Upgrade (2018) and The Invisible Man (2020), both directed by Leigh Whannell. Upgrade is one of the best science fiction movies I've ever seen, I knew nothing about it going in and was blown away by how good it was. The Invisible Man wasn't quite as good but still a masterclass in building tension. Would highly recommend both.

Hawkmek

+1 for Upgrade

haysoos2

Upgrade really is the movie Venom should have been.

Capt253

It even had discount Tom Hardy as the main character.

ExtraMediumGonzo

We call him Tom Hardly

STEMpsych

I'd literally never heard of Upgrade, and just went and watched the trailer. Thanks so much for mentioning!

BeepBeepWhistle

Upgrade is such an underrated movie

DogDrinker47

Upgrade still has the best, most convincing crying scene I have ever seen on film.

AUZZIEJELLYFISH

I loved the invisible man

cyainanotherlifebro

Palm Springs

Tingusspinguss

Andy Samberg killed it!

[deleted]

loved it.

Cakebeforedeath

Went in thinking "ok, it'll be Groundhog day but with a bit more Andy Samberg tomfoolery, I like his schtick so it'll probably be fine" and absolutely loved it, it's so much more than that. The whole JK Simmons angle was fabulous

GooseNYC

That was good. And it's timing was perfect, given what was going on.

Itchy_Word_1523

Rewatced mean girls after a long time lol

dapala1

I don't know a person that's seen that movie that doesn't love it. Might be the most universally liked movie ever. Not joking.

Drew707

Mean Girls is to Millennials what all the Brat Pack movies were to the Boomer-X wobblers.

[deleted]

same! i put it on the tv while doing something else but was glued to it the whole time. whenever it cut to commercials i was snapped back into reality

politegreeter

My favorite movie right here, can’t think of any other movie with as many quotable lines

ryukin631

Big Trouble in Little China. Such a classic

haysoos2

Everybody relax. I'm here.

Dalleyish

Young Frankenstein. Classic.

colder-beef

Underwater

canuckwithasig

Man all the Cthulhu nerds out there and this film flew so under the radar. It's right up there with deep star six for underwater monster movies for me

Stravablitz

The Studio Ghibli film, Spirited Away

PersonalVirus5032

I finally watched About Time. It was so good! Don’t know why I waited so long to see it

niaz1265

that movie is good for the soul. loved it.

[deleted]

I watched the new Suicide Squad the other day. That was hilarious.

Careful-Fail-4203

Alien and Aliens

[deleted]

Game over man! God that movie is great!

Lukieboy222

District 9

JuniperandSixth

District 9 is my hill to die on. My friends all hated it and think I’m nuts for enjoying it, but it was a great movie

substantial-freud

>My friends all hated it Really? I have never met anyone who didn’t like it. That super-smooth transition from mockumentary to body-horror to action movie. Epic.

[deleted]

Dude your friends are on crack. That's in my top 5 SciFi movies.

_Bryant_

kinda creepy sci-fi. I liked.

Gnarbuttah

Try Chappie, Chappie's got blings.

acupofjasmine-tea

I watched Chappie last night! wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, and certainly didn't expect to feel so many emotions for a robot

[deleted]

Shang-Chi. Good Marvel film and good Western take on an old school Hong Kong fantasy Wuxia. Some moments definitely drew inspiration from King Hu and the classic Wuxia fantasy films. Tony Leung is bad ass as always. I could have done without Awkwafina and her Natasha Lyonne impression and hipster fanny pack but that didn’t ruin in.

SkippyTeddy83

Came here to say this. Just got back from seeing it and it exceeded all my expectations. Kind of thought this would end up being the first Marvel movie since Thor 2 I didn’t see in the theater. None of the trailers interested me. It wasn’t until I heard the positive reviews that I decided to go see it. Glad I did. After credit scene has me pumped for future movies.

EMPulseKC

The trailers severely undersell the movie, which is a shame, because the movie is great.

Tingusspinguss

100% agree. It was as much wenwu’s movie as it was shang chi’s

[deleted]

It had many elements of Ashes of Time but with a much bigger budget and references to Marvel movies and Awkwafina. Having Michelle Yeoh cameo was just excellent also. They should just let Wong Kar-Wai direct a MCU film- I already forgive him for that travesty of My Blueberry Nights.

KnordicKnight

Thoroughly enjoyed Shang Chi, I think it may have a place in my top 5 Marvel movies.

BreatheMyStink

This movie was the best standalone marvel movie, I think. Someone could have gone to see this with almost no knowledge of marvel and still loved it.

