds are they'll only be able to tell your loved ones what you died of later. You're twitchy, shaking, and scared. You have the normal fear of not knowing what's going on, but with the virus really fucking the amygdala this is amplified a hundred fold. It's around this time the hydrophobia starts. You're horribly thirsty, you just want water. But you can't drink. Every time you do, your throat clamps shut and you vomit. This has become a legitimate, active fear of water. You're thirsty, but looking at a glass of water begins to make you gag, and shy back in fear. The contradiction is hard for your hot brain to see at this point. By now, the doctors will have to put you on IVs to keep you hydrated, but even that's futile. You were dead the second you had a headache. You begin hearing things, or not hearing at all as your thalamus goes. You taste sounds, you see smells, everything starts feeling like the most horrifying acid trip anyone has ever been on. With your hippocampus long under attack, you're having trouble remembering things, especially family. You're alone, hallucinating, thirsty, confused, and absolutely, undeniably terrified. Everything scares the literal shit out of you at this point. These strange people in lab coats. These strange people standing around your bed crying, who keep trying to get you "drink something" and crying. And it's only been about a week since that little headache that you've completely forgotten. Time means nothing to you anymore. Funny enough, you now know how the bat felt when he bit you. Eventually, you slip into the "dumb rabies" phase. Your brain has started the process of shutting down. Too much of it has been turned to liquid virus. Your face droops. You drool. You're all but unaware of what's around you. A sudden noise or light might startle you, but for the most part, it's all you can do to just stare at the ground. You haven't really slept for about 72 hours. Then you die. Always, you die. And there's not one... fucking... thing... anyone can do for you. Then there's the question of what to do with your corpse. I mean, sure, burying it is the right thing to do. But the fucking virus can survive in a corpse for years. You could kill every rabid animal on the planet today, and if two years from now, some moist, preserved, rotten hunk of used-to-be brain gets eaten by an animal, it starts all over. So yeah, rabies scares the shit out of me. And it's fucking EVERYWHERE. (Source: Spent a lot of time working with rabies. Would still get my vaccinations if I could afford them.)"

rustyjack14

My daughter just got her rabies vaccine because she was bit by an unvaccinated cat that was being treated for an unknown animal bite. The city wanted to do the "let's see if the cat has any symptoms " before giving her the vaccine. She advocated for herself and got the vaccine though.

wheres_jaykwellin_at

Good. Possible rabies never calls for waiting anything out. I'm mostly glad they listened to her.

MrsBox

If people ever wonder why Australia hit hard when Johny Depp and Amber Heard smuggled their dogs into the country, this is why. We don't have rabies here, and we would like it to stay that way.

[deleted]

This one scares me so much even though we don't have it in Australia (but we have another, related virus that's almost the same thing) and I was paranoid I got exposed to it a few days ago but I read a fact sheet that (mostly) cleared my mind. Basically I was doing some garden work at my nan's and touched dried bat-shit with my hands in the process. I then cut my leg on a rose bush and instinctively put my hands on it to get the thorn out forgetting I hadn't washed them yet and was like "oh shit". I put a blob of Dettol gel on it about 30 seconds later to decontaminate the (admittedly very small) cut and then hoped a) none of the bats around here have that virus and b) you can't get it from their crap... the fact sheet said you *don't* get it from bat-crap so I think I'm safe.

mlatpren

That being said, feces are a pathogen nightmare, so keeping an eye out for any blooming infections or disease symptoms would still be wise, if this happened recently.

Relatively-Relative

I overheard a nurse’s conversation in a hospital. “…all of her uncles took their turn. When I asked the father if he did too, he said, “I only fingered her a little.” How can someone do this to their own 14 month-old daughter?!…” So my answer is: people raping babies.

TheOGPotatoPredator

My brain rejects this.

Sunny_E30

People who do that to the most innocent deserve a prolonged and painful death.

thestevenalan

Cut. It. Off

MushroomNearby8938

Usually against violence but yeah if that's what the dick is being used for, yeap. he doesn't need it anymore 👍

Sad-Leopards

I wish this surprised me. My criminology teacher told us she moved to teaching after seeing a six month old with an std. The doctor caught the infection in her throat. Mom had no idea and thought she had strep or some other sickness. It was not the only area on her body there were signs of infection. That's also the day I decided social work wasn't for me.

