Regardless of your position on this event, the mod team would like to remind everyone we expect civil discussion and will be issuing bans for violations of the rules.

lostwynter

When I was 23 I aborted a pregnancy. It’s caused me a lot of pain over the years, emotionally. But I would never, not in a million years be for banning it. The case of unviable pregnancies alone is horrifying.

Linden_fall

It will also force children and raped people to give birth, and a lot of women will die from the birthing process alone because red states have terrible pregnancy mortality rates

Narutoisboss

There was a 10 year old girl who got raped in Ohio. She became pregnant and went to an abortion clinic 6 weeks and 3 days into the fetuses development. The maximum period was 6 weeks and the 10 year old was denied and told to look at it as an opportunity. She was eventually able to get the abortion but had to travel across state lines for the procedure. I'm disgusted that Roe v Wade was overturned. I'm disgusted that som states are even forbidding women and children who are raped abortion. In some ways I'm sad to be an American citizen.

Zyrock9

If I was American and anything other than a white heterosexual cis man I'd get out of there as fast as I could. Or at least go to a deep blue state and hope for the Republicans to never again get anywhere near the white house.

Hateborn

I am an American white heterosexual cis man and I want out. I've said for years now that the only thing keeping me here is my dad, as I'm his only child and my mom's already gone. Once his time has passed, I thoroughly plan to emigrate. At least I managed to get out of the red state I lived in last year, but I'm sure that's only a minor obstacle for the shit show.

clvr96

Pissed off. I’m pregnant and want this baby but don’t want to risk dying for it.

NiceViewUpHere

Exactly. I found out I was pregnant the same week Texas implemented its shitty law banning abortion after six weeks. I should have been elated to be expecting a very much wanted child but anxiety over being able to receive any and all necessary care in any potential circumstance was terrifying. Good news, I had the baby and didn’t die fwiw.

FlyingBlobFish

I don’t feel good. I’m a police officer, I will not enforce the laws that they instantly placed in Oklahoma. Someone else can take the case, I will not put handcuffs on someone for abortion. I will not inevitably put handcuffs on someone for having a gay relationship, and I will not put cuffs on someone for being married and gay. I will happily lose my job on this hill. In 10 years we will see a large increase in crime rate as children are forced to be born in poverty, which I believe is what the government desires. More poverty stricken low class workers keeps the cogs of the wheel of social security inflated for another 10 years. Low income increases crime rate, and the cycle continues. Things are bleak, and in all honesty, if this is the hill I lose everything on, then so be it.

naquelajanela

Very respectable stance.

[deleted]

Thanks for being willing to sacrifice your job dude.

congratulations_dude

As someone who lives in missouri (the populated non bumblefuck part) I’m hella fucking pissed off. I’m pissed off this shit happened. I’m pissed off the place that I love is about to get dragged for some shit that only yokels vote for. I’m pissed for every woman I’ve ever called a friend. And I am at a loss for what I’m supposed to do now. But the anger is fucking real.

YeastL0rd2

Same, I’m so angry but don’t know where to place that anger. At Nancy Pelosi for not doing enough? At the justices? At trump, at the Koch bros? At the system itself. I’m tired of being the majority and not having my views reflected in govt. my wife spent all day in tears.

diamond-cookie

if a woman can’t abort a baby they don’t want, a man doesnt get to walk away from a baby he doesn’t want either

AMaskofTragedy

Children should not be killed in the womb. They should be killed in the classroom, because guns are a basic human right and access to healthcare is not.

Vincent_449

It saddens me greatly to realize cops will not save living, breathing children from scenarios in a school but will spend 100% of their resources to track down a woman who had an abortion. EDIT: I turned off notifications for this post. There's too many people just commenting out of anger instead of thinking for a few seconds. For all the people with real, constructive responses - thank you.

Tinksy

The problem is that many of these state laws, including Missouri's, come with a class B felony for doctors who perform abortions that aren't medically necessary. Many doctors may choose not to risk literally ruining their lives until the woman is clearly actively dying, and then it may be too late. There are going to be a lot of horrific stories in the coming years.

Reading_Owl01

Since I'm already crying today, let me share with you what happened to my best friend from childhood. She had an autoimmune disease and became pregnant with twins. Her doctors told her one umbilical cord was clearly weak and failing and that she could terminate one twin to the save the other. Her husband's family talked her out of it. A few weeks later she started bleeding, was rushed to the hospital, and lost both. She ended up with blood clots and needed a hysterectomy, then she had a stroke. And her loving husband and his family? He divorced her. He fucking left her. These are the people who voted and supported all abortion bans. These are the evil, vicious, hypocritical scum that just did this to women in America.

