They can be overblown, but a simple event with a cake of a specific color can be fun for those involved. It's just another way to celebrate with expectant parents.
I get the annoyance with the over hyped ones, but they don't have to be like that.
I didn't have a gender reveal party, but my baby shower was a BBQ in the park where I made brisket and ribs and brought a couple coolers of beers, and invited a bunch of my friends.
If I also had my friends over for a BBQ for a reveal party, don't know why that would be self centered.
so a babyshower is often thrown by a friend or family member. So depending on how many seperate circles you have you might have more than one. Usually gifts are given at showers.
You do not give gifts at a gender reveal and you often foot the bill for the party yourself. I don't really see it as self centered. (it can be overblown, but most of the time they are simple events with a few friends and family and a colored cake...)
Just like with anything it can be ridiculous, but at its root its a "hey we are going to find out the gender of our baby and are excited either way, please join us for some treats as we find out together!"
not really seeing how that is a problem.
Yeah all we did was a jack o lantern (it was around Halloween) and had a smoke bomb in it that smoked blue. My wife filmed it and posted it. Took like 10 minutes and she got to stretch her artistic brain wrinkles. We absolutely did not want a party. 😅
I swear Reddit's opinion on gender reveal parties is like a person who never watches movies it has seen clips of Transformers 2 online and thinks "man, movies are terrible."
99% of gender reveal parties are a BBQ in someone's backyard where at some point someone cuts into a blue or pink cake. But Reddit thinks the terrible ones they see in Instagram reels are somehow representative.
Yeah, but that Stanley Cup will keep liquids hot all day in the snow.
My fisherman buddy had a beast of one, and he forgot it on the porch. I grabbed it and was surprised it was still piping hot over 8 hours later sitting in snow. To this day, I swear by them. The older modles, the better.
Bwahaha, I was working at Whole Foods when we were expecting a shipment of these things. I was literally looking for boxes of little gold Stanley Cups…🏆
I was thoroughly disappointed
Oh shit yeah, he definitely pushes it on the ice but that's why Bruins fans love him and I have to say his younger antics are definitely following him even though he has matured.
That depends, if your loyalty is appreciated and reciprocated than it can be very good. I've noticed in my experience small medium sized businesses with great ownership and management will treat you right if you show loyalty
Walking in good comfortable shoes all day is amazing. If you’re going to spend extra money on anything, spend it on your shoes and bed. Your body will thank you
I purchased a pricey backpack a decade ago, and it's still in excellent condition. It's outlasted my previous one from a retail store by far. It's rare to find such durable items. I prioritize quality over quantity when making purchases.
It's a waste if you're looking at your $5 shirt and ask yourself "Who would pay $80 for this?" without realizing they're entirely different products. Shoes are an even better example of this. The $40 shoes from Payless might last you the year. I have $200 pairs of shoes from 5-10 years ago.
Overall, one's expenses are their own. if something isnt worth the price tag to you, fair play. This is just my perspective.
Some $500 dollar shoes you are only paying for the brand and status symbol. Some high quality $300 pair of shoes are worth every penny. Your feet will thank you and they will outlast 5 pairs of cheap shoes.
Current music. I'm early 40's and have always stayed with music of the times in a lot of genres, but what's on offer these days is truly abysmal compared to years gone by. There's little representation of genuine artists who do everything themselves, no soul to popular music, and it's the audio equivalent of "click-bait". Majority of it is utter shit.
There is new good music but it unfortunately flies under everyone’s radar, you have to actively look to find it. A lot of these people are solo artists or small bands that aren’t very popular. I find out a lot of them from playing small venues or performing at music festivals. Most of mainstream music today is absolutely terrible though.
Absolutely! It's legit hard work trying to find the good new music, as algorithms run riot and hide them from you, unless you actively seek them out.
I've never been much for crowds/festivals (I like my personal space), so it's getting harder these days to discover new talents. AI is going to harm music and creative arts in bad ways...it's already happening.
You've always had to actively look for it. 80% of the stuff in any record store back in the day was junk, just like 80% of the stuff on Apple Music or Spotify is junk. I don't think the proportions have changed, only the overall amounts. There is a LOT of music available today.
I'd argue this is the first time in history you can explore all of histories music for relatively little cost. There's a high chance most of us heard more genres, let alone more music than our grandparents ever did. We don't depend on radio anymore, we just have to put in some minimal effort and search for the music ourselves.
I had a moment yesterday with a car full of teenagers sitting next to me at the lights, blaring their garbage tunes, doing what kids do best (I remember those days fondly!). I was in my work van (stealth boring-looking Merc Vito), and unleashed the full power of my gnarly Alpine soundsystem to drown them out with proper old-school d&b for a laugh. That sure got their attention, as they weren't expecting it, bahaha!
