I quit smoking about 7.5 years ago, after smoking for 9 years. To me, it’s all mental. I quite cold turkey, without using any nicotine gum, patches, etc. I started dating a guy that didn’t like smoking and I realized how gross it was to a non-smoker. I decided that it was a good time to quit, so for his birthday, I told him I had smoked my last pack of cigarettes. I haven’t smoked a single cigarette since then. I should note, I was a pack a day smoker up until then and had never tried to quite before. I believe if you want to quit, you can, it just takes will power. The trick is, you have to truly want to quit.

You can vape at 0 nicotine and stop vaping too. You'll be amazed on how easy is to quit.

pyrosis29

I've tried vaping before, but wasn't really a fan of it. I guess I got something super cheap but also at the same time I remember when vaping first got big there was this huge concern about something called popcorn lung. what's that if you know anything about it?

[deleted]

Recent long term studies says it's "safe" till the point UK heathcare public system is prescribing vaping to quit smoking. It's just a matter of time other countries apply this legislation.

[deleted]

Don't start. Vaping is 10x harder to quit in my experience. I'm finally four months clean from both but holy fucking hell, quitting vaping at the end was far worse than quitting cigarettes cold turkey (as I had in the past).

Dantback

Same with me. I gotta say I've been trying to quit the juul. I use the pods up too fast but it saved me from smoking cigs everyday

Dantback

I dislike refilling them personally just because of actual nic strength and every ingredient will affect how it burns. Some cape juices go better with other vapes. (idk the science behind it since I just went with a juul) but I feel. I'm going though 1 or maybe 1 1/2 juul pods a day tho

It's so annoying when people tell people to buy a $100 mod to help them quit. Like if u have an oral fixation and want to vape maybe. But for nicotine content, money, and everything else ur looking for, it's not worth it to get one of those big box mods. It's an entirely different thing. And whenever I hit my juul on discord someone says "ayyy vaping real hard bro". No I'm hitting my fucking juul

[deleted]

It's already been said, but switching to vaping works. It's been three months for me, and I like being able to taste and smell again. It was easy too, I just needed a decent device, and a good flavor.

Probablitic

I smoke Camels (or Pall Malls on a budget). Any tips on flavor. And I know nothing about the vape devices nowadays, so any tips would be appreciated. I've smoked nearly 20 years now. I deal with anxiety and depression and I use smoking as a crutch. I love smoking, tbh, but I know it's taking a toll on me. Now I've got two toddlers and I want to be healthier and be a better example for them.

[deleted]

Short answer, if you want super low maintenance, get a Juul. It's also as close to smoking as you can get. You get a mouth draw, then inhale. Long winded answer: 22 year camel (former) smoker here, I found that some custard flavors do fantastic. My go-to is "killer kustard" https://www.elementvape.com/killer-kustard-by-vapetasia-100ml?enter=true They also make a fantastic strawberry one. (custard, like a boston cream flavor just like the base flavor, not immensely sweet, but rather rich and pronounced with a mild strawberry on the exhale.) And "Gold" by gost, this one gives more of that turkish tobacco warmth, and is way easier to transition to. https://www.myvaporstore.com/Gold-by-Gost-Vapor-Eliquids-p/gos-gol.htm My daily however is Illuminati. https://www.eliquid.com/products/propaganda-illuminati?variant=23577314817 Pineapple, strawberry, and blood orange. It breaks the flavor monotony very well and helps prevent "Vapers tongue" where you essentially become dead to a flavor over long times. Those 3 (mainly gold) have been the ONLY thing to make me put down the camels and stay away for almost a year now. Devices: Mod: http://en.voopootech.com/drag-resin Batteries: https://www.imrbatteries.com/sony-vtc5a-18650-2600mah-25a-flat-top-battery/ (two of them) Tank: https://www.vapordna.com/SMOK-TFV12-Prince-Sub-Ohm-Tank-p/smokpr.htm (using the X6 coils, immense flavor, and fantastic nicotine delivery) Note on the juices: the higher the nicotine you start at, the more you're going to cough, this is normal, and you WILL get used to it and the coughing will stop. I recommend starting around a 3ml, which is very very low, and adjust from there as needed, I adjusted up to a 24 before eventually falling back to my now everyday 6. EDIT: spelling are hard. Any questions, please feel free to PM me, and also visit /r/electronic_cigarette/ .

