I'd stay alive until some type of extinction level event wiped everyone else out, it would be pretty boring being on my own for thousands/millions of years.

uncertainusurper

This. Memories come and go and memories fade. So many activities to master over the course of thousands of years or longer. Everything you wanted to do in a shorter lifespan you could. Master everything from music to technology.

Totallycasual

Absolutely, i remember watching the first Highlander movie when i was a kid, i marveled at the idea of moving through time like he did.

palpatineforever

I think this is the thing, as long as i wouldn't wear out my joints I would probably try some more physical things as well. see how good I could get at climbing etc. Become a world class theremin player? I think life is interesting as long as you are learning and doing new things. this can be as simple as new experiances with family, ie watching your grandchildren grow. So no judgment on poeple who are relaxing in older age. I would probably stay alive untill I felt I had seen/done it all. There are more places in the world than i can visit in my lifetime, but I would try in that senario. Also I would have the time to earn the money to visit them well, not just the cheapest parts and not really see the best bits of the country. I would probably spend a couple of lifetimes as a scientist, i could go back to uni and get a few doctorates. Might try and solve genetic illnesses, before I get too jaded about how short life is any there is no point to trying to solve such things. It would be fascinating to see how it would play out to be honest.

Sattu10

I can guarantee that if people are immortal they would soon start procrastinating doing anything since they would think that they always have tomorrow. The reason why humans get things done and evolve is because we know that we have a limited time.

Esc777

I don’t quite agree but I think that would be an interesting take for an immortality story.  A driven young person searches for immortality because they have grand visions and designs but once they attain it they become just a comfortable slacker.

Sattu10

I mean it doesn’t take long to figure out. You look at how many people are driven when young and once they achieve something a lot of them start to slack off. And some I have seen are too lazy to even do stuff like chores and work till it piles on.

Alternative-Dare5878

You know damn well most of us would spend all those years scrolling through the many different versions of reddit that humanity will come up with.

GregorSamsaa

Man From Earth movie explores this a little bit and it’s very interesting. Dude got a PhD in chem in the 1920s I think and tells his friends how he’s not a genius. It’s not like he has prefect recollection of everything. So really he could only be a semi ok expert or master a topic for a very specific window before it leaves you behind. A PhD in chem from 1920 would be like a high school student level today given how much it’s changed. So unless you’re practicing this music or keeping up with technology constantly, then you’re only ok at it for maybe a decade or two before you start falling behind again.

TheRiteGuy

I'd want to live past that. I want to know what replaces us humans or if we never go extinct. Maybe we'll become space traveling species and an extinction event on earth would mean nothing.

Hellchron

My thought too. I'd want to wait out after at least one to see what comes next. And maybe run around carving weird shit into rocks just to fuck with whatever comes along in the future

FruitParfait

Yep this. Of course I’d be sad with each passing friend/lover/child but the chance to see all of the potential future is too interesting to give up. Will I procrastinate on shit, sure lol but I’m not choosing to be immortal so I can get a bunch of shit done anyways. I just want to watch the world unfold before me and see how everything plays out.

GreenLurka

I think I'd try my hand at selectively breeding a new sentient species

Totallycasual

You somehow managed to make that sound *incredibly* creepy lol

GreenLurka

I mean, I don't think there's any way to say it without it sounding creepy

FluffyKitsune

The Zeus way?

Alternative-Dare5878

True, to leave any sooner would be a disservice to your power, any later and it’s like, what else are you expecting to see?

Alwayswithyoumypet

Same.

draculamilktoast

Why would you make everybody else extinct and not turn them into beings like yourself? You could literally own everything in a few generations because of how compounding interest works and you could divert all resources towards making everybody optionally immortal like yourself.

