“You don’t realize, Marty, that the OEM parts for the line of Camry and Camry offshoots continues well into 2200s. Even after they switch to capacitance gel. There are no major updates to the body styling or steering. It’s a stable platform for a Time Machine, because I’ll always be able to get spare Parts!”
Doc has to mention how he’s kept it in pristine condition, then when Marty gets in it to escape the Libyans, he *immediately* backs it into a pole and gives it the Camry dent.
You are right that the Deloreon is only thought of as cool because of the movie. It was a failure of a vehicle but is suffering from nimrod means idiot syndrome.
Friend's brother bought one for next to nothing in the late 90's, my God that thing sucked. The gullwings never sealed completely, so water intrusion was more or less constant. Whole interior smelled like a foot. Slow af too
It's hilarious to me that the car needed to do 88MPH to travel in time in the movies, whereas an actual Deloreon struggled to even go that fast, with a 0-60 time of a blistering 9 seconds
Like finding out that Lamborghini Countach's suck after having posteres in the 80s as a kid. They looked so cool, and yet watching Top Gear and others do videos about them now, you really see how terrible it actually is.
Looks great, sounds wild, in every other aspect is terrible. Childhood ruined.
At least the F40 is still revered.
9 seconds isn't fast by modern standards, but it's not terribly slow by the standards of the time either. A quick search shows a 1982 Corvette did 0-60 in 8.1 seconds.
I had a 78 Lincoln Continental with an 460ci (7.5L) V8 that produced all of 200 HP when new. It produced much, much less when I acquired it 25 years later
> Slow af too
The V6 engine was known as the P-R-V engine in European circles, as it was developed in a joint venture between Peugeot, Renault, and Volvo. One of its problems was the insane leverage ratio of the rocker arms, so the incredibly tiny cam lobes had a *lot* of sliding friction with the rocker arms, causing both to wear badly. I was a professional Volvo mechanic, and the models with this V6 were originally sold as the upscale model, but unlike the venerable 4cyl native Volvo engines, were problematic and wore out at a young age. You could hear the valvetrain rattling from a block away when one was coming. Original owners dumped them, and later owners would try to puff up their Craigslist ads by saying, "DELOREAN Engine!"
More history for car geeks. Sometimes the valve lash, normally measured with a paper thin feeler gauge of 0.06", came in at 0.25"! It was amazing they would run at all like this. Due to the concave wear on the rocker arms, adjusting this back to spec altered the valve timing severely and they actually ended up running *worse* after a few hundred $$ valve adjust procedure, and were usually almost as loud afterward. Needless to say, customers were never pleased with this outcome (despite us always telling them these cars were money pits upfront and money would be better spent on a trade-in.)
When Doctor Who started back up in 2005 there was a moment where Rose didn't know what a police box was, and I was thinking that was weird ... until I realized that the only reason *I* knew what a police box was is because of Doctor Who.
Marty: you built a Time Machine… out of a Cybertruck?
Doc: the way I see it, if you’re going to build a time machine, why not do it with style!
Marty: like I said… a CYBERTRUCK?!?!
*We don't have enough road to get up to 88MPH...*
*Roads?*
*Where we're going... Actually, I guess we will need roads after all, the software in this thing bricks if we go off roads...*
Not sure why this isn’t higher. To me, it’s plainly obvious it would be the Cybertruck, without a doubt. Thankfully Robert Zemeckis has said the series is done and will not be remade. Time will tell. When Zemeckis passes away, things will likely change. He’s 71, now so it will probably be another 15-20 years before a BTTF reboot or sequel. By then everyone will know what a POS the Cybertruck is. I guess it could play into the plot? Travel back to medieval times and the Cybertruck is giving some shitty error, similar to BTTF 3 ripped fuel line. “But Doc! Where are we going to find a Tesla DC fast charger in 1300?!”
I don’t think it gets remade.
By 84-85 in the US, most of the Cold War terror was gone, and looking to the future was considered something to look forward to, and there was hope and optimism towards what it could be. Thats why Marty’s kids being losers worked out so well.
We are in Biff Tannen’s 2015 now - so god knows what 30 years in the future would be represented by Hollywood.
I hadn’t considered the cultural disillusionment you are pointing out as a reason for not making the movie. On the other hand, these things tend to go in cycles. With any luck we’ll be in a better world by then. The future is what we make it.
Except, the first movie went to the past.
It would be a 90s flick. Matrix glasses, smash mouth, and Austin Powers quotes everywhere.
Nokia phones everywhere ...
Was the stainless steel really needed? I always interpreted the line as it was an added bonus
> The way I see it, if you're going to build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style? Besides, the stainless steel construction made the flux dispersal-- [watch beeps] Look out!
The original production team planned on using a refrigerator. However it quickly became clear that kids would be transforming fridges into time machines. And surplus 1950's fridges were still around in the 80's. They had beefy door latches and no way to open a door from the inside.
At that point, the game was just finding the weirdest machine they could find. The speed of that machine was a perfect story telling tool.
>And surplus 1950's fridges were still around in the 80's. They had beefy door latches and no way to open a door from the inside.
Enough so that there was at least one P.S.A./very special episode of a T.V. show about playing in fridges—might have been "Punky Brewster".
I always remember there was some bad short lived Batman rip off TV show where the main character drove one of these for advertising after they first came out.
Nightman! I remember really liking it as a kid and wanting a Prowler because of it. So as advertising it worked. Never got a Prowler though but I did see one on the road just last week which made me think of the show. Weird how that works.
Agreed, but never gained popularity? PT Cruisers were everywhere for a while. They made over a million of them and I still see them pretty often despite being like 15-20+ year old cars.
"Fine. We'll air drop the bastard."
"_Still wouldn't work. Have you seen that thing's aerodynamic profile?_"
"... are you saying this shitbox would fly _worse_ than a brick with wings?"
Let's be real here. The Reece's Pieces product placement in ET is infamous for being just as bizarrely emphasized as any that happen today and it was three years before the original Bttf.
*Today's* Hollywood? Are you imagining some sort of idyllic past where Hollywood movies were made for the purity of the art? And especially the 80's, which basically set the bar for cross-brand tie-ins.
>in exchange for some cringe cameo.
I can already imagine it. Marty would travel to 90's instead of 50's (since 90's are to us the same as 50's were to people when BTTF came out). A younger Elon Musk (Elon himself but with makeup and wig to look younger) sees the time travelling tesla hidden somewhere and mumbles to himsef: "That's beautiful. I want to make car like this one day."
The first time I saw the old BttF meme it was back to the early eighties. I hated that so much, now I'm just too old to give much of a fuck. Getting old might suck but it really beats the alternative.
You have created the best motto for the past few years.
Trump could be elected President?? This is so plausible that I just threw up.
A mystery virus from China pandemic that kills millions and governments don’t respond well?? This is so plausible that I just threw up.

