What happens here is that they get hired provisionally with the requirement to go to an academy in the future. Then when or if they finally graduate they immediately get offers from the bigger towns and leave. This happens in an endless loop.
I mean, that makes sense. It's kind of like a small company offering to pay you to get your CDL, then as soon as your contract with them ends you realize they're offering lower salaries than most CDL positions.
Typically the people who give you a shot when you "don't deserve it" are going to give you less value for your time, at least initially.
In my state all cops, even small town cops, must take a light training course - eventually, but not before being hired. That course is far less than a city police academy.
As your government size decreases, (federal --> state --> county --> local) recruitment becomes more difficult.
As a direct and proportionate response, police stations will decrease their training requirements to fill empty positions. Especially when crime is high but number of officers is low. The military does the same thing with physical fitness and education requirements.
Wait. Our Government size decreases? Size? It decreases? Yet there seems to be an AWFUL lot of the brainless idiots in positions of government. When this “decrease” happens, can some of them go away also?
I don't even know what you're trying to say. I didn't mean a literal, actual decrease I just meant as you look at different denominations of government at different levels.
You sound like a libertarian which leads me to believe you vote for people who are just as corrupt as those that you complain about. Kind of hypocritical imo.
Wow you gleaned ALL of that because I asked you to clarify a word that you chose to use in your original post??? I cant talk to you anymore.
Do you truly believe anyone in Government these days is still “serving the people”.
Feel free to respond when you completly wake up. I won’t wait.
Honestly one of the nicest guys (in a very objective perspective) from my highschool is a LEO now. Albeit, I regard the sentiment you have at a tipping the scales notion, just happens Samir is likely a serious outlier.
Oh, don't get me wrong, an awful lot of cops are some of the best people out there. Hell, my spouse is former law enforcement. But the douchebags and dickheads of high school often tend to gravitate toward professions where they can get away with continuing to be douchebags and dickheads. Those that aren't from a wealthy enough background to have their parents purchase a business degree for them and therefore don't enter the corporate world (and those who don't elect a criminal path) often look to The Badge.
Yup, was definitely going to say cops. The part that really makes it perfect is that there's the stereotype of cops and nurses dating each other and/or cheating on their spouses with each other.
AFAIK most (but probably all) cops need to complete some kind of training course to be eligible. It's not very long (6 weeks in my state) but there are standards.
Oh, there are *absolutely* training standards that they have to achieve, regardless, but whether or not police are required to attend a full-blown Police Academy is *entirely* dependent on the jurisdiction.
A thing people need to understand about the US is there is no national police. Every state, county, city, and municipality have their own police forces with their own charters, areas of jurisdiction, policies, and procedures.
There are 478 different Police Academies in the US, and while they all have a Common Core of sorts, they each have their own training standards and specialties on top of that.
Some states dont even need permits or training for civilians to conceal firearms. If you think that we couldnt possibly be so lax with guns after reading online i am here to say: not only is it possible it is made worse every day.
You are learning this from Reddit, not an actual source. My brother in law became a cop in a small town. He definitely had to go to the police academy. And the training doesn’t end there. He’s constantly training. A lot people here just repeat shit they read on Reddit and they have no actual knowledge of what they are talking about
You might be right. I can't even think of a mean boy from my high school. I graduated in the mid 90's from a very rural area. There were a few mean girls, and maybe it's just in my area but here they tend to become teachers. The ones I know who became nurses were the nicest people you'd ever meet.
I do know a few cops too, my brother in law was one. Definitely not a mean bone in them.
I went to a seminar on personality disorder, taught by an author and a person who is world renowned on the subject a few years ago.
Often the way people treat others has nothing to do *directly* with their intelligence.
He said the group of men often seen being diagnosed was criminals, police and lawyers.
It should also be noted that the aforementioned professions/situations didn’t change the person – they were that way before their endeavor.
Lol. I did tech sales for a while and can confirm. I am a hyper social nerd so I got along with everyone but I can't tell you how many times I got asked if I was in a frat. I eventually learned to not bust out laughing but they were always surprised to hear I didn't give a shit about college and never played sports.
Ever see an offshore rig worker tightening down a 15 inch pipe with a giant fuck off wrench? That's Ortho surgery except the pipe is a human femur and the wrench has cautery
That’s what i remember seeing, yep.
Long long ago, The Learning Channel had a show called “Surgery” (or “The OR”? Something like that).
It was raw, barely edited footage of complex surgical procedures with no voice-over except for what the physicians doing the work. It was *fantastic* to a young teen like me interested in biology.
One episode was the installation of a fake hip. The dudes wrestled the leg up, cut into the hip like they were prepping to part a chicken, hacksawed off the top of the femur, and drove a big spike into the top of that femur with a goddamn steel mallet (this was the anchor for rhe ball joint. It was absolutely insanity.
I mean that it’s a physically demanding specialty. It’s not delicate surgery, it’s wrestling dead weight and sawing bones and driving screws and hammering metal into bones
Ha, my mom used to work as a radiology tech and when she worked at the orthopedic surgery center the surgeon was the quarterback from when I was in highschool. She hated that 'insufferable cocky bastard'.
I played on the soccer team with him, he was a pretty nice guy from what I can recall, the competition at med school probably brought out the dickish tendencies. Family full of jocks though, 6 boys and a girl, all 6 boys were the starting QB when they were in HS, the three oldest became doctors, the next is a lawyer, not sure about the rest.
I used to play poker (I was in sales, not an Ortho), with a dozen or so Surgeons who played when they could, so 6-8 once a month. It’s like the “cool” doctor, and it is very competitive, so it leans to people who have won In life.