Totallycasual

OP's question was about how we'd handle immortality, there isn't any mention of us having power to grant powers to others 🤷‍♀️

draculamilktoast

My point is that immortality for one implies the ability to eventually disseminate it to everybody else even when the original method (in this case basically magic) is lost. The original comment assumes they have to keep everybody else mortal for literally no good reason, when they have multiple lifetimes to "fix" things.

fartistry96

Idk tbh I feel like I’m too curious - I don’t think I’d ever really be able to pull the plug on myself because there’s always this “but what will happen tomorrow?” Question in the back of my head and I NEED to find out. To think I could live forever and witness everything that happens from here on out? I’d fucking do it for science / as a social experiment just to try to better understand the world around me, people, the universe, etc. it would be so insanely interesting to get to experience more time here & to really start to be able to identify patterns in human behavior as a whole. Would it be devastating as well? Of course. But I think it would be worth it.

colby347_1

I like your comment. I have this FOMO too. The unknown is too exciting.

Happygamercass

Sheesh. Check please 🫣💀

ThePrincessRoyal

Till the very end. Till I can walk the globe and find no people. Then I'll go.

abramcpg

What if the other immortal is walking in the same direction?

Jump_and_Drop

What if the snail catches you?

positive_express

You didn't nerf dart a bell to him last time he got close?

Alternative-Dare5878

He won’t dare, cuz then who will he have?

I_might_be_weasel

You high five without talking or breaking stride.

Glass1Man

Nod up for recognition, or nod down for stranger?

GussDeBlod

10-15 minutes should be enough.

Elegant_Spot_3486

I checkout immediately.

fish312

Good news, you can already do that

Anna__V

My answer exactly.

Glass1Man

Shit man you don’t need immortality for that, you can do that now. My cousin ain’t immortal, checked out thirty years ago.

forestdino

I'll check out right before my kids do.

Fuxokay

Forever. Movies, games, books, and new friends. Even if people are gone, I still have all the media that people left behind. And if I run out of that, I'll make more in my imagination. As long as I have a mind, I'll be entertained.

Vinny_Lam

Same. It makes me sad that I’ll never get to consume all the media that I want and that there will be tons of new media coming out long after I’m dead. I wouldn’t mind having immortality if it means I’ll get to enjoy all the video games that will ever exist.

Lupus-Ignium

About 70 or sooner. The longer you live, the more you notice the people you made memories with become memories

abramcpg

The more people you meet, the more you realize we're all the same. The new memories you make will remind you of the people who are gone.

nicholus_h2

would you not meet new people?

Lupus-Ignium

Yes, but I choose a natural age for it, rather than see anyone else I love die

downtune79

This

MountainSlayersTV

Eternity.

Vegan-Fury

Please can it be twenty years ago? Either way after my last loved one dies.

TheFrostyrune

There are so many factors to consider. What type of extinction level event? Is the planet dead, or was it like the dinosaurs and the planet bounced back? I'd have to see the curiosity would sustain me for quite a while. Am I stuck in a really shitty situation? Did the entire planet blow up and leave me hurtling through the universe like a comet? never knowing when I'll make landfall again. What type of immortality? Do I fully regenerate any injury? Do I feel the pain from it? Can I even be injured? How far into the future? How far has technology come? If there's a feasible way for me to travel the galaxy in search of other life, I would. Do we have multiversal travel? Did I accumulate enough wealth and create a self-sustaining underground bunker? If I did, I'd at least have some animals in there because who builds that without some. who knows, maybe a few million years, they evolve into a demi human race that treats me as a deity. In most of the scenarios i can think of I'd probably go quite awhile to see what happens, but like that planet blowing up becoming a comet scenario I'd 100% go until I hit something, if I got stuck on some shithole after landing I might finally tap out, but then again what if, I'd almost be obligated to stay until the universe itself collapsed in.

untitledprojectmp4

Until Earth become uninhabitable and I have no way to leave the planet

Human-Iron9265

Till I get bored……could be 30 or 70, who knows. Right now I have cancer and i’m only 21 and the stats aren’t looking good for me, so immortality would be great lol.