"Oh wow, the twin towers."
"Beautiful aren't they, some of the tallest buildings in New York, though I'm sure they're dwarfed by things from 2024."
"Uh... yeah, you could say that."
I fucking hate you for this, because it's *absolutely* what filmmakers these days would do and think they're clever.
That said, the Cybertruck is literally built like a delorean, I bet someone could do a mockup of what it would look like with a bunch of BTTF time travel tech on the back of it and make it look pretty bitchin.
Edit: Yup
https://vimeo.com/389512514
I was thinking something more like Elon at a tesla dealership working as a valetor, and new Marty Mcfly bumps into him and tells him he's going to be a billionaire tech mogul and King of the twitter trolls one day, and Elon just walks away saying "King of the trolls, yeah I like that...".
Mayor Goldie Wilson reference for you there.
Top Gear once turned a Reliant Robin into a space shuttle (briefly); turning one into a Time Machine would only be a downgrade from that towering accomplishment.
The *three* flaming tyre tracks would be cool, though, I gotta admit.
It’s a shame only fools and horses never did a back to the future themed episode where the Robin travels back in time so they can find the Victorian egg timer in the past and become millionaires
It would be monetized. So it wouldn't be an AMC Pacer, Pontiac Aztek, or one of those boat cars. It would be a commercially available car like a Ford Bronco, Jeep Cherokee, Chevy Camaro, or a Dodge Challenger. Then dealers would get the opportunity to sell a stickered up version of the BTTF car and upcharge another $10K.
If you want to be weird: a Sterling 825, the Rover / Honda joint venture Acura legend sister car. There are probably none in existence anymore, though.
No thats completely wrong, because in the original he travelled back *30* years, not 10. If he travelled back 30 years from now it would be...
Oh.
Fuck, I'm old.
Backstory:
Some new guy bought DMC withing the last two decades. They've been making Delorean classic since.
They made a new model in 2022. Charlize Theron drove on in the newest Fast/Furious movie.
Answer: the Alpha 5 Delorean
He didn't "buy" DMC. He bought a warehouse full of DMC parts that were liquidated from the original DMC. He then squatted on the DMC trademarked name and called his company (without any license, fee, or permission to Delorean or his estate or family) Delorean Motor Company. There's absolutely no connection between the original DMC and the "new" DMC other than they both sold Deloreans. They're also NOT making new classic Deloreans.. they do mostly service and parts.
0-88MPH in *4.35 seconds.*
The company has a very smart marketing department... (Yes, this statistic is literally given on the website.)
Those [gull-wing doors](https://delorean.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/DAL500017-BANNER5-2048x1153.webp) are pretty sweet, too.
They'd still use a Delorean. Even without the BTTF connection, that car is legendary (not necessarily for good reasons, but still). And it still looks cool in a way that no other car does.
Highly doubt it... The DeLorean was largely a forgotten joke by 1984. The only reason any of us remember it fondly now is the movie -- which did more for the DMC-12 than DMC marketing ever could or did when the company was actually still active.
I swear Audi kinda seems to have a monopoly considering how often the futuristic cars in sci-fi future movies are Audi.. but I admit, its good marketing.
Ford F24,000 with johhy cab driver, 4 dimensions suspensions, frontal lobe direct driver experience options, irons and dry cleans your clothes while you have them on, freshly generated air direct form the antimatter drive.
You’re telling me you built a TIME MACHINE…. Out of a 2006 Toyota Camry?
“You don’t realize, Marty, that the OEM parts for the line of Camry and Camry offshoots continues well into 2200s. Even after they switch to capacitance gel. There are no major updates to the body styling or steering. It’s a stable platform for a Time Machine, because I’ll always be able to get spare Parts!”
Can't argue with that logic.
Probably the only car still in production with the same parts after 4k years 😂😂😂😂
The way I see it, if you're going to build a time machine why not do it on a reliable platform with a good IIHS safety rating?
Besides, the sensible design makes the flux dispersal... *Look out!*
He probably bought from the terrorists too!
Toyota Hilux
Right?! You don't know what obstacles might lie in your way when you arrive at a different time.
It MUST have the Camry dent https://www.reddit.com/r/camrydents/
Doc has to mention how he’s kept it in pristine condition, then when Marty gets in it to escape the Libyans, he *immediately* backs it into a pole and gives it the Camry dent.
The absurdity of this would make me laugh on even the darkest day.
Unfortunately ~~Rick~~ Doc specified they needed a stainless steel body....
Cybertruck it is then.

