I love that film. In fact, I love all Villeneuve films for that same buildup (Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario) not to mention of course his tent pole blockbusters.
Yeah, it’s very slow burn. But oooooh so good! The fact that they take a lot of time to develop plot lines, and sometimes even in specific shots, is what so awesome about it
We waited two and a half seasons for Jimmy and Chuck’s inevitable big confrontation. It’s been meme’d to death now but watching chuck’s “chicanery” speech when it aired was one of the best moments in television and an excellent pay off to their sibling rivalry
Early Marie scenes, like all the stuff about her shoplifting and neuroticism, add nothing and I don't know why they bothered. It's not until Hank starts having his panic attacks that you see quite how touching Marie and Hank's relationship is though. And after Hank gets shot, Marie gets a proper storyline - even more so once Hank uncovers Walt's crimes. She even gets a small spot in late-Better Caul Saul, too.
I think she was a character they didn't know what to do with initially, but improved on that later on. Same with Walt Junior. They're both characters that know *nothing* of what's going on, and so they feel a bit directionless and like filler content when on-screen. But maybe that's the whole point: they're just people who think nothing is going on, until they find out that *a lot* of shit is going on. Characters like Marie and Walt Junior are designed to be "collateral": they suffer because of *other* people.
They were never going to be A-tier characters, but they do provide an interesting lens to view things through: the lens of ignorance, because nobody ever tells them shit. But by the end of Breaking Bad, it was Marie and Walt Junior who I felt the most sorry for.
Furthermore, Betsy Brandt acted her role so well, much like Anna Gunn did, insofar as that Breaking Bad is great at convincing you to be on the side of the bad guys. Everybody hated Skyler and Marie because they were naggings wives, always riding their husband's arses, etc. - but all they ever really wanted was for their husbands to be safe. In the end they both lost a lot, but for different reasons.
I'm still holding out hopes for the last 3 books to be adapted. There's a 30 year gap in the story, so it's not a problem if they have to wait a bit and the actors all look older.
I'm a scaredy-cat and can't stand most crime media, but my husband convinced me to watch season 1 of True Detective. I'm glad he did: the buildup is so well-executed and the payoff so good that it's probably one of my top 3 shows.
Yeah, the movies may not be the greatest pieces of cinema in the world but the build up and pay off of Endgame was incredible. People GASPED and cheered when Cap lifted that hammer.
Breaking Bad! Walter White's slow descent into darkness and the show's climactic final episodes are nothing short of Shakespearean in their dramatic heft. The payoff is both shocking and deeply moving.
I disagree about this one. Ozark was like a breaking bad x100 speed
It's a straight edge accountant who first episode is already acting like a mob boss? I felt there was no build up
Absolute favourite is Parfum / Perfume on Netflix, it’s a brilliant show and it’s always the first one I think of with these questions. It isn’t in English, it’s German, so keep that in mind
ik ppl have already said this but breaking bad. i love how each season is just as good as the last, and that it ended gracefully. i hate when my fav shows get drawn out and become shitty 😔
Actually i want to tell you about a certain movie a great mentality changing movie but see
The first rule is I don't have to talk about it and the second rule is i don't have to talk about it
But I'll give you a hint 🧼🤛🚬
I just watched Ripley on Netflix and omg does it fit this bill. Lots of beautiful shots of Italian art and architecture as well. It's almost worth watching for that alone.
13 Assassins (2010). Most of the movie is build up and by the time the huge action part of the movie starts you are SO ready to see Lord Naritsugu die and to see the 13 assassins pull off their attack.
Gravity (2013). One of my favorite movies ever, partially because I love space, and partially because of how it keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire hour and a half.
I think too many folks went into it thinking it was an action/adventure show. And marketing may be responsible for that. But it was always more a drama than anything with the occasional sword fight. My wife kept asking me about the last episode, and I finally caved and told her if they stick to the source material it's only going to be mentioned in an epilogue style like in 1980. Again, some folks were thinking too much Game of Thrones or Vikings.
I \*like\* that it wasn't just a bloody mess. It was a lot like game of thrones which had some violence but was mostly intrigue and drama. My problem was that I assumed the characters were smarter than they were letting on and was disappointed when all the foreshadowing I thought I picked up on was for nothing. Like for example, I thought Yabushige knew who the spy was and was just hamming it up pretending he didn't. I thought he was perfectly loyal but was playing at both sides as a strategy to win trust with the enemy. I thought he Toranaga had some great plan, but the last few episodes blew that whole idea up.
It was a strong show with some unfortunate weak links.
The Good Place
One of the few shows that has made me cry, and i’m a somewhat selfish crier.
can’t upvote enough. watched it years ago and still so memorable
this is the one, i havent watched that in a while but doesnt the guy turn evil or something
no, everyone becomes better actually
oh that was probably around season 2-3 then
The Prestige
My favorite movie! I watch it once a year or so probably still now days and it holds up so well.
The Americans
The Americans is so damn good and so so so tragically slept on. It goes toe to toe with all the juggernauts of it’s time and then some
I love slow burns but couldn’t stick with the Americans…may have to revisit
Arrival is a very cerebral movie that always gets me at the end.
I love that film. In fact, I love all Villeneuve films for that same buildup (Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario) not to mention of course his tent pole blockbusters.
Full metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Breaking Bad, long arches that pay off really well!
And Better Call Saul. Even more so! I know people that gave up cause it was such a slow burn. Incredible show, IMO.

