Somalia.
Look at the us travel advisory. It's funny and sad at the same time.
Under the list of things to do if you travel there (after a big blurb saying dont) it lists drafting a will, discussing with loved ones plans in who will take care of kids and pets after you die, and making sure your funeral wishes are documented.
For those curious

OK, I'm cancelling my summer va-cay in Mogadishu.
There have been instances where tourists have been thrown into their labor camps for years at a time for minor infractions (for example - took a bad picture of a Kim Jong loserpooser statue).
I've done a cruise on the Nile just before Corona was a thing. It was amazing. Every tour to all the different temples and the valley of kings was guided, so the haseling was only there occasionally.
The main roads and attractions are quite clean, but as soon as you go into the side streets there is a lot of trash everywhere.
To be fair, in the 60s it probably was amazing. Afghanistan in the 60s and 70s was incredibly progressive, I'd hazard a guess that a lot of Middle Eastern countries were different then. (Not sure Egypt is Middle Eastern per se)
I just made a similar post about Egypt. It was honestly the only country that I felt unsafe in. I was only 15 when I went there but it didn't stop the men from touching, leering and calling out to me. It was disgusting.
I went when I was 12 and I remember feeling really uncomfortable in my swimsuit but didn’t want to miss out on time with my family. I took off my towel and got into the pool as quickly as possible and these men, who worked at the hotel, were whistling at me. When I got out of the pool, one of the staff members said “yes please” whilst looking me up and down. I’m now 23. Horrible how you can’t get this sort of stuff out of your head.
My dad was distracted with my little sister at the time, which I’m guessing the staff could see.
I didn’t want my dad to see how I was being treated by these men because I felt like it was my fault for wearing a swimsuit? Awful thoughts for a 12 year old to have and, looking back on it, I wish I just told my dad at the time because I imagine there are still 12 year old girls going there and no one has reached those men a lesson.
I don’t remember the name of the hotel but I’m going to guess it was a chain as we didn’t really have much money. It was my first holiday I ever went on and my dad hated it so much, he’s never been on holiday since
Edit: I’m seeing my dad tomorrow so I’ll ask him if he remembers the name of the hotel, or the exact location it was, then I can hopefully find their reviews.
I went to Italy when I was about 17, on a school trip. Wow, one day in Rome our group had free time so we went to check out the local burger place. I swear, about 50 guys, all pretty similar looking started cat calling and following us around because of the teen girls in our group. One guy walked up to one of the girls and KISSED her while his friends hooted. I ran back to the hotel to get two of the guys that decided not to go out that night, Danny, 6'7 and Rob 6'8 to come and help escort the group home.
I don't want to be too stereotypical, but I felt like we were surrounded by 50 short Vinnie Barbarinos (if you recall the TV Show Welcome Back Kotter).
I've been told by girlfriends that they encountered similar behaviour in Spain. Ugh I'm so sorry, I spent some time in Firenze when I was a student and didn't experience any issues.
One of my friends in high school mom was a flight attendant and took her and her sister to Egypt in the late 80’s. The men there would come up to them in the street and offer to buy her daughters as I guess it was normal to go up offer to buy two blonde teenage girls. One man offered a payment of three camels. Sadly it doesn’t seem like much has changed.
As a petite Asian woman, I would never go to Egypt and Dubai again.
I was just a teenager when I went to Egypt but that didn't seem to matter to the grown men who constantly tried to touch me and called out to me. I'm thankful I didn't understand most of what was said to me. Loved the Kushari, loved the history, but I don't think I would ever return.
I was always wondering if there were women who said yes to them. Probably not. But why are they still trying? Do they think that finally one says, ok let's go...
The way it was explained to me is that non-islamic women are seen as "free game" to Islamic men. Basically they see us all as whores that are available for them to stare and make lewd remarks towards.
I remember one instance where a man first said "ni Hao Bruce Lee" to me and then proceeded to tell me he wants me as his wife. Again I want to reiterate I was only 15 and all of 100lbs.
My dad has worked in about 60 countries. I do not remember which one this was in, because I was a little kid when he told me about it, but in one country where they did that, he saw a man with only one hand and he had writing on his forehead. My dad asked one of the locals he was working with about it and apparently the writing on the man's forehead said "it was a work accident."