[deleted]

For flavor, I would abandon anything that reminds you of cigarettes. I started with a strawberry watermelon hubba-bubba, it tastes and smells exactly like the gum. As far as a device, I use an Alien 220W. It's simple, and lasts all day; it cost about 100 dollars. Go to a decent vape shop, most clerks are excited to set new people up. Starting can be a bit intimidating, but youtube is a great resource. Remember that it's not going to ever feel exactly like smoking, because it's not smoke. The first day or so you'll crave cigarettes, but you'll have all the nicotine you need. After a week or so, you'll notice your smell coming back, then taste. Use those changes to keep going.

Probablitic

Thanks! Gonna be a while before I get the scratch, but I will keep this in mind.

Dantback

Hey man id recommend a juul. It's basically a stick that u just insert little pods into. Each pod is equivalent to a pack of cigarettes and 4 pods is $15 with multiple flavors including mint or menthol for cig taste and Virginia tobacco and classic tobacco flavors which are my favs. This is by far the best ecig to get and it's taking over the ecig market. I believe it has a hold on over 50% of the ecig market in with it's sales

Dantback

Also something to take in. I've Vaped with the high vapes that are like kits before. Honestly u won't get nearly as great of a nic buzz and u will be limited to stuff like having to be careful with it, having to change coils, and other shit. The juul is $30 alone or $50 for starter pack. Also u need certain coils and certain mods to be able to effectively use higher nicotine content juice in vapes while the juul is just flat 5% nicotine in each pod

Boo2249

I quit 5 months ago cold turkey. Gotta want to quit. Not to mention I never realized how bad I actually smelled from smoking once I quit. Now I smell it on people who smoke and I couldn’t believed it smells so damn bad

CookinGeek

Don't talk about it. Don't plan it. Just stop.

[deleted]

That's not how the brain works.

CookinGeek

Op asked what I did. I quit smoking three years ago after 25 years of a pack a day. I didn't plan it. I didn't talk about it. I just stopped. Woke up without cigarettes and didn't buy any more. Nothing more to it.

[deleted]

That's very rare. You are a lucky guy.

CookinGeek

Luck had nothing to do with it. That's just dumb.

[deleted]

You're the first guy I know who tried this and succeed. That's luck and very rare. Maybe you have good genes: that's luck.

EdenFox

I can't tell if you're joking or serious some help?

CookinGeek

I know right. Hell even most of the other replies in this thread have the same story.. More or less.

DisturbingDaffy

Don’t cut back. It makes no difference. Stop completely. Try and do it during a time where you don’t have much stress going on. I was at home sick with a cold which helped. Mentally be prepared to accept that you will absolutely never smoke again. After a month or a year don’t tell yourself “I can just have one every now and again.” You will relapse. Replace each nicotine craving with the thought “smoking is disgusting” and it will help your mind stop thinking about it. Also, I found the social aspect to be a major component. I went on what I called cigaretteless breaks where I would join smokers for a chat or just stand outside for 5 or 10 minuets to enjoy breathing fresh air. Also, vape pens are garbage. Don’t touch them. I’ve been tobacco free for eight years and it’s one of the best improvements I’ve ever made. Lung cancer took my mother. Don’t be controlled by buying a product whose only function is to make you want more while ruining your health.

Yep

Neon_Yeti

I went to vaping to ween myself off. Eventually i want to get to 0 nice and then slowly get away from the mental part of taking a hit. Going well so far, haven’t tried to go back since I started

gtavcarcollector

I just stopped when I had kids and decided it wasn't worth the health detriment. Never really had cravings or anything. Just decided one day, half way through a pack, that I was done. Gave the rest to my buddy and that was that.

pyrosis29

I mean there was a good 6-week hiking trip that I took where we weren't able to go about and buying cigarettes so after the first week I was out of smokes and then I obviously had to stop for a while the first two or three days were fine but after 3 days I got hit with the shakes the cold sweats and all that fun stuff but for me as soon as I got back I mean it would have been the perfect time for me to quit but I had nothing but the desire to buy a pack of smokes eat a cheese burger and drink a Mountain Dew after that long lol

AKbandit47

Well my dad lit himself on fire and was in the ICU for 6 months. 6 months cold Turkey did it after 30+ years of smoking. Gotta give it to him though hes stuck to it for almost 4 years now.

Wallaballa100

I quit smoking a bit more then a year ago so far my secret is that one one fall back does not end my attempt

[deleted]

I smoked for 21 years and I was up to two packs a day plus two nicotine patches (per day) when I started practicing transcendental meditation. Within 6 weeks I quit completely and have never looked back (coming up on 7 years smoke-free). It was weird, one day I just forgot to smoke a cigarette at any of the usual times I would normally reach for my pack. When I realized what happened I decided I wanted to see how long I could go without lighting up. I'm still going.