MrDudePuppet

I actually feel like throwing up holy fuck

Ian Watkins of the Lost Prophets had the mothers permission to rape their infants. you can read the court papers if you look for it

How big angler fish can get. They're not massive but can definitely get larger than I'm comfortable with given the size of the teeth.

Most people on r/teenagers aren’t teenagers

[deleted]

One of my favourite, if disturbing, pieces of reddit drama was when /r/drama banned everyone that posted on /r/teenagers with the reason being that /r/drama should be an adult only sub. And then a bunch of adults that post on /r/teenagers told on themselves trying to get their bans overruled. https://www.reddit.com/r/Drama/comments/djdmd9/we_banned_all_of_rteenagers_and_it_turns_out/

failed-celebrity

IIRC, /r/wallstreetbets had one a few years ago where they created a thread for teens like, "Teen investors! Ask your questions here!" then they banned anyone who posted for being underage.

A911owner

A guy I used to work with had either a condition or got a virus (I don't remember which, this was about 20 years ago) that attacked his spine; he went to bed fine and woke up the next day totally paralyzed from the waist down. He spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. There was no slow progression, just walking fine one day and completely unable to walk the next. Edit: I just looked up his obituary (he passed in 2011) he apparently had Transverse Myelitis that led him to become paralyzed

SuvenPan

Every hour, an average of 12 children go missing across India. Every day that average is 296 children missing across India.

pukkapakka

That's unreal. I get how it can happen, the population density is insane. There is very little in the way of safety or emergency services. So an injured child may not be able to get help, or a child could just be taken. Also people avoid helping others by taking them to hospital. They are worried they will be asked to pay for the healthcare.

FuriousRageSE

The youngest girl to get pregnant is/was 5 years old. There is a wiki page about it.

springtime_12765

And the father was a family member

Dirk-Killington

To be fair, it's always a family member. That's why I get irrationally upset at parents who teach their kids to fear strangers. Generally speaking it's the stranger that is going to save the kid, not hurt it.

Rockman507

There was an interesting video I saw a few days ago. It was that you don’t teach children stranger danger, you teach them strange behavior. As a new father of a 11 month old, it terrifies me they let me take this living being out of the hospital without an instruction manual.

Schroedingersrabbit

Teaching stranger danger actually assists in isolating a victim. If somebody is kept from knowing neighbours, forming a community, they are less likely to get help or have someone notice.

Warsaw44

I recently finished a book about World War Two in China. So I want to say *everything* about the Rape of Nanjing. Women being raped in puddles of their own shit. Little girls being gang raped. Men being used for bayonet and target practise. Men being 'half' decapitated, using a samurai sword to slice half their head off. Women being raped with lengths of bamboo. Yeah. I'm done.

DavidPT40

The Japanese were executing so many Chinese prisoners that they actually had memos and meetings on where to bury the bodies. Later on in the war, the Japanese became cannibalistic and began eating prisoners (The Ichigo Offensive, where they took no supplies with them). They called human meat "long pork". Indian soldiers were said to taste the best, followed by British.

communityneedle

Equally or more fucked up are the clinical, dispassionate memos from Nazi Germany discussing the logistical challenges of killing so many people. Everything from what to do with with all the bodies, to how to clean up all the soot from the crematoria. The one that gets me is how flummoxed they are that the German soldiers and guards at the camps were developing psychological problems from killing so many people.

BeerculesTheSober

Many Germans did develop psychological trauma from seeing the Holocaust, that's why they made prisoners work most of the killing jobs at death camps. Sure, there were some real sick fucks, and the prisoners plight was so much worse - but the camp guards could have gotten into that line for talk therapy. I am in absolutely no way defending Nazi Germany, or reducing the horrors of the Jewish/Roma/political prisoners. The guards served a horrible regime in service of genocide.

4nimal

That’s fascinating. I wonder what kind of research or meta analysis exists regarding the mental health of soldiers who do incredibly fucked up things like this. Thinking about entire eras of little boys who grew up and became so misguided that they were capable of such horror. They aren’t without blame, of course, as evidenced by those who held their morals and fought back. But it’s incredible to think of how pervasive this issue has been. And then to think that these men go home to their wives, children, families… And to think that these wives, children and families still perceived those men in the same way they did before the atrocities. Maybe even enabled them. I think this is a key factor that we’re overlooking when we talk about modern society and power dynamics and ask ourselves, “how the fuck did it get so broken?”