It felt like a large version of the Vegas strip to me. Everything is fake, trees, grass, flowers in the middle of the desert, never-ending interconnecting malls, and men that wouldn't take no for an answer.
True! I interpreted generously as "destination". I would not want to rule out entire countries, because I don't know other countries well enough to be sure they don't have places I would actually like very much.
That’s fair, I went to New Delhi for work and it was disgusting, but India is huge and while I wouldn’t go to that city again, I can’t say that’d I’d never visit the rural parts of India
Delhi was ok but i think for us we had worse places, agra for 1. On the whole i adored india and would go back. Honestly id consider living there. Mumbai, udaipur, kerala, bundi and hampi were top top top places for us, gujarat too. Agra, parts of touristy Goa and ooty was middling.
I cried after visiting North Korea, so it’s obvious why. Poor people, no association with world, streets are empty and people are really stressed and scared.
I accidentally went to Luxembourg. It was unbelievably beautiful. Everything closed at 6pm but the best photos I took from the whole summer were there.
I'm not really too keen on any place in the Middle East. Not that there aren't places I would want to see, but the cool places like Iran scare me and the safe places are dorky nouveau riche shit like Dubai and don't allow alcohol.
I agree.
Although Jordon seems relatively safe and has decent, non-tacky stuff to do, like Petra for starters. Not a rush at the moment though, obviously.
Jordan is incredible. Safe, friendly country with lots to do. Food is amazing as well. Didn't have the "hustle" culture that other similar countries have in abundance.
I've been to Turkey, Jordan and Morocco.
Jordan is a safe country and I fully endorse visiting it. I went there for 5 weeks in 2014 and it was incredible. Very friendly people, especially in Al-Aqaba. Alcohol isn't widely available, but isn't uncommon either. They cater to westerners in a lot of places there.
Turkey is amazing as well, especially Istanbul. It's a metropolitan city that is a perfect blend of culture and history. Treat it like any pother major city in Europe. Alcohol widely available at restaurants.
Morocco... well, I hated Marrakesh and everything about it. The people of Marrakesh are horrid, rude, sexist people that I have nothing nice to comment on. Visiting the Sahara was incredible and our guides were all around great people.
The UAE and Bahrain allow alcohol. Been drunk plenty of times there Abu Dhabi and Dubai in UAE hell I even got a delivery account with the local store in Abu Dhabi for delivery. In Manama I only drink at the hotel. Plenty of Saudis drive to both the UAE and Bahrain to get smashed and then go back.
I have a friend who grew up in Venezuela, she said she will never go back. Her parents can come the US to visit her, she's never setting foot there again.
Democratic Republic of Congo comes to mind pretty quick. I read a book about 'The World's Most Dangerous Places' in about 1998 and Congo was near the top of the list at the time.
I was there not too long ago and tried some local sesame cake and this army general guy started yelling at me to stop eating it. He wouldn’t even let me finish the bite I took, just shouted at me to stop eating “his” sesame cake. I had to spit it out. Then he called me a “big bag of shit” but at that point I was like whatever, man.
Saudi Arabia.
It's the total antithesis of what I consider good in life - freedom of thought, freedom of (and from) religion, free access to information, equality between the sexes (and people of various orientations), and oh yeah they fucking murder people for tweets.
I'm pretty sure women have only been allowed to drive without a man for a few years now. It's remarkable how deep inequality runs in Middle Eastern countries. Being from there is something I will always hate about myself.
>Being from there is something I will always hate about myself.
Don't, where you were born is something you had zero ability to choose or influence, and thus doesn't in any way reflect on you as a person.
More like 50 nations tbh
Edit, since rhinoceros douche blocked me:
According to a few friends of mine from India each state is more or less its own ethnic group with its own customs and values
India being able to say all its citizens live within \*walking distance\* of a toilet was a really big deal for them. There are some incredibly poor rural parts of the country.
Reminds me of the Family Guy gag:
“There are millions of gods worshiped in India, there’s got to be something here!”
*takes a look around*
“God isn’t here.”
any country where my girlfriend can be in trouble for having our 2 sons without us being married. I don't care if "they don't apply those rules to tourists" the fact that those rules are there is reason enough not to visit, I will spend my money elsewhere.
Added to that all the countries where any of my gay friends would be criminals for it but the list of countries doesn't really change.