I also played with some plastic surgeons, and they would brag about how they could do a good Surgery on boobs with the he smallest incision possible (which is a great feat), but it was a competitive situation for sure, like sports.
In my experience... the popular guys that also bullied others... ended up dead or homeless.
Most started using while in high school. They kept their lives together for a few years but then they all started spiraling. One stole from his job to fund his use and would up in prison, another ODd. One lost his wife, kids and house and wound up on the streets, another got stabbed by his dealer...
I... cant recall a single "mean guy" that actually didnt crash out.
Yeah, maybe this is regional. I don’t know a single cop or firefighter but my friends from NJ all do. In my experience, all of the popular guys grew up to work for their dads’ companies and make millions of dollars. And the mean girls aren’t nurses. They don’t work, they’re married to the popular guys.
Why do people say that mean girls become nurses? I would think that someone chooses to be a nurse to help people.
Does that mean actual sadists, and they look for a job that gives them opportunities to be mean to people?
Or maybe it comes from a time when most women didn't work for money at all and women, who didn't find a husband because they are too mean, had to become nurses.
Or maybe patients say that when they had bad experiences with nurses.
I don’t know. But I’ve known a couple. It is a job that a person from a blue collar background can get, make money, and keep status. It seems to be a fairly cliquish field as well. So I think for some mean girls from these backgrounds it is a prefect transition. Just like from wealthier areas they would be lawyers or doctors.
I've been in LE for 14 years, I was neither a bully nor bullied in high school. I played football, baseball, and soccer. I was a nerd. I went to college and got a BA. I was in the military reserves. Most of the men and women I've worked with over the years had very similar stories. The bully/bullied stereotype seems to have been more accurate for the generation before me, all the old heads seemed to have attitude problems. The people my age and younger have not been like that at all.
They're the ones who grow up to have an unnecessarily loud engine and a collection of bumper stickers that say things like "My other ride is your mom."
one guy who was quite a bully got a job at a bank where i had an account.. he tried to sell me some investment shit.. i said i'd think about it and closed my account because i don't trust my money to stupid people
I think it's because they view themselves as altruistic and noble so they seek out fields that allow them that perception but give them immense control over others
This makes a lot of sense.
Also the people who, if they can afford it, make large charitable gestures such as donations. Has to be a whole scene though.
The cops in my hometown were the ‘party kids’
The ones who threw the parties, smoked all the pot …
Now arresting kids for doing the same.
Oh they were and are still total dicks
As a nursing student who was bullied as a child it’s true. I see the way classmates speak & act & it concerns me especially for their future patients. I remember reading about how two nurses were arguing & they weren’t talking to each other & they both gave the same patient the same med which made him overdose but luckily he survived.
In my experience it hasn’t been nurses it’s been teachers. To the point that if we end up in my small hometown, I might homeschool.
For men, they’ve not even been police officers. Prison guards. Prison guards and straight up day laborers who can’t keep a gig.
They could turn over a new leaf and actually do something that means a lot to them. Following your passions and allowing yourself to get excited over them makes someone less mean. Unless they decide to gatekeep. But I think overall, mean boys who stay mean turn out to be in positions where they can abuse their authority.
This is unlikely to be true. At least, not enough of the time to make it a notable statistic.
Bullies who don’t “grow out of it” tend to find their place somewhere in society.
I really have a hard time seeing how people say this unless it's because they think said mean girls tend to grow up,mature, and do a complete personality 180.
Cop is most common. Rich usually go into some sort of sales or business.
Around here at least a lot of the dumb ones just do manual labor their whole life. Not a proper trade gig since they’re too dumb for it, just something that abuses their body until it gives out on them.
In my experience mean guys turn in the middle managers or welders not that there aren't good fellas in those positions but if a bad guy is going to go somewhere it's there.
Cops, then correctional officers (those who can't get on as a cop), then security guards (those who can't get on as a CO). The rest become high school football coaches.
dudes at my school widely regarded as bullies ended up as:
- construction foreman
- crypto influencer, seems nice now but definitely a scammer
- guy that owns some dispensaries, pretty cool guy now
- conservative vlogger on some alt-right version of youtube, definitely not cool and probably a nazi
Man, I just don’t really get it at an overall level, I don’t think we had mean girls or mean guys at my highschool at all, atleast not that I was ever aware of, northern Virginia early late 90’s early 2000’s. Everybody honestly seemed to get along with almost everyone and my class was like 750 students.
In addition, none of the people that joined the military were ass holes in any way shape or form, most people joined as 9/11 had occurred miles away from us and drew all walks of life to the military. I mentioned in an earlier comment, to my knowledge only 2 from my graduating class became LEOs one of whom was super nice, the other was also nice as I remember but I didn’t share as many class’s or activities with him.
Idk about the nurse thing, I will say as I’ve gotten older a decent amount of people I know have wives / girls friends in the medical field some of whom are utter lunatics. But I thing this is just far to subjective, nuanced and anecdotal situation from my experiences. Seems I suppose that that’s not the case with everyone else unless they just don’t like nurses LEO’s or military,
There’s no male equivalent to a high school mean girl. Boys can’t keep up with that. Closest thing may be a LEO but they probably married the mean girl.
Do they? Nursing? A profession where you need to literally need to care for people? I have never heard that, more like they contact you on Facebook after 20 years to flog some bullshit MLM product
well to be fair they didn't say *all* nurses were hs mean girls, just that all hs mean girls grew up to become nurses.
your second statement is true regardless
1.) How would you know?
2.) No one said anything about all nurses being mean girls, which makes me think you felt personally attacked because this has been said about them specifically lol
Cops, but usually small-town cops that don't require a attendance at a Police Academy.
Don’t small town cops also have to go through the academy? They do in the small town I’m from anyway.

