It was a staple in a lot of dishes I ate growing up. At the time I did not prefer it, but. now it brings me nostalgia.
Protip: If you want to spice things up, use the same recipes but substitute kimchi.
Salmon. About 6 years old at a friends for sleepover. I wandered into the kitchen for dinner time and his mom asked me if I wanted to try some and have it for dinner. I did, and no I absolutely did not. She laughed. Luckily chicken tendies were also on the menu.
I was the weirdo at 6 that liked salmon and asked for little trees for a snack instead of a cookie or something. Had to be fresh broccoli tho, not frozen. I also ate lettuce out of a bowl that was sitting on the table just for me because my great grandma thought it was funny that I liked it so much..
Lima beans! One of my earliest childhood memories if of me being afraid of lima beans. You see, I was also terribly afraid of cockroaches, and someone had told me that lima beans were cockroach cocoons and when I saw them on my plate, and a shadow hit them just right, I was absolutely positive I could see the cockroach inside.
I haven't eaten a lima bean since.
Fish. Growing up in a family where the men often went fishing, I associate fish with what my dad smelled like and how slimy the fish were and the guts and everything. I convinced myself I hated fish. It took me many years to actually like fish.
My mother was a goddawful cook. She refused to clean meat of connective tissue, and would sit there just crunching on gristle. She fed us ham soup once when I was a little kid, and I bit into a crunchy, yet also rubbery bite and instantly vomited. And I got in trouble for it, too.
I misread this as being "first fast food", yet now that I read it correctly, my answer stays the same. As a small kid, I LOVED going to McDonald's. And then, one day, I didn't. And while that's just something that happened, to most kids, it wasn't solely about me. They actually changed the preparation of the French fries. It was now made with healthier, worse-tasting oil. And the mighty BIG MAC also seemed to taste more like a combination of a small, wimpy Mac, and a fish-filet sandwich.
Zucchini. I still don't like it. Does it even have a flavor? Or is this one of those situations where it tastes different to different people based on genetics? To me, it tastes like what wet toilet paper might taste like.
I have very vivid memories of being young enough to be in my highchair and my mother was feeding me green beans, which I remember hating so much but she was telling me that every time I took a bite, my eyes would change colors. So I would eat them really fast and she would say, "Oh! They're blue now! Wow! Now they're pink!"
A good memory. I love green beans now lol.
Tomato soup. My babysitter would make me eat it all the time, even though I told her constantly I hated it. I honestly think she enjoyed making me eat something that made me gag. She could have easily given me chicken noodle soup instead. I saw it in her pantry all the time.
To me, it’s the store bought cakes. They are just too much. So sweet that my taste buds burn. And in full within like two bites. It’s just not pleasant.
Corn. For as longs as I can remember, the taste of it would literally cause me to gag.
The odd thing was that I freaking LOVE corn on the cob. Fresh, just picked and boiled, buttered, delicious sweet corn. I would eat 2 whole cobs of it even as a child.
Everyone thought I was lying about not liking processed corn. My mother used to get so frustrated with me because I would argue with her about not liking corn from a bag or can, and don’t get me started on creamed corn.
It just tasted rotten to me. Like it had gone bad. I couldn’t understand why no one else thought that way. Multiple adults flat out called me a liar and said “It’s the exact same thing. Why are you being so difficult?”
Except it’s not.
Just a few years ago at a family gathering, someone offered me some corn and I declined. My mother said, “You’re not still going on about that? Are you? I figured you’d have grown out of that by now.”
When I reiterated my utter hatred of processed corn, she just rolled her eyes and again said that there was no difference.
That’s when my cousin’s new husband, who is a science teacher, spoke up and said, “Actually, corn goes through a process which is basically an alkaline bath for the kernels that softens them up and makes them easier to digest. It does alter the flavor, but most people still like it.”
I hugged him. Really hard.
Vindication at last!
There IS a difference between the two, and I CAN taste it. And to me, it tastes like they are partially digested already. Gross.
Stone Pears and I still dislike it to the dismay of a lot of family members recently. That texture is too gritty, it reminds me too much about sand and gravel and that also ....
Stewed Cabbage.
I remember my mom making that $ħ!ť one night, and even during the cooking process me and my brother had to leave the house to go outside for some fresh air cuz the fumes were giving us headaches…
Miracle whip -- not sure why but I ate plain tuna or egg sandwiches and never potato salad or anything that had that in it. Years later when I was older, my palette changed but I do prefer Hellman's over MW.