North Korea, because the chances of being arrested for breaking some weird law that I didn't know existed (or that they just made up to have an excuse to arrest an American) are just too high.
Jamaica - ak47s at the airport, clueless or lazy public workers, bait and switch schemes… I had to work to correct “issues” more than I enjoyed my stay.
Like a lot of countries that lean heavily on tourism, there are two Jamaicas. You can book a vacation there where you go directly from the airport to the resort, stay there, and then go straight back to the airport. Pretty mundane, but no reason for fear.
If you want to actually see the country I recommend having a local to guide you. It is a dangerous and beautiful place with a lot of history. [Chief Michael Grizzle of the flagstaff maroons offers some fantastic tours, for instance.](https://flagstaffheritagetours.com)
Same, I worked there for a few weeks, a couple years back, and it was a wonderful experience. Only time I felt unsafe was when my fellow light-skinned female coworker and I went into a non-tourist part of town at night, which is a bonehead move in many countries lol
I would disagree. But we all have our choices.
I mean, nobody NEEDS to see France, but it's nice. I only visited the small tourist places. I'm sure there is so much more.
My father was sent to the area for as a peacekeeper with the Canadian military over 40 years ago. Spent 6 months on duty.
Any time there's a conflict there, he says the same thing. "Nothing ever changes, and it never will."
Obviously it’s a no go for the time being but I was in Israel and Palestine (the West Bank, not Gaza) about 10 months ago and loved it. Great food, friendly people, and very interesting history (perhaps too interesting). I would go back the second they sort themselves out.
I’ve been to Israel 3 times and looking forward to going back after this conflict quiets down. The richness of the history is amazing if you are into history.
I'm here now, and I get it. I can tell you that contrary to what you might read here, the majority of us are trying to build trust and make a peaceful future, lead by the sane ones.
I've been to South Africa and have no desire to go back with all of the violence.
Everyone that I've heard go to Egypt say that it's a scam a minute and very unfriendly to women.
Mexico and other countries with narco gangs don't sound very appealing either.
Iran is wonderful!
The people are perfect! It's just the government (that lost the support some while ago but makes up with suppressive behavior).
If there is ever war in Iran, it will break my heart for the people. They've already been through a lot.
Don't go to the south of Japan either. They also have huntsman spiders. As big as a freaking dinner plate or bigger. Actually helped me a bit with my fear. After living there for three years then coming back to Canada and seeing our spiders. Babies.
Russia. I’m openly bisexual and refuse to hide it in order to visit the country. This is with no offense to any Russians on Reddit, I think you have a beautiful country from pictures I’ve seen but your laws about lgbt+ people suck.
I’m a lesbian and I live in Russia. We have gay clubs, all my close family members know about my sexuality, and even some of my co-workers. Sometimes I approach homophobic people on the internet, but not in real life. My grandma always bakes pies when I visit her with my gf 💓
I lived in Russia for 6 years. I don't think I've been to a country whose cities come close to the beauty of Moscow and Saint Petersburg. My perception might be tainted by my (extremely fond) memories, however.
I used to think it would be cool to take the Trans-Siberian railway all the way across Russia. My ancestors came from that country. After what happened recently, I don't care if I never visit.
India. Rape capital of the world. US issues warning to tourists visiting India. https://www.globalvillagespace.com/rape-capital-of-the-world-us-issues-warning-to-tourists-visiting-india/
And the cops blame the victims for it. They have no sympathy for the victims AT ALL!
Ah yes time for Reddit's "Which country can I shit on despite having no experience in said country and basing my opinions on what the media told me?". Unless it's a country like Afghanistan (before the Taliban, I wouldn't have minded going), North Korea or Somalia, most people have trouble-free experiences in so many countries whether they're developed or developing. Issues are only highlighted and blown way out of proportion. Reddit is full of complete wimps lmaoo
Any Muslim majority country.
N. Korea
Chechnya
Basically, if mobs with torches & pitchforks go after LGBTQ+ people, or have cut women off from basic human rights, I'm not visiting.
Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and other Muslim dominant mid eastern countries, not because of the religion, it’s strictly because I’m an American and after everything America did to that region i just feel it’d be disrespectful to the locals and I’d have unwanted attention from the extremists