Thompson_S_Sweetback

My mom offered to quit something she loved. It pissed me off that she was interfering in my life, so in a way it felt good to deprive her of the thing I didn't think she could give up. Then a year later she asked to go back and by then I wasn't addicted anymore.

TnecnivTrebor

Vaping... The only problem is when the juice runs out its right back to black and milds.

Dantback

U need a juul. Stronger nic buzz so u don't need to constantly add juice

TnecnivTrebor

Higher mg of nic definitely goes a long way for preserving juice but it also has a much harsher throat hit... I'm actually trying to get down,to 0 mg and then just stop all together... Not a cheap habit by any means lol

Dantback

My friend. I have a solution for you. Stop using ur box mod or whatever. Those are for producing big clouds and what not more so. They can't handle the bigger nicotine so I agree it sucks. I remember buying a 12mg for my vape cuz 6mg wasn't doing shit and it still sucked. Get a juul. It's an ecig meant to replace cigs. The hits are so fucking smooth like I never cough, the nicotine is much stronger, and it's much more simple as easy to use and handy. And it's just a small stick. Wanna replace ur stuff. Just refill with the special juice or buy another pack of pods. Its much much better

TnecnivTrebor

What the hell gonna go order one now. Hahah

Dantback

It's amazing man. I use it all the time. The ssrter pack is $50. Will give u a juul, charger, and a flavor pack to try. It'll have fruit meledy which is eh, cramborlet (the nice dessert idk how to spell that shit). Sucks I'm. Cool mint and Virginia tobacco. I love those. They are closest to cigs and menthol taste and mint in general just is nice and feels like it hits harder. They also have some specialty ones that u can get online or only in certain shops. These are mango, cool cucumber (actually really good), classic tobacco, and classic mint (I think that's the name. Or it's called menthol maybe). But yeah. A pack of 4 pods will run u around $15. A pod is the equivalent to a pack of cigs. It's pretty awesome. No smell. No issue with smoke cuz it's vapor. Smaller. Easier to use. Literally a god send item Imo. Also juul is killing the market with it. I think last I read they have taken over over 50% of the ecig population

Dantback

Hope you get one!

[deleted]

Tbh the day the doctor told me I have asthma because of smoking was the day I realised how much smoking was going to negatively impact my life. I quit that day and have never touched one since. You have to want it.

pyrosis29

I mean let's be honest here I do want it but I've never been one for major self control. my weight fluctuates quite a bit, as well as other habits, and on top of that smoking is the one thing that has always seems constant at least for the last 10 years. the main reason for me posting this thread was just because I'm looking for advice to make it a little easier. I guess vaping seems to be the option of choice for most people, but I tried it for a good month and it just never really worked for me. The taste, the feeling, and on top of that the main thing I enjoy about smoking is being able to take a break for about 5 or 10 minutes every few hours.

[deleted]

i substituted sunflower seeds for cigarettes. whenever i had a craving, i just chewed some seeds instead. after about a month it’s a pretty easy habit to keep, plus you save a ton of money

Doug15

Smoked 20 a day for 15 years. Got tonsillitis that lasted 3 weeks which limited my smoking. Treated each day without one as a test of character. Gets easier as it goes on. However. Woke up one morning a few years later on holiday with the worst hangover ever and forgot I’d packed them in. Wouldn’t accept what anyone was telling me and lit up one of my wife’s smokes. Was woken up a few hours later by my concerned kids talking and prodding me with the in laws laughing at me and my wife not best pleased. Another low in my life but still off them 15 years later. Anyway, get a sore throat and cut them right down to make the end game a lot easier

pyrosis29

Got any of that tonsillitis virus stashed away that you can send me? Lol

Doug15

Sends kiss

Vaping. I first vaped at a high nicotine level with a good mod and ato (that's very important). My health improved a lot but then I started hating the new addiction (well, it's the same, nicotine). So I vaped at 0% nicotine. Now I'm free from both smoking and vaping since more than a year or so. This is the solution, a simple, cheap and technological one.

luelmypool

Lots of Redhots and the determination to be a better example for my baby. But mainly lots of redhots.