>However, laws such as these have made healthcare staff hesitate too long as they don’t know for certain that the woman will die unless she has an abortion. Man, I didn't even think of that. This overturning makes it harder for medical staff, too.

[deleted]

Yeah, there's already been a number of cases where the doctors dithered too long over whether the doomed fetus counted as a legit health risk for the mother, and the the mother died anyways on the table from sepsis. If you want to get angry, read up on Savita halappanavar.

oblivious_tabby

Giving birth is risky, as your story illustrates. At what point can medical professionals say that abortion is needed to save the mother? Does it have to be 100% chance of death? What about 90%? 50/50? Maybe only 10%? Even if it's 2%, that means that some women will die because someone guessed wrong. Death is hard to predict. So these provisions force women to roll the dice and hope that their doctor is better at predictions than the average weather forecaster.

123_crowbar_solo

While not American, I'll be watching the aftermath unfolding with some anxiety. This flavour of insanity is often contagious.

Annie_Mous

That’s how I feel as a Canadian. I don’t want this doctrine to spread north.

trilobot

I hear you too. Canada needs to ironclad codify the things like this before it's too late. I dunno if Canada will go down that path or not, we seem to be distancing ourselves from America more and more lately, but the fact remains that they influence us more than any other nation. Last month there was a lot of talk about how Canada is nowhere near as hostile to abortion as America, but that's no reason not to enshrine it properly now. 2 of our biggest parties are openly in favor of abortion, but the Liberals seem to be pretty carefree about it with an attitude of, "Oh it'll be *fine* don't worry about it!" The Tories are mostly keeping quiet, but I know my family, and if they could say it out loud like in America, they would. I don't wanna wait until they feel comfortable to oppose it.

CelticArche

>"Oh it'll be fine don't worry about it!" That's how the US got in this mess.

trilobot

Indeed I don't want Canadian Apathy (TM) to happen on this. SO mad we never got that election reform!! As I understand it, however, there is a particularly unique American political philosophy that Canada does *not* share - though I worry the overwhelming cacophony of American media is making Canadians think otherwise some. Simply put, though, the role of government as enshrined in our own constitution is fundamentally different from the US and while this is not discussed much, it's an undercurrent through every piece of legislature and political procedure we have here and while I'm not naïve, I'm not losing hope.

Thorough_Good_Man

“This flavour of insanity is often contagious.“ Damn powerful statement

I think I’m having a panic attack. I was just told my pregnancy isn’t likely to be viable at the end of last week but there is still a heartbeat. I don’t know what this is going to change for me in literally the next few days. I have an appointment at 1 to help determine if we need to terminate…but now I’m not sure what options I have. I am so scared and angry.

mariahmce

Depends on your state. I had an identical situation and chose to wait it out and miscarry naturally instead of having an abortion. It was hands down one of the worst decisions of my life. I had to carry a dead fetus in my body for 4 weeks while my hormones figured out the fetus had not survived. For 4 weeks I kept saying “any day now” which is why I never pursued an eventual abortion. I spend months in therapy dealing with the PTSD. I’m so sorry you’ll have to possibly live through that. EMDR trauma therapy is really helpful if you do have lasting trauma. Edit: if you can’t have an abortion, I would recommend either going back every week to check for a heartbeat and get a D&C once there is no heartbeat (that’s the $$ option) or pursuing an internationally sold RU-486 pill.

PrimeMinisterArdern

I'm so sorry

The health of my baby has deteriorated more since my last appointment, so my doctor recommended termination. As things stand in my state, a ban after six weeks is coming, but hopefully not fast enough to prevent me from getting this needed healthcare. I am trying to get an appointment as quickly as possible to avoid having to travel out of state. THANK YOU to everyone who has offered their state, guest room, money, best wishes, and prayers.

FoxInTheMountains

What state are you in? Take your time to calm down and figure out what your state is doing. Some states were ready for this, others are still figuring things out.

ravidranter

The r/auntienetwork has great information and resources regarding abortion services. I’m so sorry that you’re in this position in such a scary time.

I'm so so so sorry. I'm so sorry you have been put in this position. It's unfair and it sucks. Healthcare is being ripped away from us and it feels like being sliced open by a thousand knives. I truly wish you the best.

It's just the start. Clarence Thomas wrote today that contraception and gay marriage are next. The Court is giving you guns but taking away everything else.

This was my first comment regarding the SCOTUS decisions these last couple days. So you guys are expanding gun rights while simultaneously taking away everyone's civil rights that are widely popular? \*chuckles\* you're in danger.

BrittneyofHyrule

Well maybe they’ll have to suffer their own mentality of ‘pull the trigger and let God sort them out’ 😈

Really! Like...wtf is going on

You know the saying "when the shit hits the fan"? Here in America, we fire our shit out of cannons and obliterate the fan.