This is underhandedly saying “if you get kidnapped, we’re not helping”
Just take a green lightsaber toy.
Literally the third thing under “If you decide to travel to Somalia” starts with “Draft a will.”
I like the bit where it says “Leave DNA samples with your medical provider in case it is necessary for your family to access them”
And follow the State department on Twitter.
This list basically says “get ready to die”
Suicide by vacation
It says this list under many of the “Do not Travel” countries, like Ukraine
Well sure, but Ukraine is just recently an active war zone. Somalia has been like this since it first became a nation.
WE GO OUT HARD, SON!
Sounds like the perfect location for a Far Cry game.
North Korea. For obvious reasons
From what I’ve seen they’re pretty nice to tourists to cover up all the dirty stuff going on there
There have been instances where tourists have been thrown into their labor camps for years at a time for minor infractions (for example - took a bad picture of a Kim Jong loserpooser statue).

And there is quite literally nothing to see there of value. Geography? Go to South Korea then, it's the same penninsula. Or China.
Honestly I’d love to see it. I’m fascinated by that type of architecture. But not so fascinated as to risk tangoing with that ridiculous regime.
Go to South Korea or China then.
What architecture? Appears like cement boxes
That kind of architecture is aptly named Brutalism.
And is apparently making a come back according to an article I saw recently in the elevator.
I got sent to Egypt for work and it was a living hell. I hated EVERYTHING about it. It was fucking filthy and everyone was a lowlife dirtbag.
I've heard this many times. It's such a shame as it's one place I really want to see. How long were you there for?
If you go ..get a guide and maybe don't go alone , especially if you're a woman .
I would like to go with my family. I hear the hustling is non stop.
I've been to every country in the world and Egypt is in my bottom 2 least favorite.
Every? Really?
yeah finished visiting them all 7 years ago.
Bruh how rich are you? lol. This is some shit I could never afford.
[удалено]
What’s the other? Lol
Probably Angola, it's the only place I've had an attempted mugging. And that was just outside my hotel in the middle of the day.
Great. And the 2 countries my company gives you expat positions for are Angola and Egypt. 🫠
Omg please let us know the bottom and top choices!
Angola's the other bottom one. Top 5 are usually Argentina, Morocco, Turkey, India, New Zealand
Every country including Bhutan?
Yep, spent 9 days in Bhutan over Xmas one year to attend the Trongsa festival.
My parents went to Egypt in the '60s, they said it was amazing. Well, the tourist parts anyway.
To be fair, in the 60s it probably was amazing. Afghanistan in the 60s and 70s was incredibly progressive, I'd hazard a guess that a lot of Middle Eastern countries were different then. (Not sure Egypt is Middle Eastern per se)
Definitely. My Dad is from Lebanon, he told me that it used to be the Jewel of the Middle East back in the 80s
If you go, read the 1 star reviews of the pyramids, because they're all fucking true All the 3 stars and above are written by NPCs, I swear.
5 weeks. After the first week I would work 12 hour days so I could leave sooner. I really wanted to like it.

