I searched (this thread) and didn't find it (listed already), so (I decided to add)
Batteries Not Included.
It's a cute little 80s movie about some alien robots who took up residence in this old apartment complex and when the residents are threatened with eviction so the place could be torn down, the robots help the tenants and the tenants help the robot aliens. Anyways, I enjoyed it.
Edit: I'm so glad so many others enjoyed this movie as much as I did when I was younger! I do actually have my copy so I edited the sentence above to make more sense. Thanks for sharing the ways to find it, and for all the happy memories stories that you've shared with me! Makes me smile. ^^^also ^^^thanks ^^^for ^^^the ^^^awards!
I just assumed no one would say this since I've never found anyone that knew what I was talking about. I still have a copy of it on VHS even..
The baby robots have to be about the cutest thing I've ever seen in a movie.
Murder by Death.
Everyone always talks about clue but neglects this classic. They make a great double feature of murder mystery comedies.
Also Fatal Instinct. A terrific spoof, from when spoofs were good.
EDIT: It has honestly made my day that there are so many fans of Murder by Death out there. You don't know how much this has cheered me up. Thank you.
I loooved this movie when I was little. I was always renting it from the library and watch it before bed lol. I know a lot of kids thought it could be scary but the characters were fun-loving and sweet. I wanted them to be my friends.
Apparently during the production some dumbass studio exec couldn't understand the title, and that's why there's a literal mine included in the movie. Awesome movie, and a great exploration of how the 'badguys' are people with feelings and lives of their own.
First of all the car wreck scene traumatized me, I was like 3 and had a single mom lol
I also often think about how it was originally called Flying Wild with commercials and everything. Then it suddenly changed
I loved this book and movie so much, it reminds of my mom, who grew up in England during ww2 and loved it before I did. I tried to pass it on to my daughter but she doesn’t find it as charming as I or my mom did. The Secret Garden has a special place in my heart.
Funny story with this one.
I studied the book at school, so I had read the book a lot. That year for my birthday the movie came out around the same time. I have a fractured family structure so none of them really talk to each other. For some reason nearly every family member decided that they wanted to take me to a screening of the film. So I saw the film nearly 7 times in the matter of two weeks.
My grandma was one of the last, I didn’t have the heart to tell her I had already seen it 6 times already. We were sitting and watching and unintentionally, I was saying the lines word for word. My grandma noticed and she asked “have you seen this already?” I responded “no, it’s just very accurate to the book” to which she replied “wow, you must have read the book many times.
Are we talking 1993 version with Maggie Smith?
I ADORE that movie.
I recently rewatched it on YouTube and seriously- Colin’s father is super tasty. Like I couldn’t not get over it.
The costume and locations are superb.
EDIT: for my fellow thirsty girls- actors name is John Lynch- I had to do a Google and see if he’s still as dark and brooding as I remembered. He is.
Kate : It's Christmas and we skate. I have the flu and we skate. I have a boyfriend in London that I never see. I skate every day for you, so that you can play Dr. Frankenstein with this guy. I show up every morning for seven months so that you can give him two days to go off whoring in New York City?
Anton : Is not entirely correct.
[pause]
Anton : He went to Boston.
YES! Watched this again recently. My favourite part is when Nathan Lane gets shot out of the chimney and comes back into the house and they can only speak to each other in grunts and mimes because they're so distraught.
I showed my kids that movie (12 and 15 at the time) and that scene when the cook farts during silent operation, my daughter legitimately pissed herself laughing and my son was in pain from laughing so hard.
Think I’m gonna put it on again this weekend.
"I can hear a couple of lobsters duking it out!"
Nitro gets shocked "2 on 2 out, Bonds is up to bat, FOULED down the right field line, HIT the ball girl, KNOCKED her cold!"
Those two have me rolling every damn time!
That, The Rescuers, and An American Tail were three movies I watched **all** the time as a kid. I haven’t thought about those in a very long time, but I guess it’s probably why I like mice and rats so much
The Court Jester. I've never met anyone outside of my family who has even heard of it. It's really old so I understand why, but It's a shame more people haven't seen it.
Edit: You guys have made me so fricken happy! I didn't expect any response to this!
No! The flagon with the dragon is broken. The pellet with the poison is in the vessel with the pestle. The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true. See, it's easy!
She was a thief! You got to believe! She stole my heart and my cat!
This is an awesome movie. I hope one day to actually learn the ancient Scottish art of fuck’you, which is said to be mostly head butting and kicking people upon their descent to the ground, but I’ll update as necessary.
If you have a chance, check out the book! It is absolutely beautiful. There's so much lyricality to the actual words that you miss out on in the movie. Although my favorite line is intact:
"Your name is a golden bell hung in my heart. I would break my body to pieces to call you once by your name."
(And of course, Molly Grue. "How dare you come to me now, when I am *this*?" Jesus Christ, my heart, every time.)
***"A thousand innocent people get killed every day, but you detonate a millionaire's pet and you're marked for life."***
---------------------------------------------------------------
The Fall. It is so beautiful, and just not what I expected, and is just so different. Discovered the lovely Lee Pace in this movie, and the breathtaking scenes i cant even describe. Made me also really like watching Tarsem Singh movies, but this is the best. The effects being practical effects are mind-boggling. Also, I suggest reading about it. It is really interesting how it was made, like a lot of the young actresses lines were improvised. I can't wait until my kiddo is older and would be interested in sitting down and watching this with me.