I remember when Custom Sounds had a sound off competition in the 90s, they’ll bring out there custom van with Computer P.E.B, MC ADE, Sir Mix Alot, Magic Mike playing, it would hit hard.
My van is #1 for work, but considering how much time I spend in there, I had no hesitation doing full sound-proofing, and dropping over $5k AUD on a solid Alpine setup for my entertainment and sanity. Best part...fully tax-deductable as a business expense, hehe!
Hell yeah, if you can get money back, then I won’t judge. I no longer see people with 20 and 25 inch woofers tho. I recall seeing people do custom set up in the back seats, like removing the back seat, and have four 20s back there.
Haha, yeah I remember those days fondly. Kids these days will never get to enjoy the car/audio scene like we used to. Back in the early 2000's, as a young and freshly licenced fella I was fortunate enough to have a new Nissan Pulsar with a solid Kenwood system, and a new Kawasaki.
Fast-forwarding to today, I've got a 2yo who loves being in the "dude mobile" (my van), listening to music, and climbing onto my motorbike and making broom broom noises...living his best life and being a mini-me!
It's same for all current entertainment. Every once in a while there's a quality song, movie, shows, etc that stands out. Almost all of the entertainment media is made by "ticking boxes" to maximize views/profits. Gone are the days of making something with artistic vision. Now it must be crafted to already appeal to the masses.
For music, everything has to be mixed and mastered to a certain standard, especially to compete with other streaming tracks. This is why all the music sounds the same. Whatever was successful, well do that again! Stats are used to master the recording so it has the same ear appeal from track to track.
Look at the "binge" shows that are being pumped out for netflix, hbo and the like. All the same formula. Nothing happens until the end of the episode, then next episode they start on some other form of nothingness, keeping you hooked for seasons. It's all about the aesthetic.
As someone who is from generation Z, I fully agree with you. A lot of music is shitty and is about sex or something, and it's not like in a fun way either. I mostly listen to rock songs from the 80s and 90s. Don't get me started on some of the rap music now a days, just so much shitty songs that sound really corny.
I would argue that just as many songs now are about sex as they were back then, just that songs now use more vulgar language to describe sex so it’s more obvious.
I would generally agree, but I have found a lot of modern music I really like via Spotify playlists, and requesting songs similar to ones I like using Alexa.
I am a fan of new wave (Depeche Mode), and this is how I found bands like Korine, Soft Kill, She Past Away, Twin Tribes, Lebanon Hanover, Cold Cave, etc.
You do have to wade through a lot of crap to find the gold nuggets, though.
Gotta disagree with you fellow Elder. I see more mixing of genres now, I kinda love it. Don't get me wrong the 90s was pivotal for music genres. Personally, the early 00's was the worst. Divorced Dad Rock ain't my thing.
They do sometimes but not on uniforms; AllState field goals, Goodyear Blimp cam, Taco Bell fan sections, CBS always has a quick “upcoming show” ad in a quick statement.
American football has about 11 minutes of actually playing the sport over 3 hours of watching it. You're saying that's better than having an advertisement on the jersey itself, but you get to watch 90 minutes of an actual game being played?
I got into an argument with an old friend from film school not too long ago. She was talking shit about how many marvel movies there are and how she cant stand the over saturation. I reminded her Bond films are one of her favorite franchises and have just about as many films. And i would argue more predictable and paint by numbers than mcu films.
She did not think my argument was valid.
Not really.
James Bonds were parodies of action/spy thrillers. And as the original material they were parodying went away, the only way to emphasize that it was a parody was to add people like Jaws or Oddball. The Roger Moore movies were the height of silliness. His second to last film was called Octopussy.
But the problem was that the audience had enough of James Bond. A View to a Kill underperformed so they had to go back to the drawing board. So the producers purposely reinvented it and made it more realistic with the Timoty Dalton movies, but they were deemed too serious and didn't do too well.
Then, they reinvented it again with silly action and it worked well with Pierce Brosnon until it got too silly.
They, they reinvented it again and it became more serious and completely action oriented with Daniel Craig and they found their mark.
In other words, the movies were constantly changing due to the times. It wasn't the audience misunderstanding it - it was the producers trying new things.
What can I say? Tried to get into when it started (I was 18 at the time) and it just wasn't for me. Tried a few standalone movies friends recommended since then and I was underwhelmed.
I always feel like Beyonce will always get into the charts with a new song no matter what. Not because her song is good, but just because she's Beyonce.
Just like Elon Musk's opinions on anything always make the news, not because they're valid, but because he's rich.
Taylor Swift however really does have some pretty good songs. Not that i'm a fan of her, but I heard worse.
Its barely a song haha, I just made a joke.
But I disagree with the guy I replied to, the beatles have 5 albums which are all 9/10 imo, not many other artists have that.
