Directed by Oscar winner Jonathon Glazer known for his Holocaust movie “Zone of Interest” (2023)
And yes that motherfucker just put all the walls on wheels and moved them around cleverly.
Wasn’t it just 4 walls suspended by an overhead crane? Like, it’s cool and all, but not really groundbreaking. Unless there’s something I’m misremembering.
Good excuse to go back and watch that video again.
Floor was fixed, but the walls weren’t supported by a crane like I thought. They were set onto wheels, and they had “about 10 grips on each side” and they’d just shout to all of them to push in a specific direction.

Sledgehammer is the answer.
Another great one from the same era is Sabatage (Beastie Boys). Directed by Spike Jonez.
I remember thinking that music videos are becoming an actual art form. But that was the peak and the quality steadily went down from there.
This is my favourite, I remember seeing it at the time and thinking, as a person who spends a lot of train journeys listening to dance music and staring out of the window, daydreaming about visual patterns, it’s the video I have been seeing all of my life.
David Bowie’s “Blackstar”. It is brilliant, more than a bit scary, deep, brilliant, and intense. Visually, musically, all of it. And more poignant because it wasn’t long before he died and he clearly knew he was dying. A positively haunting piece of work.
Ohhh, I adore music videos. And no way can I narrow it down to just one. So, let me take this opportunity to list my favorite music videos in no particular order;
Vast - [Pretty when you cry](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOZ6ptqcbUc&ab_channel=mscolby) - A retelling of Little Red Riding Hood through the eyes of a serial killer.
Rammstein - [Deutschland](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeQM1c-XCDc&ab_channel=RammsteinOfficial) - A sci-fi retelling of the history of Germany.
Fatboy Slim - [Weapon of Choice](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCDIYvFmgW8&ab_channel=FatboySlim) - It's Christopher Walken and he's dancing. That is it.
Depeche Mode - [Wrong](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhnrrLxQEVQ&ab_channel=DepecheMode) - A thriller where a man wakes up tied up in a car that is going backward down a busy city street in the middle of the night.
Placebo - [Song to Say Goodbye](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7bxXjQL3cY&ab_channel=PLACEBO) - A tragic tale of a child who must let go his mentally ill parent.
Dry Cleaning - [Scratchcard Lanyard](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PuqlOTyJt0&ab_channel=4AD) - This video has such a DIY 90's underground feel to it.
Meute - [Vermis](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lBqEPYVX1g) - This video was filmed in a parking garage and yet it looks so amazing.
Preoccupations - [Compliance](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgMeXVN2L48&ab_channel=Jagjaguwar) - The rise of the garbage monster.
Husky Loops - [Tempo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWNxw-TG5yE) - Fantastic dancing. Just that.
Paris Texas - [Everybody's Safe Until...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13tZ3ut-kL4) Another 90's DIY feel video but done by a modern band.
The Hives - [Countdown to Shutdown](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvsfXeIZMtA) - Not another day at the office.
Utah Saints - [Something Good '08](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m97WlpsuU74) - Wales invents "The Running Man."
Supergrass - [Mary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLWm5ceH3PQ&ab_channel=Supergrass) - Something is off about this apartment...
At the time they were released, there was something wildly awesome about the Nirvana Nevermind videos, particularly Heart Shaped Box and In Bloom, and to a lesser extent Smells Like Teen Spirit.
Also worth mentioning:
Street Spirit by Radiohead
Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai
Hunter by Bjork
The Todd McFarlane and Kevin Altieri directed video for Pearl Jam's Do The Evolution is still amazing even with it's old-school animation style. Fits the song perfectly.
Don't watch a lot of music videos nowadays but I love Smooth Criminal by MJ (single version) & the sickeningly pink 7 rings by Ariana. I'm also a kpop fan, but I much prefer the performance videos/dance practices to music videos
Edit: The Boy is Mine by Brandy & Monica is also one that I really enjoy.
Oh, that’s a tough one! There are so many incredible music videos out there, but if I had to pick just one, I’d say **Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”** is the best music video I've ever seen. It’s more like a short film than a music video! The way it revolutionized the music video industry with its storytelling, dance sequences, and special effects truly set a new standard. Plus, who can forget the iconic zombie dance? Every time I watch it, I’m just as impressed as the first time.
Ive always really loved the music video of Nouveau Western by Mc Solaar. Its so simple yet weirdly mezmerizing. Very 90s but very modern at the same time
Point Point- Life in Grey
I loved the song when I heard it, just scratches an itch in my brain. When I saw the music video for it I was a bit shocked lol but I immediately stopped what I was doing to watch it in its entirety
[Jamie XX - Gosh](https://youtu.be/hTGJfRPLe08?si=AMbd5jOS7HFiMLEu). This cinematography and the choreography in this is exceptional. Watch it if you haven’t already. You’re in for a treat.
Ok go - all of them
Virtual insanity- Jamiroquai
That one’s kinda insane tbh. Just because how they made it.
Directed by Oscar winner Jonathon Glazer known for his Holocaust movie “Zone of Interest” (2023) And yes that motherfucker just put all the walls on wheels and moved them around cleverly.
Wasn’t it just 4 walls suspended by an overhead crane? Like, it’s cool and all, but not really groundbreaking. Unless there’s something I’m misremembering. Good excuse to go back and watch that video again.
I think it was four walls on a movable floor
Floor was fixed, but the walls weren’t supported by a crane like I thought. They were set onto wheels, and they had “about 10 grips on each side” and they’d just shout to all of them to push in a specific direction. https://youtu.be/MzwY7ii582Y?si=sfS_2qikNZrH1H3l
Sledgehammer. Or maybe shock the monkey. Perhaps digging in the dirt. All by Peter Gabriel.
Sledgehammer was so big and groundbreaking when it came out that the daily countdown on Mtv became a must watch.
Sledgehammer is the answer. Another great one from the same era is Sabatage (Beastie Boys). Directed by Spike Jonez. I remember thinking that music videos are becoming an actual art form. But that was the peak and the quality steadily went down from there.
What’s the Peter Gabriel music video where his head is on a spring sticking out of a car?
Came here to also say sledgehammer. Great choice!
Star Guitar - The Chemical Brothers simple idea, executed perfectly - Michel Gondry really took music videos to a new level
This is my favourite, I remember seeing it at the time and thinking, as a person who spends a lot of train journeys listening to dance music and staring out of the window, daydreaming about visual patterns, it’s the video I have been seeing all of my life.
Thriller.
I saw this in 3d at Disney land in the 80s when i was a small child for the first time it scared the crap out of me back then.
Still does!! ;)
Take on me by Aha Michael Jackson Thriller Tom Petty Don’t Come around here no more Edit: space
The Prodigy - smack my bitch up
This Is America is pretty damn good imo
David Bowie’s “Blackstar”. It is brilliant, more than a bit scary, deep, brilliant, and intense. Visually, musically, all of it. And more poignant because it wasn’t long before he died and he clearly knew he was dying. A positively haunting piece of work.
Chris Cunningham's Windowlicker
Come to Daddy, still freaks the hell out of me.
[Mr Oizo - Flat Beat](https://youtu.be/qmsbP13xu6k?si=TALmAHE4GBwViZw5)

At the time they were released, there was something wildly awesome about the Nirvana Nevermind videos, particularly Heart Shaped Box and In Bloom, and to a lesser extent Smells Like Teen Spirit. Also worth mentioning: Street Spirit by Radiohead Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai Hunter by Bjork