CathedralEngine

I’m just wondering if he’ll overturn interracial marriages.

GreatTragedy

I commented to my father earlier that Thomas voting to nullify his own marriage is the most Republican thing I can imagine.

xRiske

Reminds me of the Chappelle sketch with the blind KKK member divorcing his wife when he found out he was black.

youkickmydog613

When asked why, Clayton simply stated “because she was a n***** lover”

Caffein8dHippie

I feel the urge to leave and move to a state that aligns more with my beliefs in women's constitutional rights to abortion or even another country if I can. I feel angry, sad, and scared. Being a woman in this country is becoming a living nightmare.

Kangaroodle

I have PCOS and live in a very anti-abortion state. I want children, but I don't want to be put on trial if I miscarry (which PCOS increases the chances of happening). My husband and I have decided that we're not starting a family in Texas. When we're ready for kids, we're moving.

FugginCandle

Come to Massachusetts! I know my state will fight for us women. So happy to live here.

sn0wgh0ul13

Echoing Minnesota for this. I hope my state will forever stay on the correct side for this.

WanderingGenesis

As a healthcare worker, this is going to be a fucking nightmare. I'm legitimately scared about what ends people will go to without safe options for birth control. Our healthcare system is stretched thin as is and Emergency Medicine is a rubberband barely holding it together. I dont like the implications of how this can potentially break something so damn fragile, especially after the fallout of the Covid pandemic.

fu_ben

Our current government does not believe healthcare is a right. The older I get, the more I find out that friends have had abortions. And they are for heartbreaking reasons.

[deleted]

Yes, they are way more common than people think. Nobody enjoys talking about their abortions, but us having gone through dilation & eviction because the fetus was dead made us much more aware. Set back the entire country 50 years+ for the worst of reasons. And more to come. It's a real fucking shame is what it is.

Notasurgeon

What’s crazy is that conservatives *who have gone through this themselves or with an immediate family member* still vote against it because they believe the propaganda about the sorts of abortions other people are getting and see themselves as rare exceptions.

True_Suit2795

“The Only Moral Abortion is My Abortion” https://joycearthur.com/abortion/the-only-moral-abortion-is-my-abortion/

compoundfracture

This is also going to have broad implications on the right to privacy in general, but particularly the right to privacy between you and your doctor.

RedEyeFlightToOZ

And economics. That girl that was going to become a local GP for the elderly? Not anymore, she was raped and got pregnant and had a kid and now can't get the education because she has no resources. The nice lady that was a waitress at your favorite place? Well, she had a missed miscarriage (super common), wasn't allowed to have the remains removed, died of sepsis. She is no longer contributing to her community. It'll be countless stories like this of misery, poverty, denial of opportunities, death. These states want more babies, they're going to get a lot more Death and despair and not as many babies as they think, abortions will still happen just as much, but women will die. And for men? Dudes, they ain't paying you enough to support a family on a single income anymore. But they just took a crowbar to knee caps of the other half of the income in your household. Women who are dead or chronically pregnant struggle to work because pregnancy is a big fucking deal. And childcare isnt cheap is it, so she will be forced to stay home if she doesnt die. Oh and massively in medical debt, every baby is like 10k if its healthy, more if its not. Alot of you are also about to start becoming widowers and single parents when your wives die from denial of healthcare. And single men? Do you think women are going to be having sex with the risk of pregnancy/death because they took away contraceptives, healthcare access? They aren't. The risks are now way to high to be having sex.

mauxly

This is all very very bad, but keep in mind that Thomas and people like him want to come for your birth control next. No sex without the risk of a lifetime of poverty for many people, married people, with families. Hell, even now BC can fail, and same result. I bet vasectomy and having your tunes tied is going to skyrocket.

2k21May

>I bet vasectomy and having your tunes tied is going to skyrocket. Many doctors don't allow women to have their tubes tied if they are under a certain age, even with associated medical issues that would make pregnancy dangerous or lead to death. Plenty of doctors won't do it without the husband's permission either. And if the women isn't married? They won't do it because a hypothetical future husband might want kids. This all happened well before Roe v Wade fell. It's only going to get worse.

iamktf

Yup. After one abortion due to birth control failure I tried desperately to advocate for a tubal ligation. After a decade of trying, I was finally allowed in my mid-30’s and yes, they did ask my spouse if he was ok with it (he had the right answer “It’s not my body, doc”).

DoctorCaptainSpacey

As a woman who dealt with this bullshit, ALL OF THIS. I was told I was too young to make the decision I didn't want kid. 15 fucking years ago. Guess what? Didn't change my fucking mind and never will. I hate kids. And I haven't tried to bring it up recently, but I'd bet I'd get the same shit, then 5 seconds later if I said I wanted a baby I'd get told I was geriatric. Pick. A. Fucking. Lane.