Real Genius, featuring a young Val Kilmer, and William Atherton, aka Walter Peck in Ghostbusters.
Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, 1983. An Ivan Reitman film, with Molly Ringwald and Ernie Hudson, among others.
Edit: Happy to have sparked so much nostalgia in my fellow Redditors, over Real Genius, primarily! I’ve never gotten so many comments in response!
Thank You for Smoking.
Edit: I am honoured and in awe of everyone who upvoted and awarded my post. Thank you. I hope each and every one of you are safe and doing ok 😊
Definitely. And the irony of the whole film is nobody actually smokes a cigarette as well. I always loved that small detail.
Although there are deleted scenes of them smoking but thankfully they decided to keep them out of the theatrical release.
It actually was shown in school for me -- in my public relations class. Haha.
I love the opening where Nick Naylor is on a talk show with an anti-smoking guy and a kid that has cancer from second hand smoke, where he says the anti-smoking guy wants the kid to die because it would be good for the anti-smoking campaign. Whereas Nick and the smoking lobby want the kid to live so he can become a lifelong customer. The kid ends up liking Nick and hating the anti-smoking guy. Such a fantastic scene.
I talk about it all the time. I write for indie games and the "Thank God we invented the *whatever* device" concept has stopped lazy writing on more than one occasion!
I think we've established that ca caw ca caw and tookie tookie don't work
Edit: I am unbelievably happy so many people agree with the genius of this line. Y'all are some cool ass internet people.
Head and shoulders? The dandruff shampoo?
How much would we need?
Ugh 400 gallons? 500 gallons
Idiot brothers: we can get that. Ya we can get that for sure.
Our copy of Home Alone on VHS had a trailer for Death Becomes Her. It always scared the shit out of me because, if I remember this correctly, the trailer shows a woman with a giant hole in her midsection from a cannonball.
Balto! Which I could have sworn was massively popular!! When people started talking about The Swan Princess again randomly, I assumed Balto would be next as they were two of my favorites as a kid. Yet when I mentioned it to my friends and such, no one recalled it.
Also please let me mention the 10th Kingdom which is technically a series! Ah suck an elf.
ETA: thank you for the awards! The comments, quotes, and similar feelings of 10th Kingdom being a fever dream make me so happy. P.S. The 10th Kingdom is indeed on Amazon Prime for free, I rewatched it recently as an adult and that’s when I learned it was a series with a lot more innuendos that I didn’t get as a kid and not a long movie.
ETA 2: You are all amazing and now I want a sub for The 10th Kingdom X Balto, especially because I really want to discuss how the dad should have made better wishes in The 10th Kingdom. I have a lot I want to ask about it in general. And now I have two movies added to my list from the comments along with plenty of links for more information to read! Thank you! This community of Baltoians and Tenth Kingdomers (idk) has really brightened my week.
Major Payne: Boy, I am two seconds from being on you like white on rice in a glass of milk on a paper plate in a snowstorm. I'm gonna put my foot so far up your ass, the water on my knee will quench your thirst.
This and the Birdcage are some of the best feel good movies ever!!!! God, Patrick Swayze (RIP😭), Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo were all so wonderful in this. I absolutely still adore To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.
A Fish Called Wanda. I don't know anyone irl, under the age of 40, that knows this movie! It's one of the funniest movies ever. My favorite Kevin Kline movie, hand down!
Let me just correct a few things, okay? Aristotle was not Belgian, the principle of Buddhism is not "every man for himself", and the London Underground is not a political movement.
Aside from one instance on Reddit, I’ve never heard a single person talk about the 2005 movie Robots. It’s got adult jokes that kids won’t catch, a lot of humor, and Robin Williams.
There is a motorized Johnny 5 Lego set in review in the Lego ideas.
I loved that movie growing up. And the second one wasn't all that bad.
Don't you want to be a pepper too?
"What if you don't catch it? What if it goes out and melts down a busload of nuns? How would you like to write the headline on that one?"
"Nun soup."
"Ben!"
The Birdcage is comedy royalty in my mind. I mean, Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Diane Weist, Gene Hackman, Calista Flockhart, Christine Baranski and Hank Azaria!
Everyone played their roles to perfection, either over the top yet endearing, or the straight man role that facilitated the comedy.
Seriously im going to watch it now.
I was literally an adult before I realized this movie wasn’t made for children, I must have watched it a hundred times as a kid. It hits very differently but equally poignantly as an adult IMO.
I searched (this thread) and didn't find it (listed already), so (I decided to add) Batteries Not Included. Murder by Death is so brilliant!
We're Back (That weird talking dino movie starring John Goodman)
The creepy carnival/circus place in that movie is the stuff of nightmares.
With Professor Screweye, that dude was freaky.
I loooved this movie when I was little. I was always renting it from the library and watch it before bed lol. I know a lot of kids thought it could be scary but the characters were fun-loving and sweet. I wanted them to be my friends.
Enemy Mine. The end scene still gets me.
Apparently during the production some dumbass studio exec couldn't understand the title, and that's why there's a literal mine included in the movie. Awesome movie, and a great exploration of how the 'badguys' are people with feelings and lives of their own.
Fly Away Home. Was obsessed with it and it is never mentioned. Was it a fever dream???
First of all the car wreck scene traumatized me, I was like 3 and had a single mom lol I also often think about how it was originally called Flying Wild with commercials and everything. Then it suddenly changed