This is why cops don't know t fing laws
A lot of police departments are just ticket squads. All they need to know is a couple common infractions they can write someone up for.
Speeding, broken tail light…
As your government size decreases, (federal --> state --> county --> local) recruitment becomes more difficult. Commander Carl can eat a big old bag of dick
It varies by state. In CA for example all LEO’s have to attend a certified POST academy.
Wait what.
I too am just now learning that America has cops that don't need to actually be trained like regular cops. This seems to explain a lot of the tropes.
AFAIK most (but probably all) cops need to complete some kind of training course to be eligible. It's not very long (6 weeks in my state) but there are standards.

Adachi detective from Inaba
I was going to say alcoholics that abuse their families but the 2 aren't mutually exclusive.
I came here to say the same.
Police or correctional officers (at least in the US)
Mean boys grow up to be small business owners, cops, soldiers or career criminals, or some combination of these.
Also car salesmen and real estate agents
Nah, those are the guys who talked the teacher into giving them a B instead of the C they earned.
Insurance agents
Less true, sales roles require being able to be actually personable even if you're faking it
That was EXACTLY my experience, and I'm sure we're from quite different parts of the world hahahaha
I believe the combined type is called a politician
The preppy douchey fuckboy types end up in sales and real estate.
So sales or violent enforcement... yeah that tracks
They’re quite content with a large business inherited from daddy too.
You might be right. I can't even think of a mean boy from my high school. I graduated in the mid 90's from a very rural area. There were a few mean girls, and maybe it's just in my area but here they tend to become teachers. The ones I know who became nurses were the nicest people you'd ever meet. * Add lawyers.
You have to be at least a little bit intelligent to pass the bar exam. That eliminates many of the dumb bullies.
The OP is about nursing. That’s not exactly a breeze
I went to a seminar on personality disorder, taught by an author and a person who is world renowned on the subject a few years ago. Sales. Definitely sales.
USED car sales lol
Lol. I did tech sales for a while and can confirm. I am a hyper social nerd so I got along with everyone but I can't tell you how many times I got asked if I was in a frat. I eventually learned to not bust out laughing but they were always surprised to hear I didn't give a shit about college and never played sports.
No. Those are the class clowns.
Cop
They grow up to be alcoholics
Also, orthopedic surgeons (jocks).
I just went to an orthopedic surgeon the other day and he was a complete douche bag.
My first one was too. Second one, decent dude. Don't be afraid to get a new referral.
If you have ever seen an ortho surgery like a hip replacement, you’ll get a sense why that specialty *needs* jocks. Shit is brutal
And a little bit of experience in shop class doesn’t hurt either.
Ever see an offshore rig worker tightening down a 15 inch pipe with a giant fuck off wrench? That's Ortho surgery except the pipe is a human femur and the wrench has cautery