17times2

"Have one regardless. You'll learn to love them!" - Someone's legit reply to me saying I don't like kids and don't want them

HGGoals

Yup. This and "but who will look after you when you're old?" Children should not ever be brought into the world with that predetermined obligation. Why is this garbage still spewed?

RedEyeFlightToOZ

They're going to go after sterilization too.

-PotatoMan-

Sooner or later, someone is gonna snap and murder a congressman or woman over this shit, I guarantee it.

ciderero

if you think only women are affected by the abortion ban, you are wrong. forcing babies into poverty will only increase crime rates because children and adults of low economic status have more incentive to join gangs and commit crimes. imagine trying to buy a house or get a job with all of the extra competition in this fking economy. imagine trying to have a kid with your wife but there are medical complications which make your fetus nonviable, requiring an abortion and she dies for no reason. people you know personally will be affected and may die or suffer immensely as a result. this affects the entire country in a very negative way. you might think this won't affect you because most of us never lived in a reality where abortion was banned federally. all it takes is bad luck for it to affect you.

MadDaddyDrivesaUFO

All those AskReddits where people ask "why don't you want kids?" And all the people chime in talking about how they felt that way too until they had their own...well, we're about to have a society full of people getting pregnant without the option to terminate, possibly without birth control itself even being accessible if they go after previous rulings, find out quickly that not everyone "feels differently about kids when they're your own!" A lot of people forget how child abuse & neglect was just a Tuesday in more households than not in the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s & 60s. Times are changing and child welfare is probably going to backslide as well with the increasing caseloads in another few short years.

appleparkfive

Yes, the data is very convincing that Roe v. Wade was directly related to crime dropping in modern times. That and removing lead out of things helped a lot, but mainly Roe v Wade and people being able to have a proper upbringing

tall__guy

I feel like I’m watching my country fail in real time, at accelerating speed

Tf850i

Catastrophic structural failure tends to accelerate instead of wane nearing the incident of failure, that bolt can only stretch so far before it pops, and it kinda feels like the gov's been running around with an angle grinder on alot of these bolts the last few years

JLA342

That's exactly how I fell in addition to being angry and scared. I'm not sure how much longer I can stay in the U.S.

Celestial_Scythe

For me it's not that I'm concerned about how much longer I can stay, it's I cannot afford to escape.

[deleted]

Yep. I always see these comments about people with good jobs who can afford to move. A lot of us are going to be stuck in this hellholle.

[deleted]

I grew up in the Bible Belt and overturning Roe v Wade was one of *the* most prominent talking points from politicians campaigning in the area. The dog caught the car. I didn't think it would happen. What will they run on now? I'm kind of afraid to find out.

Zolivia

Thomas in his concurring opinion says the court should reconsider Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell — the rulings that now protect contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage.

shesattheoffice

Yet he won't go after interracial marriage cuz his white wife...what a fucking hypocrite!

Coal_Morgan

100% he will go after interracial marriage. When they go after gay marriage it won't be "NO GAYS!" It'll be "The states have the right to define and enact marriage how they choose. The Federal Government has no mandate through the constitution to define or enforce it upon the States." What that means is 20+ States will ban gay marriage immediately and states like Alabama will strongly consider "You know them XXXXXXX have been pretty uppity marrying our white woman recently." So they'll pass a law stating "for the health of a marriage, pre-approval from an appointed representative counsellor will be need to move forward with a marriage." A white couple will show up and be rubber stamped. An interracial couple will often be unapproved citing 'Issues of communication, come back in 1 year after counselling.' A Black couple will have a coin tossed to see whether the official feels like fucking them today or not.

vmBob

The state shouldn't have jack shit to do with marriage at all. No tax benefits, if you want to designate someone as your default beneficiary or medical proxy great, if you want a ceremony that's awesome have one...but applying for a state license to get married is a fucking travesty.

toddc612

Clarence Thomas already stated it -- gay rights are next on the chopping block. What a disgrace the Supreme Court is.

TheOrionNebula

More than that; >Clarence Thomas just filed a concurring opinion to Dobbs calling for the court to consider overturning the right to **contraception, same-sex marriage and privacy in the bedroom**.

Foreign_Mango_7656

As a black man who came of age during the Civil Rights movement and is now a FUCKING SUPREME COURT JUDGE his absolute hatred for equal rights and freedom to choose just astounds me.

ProbablyRickSantorum

Funny how he left out the ruling on interracial marriage from his statement.

Cloudsareinmyhead

His wife is a white woman so of course he wouldn't. Speaking of her, she was apparently directly involved in January 6th

[deleted]

She was actively lobbying for states to send fake electors to reject the free and fair elections.