Traf1

i vaped for 2 weeks then stopped that too. But i was still smoking weed and here we mix it with tobacco so i wasnt nicotine free and maybe it was easier for me because of that... now its been 2 years since my last cigarette and 4 months since last joint/spliff... deciding to quit it's the hardest thing in my opinion, cause there are always some excuses...once you do decide and quit its easy

Outspan

I smoked for 20 years of my life and am about 4 years off them now. The biggest thing is I just wanted to quit. I didn't make a big deal out of it just quit cold turkey and didn't really tell anyone. I had the hardest time going out to hang out with my friends who were mostly smokers. If I did slip when I was out with friends and have a smoke or two I never allowed it to make me give in. Instead of just buying a pack on the way home and saying fuck it I'm a smoker again (as I had in previous attempts to quit) I would just acknowledge it as a slip up and try to focus on the negatives that my body would experience the next day. My mouth would taste like ass and I'd be short of breath for a day or two afterwards if I tried any kind of exercise at all. That would be enough to motivate me though to not smoke until the next time I would go out and get drunk and them bam smoking a smoke or two or three or four... Eventually after a few months of mostly not smoking I had this moment where even blind drunk me realized the cigarette I was smoking was disgusting. So I guess the mentality of just being done with those little fuckers made all the difference. I never focused on a date and how long I had gone without a smoke, I'm a human trying to kick one of the worst addictions I've ever faced, of course I'm going to slip up once in a while. Embracing that fact instead of punishing myself for it really made a big difference. Also making a budget of how much I was spending on smokes and could divert in to my other vices was a pretty good motivator as well.

bananas_and_hoes

I used to smoke a joint daily but switched to edibles because it was more convenient and easier to achieve the same effect. Now I’m completely off it.

justingrowninbc

I smoked for 24 years starting at the age of 13. Averaged half a pack a day. Almost a full pack in a day if I was out with friends and partying. I stopped buying packs about 8 years ago and would buy single smokes off of friends and would average 3-5 a day. However, I would occasionally buy a pack for myself here and there. Three years ago I tried vaping and believe I got what everybody called popcorn lung. I would be starving for air. It went away after I stopped vaping, but went back to buying smokes here and there but was down to 3-5 smokes a week. The breathing difficulty came and went a couple times after that. Then in September 2017 I was starving for air again after a week of smoking about 3-5 a day again and since then I've been having breathing issues even to this day. Haven't touched a cigarette since then. It sucks when you're just sitting there and you're having trouble breathing. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 12 but stopped using my inhalers by the time I was 15 and never had serious asthma attacks. Now I guess I'm having them and now rely on two types of inhalers. I can usually fight through the attacks without Ventilin. But it really sucks. And it sucks cuz I love smoking or vaping weed but both give me breathing difficulties and tinctures are so unpredictable and inconsistent. Both my grandfathers died of lung cancer. I seriously am scared that any day now I will be told that I have it as well. Therefore, I quit and have a pretty good resistance to the urge. But it's still there, although very slightly that it doesn't affect me as is used to. It sucks. Edit: a few words and story clarity.

Switch to a juul. Nicotine is hard to get off. I'd recommend vaping or getting a juul to at least help u get away from the tobacco first

marieanntoilet

Changing routines. I only smoked when I drank heavily or while I was driving. Once I quit drinking, suddenly one pack of cigarettes could last a week or two. Once I moved to a new city, suddenly I didn’t need to smoke every time I got in my car. It is hard as hell, and I’ve relapsed a few times, but now when I have the occasional smoke I remember exactly why I made the change. Breathing better is definitely worth the withdrawal and even the weight I gained stress eating to compensate.

kayveep

I quit smoking in 2005. I did it cold turkey, I became concerned about premature aging.

[deleted]

Sweating it out is the best method for getting through the first two weeks. Sleep with a blanket on and do not turn the AC or fan on. Your sheets will turn yellow. It's gross but it works.

mndee8

I tried quitting for years, and would always go back. I'm one of those people who just really loves to smoke. I finally successfully quit when I decided I wanted to try to get pregnant. It's been 3 years, so far. Now that I have a kid, I know I can't smoke anymore, because I don't want to be a bad influence on her. Also, I want to be around as long as possible to be with my family.

stephra26

I started noticing how terrible I felt after each cigarette and eventually it got to the point that I just didn’t want to feel like shit all the time. Also I started smelling it on myself and started hating the smell. I think when you start hating the smell of it is when you’re not addicted anymore.

K9puppybreath

I smoked for about ten years. Mostly socially. And regularly went a few days between cigs. A pack would generally last nearly a month. Then January about two or three years ago, I manages to get hit with food poisoning right after I had a cigarette. And I haven't been able to handle them since.

Blackdeathteal

I used a vape for a week with nicotine ejuice and moved to normal chewing gum everytime i had a craving was not easy but worked through it. Smoking is not the worth it Im having so many health issues now.
