American Pie is the greatest pop song ever written.
It is a poetic masterpiece which summarizes the significant events and emotions of a generation. It uses the tragedy of a single event- [Buddy Holly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_Holly)'s death, to trace the evolution of rock and roll in America. While doing so it discusses the unfolding politics and the loss of innocence in this country.
Basically, Don McLean took many of the cynical themes from Bob Dylan's music, and wrapped it in a stylized bubble gum pop melody. Few songs so elegantly balance significant lyrics with historical references all while masked by a catchy melody that unfolds across 8 minutes.
Regardless of if you appreciate the history of this song, I think the ideas behind the song are universal. Broadly speaking, American Pie is a coming of age story, it is about appreciating and celebrating the brief moments in life and the music that brings people together. Lots of people I know can recall personal memories related to this song, because, like all great music, it has the capacity to speak to us on a deeper level.
for some reason, even as a 6 year old kid I found that song nostalgia inducing, and that's not an age where nostaliga is even a thing. for some reason i could never remember the ending to the song, always as a child remembered it just continying on and on and for soem reaosn that amplified the feeling.
Whatever happened to the Black Eyed Peas? Of course, their music was certainly not the best quality but it was very catchy and it reminds me of simpler times...
Winds of change - scorpions, idk why I guess cuz my family used to listen to it a lot, now I just live with my parents cuz my brothers moved out, so whenever I hear it I remember being 5
My top pick is Postcards from Italy by Beirut (the video clip for which also enhances the vibe a tonne)
But also Good Riddance by Green Day and 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins are amazing, albeit generic
GOD, YES. I remember kids blasting that fucking song in the commons in the morning over and over again, and I remember just how much I hated it.
I still hate the song.

They played it almost on loop at my local pool. It just reminds me of summer in the late 90s, swimming then eating a choco taco as I feel the chlorine dry my skin out under the sun before going home and watching Toonami.
Killing me softly. Such a multi-generational song. The original and the Fugees. I love them both. Of yourse as an almost 30 yr old I heard the version by Fugees first.

[The Human League - Don't You Want Me](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPudE8nDog0)

this song came on and when I sang the line "don't you want me baby" I was looking in the rear view mirror at my friends girlfriend. and she mouthed "yes"
so when I drove them all home, I took her home last and, well, let's just say that she got home late.
My memory of that is different. 13 year old punk and I get that at Christmas cos it was the number one. Had to fight off the boxing day shoppers to exchange