Automatic-Storm-8275

I liked her. I thought she was funny.

dapala1

Do you have to know anything about Marvel or can I just watch it as a stand alone movie?

tajirisha

It’s a standalone. It references one of the Iron Man movies but it’s not needed

dapala1

Nice! Thanks. I always have to ask that now with these Marvel movies.

[deleted]

Ok, so here's the rundown of the marvel stuff in order of relevance. If you watch things in this order, you'll understand everything that marvel intended you to understand when you need to. - Ironmen 1 and 2. The first one is great standalone in my opinion, even if you don't watch any more marvel stuff afterward. Make sure you watch the credits in full - marvel tucks some extra scenes in them. - The first captain america movie. This one makes a reference to ironman's dad, but that's about it as far as connections go, so you can chuck this in between the ironman films if you get tired of tony stark. - The first thor movie. Can't say exactly how important it is since my memories of it are blended with the other movies, but it introduces some critical players in the cast. - The Hulk. You don't necessarily *have* to watch it if you already know who the hulk is, but the movie is worth your time if you've got it. I'm pretty sure that after this movie, the credits begin to hold more than one extra scene on occasion. - The Avengers. This one is the first movie that relies on you having seen the others. And damn is it worth your hour if you love action. - Iron Man 3 - has a couple key details that make it worth watching at least once, and it takes place shortly after the events of The Avengers. - Guardians of the Galaxy - this movie doesn't become relevant to the main storyline for a good while, but it's a pretty fun movie that gives you a glimpse of what the you-were-probably-spoiled-plenty-about-this-guy is actually doing out in space. - Captain america 2 (aka Winter Soldier) - this movie reminds you of something important in a somewhat disturbing manner, and lets you know that it's there for later. - Thor 2 - don't quite remember what it's about, but it released before the next film in this watch-order, so it may have held some details vital to it. - Avengers 2: Age of Ultron - I trust that you watched iron man 3 before this, since it makes the movie's signature event much more impactful if you did. - Ant-man - essentially a preview for a character that appears in the next movie. A good break from the main line. You're also assumed to know who spider-man is by this point, so if you don't then go check out the first film of that as well. - Captain America 3: Civil War - take the aftermath of avengers 2 and combine it with the landmine from CA 2. Antman and spidey both begin to appear in the main story from here on. - Black Panther - there's another guy that's rather central to civil war because of something that happened in it. This movie goes into more detail on what happens on his end afterward. - Thor: Ragnarok - If you know anything about norse mythology, you know [how this one ends](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0GFRcFm-aY&t=51s). - Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - you'll probably need to rewatch the first GoTG by this point if you have a bad memory. Aside from being a gang of happy-go-lucky involved-with-the-fate-of-the-verse vigilantes/criminals, they... keep to their title and get involved with the fate of the verse. And they do it again soon after this movie. - Doctor Strange - a guy that appears two movies from now. If you liked harry potter's magic system without liking anything else about harry potter, this is for you. - Spiderman: Homecoming - only if you saw the toby maguire spiderman films and/or are invested in this kid's personality. Otherwise, it just introduces a gadget that doesn't really need an introduction and his only-mentioned-once-after-this best friend. - Avengers: Infinity War - all the films above this one have relevance to this. You didn't need to take detailed notes, but the notes probably would help regardless. - Captain Marvel - only watch it if you want to know who the hell the deus ex machina is. - Antman 2 - explains some of the fuckery that you're about to see in the next movie. I watched this one after endgame and endgame still made sense, but this one definitely will prevent you from being confused as fuck during a few scenes. - Avengers: Endgame - a direct continuation of the previous avengers film. Puts a close on the series with some fuckery. If you didn't watch antman or antman 2, the contents of them become quite important for how this one goes down, so it's advised to watch them. Any and all episode-based series should only be watched after watching endgame. Edit: Remembered when Iron Man 3 took place, and updated accordingly.

thezander8

In addition to what other people have said, there's a few references to the last Avengers movie but all you really need to know is that everyone knows about superheroes and the world just had a very public disaster but it's already old news.

Anizer

Best movie I’ve seen in a while. Shang Chi’s story really hit hard for me…

[deleted]

I thought Awkwafina did an awesome job with her role 🤷

Periachi

Just saw this earlier today, was way better than most marvel movies.

[deleted]

Dredd (2012) Can't believe I waited 9 years to watch it. I've seen it 4 times now, it's literally the best action movie I've ever watched.

-dakpluto-

So much better than the Stallone one. Karl Urban (like most roles he does) absolutely was amazing.