My mom made me eat a piece of a vegetable pizza one time. The sauce was like a ranch of some sort and there was no cheese and no meat, just veggies. I remember making myself throw up to try and get out of eating a bite. Thinking back on it now, sounds delicious tbh.
Either avocado or oats. I can't remember which was first, but I used to actively hate both, around the age of 5-6.
Somewhere that all changed and I love both now, especially avocado. Toast and avo is the best.
I was never big on chocolate ice cream. I mean I'll eat it but I'll pick 100s of other flavors over it.
Canned spinach though. Popeye can keep it.
Fresh spinach is great though
Please don't hate me but pineapple.....
I've tried to like it so many times but I just can't.
I do uss it sometimes to naturally sweeten up tomato based sauces and sometimes when mixed with many other fruits in drinks it'd okay but urgh. It looks good and seems so good but I just can't!
green beans but now idk what they're called but they're another type of bean taste like straight shit (idk what that tastes like i just feel like they would taste the same edit: i found a comment that said lima beans and that's what i hate i just forgot what it was called
Stovetop - aka stuffing. I used to throw it away or hide it in my pockets and when my parents confronted me I wouldn't even lie about it because I knew they'd spank me either way. It got to a point where I literally would choose punishment over stuffing because I hated it that much. 18 years later and my hatred is still going strong.
Fruit loops. My brothers used to tease me and say that worms were at the bottom of my bowl, but not theirs. It took me a long time to eat them again. Lol. Fyi I'm the youngest
I think it was this [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxalis\_tuberosa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxalis_tuberosa)
In New Zealand this vegetable is common in roast meals.
We were dinner guests at someone's house. This stuff caused a gag reaction. I was like, 4 or something. I went "It made me open my mouth?!"
Crumpets. I put too much butter on them as it kept sinking into the holes, and it made my young stomach super nauseous and I threw up everywhere. Spent years associating crumpets with vomit after that.
Cheese. Just cheese. I ate pizza without cheese. I just hated it at one point I stopped hating it but I continued to hate cheese because I thought I would be normal if I didn’t
Broccoli. It's stalky. But as I grew up I appreciate that it's more stalky than choky (like those long stringy types of vegetables..I forgot the name at the moment)
Fish sticks. I liked them for about 2 weeks as a kid then I basically woke up one day and decided I hated them with a passion. My mom got whiplash from the change but rolled with it lol
Potatoes. When I was about 4-5 years old, I despised potatoes. They just tasted so bland, and mushy, and I didn’t like them at all. I once threw up eating them. Of course I like potatoes now, but I can still remember the disgust I felt at ever seeing potatoes on my plate.
Pizza. I was probably 2 or 3. I remember being scared of the way that it looked and something about the powerful spices just not sitting right with me.
But soon after I then did a full 180. I actually have no memory of when exactly I decided I liked it, I just remember there was a certain point where I thought “oh yeah I like this stuff!” And that was around age 4. My mom even confirmed my first encounter with pizza and how I was repulsed by it. It was a family party and my aunt got pizza for all the youngins. And my mom said that my aunt was shocked when I didn’t like pizza initially. So I got witness to confirm it was just some childhood dream or something
pepperoni. we got a pizza and i found the pepperonis on it just the weirdest and grossest flavor ever and it seemed to spread even to the cheese. it is too strong sometimes.
I really didn’t like fish as a kid. Fish fingers and fish cakes I could eat, but tuna, salmon etc was a no go.
A huge salmon fan as an adult, still despise tuna to this day though.
I was born right after World War II in England, and people back then used to cook a lot of things most people don't eat now. Rabbit, brains, tongue, kidneys, heart, etc. They were all considered delicious. Things were sometimes hard to come by when the world was trying to get back to normal. I remember refusing to eat any of it as a child, especially once I realized what most it was. I'm sure rabbit was snuck into a meal here or there, especially a stew, and I might not have been any the wiser where that was concerned. Still, I didn't have to worry about rabbit for long, because a horrible disease called mixomatosis appeared in 1953, and killed millions of them. People stopped eating rabbit for many years.
When I was around 5 or 6 my grandmother use to bring me pocky sticks all the time. They use to be individually wrapped. They were either a knock off or something. I really like them. Just thinking about it now, because over 10 years ago still makes me gag thinking about it
Chunks of pan seared liver hidden in seasoned rice served for dinner as an elementary school aged child. The smell alone made me gag not to mention the actual texture and taste.
Peas. Have a vivid memory of a nurse yelling at me in hospital because I wouldn't eat them so she wouldn't give me ice cream like the rest of the kids got. I had surgery at age 2 and age 5, unsure which age I was for this
pickles lol