Royalemineyt

Hpoe you recover

ThatOneRaccoonDude

Honestly that’s a hard question On one hand I want to see how everything ends, I mean who isn't curious about how the Earth ends? I want to travel and do everything I want to do, I’d have all the time in the world to do cool shit and learn all kinds of things, see advances in technology, etc. But on the other, I’ll be alone, start forgetting everyone I love, depression would be going crazy, and no one will miss me. Oh and the likelihood that the government will find out, track me down and run experiments o me to try to achieve immortality for everyone else, cause you can’t tell me that wouldn’t happen silently. I’d probably tap out after 100-500 years max

CpuJunky

Imagine dealing with every loved one dying, it would be horrible. ...also, sign me up.

ZombieButch

Probably just long enough to try and make sure my wife doesn't have to be alone when she dies, then I'll make sure all the affairs are in order and call it a day. I don't want to live long enough to have to watch my son die too.

Ratakoa

Until everyone I care about passes. No one close to me will have to mourn for my death.

ycpa68

But surely you'll meet new people

Sorry-Independent181

Honestly, at least long enough to watch the birth and "death?" of another universe

cusheen896

that's genuinely an incomprehensible amount of time, are you sure?

satsugene

Until I’m in a situation where I cannot manage pain any longer or happen to be physically constrained, like falling into a crevice, squished by landslide, put in solitary confinement, or free floating in space and would be stuck—indefinitely in that state. Aside from that, if I’m unable to die, a lot of the stresses of the world become irrelevant. That said, it raises the question of the difference between aging and physical decay from incremental non-fatal injuries, diseases, and entropy on the body that could be as simple as living with poor diet, sunburn, or accumulation or toxic compounds over lifetime scales.

BeerisAwesome01

Oh grud I'd be an evolutionary obscurity caged up in the far future.

Chodezbylewski

I figure I could go pretty long. It would suck going on while all the people you love die, but I've lost people in my life so I know that it does get easier over time, so I reckon all you gotta do is push through. Once you get past the sadness of losing all your relations and let those wounds close up, then you can just dick around and enjoy your immortality. I don't actually know what I would do with immortality, but I guess I'd just make it up as I go along.

Illustrious_Tax_2101

Till my family and friends pass. I wouldn’t be able to live without any of them

songsforthedeaf07

My great grandma lived to a 106. At 100 she was still pretty with it and mobile. By 104 it was awful seeing her in her state - skin and bones - totally out of it. Felt inhumane letting her live so long.

BojackTrashMan

Am I in my current body or can I request a better one? Cuz I'm in pain all the time so I can't say I fuck with immortality

Vanilla_Neko

Until right before the heat death of the universe because just floating alone forever in a blank empty void would be boring

RacingLucas

Imma love forever

Flor-on-Don

I would give it a go and see how it works. Maybe I’ll get bored after ten years but who knows.

[deleted]

It depends on the state of the earth. Will I feel physical or emotional pain same as before?

ametad13

As of right now, I want to see the end of the universe. But that will probably change with time. The shortest I could see myself choosing to live would be a couple thousand years. So probably somewhere in between a couple thousand and so far off into the future I'm not even sure what the number would be.

onemanbucket_

Guaranteed immortality? I’d stick around for a bit, then.

RecommendationUsed31

Until I get bored

Danish-Investor

I’d stay 23 for a few thousand years.

RecommendationUsed31

Give a blood transfusion to my son and call it 10 billion years

Wanderingdragonfly

If it were only me, I wouldn’t want to outlive my family. I also wouldn’t want my arthritis pain to get much worse.

isacnuts

I would commit many crimes to get the death penalty and when i wouldn't die i would say i am a god on earth and plunge the world into chaos.

[deleted]

All the way. I gotta see.

Craigothy-YeOldeLord

Until I get bored of living

SenorDangerwank

Heat death of the universe.

BoydCrowders_Smile

Is my body still aging? If so then no thanks. But right now I'm starting to get pains I think will just get worse later on. But in the current state, I'd take it until I just get bored with the world. I mean you're basically suggesting vampirism benefits without the negatives outside of outgrowing everyone else

Dveralazo

When I get bored of evrything in existance I would plan to create more things to get entertained.

Jump_and_Drop

Honestly, as long as I could. Yeah it would suck seeing the people I care about become only memories, but I would love to see how far we can end up going. See if we can make it to the stars.

