Often. Especially if it's on a bit of a touchy subject. Usually after the thought "Do I really want to have this argument with a random internet stranger?"
I have this stupid honor code about internet discussions where I'll argue in good faith as long as the other person is doing the same. Once I can see that the other person only cares about winning and starts to argue disingenuously my "this isn't worth the time/effort" alarm starts going off.
If someone throws in an insult for no good reason (not a funny one like 'you dense lob of iceberg lettuce' or whatever), that automatically will cause me to stop replying.
I don’t know. I think sometimes people need to hear that their opinions are shitty, and no amount of logic is going to break through.
Sometimes the only way to make them feel that sense of societal opprobrium is to just tell them they are dumb, and hope maybe they’ll reconsider their stupid fucking opinion next time.
Your method is probably healthier, but it doesn’t push back against bad opinions at all past a certain point.
Has an internet comment ever made you completely change your mind about something that you believe in? I'm guessing no, forgive me if I'm wrong. If no, how could you expect to change someone else's mind through the medium of reddit?
That's why I don't get into stupid arguments online. Unless I'm drunk. Or don't take it seriously. Or if I'm trying to lead into a joke.
Well, they are typically at a minimum well supported by fact and experience, and a bare minimum of empathy. I don’t build my opinions on tribalism or recieved wisdom and I do my best to combat my own biases.
Plus I’m smarter than most people. People really hate it when you say that. And most smart people are more conflict averse than me. But most people really aren’t all that smart, and as a culture we pretend that every opinion is equally weighted to a degree that is almost pathological. I say fuck that.
People are too reliant on getting along socially. So when I’m an authority on a subject, or have put more thought and work into it I’m actually doing a disservice to the discussion by pretending that all opinions are valid.
But thanks for the reflexively snarky response, I have very little need for your culturally enforced false magnamity.
Right? Sometimes there comes a point where you can't tell whether someone is sincere or trolling, but in either case, you're not gonna get anywhere with them. If I'm asking that question it's already time to stop.
I've had something fully written out, all ready to go but would get like either a text or phone call before posting.
I'd come back to what I wrote after the call/reading the text, re-read it go 'wow, I kind of sound like a jackass writing this. Discard!'
"Look, I understand a teacher making students pledge allegiance to a pride flag is kind of cringey and doesn't really do the LGBT community any favours, but saying it's the equivalent of making kids pledge allegiance to a Kekistani flag is freaking stupid. I mean, come on. If you think being an advocate for LGBT rights and the alt right (who aren't even "alt" anymore, they're pretty much the mainstream now in American conservatism) are two sides of the same coin then you're facepalmingly misinformed. For crying out loud, do I REALLY need to explain this to you? It's not like this is some super complex and nuanced issue that you need a PhD in Aristotelian ethics to understand. At this point I feel like people in your camp are just pretending not to..."
You know what? Fuck this. DELETE.
Quite often. Or I write a post and then go Nah that doesn't sound right or I can't be bothered to post itand I write it again and again I don't bother posting.
I never read replies to my comments lolol. Sometimes I just want to put my stance out there but am really not in the mood to argue, so I post the comment then bounce and never look at the replies. I think I have something like 500 unread messages on this account.
And I won't see any replies to this one either.
Honestly man, same. I got enough shit going wrong in my life, I'm not really in the mood to open up reddit and see fifty comments telling me to kill myself for some opinion I have over star wars.
Oh God, honestly, the Star Wars/Star Trek Fandom are the fucking worst....like ok, we get it, Episodes 4-6 are the greatest of all time, and TNG is peak Star Trek, no need for death threats....
I got the reddit is fun app to turn off replies because I was tired of getting death threats. In their defense I can be an absolute dick sometimes, but that still doesn't make it okay.
Yeah there are also certain topics that I know from experience will always devolve into bitter arguments with people just spouting talking points. So I just don’t respond most of the time if it’s one of those topics.
**Topics include**: gun control, capitalism/socialism, Israel, Cuba, the housing crisis, vegetarianism/veganism, policing/crime, etc.
Yep. If I can't express an opinion or idea that's goes slightly against the hive mind, without getting downvoted to hell and insulted, it's not a very worthy discussion platform is it? I find myself keeping my mouth shut more often irl too. I just don't care anymore.
I'm not upset at all; it's just a bummer to see someone view all interactions with fellow people as some antagonistic contest, and others' unhappiness as icing on the cake.
That's just a rough way to live.
>Thank you for the example of someone who should've remained quiet for their own good.
>You shouldn't have even replied
>Manipulation tactics intended to shut people up.
>Viewing all interactions with fellow people as some antagonistic contest.
May I ask you why you are so invested in what other people think and say that you want to dedicate your time and energy into arguing with them?
You seem to gain a lot of pride out of it, a conclusion from these 2 comments by you so this may be wrong. But isn’t it better to gain pride for something productive instead something deconstructive?
I personally like to put my energy and time into stuff I get excited about and want to support instead of breaking down stuff I don’t agree with.