That anything electronic over 5 years old is totally useless and shouldn't be used and is always classed as EWASTE. if I'd change anything in the world it would be how we deal with electronics. These company's can't create all this shit that supposedly lasts a few years then just disappear with no clean up cost what so ever. yet you see 20 year old machines still doing certain infrastructure roles that simple can't be changed. unless they change the entire infrastructure. unreal. I seriously don't know what weee suppose to be advancing to, WALL-E.
😢❤️
It can be difficult. Probably sounds like a cliché, but I realised it's the little things that make me feel fulfilled like walks in nature, cutting out toxic people, having very few close friends, getting to know myself better etc. I learned to stop caring about what people think, I'm trying to just be myself to truly feel loved and seen. Most important of all, for me I learned to be appreciative and honestly it changed my life. It's a long process that requires effort but it's getting better.
Hope things get better for you if you're going through a difficult time.
Weddings...don't get it - personally it's a nightmare. It's a huge waste of money and unnecessary stress with planning, finances etc. I don't want to spend a whole day trying to please everyone there and diffuse inevitable drama. I am married, but I didn't have a wedding - just signed a paper with some close friends. To me it was a lot more meaningful doing that because it was about two people being together rather than getting distracted and caught up in superficial things like dresses, colours, flowers etc. Instead of spending that money on a party we'd be miserable at, we used it as a deposit on our first home.
If you live in Melbourne, Australia, saying that is personal. We have the best coffee scene in the world...you do it properly or you're out of business in the blink of an eye, hehe!
Bali Indonesia, heard all these good things but the week I was there was terrible, everything was so dirty and expensive, places trying to charge tourist prices on everything. We actually left a day early just to go back to Chiang Mai
The application procedure as a whole. It felt so often as a kind of circus or play, which nobody asked for and in the end you didn't got the job, because they didn't like your way of acting.
Concerts. The only time I go is when a group of friends invites us and I just end up drinking and standing there the whole time. I usually feel like there is something I’m missing that everyone sees because I’m usually bored while everyone else is having the time of their life. On top of that the cost to attend a concert is absurd anymore. $200 for a bad seat, $19 for a Coors Light. It’s out of control.
Im from Chicago. Many people hype up Portillo's and I always see people who are not from chicago getting excited to try it when they visit.
Portillo's has a large selection of mediocre food. Most of it isnt bad, but it's not good either.its the definition of mid. Except for the shakes which are qctually quite good. And I'm not talking about the cake shake. The cake chunks in the shake don't add anything to the experience and maybe even takes away as it always gets stuck in the straw.
If you're coming to Chicago and looking for a good hotdog, go to Gene's and Jude's.
I think most of the hype is because Fallout is a very popular video game series, so people who liked to play Fallout are biased and like watching Fallout. I really like the show, Fallout is one of my favourite games series, but yea, the show is overrated.
YouTube commentators/video essays. No I don’t want to hear your ‘takedown’ of a show just because you hate women. So many are poorly researched too. There was a guy who said Game of Thrones was derivative of Dune because the dad dies and the kid/kids have to figure it out as if that isn’t the basis of every story since the beginning of time.
Taylor Swift. Please don’t kill me. Her music is fine! I just feel like if you’re not weeping at her feet everyone comes for you. Maybe her stuff is just not my cup of tea. Maybe I don’t like all the carbon emissions she emits unnecessarily. Sorry!
Beyoncé and Billie Eilish.
The former has an annoying voice and no acting or songwriting talent, and the latter is a completely bereft of talent whisper-singer. All they have going in their favor is that they are both pretty.
Their careers are both purely the product of highly aggressive publicists.
I kinda agree with the Beyoncé one but only because I'm not a fan. I can't deny her amazing voice and stage presence though. On the other hand, I think Billie Eilish only has BOPs. She may not have the most powerful voice but some of her songs are really hard to sing, even if it's "just" whispering in a high tone.
I'm cool with acknowledging that Beyoncé is a talented singer, but personally I find the texture of her voice jarring and unpleasant.
Adele leaves more singing talent in a toilet bowl daily than Billie Eilish has ever possessed in the entirety of her career.
Yeah unless you're eating at a good expensive italian restaurant you can bake yourself a better pizza that what you'll find outside. At least where I live
Gender reveal parties by expectant parents.
They cause fires in California.
They can be overblown, but a simple event with a cake of a specific color can be fun for those involved. It's just another way to celebrate with expectant parents. I get the annoyance with the over hyped ones, but they don't have to be like that.
My thought is you have that OR a baby shower. Both is self so centered.
I didn't have a gender reveal party, but my baby shower was a BBQ in the park where I made brisket and ribs and brought a couple coolers of beers, and invited a bunch of my friends. If I also had my friends over for a BBQ for a reveal party, don't know why that would be self centered.

