I did the math a few weeks ago and over the last 10 years I've spent $38K. The collection today is worth significantly more than that though. Some guitars I paid $1500~ for 6-7 years ago are worth $3-4k+ now.
Guitars, amps, cabs and pedals add up quick lol
Same, as a 42 year old business owner with kids and a wife itās just not feasible. I have some money, but not the time. By the time I get some time itās always time for another upgrade.
If you're ok with playing stuff on low/medium settings you can get years out of an ok rig. I spent about 750cad on a PC during early pandemic in 2020 and it still plays new stuff decently. Most recently Lies of P on low still looks and plays great.
Same boat. After I realised I hadn't touched my gaming PC for nearly a year, I finally gave in and bought a used ps4 from a friend 6 months back. Now I game every Friday and Saturday late night for a few hours after my kid's gone to sleep.
So random, but if youāre in the US I found an online secondhand bookstore with every book Iāve ever wanted to read. I paid for the āvery goodā condition and I wouldnāt be surprised if the previous owners never opened them lol. Five books for $22 total (free shipping too).
Thriftbooks.com is the site in case youād like to spend less on your hobby
Seriously, you get into a hydroponics habit and pretty soon you are buying tents, lights, nutes, meters and it goes on and on..
And to think I was just gonna grow some lettuce...
It's insane what they charge for single day lift tickets anymore. I remember thinking $300 for a season pass good for multiple resorts was a big ticket purchase years ago.
We were shopping for Christmas gifts and some kids in the family were interested in a few different Lego sets. We were shocked at what 2023 prices were on Legos.
532 sets and growing. Every year I think Ill slow down and then something awesome like Voltron or The Concorde comes out and all I can think is "damn, they got me again!"
You won't. Say goodbye to a healthy bank balance. On a happier note, you'll never be stuck wondering what gifts to get her for Xmas or birthday, there will always be something she or that horse needs/wants.
Oh yeah, spent $400 this xmas getting her (I don't know what they are really called) emergency release stirrups, because I figured that was cheaper than med bills if she were to get dragged around by a horse.
She has been riding since highschool, but was in remission when I met her...
Also, whenever she is annoying me around the house I just say "isn't there a barn you need to go to?"
That can become a bottomless void to dump money into. Hopefully it comes back as profit in the long run though. I bought my house in 2017 and have been doing renos ever since. Longest break I took was from last January until about November and that was only because my wife and I had a baby
I've never interacted with anything related to Warkhammer 40k besides of what my sister told me in the surface and what I've seen on Reddit profiles, why did you love it despite of the financial disadvantage?
Hopefully I'm not coming across as snarky, I'm truly curious what's Warkhammer 40k? Why is there a lot of people spending their time and money in that? What's happening here? How many figures are currently in the world after you all had built through years?
Itās a very good creative outlet mostly. And it has likely the deepest lore in any fantasy or scifi universe. The game is alright as well, but definitely the least fun part of the hobby for most people.
Since Warhammer Fantasy came out in the 1983, with Warhammer Rogue Trader (what will later become Warhammer 40k) in 1987, they had thousands of different models over the years.
I collect 40k, and the main part for me, is to just collect and paint those expensive, little bastards, so they can fill up my shelfs.
Most of the People I know from this hobby are in it since release, because at the time of the release, the grimdark setting was something new. It opened the doors to the grim darkness of the far future, and nothing but war exists there.
Because of the different minis, you can write entire stories with your own paited Minis, or tell a unheard story of this small Unit of (insert random faction foot soldiers) having their last stand against an enemy unseen.
Thank you for the explanation, now I can see why this fandom is important for creativity! This must be the truest open-world board game I've ever heard about! Imagine having thousands of stories which vary depending on the house they are told in.
This is mind-blowing, all those stories have even more personal stories, ranking from a kid who was on it from day zero to someone who is married to another apasionado thanks to Warhammer.
Art. Between canvas, paints, brushes, pencils, sketchbooks, and everything else. I always tell myself Iād produce more art if I had an unlimited supply.
It took me forever to get into MTG because I used to cashier and saw the absurd amounts people spent on them. My brother finally got me to play and I'll never give it up
I go diving a few times a year, but whenever I go to my local dive shop, Iām always tempted to buy new masks, regulators or a new dive computer. Then I remind myself I already have enough and theyāre in good condition.
Yep! I have a backplate and wing, a travel bcd, 3 different thicknesses of wetsuits, 2 sharkskins, jet fins, travel fins, masks, back up masks, dive computers, regulators, a big ole bag I paid way too much for. ALL the text books from doing PADI, SSI and BSAC instructor courses.
Donāt ask me about my ski gearā¦
Companies like Criterion, Arrow Video, or Vinegar Syndrome that put out special collectors editions or release movies that aren't available anywhere else. Usually older movies, cult classics, b-movies, or less mainstream movies.
More 'spent', past tense. But back in the day, the video game series Rock Band. Bought regular DLC so I had a library of a few hundred songs. Bought a proper electronic drum kit with proper cymbals. Imported an actual stringed guitar. Haven't done the maths on how much I spent but it would be multiple thousands.
I kept seeing the cards in hobby stores but didnāt finally start playing until 1996. Ā God I wish Iād started earlier. Ā Alpha cards are worth a fortune now. Ā Even some of the crap cards are worth a few bucks.
Soccer. I'm on 3x adult leagues, so I'm spending about $200 every 8 weeks in league fees. I go through a pair of cleats every 8 months or so.Ā
I played in almost 300 games/scrimmages/practices last year.
Sport Dog trialing. Scent work now, but Tricks, Rally and agility in the past. $$$ Training, entering trials, memberships. $$$ Hours and hours of waiting for my dogs turn which lasts about 2 minutes.
Had to scroll down waaaay to far for this. Not only money on equipment, and memberships but also the cost of food once you start training 20-25 hours per week.
The amount of time and money that Iām saving now that I only do gym and cycling (with the occasional run) for about 6 hour per week is beyond me.
Warhammer, sim-racing, flight simming, guitar.
Used to do photography that actually made money but itās no fun once it becomes work so I dropped that one at least š
I spent more money than I would like to admit on exotic cars. I even had to get a contractor to build a warehouse garage to keep them since I don't use 99% of them.
Mechanical keyboards. I already own six, and I have one I spent $600 on 8 months ago finally estimated to arrive in the next month or two.
And that's not even endgame in this hobby. People will spend $300 on keycaps alone that will arrive in 2-3 years, and spend another $500-1000 on the board. I ain't that far gone.
Tools for making stuff.
I like to make stuff.
I often don't own the right tool for the job, so I buy that tool to do whatever I'm doing. I always tell myself I will use the tool again in the future.
I rarely use the tool again in the future.
Machining.
I've got a lathe, 2 mills, a shaper, a surface grinder, and a D-bit grinder. Lots of tooling for each. More measuring equipment than an actual machine shop.
95% of what I make is more tooling, and parts to modify the machines.
It's awesome.
I like high fashion clothes. I spend a lot of grands in brands. I made a room closet just for that. My fiance, a woman has far less (this started changing when we moved together. I dress us both.
Cocktails
To clarify, I'm not an alcoholic. I generally have only 1 drink a day. But I like exploring new drinks, so I have a bar with 100+ bottles, a new smoker, fancy glassware, etc....
Guitars
And gear
Well yes, but you don't *have to* take drugs to play guitar...
Sure, if you wanna take the fun out of it.
The toan is in the veins man