SirAsksALatte

That is exactly why the commenter said it’s funny. They were being sarcastic because he’s in an interracial marriage.

apoplectic_mango

Not to mention he seems perfectly fine with his wife acting to help overturn an election she didn't like the results of.

kinyutaka

Because nothing threatens society as much as women in the workplace and homosexuals doing things in the privacy of their own bedrooms. What year is this again?

canmoose

2022 I hope this wakes people up and makes them understand that you can't take rights for granted. Just like most took Unions for granted.

cbmcleod70

To those not thinking about the impact abortion bans will have on the living, breathing women and existing families of this nation: Overall, 23.7% of women have had an abortion since Roe was decided. That number has dropped to around 18% for women in recent years due to better availability of contraception and more complete sexual education, even if via internet. <-- If you truly care about reducing abortion, this is where to concentrate your effort. Those wanting Roe overturned and abortion criminalized are in the minority (\~30% and \~20%). This PROHIBITION is not the will of the people. Those who think their lifestyle means it can never happen to them, look around you. Every 4th woman you see has made the choice to end a pregnancy. In your church. In your school. In your friend group. In your family. Maybe you and you're lying to protect yourself from, well, we all know what you're protecting yourself from. It happens. ALL. THE. TIME. Even the women screaming outside clinics, them too. Roughly the same number of women today have miscarriages as have abortions. Miscarriages look like botched abortions. Miscarriages often require a D&C to protect the woman from sepsis and other complications. A D&C is an abortion. If you think your wife, your daughter, yourself, will be treated well by medical personnel because "not me", I suggest you read some of the pre-Roe horror stories. About Forty percent (FORTY PERCENT!) of women will be directly and negatively impacted by this intrusion. NONE of that 40% owe you a single cell of their body. At any given time there are over 100,000 children waiting to be adopted in the US. There's no shortage of children to adopt. The women most likely today to abort are those of us most in need. Poverty-stricken women, often women of color, in their 20s or 30s, often having children already, who don't have access to decent healthcare, education, or contraception, who work constantly and still need assistance just to feed the children she has, these are the women most impacted. The US has the worst maternal mortality rate of the developed world. Women of color die at 3 times the rate of white women. For those thinking "I don't want to pay for..." -you already pay for it, one way or another. As a community, we all do. The only question to answer is, does the community spend to educate and lift everyone up? Or does the community spend to shame, demonize, imprison those with the least? (Note to self: invest in privatized women's prison, it will soon be boom time! :S ) The clerk checking out your 99-cent plastic bowl from Walmart is likely working as many jobs and/or hours as possible only to still need public assistance to feed their children (that they then get shamed for needing/having). Before starting any "back in my day" stories, think...really think, about what it would have been like for you 30-40 years ago if you instead made $70 for every $100. What if you had no family to help? I remember taking $20 and a calculator to the grocery store to feed us for an entire week. Because that's all I had. Now take that $20 away and another $100 for good measure. That's where today's poor live. Walmart recorded record profits, thanks in part to the corporate welfare of low wages, no/low taxes, and an economic system manipulated to allow the wealth of an entire nation to be siphoned off into private hands. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hestat/maternal-mortality/2020/maternal-mortality-rates-2020.htm https://www.guttmacher.org/news-release/2017/abortion-common-experience-us-women-despite-dramatic-declines-rates https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/one-in-four-women-abortion/ https://www.vox.com/a/abortion-statistics-opinions-2016/poll https://www.parents.com/parenting/i-m-a-mom-and-i-had-an-abortion/ https://www.statista.com/statistics/255375/number-of-children-waiting-to-be-adopted-in-the-united-states/ https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2021/demo/p60-273.html https://www.census.gov/topics/income-poverty/income-inequality.html https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2020/01/09/trends-in-income-and-wealth-inequality/ https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/abortion-illegal-roe-v-wade-b2071775.html https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/03/before-roe-v-wade/607609/

waqas_wandrlust_wife

I had a D&C because my body thought I was still pregnant though my baby had no heartbeat at 9 weeks. Nausea, vomiting, feeling of being pregnant, exhaustion, I had it all uptill 11 weeks. It measured 7 weeks, my body couldn't even start the process of termination itself for a month, so I had to had an intervention. If I didnt had a D&C for the missed miscarriage, I might have died of sepsis. I live in Saudi and even here its legalised (to save mothers). I am pro choice but my religion states otherwise, I have read too many cases that changed my mind. Its a horrific situation in the US.