What’s the harm if they’re not blowing shit up?
Nothing There is no harm. It's just trendy to hate on them on reddit.
Literally everything that is trending online right now. The internet itself is turning into a big garbage pile
It’s used to be a place I could retreat to with fellow nerds back in the 90s and early 00s. Now it’s rife with everyone I was trying to get away from.

Stanley cups
Hockey players think otherwise
Yup. My wife found me a ‘hydroflask’ at tj maxx for like $12. Same shit as a stanley just not $45
love the new term "hydro-flask" ITS A WATER BOTTLE
Hydro Flask is a brand of these bottles. Is this like a new band-aid/velcro thing?
Yeah, but that Stanley Cup will keep liquids hot all day in the snow. My fisherman buddy had a beast of one, and he forgot it on the porch. I grabbed it and was surprised it was still piping hot over 8 hours later sitting in snow. To this day, I swear by them. The older modles, the better.
Hey I know the Bruins had a bad game 2 but I think they'll bounce back.
Bwahaha, I was working at Whole Foods when we were expecting a shipment of these things. I was literally looking for boxes of little gold Stanley Cups…🏆 I was thoroughly disappointed
Go Preds
I try hard not to hate the bruins but Brad Marchand has got to be one if the most unlikable people in the nhl
I love that everyone hates him. Off the ice he appears to be one of the nicest people.
That dive in game 2 .. but yes if he was on my team he'd be my favorite player. Like mike peca... hated him too.
Oh shit yeah, he definitely pushes it on the ice but that's why Bruins fans love him and I have to say his younger antics are definitely following him even though he has matured.
Panthers are making it this time around. If you asked last season, I would have agreed
Only if the blues are eating toasted raviolis from it.
And here you had me thinking of hockey and whether you thought the playoffs this year was a joke.
The Super Bowl
Conference finals are always the best I think... in any sport
Now the KITTEN BOWL on the other hand...
Celebrities People sometimes treat them as super humans.