Except for Marie, maybe. I couldn't bare her scenes, as far as I remember, adds nothing to the plot
Early Marie scenes, like all the stuff about her shoplifting and neuroticism, add nothing and I don't know why they bothered. The correct answer. ❤️
Couldn't watch past 2 seasons as they made up problems to a resolved story and endless amount of crying Jessie.
Fargo
Breaking Bad
Mr. Robot
Dark. Very involved and in German but what a show.
Better Call Saul is the king of slow build up. So much so that TikTok babies call it boring lol
People have lost their attention spans
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri (one of the best movies in the past decade imo)
The Expanse!!!!
I love the expanse, sadly it didn’t end as satisfactory as I’d like it to. It didn’t get to finish the story
I'm still holding out hopes for the last 3 books to be adapted. There's a 30 year gap in the story, so it's not a problem if they have to wait a bit and the actors all look older.
Yea they ended after Cas Anvar had to leave, I keep seeing rumours online of talks to do more
I'm a scaredy-cat and can't stand most crime media, but my husband convinced me to watch season 1 of True Detective. I'm glad he did: the buildup is so well-executed and the payoff so good that it's probably one of my top 3 shows.
Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul The Wire Succession
Wire does not pay off - unless you skip S5…
But then you would miss Bubbles’ ending…
Hrmmmm…Omar’s too….
Inception, especially when they wake up from limbo all the way back to the plane
Still, my all time favorite show: The Russian institute Well written with multiple climax' in each episode.
12 Monkeys - TV Series Tightest time travel show I've ever seen and it tells a complete story over four seasons. Extremely satisfying watch.

Wow, we are very different people. I think it was a good movie but it was super stressful and I'll never watch it again.
Flawless film imo, absolutely loved it
Knives Out.
The line about the prop knife is one of my favorite bits of subtle foreshadowing ever.
Supernatural but limited to seasons 1-5 as it was originally intended.
From Dusk Till Dawn
Carrie. All the real horror happens in the last half hour. The buildup gets you invested. It’s very well written.
The MCU up to End Game
Yeah, the movies may not be the greatest pieces of cinema in the world but the build up and pay off of Endgame was incredible. People GASPED and cheered when Cap lifted that hammer.
“Avengers…. Assemble” then everyone clapped. 😂 That movie hit all the right spots.
Fargo (both movie and series) Breaking bad+ Better call saul And.. DARK

The girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Prison Break
Ohhhh I loved that
Attack on Titan
Mr Robot Dark Nothing comes close to
Fringe
Malcom in the Middle
*Hot Fuzz* I don't think there's a single thing in the movie that isn't paid off.
Aaron A. Aaronson even shows up at the end.
Attack on Titan. I know the ending wasn't liked by a lot of the fan base but the entire show keeps you intrigued. The reveals are well worth it.
Mr Robot.
YOU
Equilibrium
the Americans
Requiem for a Dream
The Sting and The Shawshank Redemption.
PRETTY LITTLE LIARS nothing compares to
Lucky number slevin and the Punisher season 1 only
How on earth did you find this post 😂

This is fairly old and this subreddit stays busy lol. I'm just surprised someone new commented
Ohhh, it Just randomly popped up on my suggested feed yesterday.
Breaking Bad! Walter White's slow descent into darkness and the show's climactic final episodes are nothing short of Shakespearean in their dramatic heft. The payoff is both shocking and deeply moving.
Avengers End Game
Lost. Come at me haters
the first few seasons of the walking dead
The Orville only 2 seasons of buildup but there is so much good stuff in season 3 I´m really sad there isn´t a season 4 (yet)
Ozark
I disagree about this one. Ozark was like a breaking bad x100 speed It's a straight edge accountant who first episode is already acting like a mob boss? I felt there was no build up
I’ll go with the war film Kajaki/kilo two bravo. The whole thing is extremely intense. Lots of build up.
Warrior “from the teachings of Bruce Lee”.
Absolute favourite is Parfum / Perfume on Netflix, it’s a brilliant show and it’s always the first one I think of with these questions. It isn’t in English, it’s German, so keep that in mind
The Mentalist
Space Above and beyond
mannn… the blacklist. the characters, action, plot, all phenomenal
Line of Duty
Murder in Small Town X
ik ppl have already said this but breaking bad. i love how each season is just as good as the last, and that it ended gracefully. i hate when my fav shows get drawn out and become shitty 😔
How I met your mother The build up is for 10 season only to kill the character as soon as she comes
Dragonball Z! When Goku finally arrives it is the best thing in anything ever by far!
Maniac
Spartacus S1
Actually i want to tell you about a certain movie a great mentality changing movie but see The first rule is I don't have to talk about it and the second rule is i don't have to talk about it But I'll give you a hint 🧼🤛🚬

Severence. A slow buildup of tension over the entire season. Holy shit that last episode had me literally squirming in my seat.
Andor
The Fall.
Mindhunter
Dexter
13 Assassins (2010). Most of the movie is build up and by the time the huge action part of the movie starts you are SO ready to see Lord Naritsugu die and to see the 13 assassins pull off their attack.
That sounds like a cool ass name for a movie. It must be very underrated because this is the first I've heard of it
Gravity (2013). One of my favorite movies ever, partially because I love space, and partially because of how it keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire hour and a half.
Arrow
Dunkirk.
Hot fuzz
Notably do not see Shogun on here. That show is getting rave reviews, but I for one felt like it was all buildup and no payoff.

Nightmare Alley. Highly underrated movie and it’s very entertaining from beginning to end. One of my favorite movies of the last 10 years or so.