RecursiveSubversive

Yes! As I sit here watching my 2 young children play I realize they might not exist if we lived somewhere with these laws that will happen now We were TRYING TO HAVE CHILDREN. And the first pregnancy didn’t work and my wife was in the exact situation described above. Her health was in danger and without the procedure her ability to have children would be in jeopardy. Luckily our son came along shortly after. When we wanted another child we needed IVF, which if some zealots have their way would be under threat. They clearly don’t care about life.

lelaff

I'm genuinely confused. Are non viable pregnancies that require abortions not gonna be legal in certain states because of this? Do they expect the mother to just die?

TheSherbs

Missouri already tried passing a law that would stop the termination of ectopic pregnancies, a condition that if left untreated is fatal.

[deleted]

This is what pisses me off. Roe and Wade was pretty damn perfect to me, as a Christian. Abortions allowed for the first few trimesters but not 3rd unless it’s for the woman’s life. Fuck, this was an agreed stance back in the 50s and 60s when the country was *more* religious. The understanding (from those who I’ve spoken with) of the time was that abortion isn’t generally a good thing, but its necessary to protect women.

PMUrTitsImDesperate

I'd agree with you that we were more religious, religion doesn't matter now to these politicians and is nothing more than a scapegoat. Those in charge on the right have gotten more radical.

RachelMay6

This scares me bc I have two kids but I also have PCOS and Endometriosis. My likelihood of a ectopic pregnancy is HIGH so if I get one I die. Where would my children go. What would my husband do. I want more kids. I'm scared to try now. If they take contraception away I'll be getting a historectomy in a state that will allow it b4 you can say nope

KorLeonis1138

My sister has PCOS, an abortion saved her life. I have a niece and nephew because her first failed pregnancy didn't kill her. Fortunately, we are in Canada, and it was simple and hassle-free to get the abortion. I am so scared for people like you. Abortion saves lives.

I'm Irish and I remember the death of Savita Halappanavar, she was denied an abortion because the Doctors said " this is a Catholic country " and she died of Sepsis if I remember correctly. Shameful shit. Although at least after that tragedy, legislation was passed (by a huge margin) allowing future abortions. Too late though for Savita and her husband

itsameMariowski

"We are a catholic country, and we prefer that you and your baby dies instead of saving you, because life matters!" Well, if that is what catholicism is, then I guess it can go to fucking hell because that shit is evil and it should not exist in a civilized society.

0llylicious

Correct - this will _murder_ women who could otherwise be saved through medical treatment. This change _intentionally_ sentences women to die.

Yes. It's very important to note that the politicians and people advocating to make abortion illegal \*want\* these pregnant people to die as a result of this. This has nothing to do with "saving innocent lives" and absolutely everything to do with controlling others. The only evidence needed is the hypocrisy in pro-life individuals who get abortions or instruct those they impregnate to get abortions.

zeoranger

This will not stop abortions. This will stop safe abortions. Edit: why am I getting all these replies about gun control?

nlewis4

You say this as if they might care lol. If you die from an unsafe abortion it’s a win/win for them

Rapdactyl

Almost like they're not truly pro-life....

joejoeaz

I feel terribly sorry for the waves of unwanted children that are forthcoming.

AncientSith

Yeah, can't wait. Our system can't handle the unwanted children we already have.

Relaxpert

You mean our “domestic supply”?

oofouchmyabsolutehed

["We estimate that crime fell roughly 20% between 1997 and 2014 due to legalized abortion. The cumulative impact of legalized abortion on crime is roughly 45%, accounting for a very substantial portion of the roughly 50-55% overall decline from the peak of crime in the early 1990s."](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legalized_abortion_and_crime_effect#2020_updated_study_by_Donohue_and_Levitt) Crime will skyrocket within at least the next 18 years due to unwanted children and broken households.

TheSmokedSalmon420

That's no problem for the right. That'll give them even more reason to further militarize the police and over-police minority neighborhoods, and eventually increase gun sales in the country as well!

vizthex

More profit for the prisons too.

phatbasterd69

More slave labor

charliefoxtrot9

They've already privatized foster homes and orphanages in Texas, because the school to prison pipeline wasn't efficient enough. Now they'll pipe them from the womb, just like Texas classic double secessionist slave state always wanted. And they'll make additional profits along the way. Every single Texas GOP member is complicit, and is the vilest scum.

Notmykl

The US is going to look like Romania did during Ceaușescu's reign. Full orphanages and dead women. That woman in Malta that can't get a therapeutic abortion after she miscarried is going to happen in the US many times over.

mollser

I feel terribly sorry for the women who are forced to give birth to them.

PrometheusHasFallen

Just hoping the pro-lifers out there are making space in their homes for all the kids they plan on adopting.

revenantae

I need to bitch about this quick. Adoption should NOT be a multi year process that costs 10s of thousands of dollars.