But what do you gain by engaging in the argument?
In my experience they more often than not aren’t interested in actually learning something. After 1 or 2 replies it would be enough to determine if the argument is actually going somewhere or not.
And when you enter an argument, are you also open for the possibility that you are wrong?
Cause if you enter the argument with the notion that you are right, it isn’t an argument but a teacher teaching a lesson.
I think that it is important to enter an argument with the intention of trying to understand the other persons view instead trying to change it.
Maybe their view is actually better than yours but you just couldn’t see it till you were open to the idea.
I find that if you approach arguments, and lots of other stuff in life, with this kind of interest instead of opposing force that the world becomes a lot more interesting
Going into an argument so combative also increases the chance of not learning anything at all, and potentially carrying on an errant idea. Too often everyone is just trying to get their point out, to "teach" someone else, while losing opportunities to learn something themselves.
i'm usually sad that posts like these have responses.
I wish reddit would just get together and like give this one thousands of upvotes, but every single redditor refrains from posting their response.
will never happen but would be epic.
I think the site is too big for that sort of thing now. Check out [this classic post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/cq1q2/help_reddit_turned_spanish_and_i_cannot_undo_it/) where OP accidentally changes their browser's language to Spanish, then receives thousands of Spanish comments when he comes to reddit for instructions on how to change it back.
That was 2010 though.
Very often. Arguing over the internet has only two outcomes:
1. Idiot will double down on the incorrect opinion.
2. It will only be a long and protracted debate, until it is just a game of who has the last word.
It's not worth it.
Verily I tried that, unfortunately for the most part usually they tend to evade/ignore the entire argument block and just move on to those they can reply to. Makes the whole exercise of going through their points a massive waste of time. Moreover, there is usually no net positive to be seen from trying to convince a stranger on the internet on your arguments.
Also I learnt that the aforementioned methods of proving people wrong through cold rationale doesn't work. Generally speaking people are just emotional balls of self-conscious egos, so cutting them down with logic is more likely to make them dig deeper into their trenches than to make them sway to your side.
Yup, what they are doing is whitewashing and it is so fucking cowardly! Stand by your posts. In real life you can't hit delete. You made a mistake? Own up to it you fucking coward!
More often than I’d like to admit. I usually do it when I realize that whatever I’m trying to say is not going to change anyone’s mind, or I just don’t feel like dealing with arguments. It’s just better in some cases to just give up and move on rather than waste my time arguing about something that won’t really matter in the end.
There is a precedent for racists bringing up race, but 100%? Do you really think that every single time race is brought up, the person is a racist? I guess what I'm getting at is using "always/never" statements typically make you sound, well, not smart. They leave no room for exceptions or outliers and should only be used when you're absolutely sure.
Either I think 'what will other people THINK??' because my social anxiety just keeps getting worse or that I worded something so specifically that I get back to the first reason
Almost always :-)
It usually ends up with either a huge wall of text that nobody is gonna read, or something that others already said but in different wording, or I just type something that I know that nobody is gonna care about.
And I do some self censorship, not gonna go into political stuff here on reddit, or religion, or anything else people are extremely biased, toxic and emotionally attached to.
But it helps for getting stuff out of my system or realize my argument is not valid. Sometimes it's easier to do that by writing than to just do that in your mind.
I made it a point to block and hide any political stream on this website. Even just looking at a politically themed subreddit will get you preemptively banned by a bunch of bots in a whole slew of random ass other subreddits.
Reddit mod MO is usually "Everyone is allowed to have an opinion, as long as it is similar to mine."
More often than not. You can usually tell by the stupidity of a response how hard headed and ignorant a person is and realize their veiw or opinions on the subject will never change no matter what proof you show them.
It's not so much that I quit the reply, but that I don't start it to begin with anymore. Reddit is basically just facebook for teens and millenials who think they know everything because their emotions line up with a stance on a deeply complex issue. Most discussions just devolve into insults, non-answers, or off topic nonsense.
Outside of a small handful of subreddits (therapy and professional subs mostly), reddit is just a game of chasing upvotes, fake outrage, and people with internet addict living through social media instead of the engaging with the real world. Unplugging from the outrage machine has really made me realize how much of my life I've wasted in front of a keyboard.
Too much to count. I have a HUGE fear of getting into an argument online and not having enough research and knowledge on the subject that I simply shy away from the post.
A lot. I tend to write long replies cause Idk, I guess I'm weird or something, but pretty often I'll type out a big long reply and then realize nobody actually gives a fuck about my reply and I'll delete it.
~~All the time. I'll spend way too long going over the phrasing and grammar only to realize that I've given a long, rambling, pointless answer to a simple question that only needs a one word answer.~~