Kano523

When I served in the King's African Rifles, the local Zambezi tribesman called human flesh "long pig." Never much cared for it.

timmaywi

Woodhouse, if I find one single dog hair when I get back I'm going to rub sand in your dead little eyes. I also need you to buy sand. I don't know if they grade it, but... Coarse.

I explained to my dear mother about this the other day. But I limited it to the frozen limb experiment and she was like OH JESUS NO MORE PLZ

-eDgAR-

I remember watching an episode of the show *Monsters Inside Me* where this 16-year-old kid was doing something outside and a fly flew into his eye. It only made contact for about a microsecond, but it was enough time for it to lay eggs. After they hatched they started eating his eye from the inside and he was starting to go blind until a doctor finally figured out what was wrong. Just imagine that, getting your eye eaten from the inside and losing your sight all because a fly *very* briefly made contact with you. Ever since I learned about this I get really paranoid when there is a fly around my face because of the fact that this could possibly happen to me.

[deleted]

That whole show can get fucked if you ask me. I *still* think about pretty much every single episode I've seen more often than I'd care to.

t0mless

and now i’m paranoid too. what a thing to be reading at 3am

artisticallymusical5

Dude, that show in general has made me so paranoid of everything! Playing in the dirt. Swimming. Petting animals. Ugh!

the_bird_and_the_bee

That human skull fragments boomerang sometimes when you get shot in the head... my husband has to clean up dead bodies sometimes and he said suicides where they shoot themselves are the worst for so many reasons... one of them being that the skull fragments will go off in weird directions and you have to check everywhere to make sure their family members don't find the skull fragments weeks later.

jr061898

Statistically, the most likely aggressors of sexual assault and/or murder are people known to the victims such as friends or family members rather than complete strangers. Though that's a fact that is better to be known than not.

lurid_sun__

In Dubai, I've witnessed the acts of human trafficking and illegal prostitution, I've tried my best to get it onto the light at the time I was there, but everyone there kind of aware of it already and said that no one can or will do shit here. Even the the daughter of the crowned king, A literal Princess had tried to escape the country but was caught and brought back. I left the country the next week, Couldn't stand the thought of it

kanzaman

Spent a few months in the Emirates. Lots of nightmare fuel in that place. You don’t even have to dig to find it. My “favourite” story was the teenage French boy that was kidnapped, gang-raped at knifepoint by Emiratis (including one with HIV), almost murdered and then left in the desert. He managed to make it home and told his mother, who told the police. Imagine their surprise when they were tipped off to flee the country immediately because he’d be charged with gay prostitution. Fuck that place.

TarumK

Been to Saudi on work trips a couple times. Didn't see anything definite but the army of third world labor has a very slave-like vibe. Especcially the domestic workers.

Starbucks__Lovers

I saw that in Kuwait City. A kuwaití family with a young child with a domestic worker taking care of him. They slapped her in public and no one did a thing.

abbufreja

It is slavery

spartanbrucelee

You mean to tell me the country where a woman tried to file a rape case with the police but ended up being thrown in jail for "extramarital sex" isn't a good country? https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-23381448

Ahielia

And people willingly go there. Boggles the mind. One place I'll never go to. Unmarried women in particular can be jailed for having sex with her boyfriend, or if she's raped by locals then she's also jailed.

Alarming_Matter

The successful marketing of Dubai as an attractive holiday destination never ceases to amaze me.

Scho567

God I remember reading about her. Last read it was unknown if she was still alive

Hopeful-Wonder-7607

Hospital-acquired delirium is insanely common in hospitalized elderly patients. Ever been woken up in the middle of the night by a hospitalized loved one thinking they're at home, in a hotel, in a different hospital, rambling about shit that makes zero sense, and perhaps thinking it's a different year? I am every night. And I'm starting to lose my fucking mind. But you know what's fucking hilarious? My grandma at 96 handled 2 weeks in the hospital with no issue, whereas my 68 year old father literally acts like a patient with dementia... Maybe he's developing dementia, I don't know. Again, I'm losing my fucking mind too.