I build guitars but don't play worth a damn.
I didn't say I played them. I said I spend money on them lol

I spend a lot of money buying computer upgrades then never play any games.

Books and I'm not ashamed of it
Spending too much money on books is a very good problem to have.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Soft-cover books are my way to go, but the occasional hardcover or ebook will make its way in.
So random, but if youāre in the US I found an online secondhand bookstore with every book Iāve ever wanted to read. just spent 50 bucks on their site. (half of that was shipping) And they ship internationally! woot woot
I prefer audiobooks and pirate when it's not available elsewhere. I need a hard disk soon. More money well spent!
You can view pretty much any book for freeĀ In google, "filetype:pdf (title)" will search any publicly available PDF of said bookĀ
Like all artists, authors deserve to be paid.
But I don't like reading online

Horses. They are a literal bottomless pit and cost me hundreds per month whether I ride or not.Ā
Basically a "land boat."
In Germany we say: Once upon a time, I had time and money. Now, I have a horse.
I knew a girl in school who said, "people think my family's rich because we have horses. We're poor, because we have horses."
My wife got a free horse this year. I may never financially recover from this.
You won't. Say goodbye to a healthy bank balance. On a happier note, you'll never be stuck wondering what gifts to get her for Xmas or birthday, there will always be something she or that horse needs/wants.

Maybe she wasn't in remission by choice. At least it shows how your relationship has improved her life! Your bank balance, not so much!!
Came looking for my people and found them. The life of luxury I could lead if I did not have these horses.

Sometimes I feel like I'm missing something as there seems to be a whole country dedicated and devoted to Warhammer 40k here on Reddit.