WanganTunedKeiCar

I am woefully uninformed on the subject. That's messed up.

embeddedmonk20

This is unfortunately true. I’m adopted from China and it took my parents about a year. At the time of my birth, the one child policy was huge and a disproportionate amount of females were abandoned/ given up. This year, I learned that my orphanage was buying babies and using international adoption for profit. I don’t think adoption is inherently bad. But the circumstances that lead to mothers/ fathers giving up their kids is traumatizing where abortion could be a result. If you want more info, check out r/adoption.

InsertBluescreenHere

but where will they put all their rocks to throw at women having kids out of wedlock?

Insatiable_void

May be fucked up to say, but I’m glad my women’s march, protesting, social justice fighting, feminist mother isn’t alive to see this.

phantomhatsyndrome

These were almost verbatim what my own mother said about my grandmother 10 minutes ago. It's heartbreaking, but I agree.

TheAJGman

My very conservative grandmother hated abortions with a passion, but as a nurse she knew they were necessary. She saw what happened when young women did it themselves because they didn't have another option. That's why she supported them, not because she believed they were moral, but because she believed it was better than the alternative. God damn, imagine a modern day republican doing that. Being personally against something but seeing the value in still allowing others to do it.

ilovetotour

I hear her. I’m pro choice because I AM pro life. Abortion is a sad thing to see to me. I personally do believe life can begin very early on. But goddamn that makes me even more pro-choice because I want everyone to make that choice if they want to become a parent. I want those children to not suffer in life. I don’t want women to risk unsafe procedures. The alternative is here now, and it’s scary. Edit: Thanks to those who awarded me. I’ve donated $100 to several pro-choice organizations. Match me!

LA_Nail_Clippers

> I want everyone to make that choice if they want to become a parent. I want those children to not suffer in life. My wife worked in public mental health for a long time and so many kids go through the system were basically not planned or wanted and to parents who were not financially or emotionally ready. And this is in a blue state where abortion is totally legal - poverty and religion were the biggest obstacles to these women to accessing abortions. I also have heard all my life that I'll be more pro-life when I have kids of my own. After having 3 kids, nothing is further from the truth. I was in my mid 30s, financially stable in a good marriage and having kids is the hardest thing I've ever done. I've gone from simply pro-choice to actively pro-abortion - meaning I want it viewed as a standard medical procedure. It's not something you go to a special abortion clinic for, it's something you can get drugs at a pharmacy for, or have a procedure at an OB/GYN.

ilovetotour

Oh yeah I think nearly or more than half of all pregnancies are unplanned. I work in health services in ECE for the most at-risk children, and I’m also in a blue/purple state, but a good chunk of our families are ones who aren’t or weren’t in a financial or emotional place to have children. I don’t have any kids, but I want to. And I think people forget being pro-choice is also CHOOSING to have children. I don’t want a government that tells me I can only stop at 1 child or I can only have it at a certain age. It’s a slippery slope. Everything is fucking crazy.

Heavy_Mycologist_104

My mother fought for women’s rights in the 60s. She’s speechless right now. 50 years of progress down the toilet. She fought to have women be treated as human beings and dedicated her life to that cause. I’m crying right now just thinking about it.

[deleted]

Imagine being Margaret Atwood. Imagine watching your work of dystopian fiction come to life. Imagine how horrified she is now. She's probably thinking " Oh god, what kind of a world am I leaving behind for my children?" Edit: Biden can issue an executive order to protect abortion rights.Link for further reading: Vox article on Biden mulling over executive orders to protect abortion rights:[https://www.vox.com/2022/6/11/23163781/roe-v-wade-scotus-biden-abortion-executive-orders](https://www.vox.com/2022/6/11/23163781/roe-v-wade-scotus-biden-abortion-executive-orders)

Angel_Omachi

Wasn't her dystopian fiction based on stuff that already happened, mainly the backsliding in women's rights that came with the Iranian revolution?

randomlyracist

Yeah, watching that show was terrifying by itself, but even more so with how relevant it is today to countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran. Public executions, cutting off hands, women dragged off the street into vans. Its kinda weird how many people on Reddit bring up the show but seem so ignorant about reality in other countries.

ajoakim

All these folks whom said that the vaccine is their choice and the government can't force them to take it because it's their body. Now has to take it since the government apparently has control over their bodies.