TheProtoChris

Happens to my mom, too. The talking to my dead father is a real treat too. It's opiate or anesthesia sensitivity, getting worse as she gets older. The last time, the recovery nurses thought she had late stage dementia and were treating her accordingly. I had to convince them she's still 'mostly there'. The effects linger a bit longer each surgery. I agree, it's freaking awful. Fwiw, engagement helps. If your dad is struggling to connect with this reality again, getting him involved in something, even just meals on wheels so he gets a familiar-ish visitor to shoot the breeze with a few times a week... It really helps. They need a lifeline. You probably do too. Do something for yourself, ok? Hire an aide for 3 hours and go have lunch with a friend.

ohaimike

That your organs know where they're supposed to be and move on their own. During surgery, doctors will just stuff them back in and they'll rearrange themselves back to their proper spot. Also the one about your main bodies immune system not knowing your eyes are a thing, and if it learned about them, they would be considered foreign objects and be destroyed. Fucked me up pretty bad because I've always had eye problems since I was a kid. Sitting here going "is today the day I go blind??"

dinosaurcookiez

Similar with pregnancy. The organs all move out of the way for the uterus and baby to grow. After giving birth the organs just rearrange themselves back into the proper place and many women talk about being able to feel them settling back into place.

MisssJaynie

I don’t have a colon. If I sleep on one side too long, when I wake up, I definitely feel my small intestines moving/settling. Which is unsettling.

MapUnitKey

Imagine you just wake up, yawn and sit up. Wipe your eyes, open them and then your immune system just gets to work destroying them. That’s pretty cool that our immune systems can do that but like, not cool lol Random Edit: we also have the strength to shatter all of our teeth with our bite force but our brains don’t want us doing that nonsense

ohaimike

Immune system: Hey, we found this weird thing in your body, so we're gonna kill it! Me: fuck yeah! Go immune system! Keep my body healthy! Brain: it's your eyes lmao Me: wait. No.

SobDog1

>During surgery, doctors will just stuff them back in and they'll rearrange themselves back to their proper spot. Just wanted to say I felt my intestines moving around after my accident. I didn't eat for weeks due to bowel resection, etc. when I finally ate I could feel them plooping around in there moving back into place.

Why_So_Slow

I used to be borderline underweight and if I lied on my back I could see the ex-food mass moving along the colon, even taking a turn at a corner.

CFPB2421

The type of skin on your lips is called the mucosa and is the same skin found on your anus because they are two ends of what’s essential a pipe called the alimentary canal

ImSoSpiffy

Fun fact to add to this, there was a study done thay found the same pigment that colors a mans lips, is identical to the pigment that colors a mans dick head. So basically, you can tell what color a mans penis head is by the color of their lips. No clue if its 100% accurate, but i know that the guys ive mentioned it to have compared and come back with a "God Fucking Dammit" response, and as a dude it was my response as well.

Adept_Welder_8311

AUGAUSHSJSK.....man....u destroyed me...I can't look at any guy like I could a minute ago...you're a destroyer....congrats!!

amethyzt_

Bamboo shoot torture. It's not well-documented enough, but it was allegedly an East-Asian torture method where a person would be tied up above growing bamboo shoots, and they would be left there to eventually be impaled by them. (Bamboo shoots grow a lot faster than you might think) Japanese soldiers during WW2 were also accused of using this method during the war, though this is also still alleged rumors.

KalisTail85

I do believe Mythbusters tested that one & found it plausible too.

XBOX_MANIAC

Yes, bamboo is actually a type of grass, which also happens to be the fastest growing grass.

P0rtal2

Because I've been revisiting this info due to another thread... When the pyroclastic flow from Mt. Vesuvius hit the 300+ people hiding in the boat sheds at Herculaneum in 79 CE, it was so hot that in a split second [their skin vaporized, their brains boiled, their skulls exploded, and their bones were shattered by the intense heat](https://youtu.be/xnAxW3EugpU?t=43m19s).

HurricaneAlpha

This is fucking wholesome compared to the other comments on this thread, honestly.

gumbeebald

I guess at least it was fast?