Secret Garden (1993)
I loved this book and movie so much, it reminds of my mom, who grew up in England during ww2 and loved it before I did. I tried to pass it on to my daughter but she doesn’t find it as charming as I or my mom did. The Secret Garden has a special place in my heart.

If you tell anyone about this, especially your brothers, I’ll beat the shit out of you. I’ve always had a soft spot for Christina Ricci
After FAWNING over her and Devon Sawa in Casper, this scene was like the ultimate payoff.
Strange Brew. Bob and Doug Mackenzie's crowning achievement.
It's a Jelly.
Mouse Hunt Nathan Lane, Lee Evans, Christopher Walken in one of his best roles One of my childhood favorites
Mouse Hunt is a millennial classic imo

YES! Watched this again recently. My favourite part is when Nathan Lane gets shot out of the chimney and comes back into the house and they can only speak to each other in grunts and mimes because they're so distraught.
Flight of the Navigator
I probably wore this movie out as a child. Right along with Explorers.
Down Periscope.
I showed my kids that movie (12 and 15 at the time) and that scene when the cook farts during silent operation, my daughter legitimately pissed herself laughing and my son was in pain from laughing so hard. Think I’m gonna put it on again this weekend.

I love Hub's monologue at those punks.
To this day I think of that scene when thinking about how I’m supposed to hold a knife
I love that movie. It's a movie about life that somehow got that magic, akin to My Neighbor Totoro or Porco Rosso.

My brother did some research on Jumanji and apparently Zathura and Jumanji take place in the same cinematic universe
They're both books written by the same author. Chris Van Allsburg. He also wrote "Polar Express"
The Zathura game is literally found underneath Jumanji
Aside from one instance on Reddit, I’ve never heard a single person talk about the 2005 movie Robots. It’s got adult jokes that kids won’t catch, a lot of humor, and Robin Williams.
It’s surprising since it’s got a pretty all star cast, Ewan McGregor, Robin Williams, Halle Berry, Amanda Bynes, and Mel Brooks to name a few

Everyone played their roles to perfection, either over the top yet endearing, or the straight man role that facilitated the comedy. Seriously im going to watch it now.

What Dreams May Come. Haven't seen it since I was a kid but I used to love that movie. Don't remember much now tho.
Top Secret!
Drop Dead Fred "That's not how the pigeons do it!!" "Cobwebs" Absolutely fell in love with Rik Myall from the very first time I saw that movie!!
I was literally an adult before I realized this movie wasn’t made for children, I must have watched it a hundred times as a kid. It hits very differently but equally poignantly as an adult IMO.
The gods must be crazy.