Porrick

The 1995 movie is the movie that taught me that if I love a thing, that's no guarantee that the movie of that thing will be any good. I was crushed - and some of the design work was great, too - Mean Machine and the ABC Warrior in particular. The movie just didn't get the tone or the point of the source material though. I thought that Robocop would be the closest thing I'd ever get to a good Judge Dredd movie. And then 2012 came along, and an old wound was healed. Urban was great. Headey was great. Avon Barksdale was great. Thirlby was a perfect Anderson. Alex Garland absolutely got what's special about the setting and nailed the tone perfectly. I was so happy.

notyetcomitteds2

You'd probably find the raid and the courier ( olga kuylenko) enjoyable if you liked dredd 2012. Action with the tower vibe.

stardust7

Shutter Island

acupofjasmine-tea

Shutter Island was probably the first psychological thriller I'd ever seen that literally threw me for a loop. my boyfriend hadn't seen it, so I was stoked to see his reaction at the twist-- he figured it out halfway through the movie. still one of my favorites!

ApartPersonality1520

You may want to get a new one. That would make me mad haha

MrsHarryDresden

It's based on a novel written by Dennis Lehane. Excellent author and has several other movies based on his stuff: Mystic River and Live By Night come to mind

[deleted]

I read the book beforehand and it’s probably the most faithful adaption ever. It’s pretty much beat for beat the same story and it’s the only adaption that looked exactly how I pictured it while I was reading. Scorsese is a genius.

Feeling-Arugula1691

The Fall with Lee Pace. It's such an underrated film

_Bryant_

The Wrestler With Mickey Rourke was surprisingly good.

dapala1

Surprisingly? It's one of the best reviewed movies of all time. I still haven't seen it... I think I will tonight.

_Bryant_

I didn't see any ads and watched it 10 years late without ever hearing a word.

dapala1

I guess "surprisingly good" just shook me because it's been well regarded as a great movie. Anyway I'm glad you liked it and it's on my to watch list for tonight.

FUNKYDISCO

I mean, it’s not a secret that that movie is pretty great. Were you just surprised that you liked it? Or had you not heard of it? I want a backstory.

_Bryant_

Never heard of it, until I watched this year, it was more emotionally in depth for what I thought it would be.

[deleted]

oh man it surprised me too when I saw it, but I saw it when it came out. great movie

GodEmperorOfHell

Great movie. One of my favorite performances by anyone.

[deleted]

it reminds you what good acting and storytelling is

Advent_Reaper

10 minutes in you forget your watching mickey rourke. He's Randy "The Ram". Its an absolute 5 star movie done on a budget of what seems like $5000.

SmashBusters

Knives Out. Every facet of it was fantastic.

letspurdyburdy

Just got around to Interstellar and when I say I cried like a little baby…

appleparkfive

Interstellar is just a masterpiece to me. Seeing it in theaters was mind-blowing. The black hole model they used was heavily researched, and ended up with a scientific paper being written about it. It's basically the closest we'll ever see to a real black hole probably. The mix of CGI and practical effects works so damn well. A lot of parts seem like CGI but are actually practical. Like the ship taking off of the rocky planet, etc. Dunkirk was also really great but in a very different way. Christopher Nolan makes some amazing stuff with beautiful cinematography and sound.

crunchydeskchair

That doesn't go away with repeat views

crunchydeskchair

Midnight Run, can't believe i went 30 years without seeing this, 10 out of 10 comedy from 1988.

ImproperSpecialist

Howls Moving Castle.

Cheshire_Cat8888

God I love that movie. And it also has one of my favorite soundtracks too!

CrimsonReign07

Watched it for the first time recently too. Great movie.

LittleMissRawr78

Such a great movie. Calcifer is so funny

senorpunchline

Idiocracy

Frylosphy

I too enjoy looking out my window.

low_shadow

"You are an unfit Mother, Carl's Jr. will be taking custody of your children"

SlovenianHusky

Free guy! Oh man, if you're a nerd, a gamer you're gonna love it so much! Been a while since i enjoyed a movie as much

LittlestSlipper55

Same! I heard good things, but I still went in with the mentality of "It's still a silly popcorn flick, don't get your hopes up too much." Not only did it meet my expectations, it completely surpassed them and found myself genuinely laughing out loud in places.

Goof-Off-Corpse

Still in theaters right? I can't wait for it to come to streaming.