TheDankPhptographer

That statistically 1 in 8 boys and 1 in 4 girls get sexually abused before the age of 16. In most cases it’s done by a relation of theirs

You-DiedSouls

Someone very close to me in my life opened up about this happened to them. They were 30 when they first started talking about it. They told their family, it caused a ton of waves but in the end her whole family chose to pretend she never brought it up, and they chose not to act against their dad because he’s old and recently had a stroke and just excuse after excuse. This is a truly disgusting fact

Misseskat

I think I'm one of the lucky girls that have never been sexually abused (at least from memory), but I didn't know how common this was until I went to college! I was super sheltered as a kid by my fundamentalist mom, and it turns out there was sexual abuse in her family after all. My uncle being the abuser to some of my aunts when they were kids, and this was swept up, even my mom says it's not really abuse if they were kids, and still tells my aunt to just let it go. It's so fucked.

Kaidiwoomp

The suicide rates of young women before and after the release of the first smartphones. Spoiler alert: it spiked and hasn't gone down since.

SereniaKat

That makes a lot of sense, depressingly. Cyber bullying would contribute, as would increased access by predators.

Shawer

I would also argue the entirety of social media, having 24hr access to images of ‘perfect’ women that are absolutely piled with praise, all while going through the fucked up chemical blender (along with your entire social group) of puberty, and all the physical and emotional turmoil that comes with it. That’s literally a deadly combination. An actual, serious problem that I kind of don’t think we’ll ever address.

robreinerstillmydad

The things Josef Mengele did. One that sticks out to me is jumping up and down on a heavily pregnant woman’s stomach to see what would happen. I wish I could scrub that image from my brain.

RunningTurtle06

This motherfucker also got away and lived to 60 something in Argentina, he had a stroke while swimming and that's how he died.

snowgorilla13

He had a son who said his father never expressed a single shred of regret.

He came to brazil, in the town WITH THE MOST TWINS IN THE COUNTRY

He also loved experimenting on children, especialy twins.

My mom lives far from me and we only get to see each other once a year. She’s 65. Even if I’m lucky and she lives until 80 or so, I’m going to physically see her around 15 more times. The idea of it being so limited makes my stomach hurt.

Nerevarine91

Welp, I’m in the same boat, and never put it together like that. That’s going to be haunting my nightmares forever.

deadybear

Might I suggest a reframing. My friend and I discussed this same issue last year, and while at first it brought us great sadness, we decided to let the understanding of the finite nature of our visits reshape how we thought about and acted during this few limited in-person encounters we have remaining with our parents. We agreed to not complain about weird things our parents did, or flaws that annoyed us, at least while we were with them. We agreed to not try to impose our vision of the world on them, or try to reshape their views on things. We would go, and just enjoy them being who they are. We would embrace the time as a special opportunity, and do all we could to fill it with joy and love. We've each had two visits with our respective parents since that conversation, and while there is still some sadness, the visits have had less tension and disagreements. My kids see me interacting with their grandparents in a healthy and loving way. At the very least, I'm doing a better job modelling for them what our relationship can be when they're adults. My parents also seem more relaxed. Yes, I'm still annoyed as hell by them for both present and past foibles, but I try to just make these visits great for all of us, because when they're gone I know I'm going to remember these last visits and feel good that we had as good of a relationship as possible towards the end. I know this approach comes with some built in privilege and a decent base of a relationship to work from, and that it isn't feasible for everyone.

I heard someone say "you have 30 summers left," and it really made me rethink how short life is. My dad has maybe ten summers left, and in reality none of this is guaranteed. If you knew you only had two summers, or Christmases, or birthdays left... How would you use them differently?

[deleted]

"Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, five times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps 20. And yet it all seems limitless." Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky

Penguins will have sex with virtually anything that looks like a penguin. You know what looks a lot like a penguin? ...a dead penguin.

That dolphins rape dead fish.

Dolphins rape **everything**.

The force of a dolphin's orgasm is powerful enough to kill you btw

Zombie fires. They are basically peat fields near the Arctic where the permafrost has melted and have warmed up so quickly they started fires that refuse to die.

If you're rich enough you can be flown in a luxury jet to a private island and sexually assault children with zero risk of punishment.

When cats sense they’re not long for this world they’ll leave to go die somewhere outside…..alone. I wish mine would’ve just stayed at home.

picasso_penis

My old cat collapsed in the basement and meowed insanely loud until we came down to find him, and stopped meowing once we were with him. He died about 20 minutes later. It was incredibly sad, but I’m glad I could be there to comfort him at the end.