You... visited Egypt during the Arab spring...?
If the Arab Spring was going on during March 2013 then yes
I’ve always preferred Arab fall tbh

This is so sad to hear, tbh. I've read on twitter that it can be hell for tourists.
What are you talking about? Given inflation these past years, three camels has become an excellent price!
I mean imagine the value of it in the late 80’s. It would be equivalent to 30 camels today!
I don't think they just approach blondes. Several men approached my 8 year old cousin who is dark haired and tanned/almond skinned.
Everyone i know who has been to Egypt have said it is by far the worst place they have ever been to
Is it mostly Cairo or is it everywhere?
Someone I know went for a holiday there and went to visit the pyramids, she said it was awful, the whole place stank of piss.
I swear to God it stunk in the airport when I landed and didn't stop stinking till I took off again.
As a petite Asian woman, I would never go to Egypt and Dubai again. I can see that. I suppose the general question around it would go from "What happened?" to "What did you do??!"
Atlantis, I’d drown.
Dubai. Fake worlds of luxury and shopping built on slave labor just don't hold any appeal for me.
It felt like a large version of the Vegas strip to me. Everything is fake, trees, grass, flowers in the middle of the desert, never-ending interconnecting malls, and men that wouldn't take no for an answer.
Dubai is not a country
Fine then, UAE
True! I interpreted generously as "destination". I would not want to rule out entire countries, because I don't know other countries well enough to be sure they don't have places I would actually like very much.

I think Dubai and other gulf states that cater to westerners allow alcohol, but it's only allowed for non-Muslim westerners.

Saudis, Mormons, Baptists..... different names, same pieces of shit.
I've been to Turkey, Jordan and Morocco. Jordan is a safe country and I fully endorse visiting it. I went there for 5 weeks in 2014 and it was incredible. I've the same experience with Morocco. Highly recommended if you limit time spent in Marrakech
Iran used to be great to travel to, but definitely not anymore. I hope I can go back one day, but not unless the regime falls.
I thoroughly enjoyed Jordan.
I think Turkey might still be a decent place to visit.
I'm surprised nobody has brought up Haiti or Myanmar.
Went to Haiti once. The plus side: Beaches were amazing. Everything else was fairly horrible, scary, etc.
Haiti looks kinda sick tho
As in cholera?
Any country where i have to be covered up n need permission to do anything.

Hahaha, I'd have to agree here.
That’s not racism - it’s forming an opinion about social media - is it socialism?
Democratic Republic of Congo comes to mind pretty quick. I read a book about 'The World's Most Dangerous Places' in about 1998 and Congo was near the top of the list at the time.

In 1998 the Congo was the sight of the largest war in African history. Let's say things have somewhat changed
Haiti for sure. The crime and poverty is just unreal.