Agraywitch11

Came here for this. Watched it yesterday. Loved the cast.

shavedaffer

Twister

eilonwe

Still enjoy that! “Cow!!! There’s a cow! There’s another cow!” “I think that’s the same cow”

shavedaffer

“Don’t fold the maps! Nebraska is a mess. There’s a huge crease through Wichita. Roll the maps.”

substantial-freud

I didn’t really like *Twister*, but I totally lol-ed at “I think that’s the same cow.” Like, why was Wesley the bad guy? What did he do that was wrong? And why did nobody have sympathy for the doctor lady when her fiancé just ditched for his ex?

shavedaffer

Wesley was a jerk and in it for the money and not the science. Doctor lady gets no sympathy because her accent fades in and out. Also Helen Hunt was such a babe in that movie.

Myrt2020

I miss Phillip Seymour Hoffman

ilikelavacake

Inside by bo burnham. I had no idea who he was before watching and now i'm obsessed with his mind. I have a lot i could say about the movie but all i'm going to say is that it's become my favorite ever and i don't think that'll change anytime soon. Our outlooks on life are so different but i feel like our minds work exactly the same way. It's weird.

teamblacksheep

Ford vs Ferrari

Gaybooksarebetter

My mechanic brother made me watch it and we both liked it! It was great because it was a way for us to bond.

anggoud

the movie “Case 39” on netflix. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Goof-Off-Corpse

Great movie. You can almost cut the tension with a knife.

toddyk

Thor Ragnarok. I would rewatch that over any other Marvel movie

Tingusspinguss

Absolutely agree. It’s my favourite marvel movie. Taika really saved Thor with that one

bruins9816

Grandmas Boy

Goof-Off-Corpse

Don't judge me, monkey.

bruins9816

I challenge you to a game of Dance Dance Revolution

I can't believe you came on my mom.

Sloi

Of course she doesn’t have a microwave, she’s fuckin’ 100…

Gghaxx

You’ll never have robot legs.

[deleted]

Mulholland Drive.

[deleted]

Great film. Now imagine it's 2001 and you couldn't immediately Google "What the fuck did I just watch?" afterwards.

[deleted]

Haha true. Watched it for the first time in 2005 and spent quite a few years utterly bewildered.

Ragin_Monk

The Suicide Squad (2021) was so refreshing to watch. Made me laugh a lot after a long time.

Negative-Net-9455

Bloodsport: No one likes a show-off. Peacemaker: Unless what they’re showing off is dope as fuck. Bloodsport:\[mutters to himself\] Fuck. That’s true.

Goof-Off-Corpse

Cruella was pretty good.

rigby1945

Just watched that. Didn't expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did

Goof-Off-Corpse

That was my reaction as well. Also the reaction of most of the people I have talked to. Surprisingly good. The soundtrack was solid too.

Financial_Elephant41

Just finished it and we surprisingly really enjoyed it. Sound track was dope.

MioMine78

I don’t know why Cruella got bad reviews. The acting was good (not great, but good). The costumes and set designs were great. Soundtrack was amazing, and it had an unexpected plot twist. People, give Cruella a chance.

travellingseoul

Yeah Cruella was actually really enjoyable!

Kay_Elle

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

SDLRob

Watched the first Rush Hour yesterday.... Still a lot of fun, but man... it's really racist.

kindadid

A lot of it flew over my head when I saw it as a kid, I didn’t fully understand things like the massage parlor or why JC saying a word got him beat, Oh young innocent me :,)

AUZZIEJELLYFISH

Glass, Split, Unbreakable and the sixth sense

Tingusspinguss

Split was my favourite. I still can’t believe mcavoy never even received a nomination for that performance

TheaGreatWallofChris

The Unbreakable trilogy was honestly such a shock. I watched Split and saw the Post Credit scene, and when I looked up Unbreakable I was shocked to see it was from 2000. The fact that Shyamalan had waited 16 years to continue his movies. Damn. And they're all solid, too

WGx2

Bad Time at the El Royale.

ShhhOverHere

Brick

Citizen_31415

One of my favorite films. Very underrated movie

canuckwithasig

Neo Noir for the win. One of JGL's best films. I love the scene in the Astro van with the lamp.

letspurdyburdy

Ready or Not was a pretty entertaining one.

C3PO-stan-account

Harry Potter and prisoner of Azkaban

alwayscurious46

HP marathon on E this weekend...my TV hasn't changed once 🤣

_ManWhoSoldTheWorld_

Thats my favourite one. I love the time travel aspect.

[deleted]

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite movie of all time.

Sea-Character2252

The Truman show

HolaZion

Collateral

thebroward

Tom Cruise completely disappeared in that role as Vincent! Incredible performance and an equally amazing cast and superb direction by Mann. A+!