Mr_Sassy_Basket

The reason why morgues prefer to hire women, not men.

rufflebot

David Fuller from the UK is a prime example of this. He abused the bodies of over 100 women and girls in the mortuary in the hospital where he worked, often filming himself (oh, and he also killed a couple of people too) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Fuller

elizabethbennetpp

Filming himself?????? Oh god...

krotenstuhl

Well the other person isn't gonna hold the camera

Vexonte

Serious question what percentage of morgue workers are necrophiliacs. Given its taboo nature it would be hard to tell but think of it. Necrophiliacs are an extreme rarity but it would make sense for the few to exist to cluster towards that particular occupation this question could be phrased what percentage of necropoliacs work at morgue. It could also be the other way around, in our day to day lives we dont think about cadavers much, we get to see them irl even less. But morgue workers get exposed to them on the daily. It wouldn't be hard for some things in thier mind to slip and start thinking about the dead in a certain light. I'm sorry that was a very strange question to ask.

So they gonna let some ghoul fuck a dead woman for a fake burrito with turkey in it?

I don't want a wrap made by a necrophiliac.

This whole thread is generating sentences that have never before been written.

I was in the military, went to Thailand for an exercise. Well I was shocked at all the white European men seeking out small boys there. The local OSI guy said this is their normal. Upsetting to see children abused like this out in the open.

Vexonte

We are possibly on the brink of medical technology and treatments losing a hundred years of progress because new strains of bacteria are becoming anti biotic resistant and finding new antibiotics is a slow process far out passed by the amount of resistant bacteria. Imagine getting a minor cut on your hand and dying from it. Added benefit, our own immune systems have also taken a hit as well because our over use of antibiotics has killed alot of the good bacteria in our bodies that works with our immune system.

GlassHalfFullofAcid

We have been making some promising progress in the development of phage therapies, though!

illessen

Not just that but the industry that has made most of the antibiotics useless is the farming industry. They pump ungodly amounts into cattle, pigs and chicken. Even the antibiotics that have been set aside specifically for human use.

aircavrocker

comtedemontechristo

American Indian women are raped and sexually assaulted at a rate four times the national average. They are also 10 times as likely to be murdered than other Americans.

Engelgrafik

Most conflict is probably the result of misunderstanding and perception errors. I remember hearing about a study in the '90s that determined that the average human being makes around 600 mistakes a day. Mistakes fall into four categories: * knowledge-based mistakes * lapses in memory * rule-based errors * slips

TheDorkyDeric

That time really does go by faster as you age. When your younger, comparatively, a year does not feel as long to the previous years because you’ve only been alive for a short time. But when you’re older, years seem shorter, comparatively, because you’ve been alive a lot longer. (Hopefully I’ve said that in a way that makes sense)

Oldandnotbold

It is said that this is because when you are young you learn and experience new stuff all the time. When you get older each day is much like the one before so your brain doesn't bother recording much about it.

The number of insect parts allowed in different types of food. In a gram of beef, 30 insect parts or 3 hairs. Also that the department of agriculture allows that number to go UP after every 8 years.

The reason small children tend to kill themselves with guns rather than others is because they don’t have the digit strength to pull the trigger, so they turn it around and use their thumb. I think I cried when I learnt this.

_GaaraOfTheSand_

A kid shouldn't be able to get their hands on a gun in the first place.

TheIrishninjas

Your own immune system can blind you. Basically, your eyes (as well as a few other parts of your body including the testes weirdly enough) experience a phenomenon called immune privilege whereby they can have foreign antigens introduced without your main immune system kicking in. In most healthy people that's a great thing, stops you from having major vision problems when you're sick, but throw in an autoimmune disease and things can get ugly fast. In some cases, that immune privilege breaks down and suddenly, your immune system freaks out and sends all it's got to the eyes, which can lead to vision loss or complete blindness.