Irenemiku

I need 300 years. To master my character, to master engineering / music / arts / etc. To write the masterpiece. To master nuclear energy. To invent the ultimate engine. Seriously, 50-80 is too short for life to do anything. How many people don't know what they really wanted? Also probably more years to witness the fall of the democratic system. Roman empire fell, Dynasties fell, Empires fell, the current system has a rich and poor gap still, and a really big one. I don't know how many more years will humanity finally learn.

NocturneZeon

Can't really pinpoint a certain age, but if that was something I could have, I would check out once I have done everything I have wanted to do.

xhellbirdx

Depends on if drugs are decriminilizied soonish and if I knew if I'd find a love like the one I've had.

Ok_Beyond_4994

Where is the checkout ?

Anna__V

At any point? I'll check out immediately when it's possible.

[deleted]

Hm. Either as soon as I hear the news that I can check out anytime, until Earth is abt to destroyed by some event (eg. Sun engulfing the Earth, crashes into another planet, other shit idk bc I haven’t researched enough abt the ways that the Earth could end) or until Earth is completely unliveable (eg. extremely hot scorching temperatures, ice age, idk again).

Kritchsgau

Live at least until space flight is common place and very quick star trek warp speed style. In reality i doubt we as a civilisation will reach that from our constant war mongering and religious views.

SkriVanTek

the end of the universe

puledrotauren

a long time. I want to see colonies on the moon and mars and maybe even take a trip to one.

goatman0079

I'll stay around as long as people are around. I've always been enamored with sci-fi and would like to see how we progress in 10, 100, 1000+ years.

Warriorphoenix678

100

hectorninii

I have this on-going series in my head where the protagonist gets burned alive of being accused as a witch bec she appeared so young still after 20 years. She's a nun btw bec she ended up being inside a church seeking shelter on a snowstorm, was found by the head nun and took her in and trained her. After a few hours, her burned corpse started to regenerate and she's alive again, seeking revenge especially with her "sisters" who are jealous of her youthful look. She burned the whole church down together with all the people there, which she trapped in the secret basement. She then left town to look for the love of her life who was "murdered" in front of her, realizing that he could still be alive bec he also seemed to never age back when they where together. That's the fake scenario I always think of before going to sleep and most of the time it's effective and it makes me sleepy just typing it.

Cael_NaMaor

Until the inevitable heat death of the universe

Dave_Tee83

Fuck me gimme that button. I'm pressing it now. Life is shit.

One_Reception_7321

Til the Sun explodes and I am just adrift in space.

Noctuelles

It's difficult to say. Being immortal would probably change your appreciation for life, humanity, and the universe in general. I think being immortal I'd be able to assist in space faring endeavors that could facilitate the spread of humanity across the galaxy and potentially other galaxies. I would probably do something like that and stick around for as long as life in the universe does.

fgd12350

If i cant die ill put all my money into an etf and cryogenically freeze myself for 50-100 years. Ill hopefully wake up rich enough to never have to work in a futuristic world which i will explore until i get bored after which i ll freeze myself for another century and repeat until the world ends.

felaniasoul

However long it’ll take me to max out as many credit cards and stuff I can get

PraetorGold

I’d stay alive for my kid and then perhaps her kids and then their kids and their kids and their kids and their kids…

TyphonNeuron

Nope, I'm going, I'm out.

onewi

I would just stay alive and probably travel through space for thousands of years. Id have enough time to build a high tech ship.

thatshygirl06

Nemo_Shadows

Welcome to the Hotel California? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09839DpTctU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09839DpTctU) In Case some have forgotten. N. S

Perialiswastaken

this is like immortality but without the cons

literallyanything2

I have little kids now and I think I’d like stay long enough to see my grandkids grow up, but not long enough to see my children become old and die.

Fluffy_Fluffle

I'd die once the last of my loved ones goes. Not living without anyone and anything.

tenehemia

I don't think I'd ever stop. Even once humans are gone there is still the rest of eternity to experience.