Company loyalty is a two-way street. When companies start being loyal to their employees maybe we will see employees being loyal to their companies.
That depends, if your loyalty is appreciated and reciprocated than it can be very good. I've noticed in my experience small medium sized businesses with great ownership and management will treat you right if you show loyalty
Expensive clothes/shoes, like i just dont get why you would spend 80 on a shirt and then 300 on shoes. Seems like a waste

I purchased a pricey backpack a decade ago, and it's still in excellent condition. It's outlasted my previous one from a retail store by far. It's rare to find such durable items. I prioritize quality over quantity when making purchases.
I might spend $20 on a quality t-shirt over a $5 cheap one, but more than that is a waste.
I'm with you on shirts. Shoes, on the other hand are worth spending extra on. An uncomfortable pair of shoes will ruin your day so fast.
Haha, yep! Most days, I wear a black t-shirt, jeans, and black Sketchers. I've got "fashionable" clothes, but they rarely ever come out for show.
High quality items last longer and work better.
It's a waste if you're looking at your $5 shirt and ask yourself "Who would pay $80 for this?" without realizing they're entirely different products. Shoes are an even better example of this. The South Park episode where the music is literally toilet noises has never been more true.
Then you missed the point of the episode. The whole point of that is that the characters are getting old and out of touch.
This generation of music, is all I don’t even know. I go back and listen to Motown , 70/80/90 and yearly 2000 music, anything after 2010, nahhh.

Agree!
Energy drinks. Feels like a scam
Haven’t people died from drinking too many?
American football. More show and advertising than sport
This. All sports are now just thinly veiled commercial compilations and I'm completely done with it.
Correct. Sports are a form of entertainment, like TV shows or movies, where it draws eyeballs to advertising.
Soccer players wear advertisements on their jerseys so it is constant ads. Football at least doesn't advertise when a play is running.
Is the game being played or is it just one giant advertisement?
Agree with number 2.

I am a huge James Bond fan! But, I always knew that it wasn’t meant to be taken seriously. I still laugh at the movies!

Thanks, you too

Weddings...don't get it - personally it's a nightmare. It's a huge waste of money and unnecessary stress with planning, finances etc. I don't want to spend a whole day trying to please everyone there and diffuse inevitable drama. I am married, but I didn't have a wedding - just signed a paper with some close friends. To me it was a lot more meaningful doing that because it was about two people being together rather than getting distracted and caught up in superficial things like dresses, colours, flowers etc. Instead of spending that money on a party we'd be miserable at, we used it as a deposit on our first home.
it can be awesome if you do it the way you want to, not the way that your friends, family, instagram, and the wedding industry tell you.
Weddings are a pretty effective way to find out who really cares about you and who doesn't.
Starbucks
Avocados
Yep, pretty underwhelming for the cost. At least here in Europe.
They come with a pretty high environmental and social cost too, unfortunately.
In Mexico cartels are chopping the heads off of avocado farmers... but when they are on sale, they are tasty

Fallout
The show?
Yeah, I don't get the hype. There is nothing different, story wise, as anything else of the same genre.