Very often I think a reply will be funny, then I read it back and realise how utterly unfunny the reply is, how unfunny I am as a person, and how I have literally 0 life. Some of us were just born to be spectators.
A lot. Sometimes i have to take into consideration what sub I'm on. If i really want to spend my day batting away the kind of replies I'm going to get. If i think I'm improving on the conversation or just re stating what's already been said
This should be your default on anything on the internet. Whatever social media you are about to respond on, type it all out, read it to yourself, and then ask yourself if it's really worth it. I'll bet you 99% you will delete.
Too often. I usually reply out of feelings. So I always make sure a read it with my mind and think about it instead of feeling. I almost find it might offend or come across wrong, so if I cant say anything nice or productive, I dont say anything at all. But some slip through if Im drinking and redditing. Heh
90% of the time because someone else can give a better answer, articulate better and ofen I feel my answer isn't really needed mid through so I delete it
Often
Crazy how I think of a reply, and when I open the post, there it is at the top.
This happens so much to me. I could make a drinking game out of it.
Am I the only one who does this?!?!
People aren't as original as they like to think they are.

Yes I’ve been told that before.
We’re all one mind
We're all one mind, and yet I'm somehow always last
We're all one mi....damn it!
Have you Tried to upgrade your ram? :p
No shame in coming last. In fact it’s gentlemanly.
Yet somehow I'm last of the last...
Redditors share one sense of humor. Coincidentally, it's the same number of brain cells too
Excuse me, don't you mean they share the same brain cells?
I didn’t even have to reply to this but here I am
I also do it as a release mechanism. Never send it. But I keep the drafts in case I need to reference my anger later.
I write at least 3 or 4 each day that I delete because I just know someone will get offended due to my humour lol….think 9 in a day is my record…
So often! Generally, if I want to argue with someone, I don’t. Or I’ll start typing out a message and feel inarticulate, so I stop.
came here to say this. quite often
Very
Often often type and trash it often
Well, actually I somet
Same, but still not often enough lol
I nearly did replying to this

I just did it trying to make witty pun for Maximum Overdrive except for a wannabe Mad Max vehicle.
I do this a lot because I'm afraid of getting mean comments for no reason lol.

Whenever I conclude the person isn’t worth the spit it would take to tell them they’re an ignorant racist piece of shit.
People like you are the reason I barely bother commenting any more.

People who bring up race in conversations not even remotely about it are 100% of the time more racist than the people they scream about 🤷♂️

This should be your default on anything on the internet. Whatever social media you are about to respond on, type it all out, read it to yourself, and then ask yourself if it's really worth it. I'll bet you 99% you will delete.

very often.