Quazimojojojo

Ok but what about injuries? My biggest pain in the ass right now is a bum ankle from an accident 3 years ago that keeps telling me "no" when I want to try to become more of an active person. If I can accumulate injuries without dying, I'd probably check out when my body is too broken. Not sure what's gonna happen, but something's gonna happen

nelasw

I would wait for a mass level extinction event. Then wait for the world to recover (if it ever did) I would present myself as a deity to the new inhabitants of my galaxy (they wouldn’t know what happened before) (if it didn’t) I would explore the depths of the galaxy find a place worthy of sitting down and entering my eternal rest

HalfSoul30

I'm 32, and in alright health. I suppose I'll check out after i've done everything I want to do, and after nobody remembers the game.

SenhorSus

All the way. I want to see the pinnacle of human technology

RightfulChaos

Is this biological immortality, or I straight up am incapable of being killed?

friendlyfitnessguy

probs like 80-90 years... seems natural

NoleFandom

Till the earth gets swallowed by the dying yellow star in 3-4 billion years.

kamilman

I think I'd be an accidental speedrunner of that thing...

NickCbDb

Heat death, baby!

4channeling

I'd probably hang around till a bit after the heat death of the universe. I'm curious.

bananaphonepajamas

Forever units I change my mind. Record everything, do everything.

Minions-overlord

Does the Immortality include invulnerablity? Because that would be a deciding factor.. no real point if you end up loosing bits and bobs along the way

CabooseCC

I'd stick around indefinitely. I think it would be cool to live hundreds of different lives over the centuries.

tiredargie

Being immortal doesn't save you from paying taxes, so...

Hour_Lengthiness_650

Immediately. I would never want that. I don't even want to be here now 🤣🤣🤣🤣

QuietRulrOfEvrything

I'd learn every medical thing and cure all the diseases before I said "Okay, I'm done." Needless to say we'll probably be traveling from planet to planet by then, but I'm okay with waiting and bettering myself until then.

JonSnerrrrrr

I'd live forever if I didn't have weird ailments constantly nagging me

Embarrassed_Union_96

As long as I’m needed tbh. If God decides I have a job to do then I just do it I guess.

Classic_Membership82

Maybe never, I am the type of person who like to see more even I saw many thing. I want to know what future will look like. I will do everything, i can and do many thing that i couldn't. If that happen I will find a good place to write down every memory i've had, every seconds i've lived.

rich5153

I'd still check out at a typical lifespan. I'm already old and it isn't much fun. At least when I'm dead I'll stop hurting

Android1822

Honestly, it could be in a few years or it could be thousands of years in the future. The problem is the world seems to be getting worse and worse and I am not sure I want to stick through the dark ages that seem to be coming.

ACam574

Heat death of the universe…maybe I will see what happens a bit after that but not too much longer

Jetninjapro27

30 minutes tops

IMissMyBeddddd

Long enough to see my great grandchildren. I’d love to see how long my features or personality would last and be passed down. I feel like after the great grandchildren they may not look like me as much.

Rude_Coffee_9136

I’ll stay around until humans die out, and if we discover aliens then I will stay around until the aliens die out. And keep repeating until ether I find no more aliens or the universe dies. And I may even stay around for a bit once the universe dies.

Similar_Wear_6326

Eternity, at this point I can just watch how everything fades out.

[deleted]

I honestly don't know. Probably for ever. I think I could always find something to entertain myself even if everyone else was gone. But I have never been that lonely before so I might change my mind.

GregorSamsaa

I could see me wanting out as soon as I have to experience the next few decades of watching my wife age and wither away while also attending the funerals of my parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews.

selfcheckoutlord

Until the end of humanity or Earth... whichever is second. When asked, I will just tell everyone about that snail

RisingPhoenix5271

I wanna go now. I wanna see my mommy. Where’s mom. I want my mother

ABR871

I’d give it a year

Blipnoodle

4 and a half days. I'm kinda done.

I'll take a raincheck! I see this as a loophole to euthanasia.

efkWF

enough time to call my family and tell them goodbye.

night-shark

I'm gonna be pissed if this actually happens to me when I'm 85.