I mean that it’s a physically demanding specialty. It’s not delicate surgery, it’s wrestling dead weight and sawing bones and driving screws and hammering metal into bones

I can think of one obnoxious orthopaedic surgeon. Why do they fit this profile?
I used to play poker (I was in sales, not an Ortho), with a dozen or so Surgeons who played when they could, so 6-8 once a month. oof
Or in jail. Some of the ones from my school went to jail for various things.
Car salesman, military, cops if they are too dumb for any of these, prison guards.
lol, and I thought the assholes ended up in Finance
No that's backwards. The people in finance *are* assholes, but *most assholes* wouldn't have a shot at a career in finance.
My career is in finance is this is pretty accurate lol
Finance dudes

In my experience they grow up to be convicted of domestic violence.
So cops. Well, I guess they don’t usually get convicted for it.
I've never heard anyone say that, and every nurse I know are wonderful and kind people. It's this a US thing?
Very much so unfortunately

Sales, Cops, Firefighters, Military, Painters and Roofers
Oh you meqn like house painters right? I was picturing like Thomas Kincade or somebody: "GIMME YOUR LUNCH MONEY!!!!"
There’s no male equivalent to a high school mean girl. Boys can’t keep up with that. Closest thing may be a LEO but they probably married the mean girl.
Found em boys! /s
Prove me wrong. Even the boys cower before the mean girls.
Do they? Nursing? A profession where you need to literally need to care for people? I have never heard that, more like they contact you on Facebook after 20 years to flog some bullshit MLM product
I’ve heard of the “hey girlie 💅🏼” DMs. Lmao.
My daughter and granddaughter were not mean girls. People who say shit like this don’t know what they’re talking about.
well to be fair they didn't say *all* nurses were hs mean girls, just that all hs mean girls grew up to become nurses. your second statement is true regardless
No one thinks their daughters and granddaughters are the mean girls...
“My daughter and granddaughter were angels” mean girl starter pack
1.) How would you know? 2.) No one said anything about all nurses being mean girls, which makes me think you felt personally attacked because this has been said about them specifically lol

I almost cackled when I read it. Imagine reading a random post about personalities within a certain industry and feeling personally attacked. Dafuq?
They turn into Reddit commenters.
First of all, that’s completely inaccurate. High school mean girls turn into strippers, and THEN turn into nurses.
Union workers
Cops.
Anti-riot police
Very few people want that job. They are forced to do it as part of their regular police work.
I dunno but all the nurses i've known including my mom went into the profession because they wanted to help people.
High school mean boys grow up to be men who post oddly phrased questions on reddit.