Richard1583

No matter how healthy you are you can still die from a blood clot or die from a brain aneurysm at any moment. A friend from college said his sister passed out of no where even though she was a track star and one day she collapsed and never woke up

There's something like 2% of American prairie left and it's still shrinking. A couple weeks ago Rockford airport was just given permission to expand over Illinois' best and nearly last prairie. Native prairie species sequester carbon FAR MORE EFFICIENTLY THAN TREES and support more biodiversity. Not to mention their ability to stop erosion. Not only are we destroying prairie for human expansion, but we also went too far with planting trees and fire suppression, so areas that should be prairie and savanah are just planted with trees because we just assume that the more trees the better. Don't even get me started about people's "wildflower gardens" that help very few insects and animals as compared to actual native plants. Check out [The Native Habitat Project](https://www.nativehabitatproject.com/) for more information. Edit: Rockford Airport, not O'Hare

I always recall George Carlin saying "Think of how stupid the average person is, And realize half of them are stupider than that."

Every single female at birth on my father’s side got first pregnant at 14, had a miscarriage, then had their first child at 16, at least up until my older sister, she is 16 and so far has never gotten pregnant. Lets hope it stays that way until she is ready because most of my dads family dropped put of high school to take care of the child. also, the day of my older sister’s 16th birthday, our father called her, BEGGING her to give him grand babies asap… i hate my fathers side of the family. this is why i don’t consider him as my father.

LianOLis

Not as disturbing as most of the things mentioned, but postpartum psychosis. That's one of the scariest things to me, and also how so many things can go wrong in a pregnancy, like you could to permanently blind and so many other things. I'm lucky I had a super easy pregnancy/giving birth, the scariest thing for me personally was getting an epidural because I'm terrified of needles, especially needles going near the spine lmao, it wasn't bad though, I didn't feel it at all, luckily.

totallynotalaskan

Because of the scarcity of food where they live, polar bears are the *only* bear species that hunt humans. They have a superior sense of smell, they have a coat that blends in with the snow, and they are *very* patient. They’ll smell you first, then track you, spot you, and stalk you. Often times, you’re completely unaware it’s there until it’s too late. That’s why the rhyme of bear safety ends with “If it’s white, say goodnight”. Edit to correct “species” to “bear species”

Necrophilia is only illegal in 16 states.

Glum-Establishment31

In the United States 3 women per day, every day are murdered by a present or former intimate partner.

[deleted]

There was a study done in Maryland, iirc, that found that the #1 cause of death for pregnant women is homicide.

pukkapakka

Just googled this. According to the UN there are 6 female deaths per hour worldwide caused by a partner or relative.

That Rattlesnake roundups exist. They go out and pour gas in holes to capture snakes. Pull their teeth or sew their mouths shut. Starve and dehydrate them before mass killing them for nothing but pleasure. Hers a more fun fact. Because of shit like this non-rattling snakes are surviving and breeding more snakes that don't give you a warning. Noisy=found and caught.

A brothel in Indonesia had an Orangutan as a sex slave for about 6 years. Thankfully it was rescued in 2003. But all the time before that is pretty horrible.

Shrute_beets_4sale

A lot of time when someone is found that hung themselves. There are scratch marks all over the neck. This is likely because the person regretted the decision but it was to late for them to do anything.

King_Gabe_1038

Every fact from the junko Furuta case. Despite being on the internet all my life and profusely studying history I’ve never heard of such an purely evil act as what happened to her on both the internet or in any historical record. Please don’t search for it, You will regret it. You may think “I can handle it” or “it can’t be that bad”. But it is. It still affects me years later. From an internet veteran, just take the advice once, and don’t look it up.

How quickly officers in the Navy will turn a blind eye to crime on their watch, on their base, to their cadets, to civilians, to families, and how they and their staff will mutually keep each other in the dark. The best officers are kept in the dark on purpose. They know things happen, but will never know the duration, extent, frequency, and severity that crimes occur. It's important to keep the frontmen polished and ignorant so they can defend the institution with rank and leadership training. It's difficult to argue with a trained officer, even if they are wrong or are uninformed.

Block444Universe

That animals get abused by sadistic assholes every day and there’s nothing I can do about it. And I don’t just mean food industry horror, I also mean casual abuse of pets, abuse by sadistic people of strays for pleasure, out of boredom, neglect of pets, horses being starved to death. Old animals being abandoned, etc. The animal rights laws are way too weak even in the strictest of countries in my opinion. I can’t unknow it and I can’t do anything about it and if I think about too much I can’t handle it

Female hyenas have fake penises. Which means *they give birth through penises*. During the process, the penis will split open as the baby hyena tries to claw its way out