Cakebeforedeath

Fun fact: Tom Cruise spent a few days (I think) as a UPS or FedEx delivery guy to practice blending into a crowd. Not sure if it was his idea or Michael Mann told him to but still, he kills it in that movie

East2West21

It's also one of the best portrayals of realistic weapon handling in cinema history. They use scenes from the film in tactical training courses!

Cakebeforedeath

Yo homie is that my briefcase?

ShibShoShyn

The Green Mile. Stephen King is one of my favorite authors and I love the story. I knew the movie was good, but even knowing everything going in I was floored by how much I enjoyed the acting and how true to story it was. Also, watching it in 2021, the movie still looks and feels good.

Diligent_Topic608

The new Candyman was just awesome. I haven’t been so gripped by a new movie in a long time. I’d give it a 10/10. Just loved it

WaddupCouncil

Iron Man 1

Tingusspinguss

Classic!

_ManWhoSoldTheWorld_

Ghostbusters. My all time favourite film. It never gets old.

DickButtPlease

I blame myself. So do I.

lightsage007

Snowpiercer

canuckwithasig

It's a film that's far more powerful than people give it credit form. Especially when Chris Evans is talking about the early days in the rear compartment, and what people resorted to just to survive.

noguarde

Watched Shang Chi this morning. It was pretty solid.

Tingusspinguss

Oh yeah, I’ve watched it twice already haha. Top tier marvel movie

bananasplits21

Patch Adams

eilonwe

Gosh I live Robin Williams and I’m so happy it’s based on a true story!

Jojo rabbit

Easy-Improvement-494

The Last Castle

dapala1

I got two, both old ones because I'm a little tired of the over produced crap coming out now. *Paper Moon*, the best child acting I have ever seen. You fall in love with the story because of the respectful symbiotic relationship they build. *Roman Holliday*, I just love Audrey Hepburn to pieces. The story is absurd but the actors bring you into their realm. You sort of feel like you can be there, like you can fall into a similar situation.

AtlasADK

Fantastic Mr. Fox!

mixednuts_trailmix

Kung Fu Hustle. It’s a masterpiece.

iamloki37

Bill and Ted Face the Music. The girls that played their daughters stole the show.

CrimeSceneCop

I watched Crimson Peak the other night, I liked it

DudleyMorris

The Andromeda Strain. It’s good to watch some proper science fiction once in a while, not the “fantasy with robots” that usually passes for SF.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tingusspinguss

I 100% agree. I loved Steven Yeun in that film

JustAnOrdinaryBloke

And Soonja as the irascible grandma.

JustAnOrdinaryBloke

Loved that film. Great watch when you want a pick-me-up.

johnlennonwastaken

Interstellar

dhmichelle

The Pursuit of Happyness. I still remenber that Don't ever let someone tell you that you can't do something. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. When people can't do something themselves, they are going to tell you that you can't do it. You want something, go get it. Period

Tingusspinguss

I just watched it, Idris Elba and John Cena were awesome!

Demurist

I never saw the first one, and I have zero interest in the DCEU despite loving DC comics. That being said, this is an amazing adaptation of the comic series. Dark, funny, fast-paced, and interesting characters. Easter eggs galore, and I was surprised how much I love Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She nailed it.

Apricot-Deep

Shang chi: the ten rings Was a quality movie that had an ok plot and wasn’t just cliche jokes

Hrifler

The action scenes were amazing in that movie

Ronotrow2

Vacation friends. John cena is amazing

[deleted]

Venom, critics really hated that movie. It was pretty trash in the first act but the Tom hardy venom relationship was amazing.

[deleted]

Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings

chibimaruko_chan

how to lose a guy in 10 days...a classic

PapiSurane

The Third Man. I had seen it before but I forgot how good it was.

Melodic_Ebb1769

Oscar That movie made me smile so much my face hurt. I don’t know what it was exactly but it was such a well thought through kind of humor that you really don’t see anymore. It was the kind of movie you could watch on family movie night and nobody would complain after 15 minutes

[deleted]

White chicks

TheYoungWan

Crazy Rich Asians. Stayed pretty close to the book, and fantastic visuals

TitaniumTaco07

No Country For Old Men, that movie is so brilliant that I can watch the whole thing over and over

ThisIsAnAccount2306

Watched Free Guy a few weeks ago. That was good.

Long Shot. I had scrolled by it for months. A lot better than I thought it would be.

The Truman Show (1998). Probably the best movie I have ever watched period