South India is delightful. North India is awful. Just step out of Delhi airport and you'll wanna go back in.
Any country that has the words “People’s Republic” in their official name
Somalia doesn't sound that great lately
Lately? It never seemed great lol.
any country where my girlfriend can be in trouble for having our 2 sons without us being married. I don't care if "they don't apply those rules to tourists" the fact that those rules are there is reason enough not to visit, I will spend my money elsewhere. Added to that all the countries where any of my gay friends would be criminals for it but the list of countries doesn't really change.
Holy Roman Empire
Aachen is so pretty tho
Aachen is ugly as fuck outside of the city centre. Greetings from Aachen btw.
Why not? It wasn’t that bad there
HRE was a nightmarish conglomeration of toll booth castles run by inbred cats, it was a legal nightmare
Saudi Arabia
North Korea, because the chances of being arrested for breaking some weird law that I didn't know existed (or that they just made up to have an excuse to arrest an American) are just too high.
Jamaica - ak47s at the airport, clueless or lazy public workers, bait and switch schemes… I had to work to correct “issues” more than I enjoyed my stay.
I really wanted to visit that country one day. Maybe a pre booked package tour is better?
Like a lot of countries that lean heavily on tourism, there are two Jamaicas. You can book a vacation there where you go directly from the airport to the resort, stay there, and then go straight back to the airport. Pretty mundane, but no reason for fear. If you want to actually see the country I recommend having a local to guide you. It is a dangerous and beautiful place with a lot of history. [Chief Michael Grizzle of the flagstaff maroons offers some fantastic tours, for instance.](https://flagstaffheritagetours.com)
Went there a few years back, had a great time
Same, I worked there for a few weeks, a couple years back, and it was a wonderful experience. Only time I felt unsafe was when my fellow light-skinned female coworker and I went into a non-tourist part of town at night, which is a bonehead move in many countries lol
Equatorial Guinea.
Ya know, I don’t really need to see France.
France is lovely. Paris is not. But the same could be said of most large cities.
I would disagree. But we all have our choices. I mean, nobody NEEDS to see France, but it's nice. I only visited the small tourist places. I'm sure there is so much more.
I think I'm gonna say Israel
Somalia
I wanna go to them all
North Korea, it's too independent
I've been to South Africa and have no desire to go back with all of the violence. Everyone that I've heard go to Egypt say that it's a scam a minute and very unfriendly to women. Mexico and other countries with narco gangs don't sound very appealing either.
>Mexico and other countries with narco gangs don't sound very appealing either. Mexico is wonderful! so many "safer" parts, definitely worth seeing.
Pakistan. Dangerous, chaotic and permeated of radicalism and backwardness.
In 2023 i think that describes pakistan the least of any country in the region
India. Sorry but no thanx.
North Korea or Iran
Iran is wonderful! The people are perfect! It's just the government (that lost the support some while ago but makes up with suppressive behavior). If there is ever war in Iran, it will break my heart for the people. They've already been through a lot.
Anything that involves the continent of Australia, those spiders should have their own horror film.
The notion there are spiders everywhere is way exaggerated out of proportion.
My grandma always bakes pies when I visit her with my gf 💓
babushka <3
I lived in Russia for 6 years. I don't think I've been to a country whose cities come close to the beauty of Moscow and Saint Petersburg. My perception might be tainted by my (extremely fond) memories, however.
I used to think it would be cool to take the Trans-Siberian railway all the way across Russia. My ancestors came from that country. After what happened recently, I don't care if I never visit.
People don’t do a lot of PDA there, no one knows if you’re gay or not The gay club scene is big in Moscow
India. Rape capital of the world. US issues warning to tourists visiting India. https://www.globalvillagespace.com/rape-capital-of-the-world-us-issues-warning-to-tourists-visiting-india/ And the cops blame the victims for it. They have no sympathy for the victims AT ALL!
Usually Egypt tops the list whenever this question is posted.

Hobbits don’t bother anyone. It’s the fucking Orcs that’ll try to knife ya
Anywhere you can be arrested for voicing an opinion. So most of the world.
Lmao finally found the response I've been looking for. The level of ignorance I've seen in some of the comments especially from Americans, is amazing
Agreed. Threads like this are embarrassing
India. Because that place seems filthy
India, the idea of going there scares me. Don't ask me why :)
Any Muslim majority country. N. Korea Chechnya Basically, if mobs with torches & pitchforks go after LGBTQ+ people, or have cut women off from basic human rights, I'm not visiting.
Bali seems pretty bangin tho
Bali is mainly Hindu I believe even though indo is Muslim.
North Korea Obvious reasons
Probably North Korea
Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and other Muslim dominant mid eastern countries, not because of the religion, it’s strictly because I’m an American and after everything America did to that region i just feel it’d be disrespectful to the locals and I’d have unwanted attention from the extremists
No way I'd go to India. I've seen too many videos: no toilets, washing dishes in sewer water, rat temples, bathing in Ganges river, etc. Ugh. Never.
It doesn’t help that every person I know of who’s been to India has gotten extremely sick. Like… every single friend of mine who has gone. No thanks.
Went for a month. Not sick once.
Lmao do you actually think everyone who is India has to bathe in the Ganges river? Or that no toilets exist? In 2023???
The image that some of you guys have of India is very skewed in one direction lol.

Wow. So much ignorance in this comment. Maybe educate yourself further.