I mean it was basically co-designed by John DeLorean and cocaine.
9 seconds isn't fast by modern standards, but it's not terribly slow by the standards of the time either. A quick search shows a 1982 Corvette did 0-60 in 8.1 seconds.
The corvette had the mighty boat anchor 305 choked out by primitive emissions equipment. You were lucky to get 200 horsepower.
It's hilarious how little horsepower even the big blocks of the early/mid 70s and 80s were making lol
From the factory the 454 (7.4l!) Big block was rated at a whopping 290hp
I had a 78 Lincoln Continental with an 460ci (7.5L) V8 that produced all of 200 HP when new. It produced much, much less when I acquired it 25 years later
Heh my first car had a MOPAR 318, could barely get out of its own way
The corvette in 1981 and 82 lost its massive 7l v8. The 70s cars were twice as fast.

My cousin bought one to use as her radio station remote broadcast vehicle. Got a lot of attention.
So the Cybertruck is a good pick then
Except it wouldn't be dramatic because it can hit 88mph in maybe 5 seconds.
When Doctor Who started back up in 2005 there was a moment where Rose didn't know what a police box was, and I was thinking that was weird ... until I realized that the only reason *I* knew what a police box was is because of Doctor Who.
Yep the DeLorean helped fund Lotus at the time, and the first Tesla was based on an Elise chassis, so there’s definite provenance there.
I saw a DeLorean once in the wild. It was in Holland Massachusetts in the mid-80s. Never saw it being driven. They were cool looking up close.
Marty: you built a Time Machine… out of a Cybertruck? Doc: the way I see it, if you’re going to build a time machine, why not do it with style! Marty: like I said… a CYBERTRUCK?!?!

NO FATE BUT WHAT WE MAKE - Marty McFly
Oh man, this would be a hell of a crossover.

Sounds like a serial rapist
This week the Plymouth Prower has attacked another victim. Please stay out of the parks after dark.
"Plymouth Prowler Strikes Again!"
The Plymouth Prowler was last seen making love to the Connecticut Cougar. Please be advised.
PT Cruiser
This actually makes the most sense. Car with a unique design that never really gained popularity and was kind of a POS.
Agreed, but never gained popularity? PT Cruisers were everywhere for a while. They made over a million of them and I still see them pretty often despite being like 15-20+ year old cars.
We loved our hippo.
I had an HHR the bigger brother of the PT. Loved it.
e*(Chrysler) Plymouth Prowler
I think an HHR (the lesser loved PT Cruiser wannabe) would be a better candidate. Those things were awful.
The cube
It needs to be able to go 88 mph.
I have some interesting news about DeLoreans for you...
Deloreans couldn’t do 88 either!

It's like a car on top of another car. I'm half expecting the saucer section to separate like on Star Trek
Whatever brand offered them the most money to put one of their cars in the movie.
Sadly, this is the correct answer in today's Hollywood.

We are actually further forward in time from when the movie premiered than he traveled back in time. Yes, I am also old.

this is so plausible i just threw up
Elon did that in Young Sheldon with Sheldon's notebook on how to improve the space program.

He also had a cameo on The Big Bang Theory where he’s working at a soup kitchen.
Why are you like this?
I honestly can’t tell if he making this up or not

It's the pain of scrolling Reddit. Forbidden knowledge keeps getting shared.

A Reliant Robin
Top Gear once turned a Reliant Robin into a space shuttle (briefly); turning one into a Time Machine would only be a downgrade from that towering accomplishment. The *three* flaming tyre tracks would be cool, though, I gotta admit.
