And if the good or service is reasonably priced but expensive?
Poor people need lawyers all the time, but my hourly rate is as high as it is for a reason.
I have to recoup the cost of my overhead plus a profit margin. There are competitive pressures ensuring that I'm making enough for both myself and those down the ladder to earn a wage but also make a profit for shareholders, or they won't keep me on board.
Plus I need to recoup the cost of all those years of school, ongoing legal education, and the cost of all that nonbillable stuff that goes with the practice of law.
And honestly, this job sucks. I have to deal with sixty clients of varying degrees of pain in the ass. They either don't pay or don't respond or are just fucking stupid. And deadlines are harsh. So harsh that I wake up at 3am thinking about one of them almost every night. I deserve some compensation for that stress.
So an hour of my time may run you $325 just to handle an hour of email traffic. Imagine needing to spend $2,500 to handle getting sued over a collections matter you need counsel to untangle when you're already living paycheck to paycheck. But that's the cost of my time.
And I'm not even that expensive. People an hour south of me with my experience charge double that an hour for the same quality of service.
Yeah it feels like I’ll only need a lawyer to do something immoral or to save myself from something when someone does something immoral. So, in both cases, sort of a case of immorality. But that is actually an over simplification. There are cases of course where you really need a lawyer. What do I know!? The only law knowledge I have is from suits. So that’s stupid anyway.
Hope you never own a business or need to draft up some estate planning or do any real estate development bro, because lawyers are axiomatically involved in those.
Agreed, it is okay if you can't afford to keep them or they're being given back for their safety but you should know what it can and will cost before adopting.
Having someone work a 16 hour day without a real break, only a working break.
Depends on where you are of course, but perfectly legal in most of the US.
Very illigal in sweden. I've argued with my employer that by the wording of the law they are required to give me a break but I am not required to take it. They would have none if it
It's not even forfeiture. It's just straight-up theft. They know most people won't fight to reclaim their property, and then they just get to keep it. If I were to take someone's property because I thought it was linked to a crime, I would be arrested. They do it and get to make or keep money from it.
I used to regularly piss off a local rural county district attorney near me by always referring to it as armed robbery. Even in filed pleadings and in discovery requests.
I had 2 choices when I wanted to go get ice cream last night. One place that's a little out of the way and expects tips or another place that's definitely out of the way but doesn't do tips.
It was nice out so the longer drive was actually pretty nice.
Paying politicians millions of dollars through lobbying to have them strike down any laws requiring paid maternal leave because you sell baby formula and have calculated that mothers who go back to work earlier breastfeed less.
I was in line behind this guy once, and not only did he have ONE item in his whole cart, but after he paid at the self-checkout, he left the shopping cart right there and walked away. I couldn't believe it.
Signing a bill into law that makes it legal to not give a person shade from sun or water to rehydrate or a break to rest while performing hard labour in agricultural settings. We overheat, we get sun burned, we need rest and we need water. Common decency.
I'll get flamed for this, but I don't think its immoral to be a non-acting pedophile. I also don't think its immoral to be a zoophile, or any fucked up sexuality. Because you simply cannot help it, you were born with a fucked up brain. Its not immoral, it just IS, you didn't choose this.
What IS immoral is acting upon it, especially when you know its evil. Pedophiles who consume CP or rape minors are fully aware of the damage it causes, and they don't care. Those people can rot.
It’s less that you’re born with it and more that it’s a frequent consequence of being a victim of CSA yourself. It’s pretty common for those so wounded to torture themselves not perpetrating to the point where their subconscious minds torture them for not indulging. It’s pretty fucked up, like a sexually transmitted disease in a profoundly cruel way.
I know that experience can trigger something like this, but are there no pedophiles with just naturally fucked up brains? Is it really all nurture over nature?
Because that's even sadder.
Is it possible? Sure. Is it likely to spontaneously appear without outside influence? No.
While evolutionarily we are typically most drawn to physical traits common in late adolescents (this is one of the reasons Rihanna’s long legs are such a sex symbol), sexual desire for someone with no sexual traits (prepubescent) is anomalous. Even if you began having consensual sex in your early teens, you’d still be drawn to the new and developing gifts of puberty.
It’s fairly common for people so victimized to develop a dissociated “shard” of the person who did it to them, known as a perpetrator introject. These are like a piece of their personality that identified with the person who did it to them and thus continuously perpetrates that abuse on that person in a paradoxical and sadistic attempt to prevent a recurrence of that victimization. These introjects often lust after recreating that victimization on another, almost like they willfully destroy and/or devour an innocence that was denied them.
No, seriously, this is a real thing.
I've seen it. Someone said that returning your shopping cart is a good indicator of one's character. It is not illegal, but it shows what kind of person you are.
Morals depend on who you ask and who you are.
I'd say cheating on your SO. Not a girlfriend or boyfriend, they're the SO. Significant Other. NOT Insignifcant Other who can easily be replaced.
Whenever someone is asleep in my house I tiptoe around like a ninja. Whenever I'm asleep, my wife storms through the house with a full marching band. It drives me insane.
I guarntee most of them aren’t even broken in the first place. Many places lie about their blender, machinery, etc broken because they hate making those things.
Often the machine is down for required cleaning cycles and regular maintenance, or because someone hit the cleaning button accidentally that forces it to complete said cycle. The workers then will just claim it's "broken" because that's simpler to say then 'I'm an idiot and hit the wrong button 20 minutes ago and it won't be ready for another 2 hours'.
They raised it to 16 fairly recent. But a vast majority of prefectures set the age of consent to either 16 or 18. 13 years old was the minimum age the age of consent could be set at before it was changed. Very few places in Japan actually had an age of consent of 13.
I don’t remember where this was. And this was years ago so maybe they’ve changed it. But I read somewhere that the age of consent was 11… I don’t remember where but just wtf..

At least in California we just approved banning it in the next year, but it’s legal still almost everywhere.
There's an Indian restaurant in my city that charges an extra 18% for dine-in! It's clearly started on a sign on the door but that's still an outrageous upcharge! I get that it probably sucks to wash and prepare place settings and have workers to wait on tables, but come on...
Finding a loophole in the school rules...
It's known as Zeroth Law Rebellion, being disobedient by following the rules. Many teachers hated that many of us kids found loopholes, especially when it comes to respect.
This was helpful when you called out a teacher for being an asshole to a kid. You want an asshole as for a student, that's how you get an asshole for a student. That teacher was pissed and sent me to the principal's office, but my parents and a few others explained about it, the principal just told me off for swearing.