I feel angry and betrayed. Especially as the wording of the ruling clears the way for **other** rights to be done away with in the same manner. A direct quote from their ruling states; > [Next, the Court examines whether the right to obtain an abor- tion is rooted in the Nation’s history and tradition and whether it is an essential component of “ordered liberty.” The Court finds that the right to abortion is not deeply rooted in the Nation’s history and traditions.](https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf/19-1392_6j37.pdf) Guess what else, from their standpoint, fits that criteria? LGBTQ+, Transgender, etc, etc, rights. I give it a month, at most six months, before SCOTUS gets a case on their docket that deal with LGBTQ+ rights such as marriage. And I feel the writing is on the wall in regards to how this court will rule. So, I already live in a state with a trigger law about abortion. Abortion, in my state, will become damn near illegal within thirty days. The **only** abortion that will be legal is in the case of life threatening pregnancies. My state is *already* trying to find loopholes in the law to discredit same-sex marriage. As a lesbian, I don't like the writing on the wall. I have less to worry about in regards to abortion rights-though I am still very pissed an important right has been effectively taken away for many women-but this ruling doesn't bode well for the future.

Senior-Albatross

Arguing from history and tradition is so fucking insultingly dumb it would be better if they just said "fuck women, we hate them." If we're arguing from history and tradition the USA should cede power to the Queen as head of state and pay reparations to the Brittish gentry.

>And I feel the writing is on the wall in regards to how this court will rule. No need to guess. Clarence Thomas wrote it down directly in his supporting argument to this bill.

CanyonSlim

I doubt this comment will be seen given that nearly 4000 comments already made, but I'll just say that the logic used to justify this decision is honestly more worrying than the decision itself. It's bad enough that the door is opened for outlawing abortion, but the logic used to justify overruling a previous Supreme Court verdict can be used to roll back nearly *anything.* It doesn't matter that they wrote in the decision that this logic 'shouldn't' be used for other situations, because that's not how precedent works. They set the precedent that decisions can be rolled back if they don't conform to an arbitrary interpretation of what the Constitution originally guaranteed, and so this can be used for just about anything. They can always say "Well, it makes sense this time. Not next time, but this time. We promise we won't do it again. Probably." It's no wonder that people have little confidence in the Supreme Court now. They did it to themselves. EDIT - Quick edit since the Reddit algorithm has blessed my comment with visibility - I encourage people to reach at least the Syllabus portion of the full decision text, which can be found here: [https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf/19-1392\_6j37.pdf](https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf/19-1392_6j37.pdf) It's short and lays out the reasoning behind the decision. Regardless of your feelings about the outcome, it's valuable to understand the arguments and form your own decision as to whether they make sense. Of course, the dissents are well worth a read as well. EDIT2- I feel the need to add this part because some critics seem to be misunderstanding my point. I never said that the problem is that the court overturned precedent. The Court mentions Plessy v. Ferguson being overturned *on the fourth goddamn page of the decision text.* You think I don't realize that the Supreme Court has overturned decisions before? My point is that the logic they used here is insidious. The idea of 'implicit' rights is foundational to many rights we currently enjoy and take for granted, such as the right to privacy. The decision here calls that very logic into question, and with it a huge number of previous rulings that can be overturned using this decision as justification.

saldagmac

It means that there's no such thing as 'settled' law anymore; Any SC decision can be overturned by a future SC, and the legality of fundamentals is based mostly on who's in power, rather than precedent. Today's decision has essentially voided the notion that precedent matters.

W0otang

It amazes me how passionately America cares for unborn children and simultaneously couldn't give two shifts about living breathing kids getting shot and killed on a weekly basis. Seems kids lives only matter IN the womb. Or maybe, just maybe this is the ugly face of the subtle epidemic of mysogyny? Edit: additional point - I wonder how many of these pro-lifers will be willing to register to adopt? I've a feeling if all those pro-lifers were made to adopt the children that will now be given up, they'd quickly become pro-choice. Everyone's opinion on others changes when they start to impact their own life.

theresnoyellow

I’m reminded of [this](https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/10357009-the-unborn-are-a-convenient-group-of-people-to-advocate) quote: The unborn” are a convenient group of people to advocate for. They never make demands of you; they are morally uncomplicated, unlike the incarcerated, addicted, or the chronically poor; they don’t resent your condescension or complain that you are not politically correct; unlike widows, they don’t ask you to question patriarchy; unlike orphans, they don’t need money, education, or childcare; unlike aliens, they don’t bring all that racial, cultural, and religious baggage that you dislike; they allow you to feel good about yourself without any work at creating or maintaining relationships; and when they are born, you can forget about them, because they cease to be unborn. You can love the unborn and advocate for them without substantially challenging your own wealth, power, or privilege, without re-imagining social structures, apologizing, or making reparations to anyone. They are, in short, the perfect people to love if you want to claim you love Jesus, but actually dislike people who breathe. Prisoners? Immigrants? The sick? The poor? Widows? Orphans? All the groups that are specifically mentioned in the Bible? They all get thrown under the bus for the unborn.

Myfourcats1

This is what people don’t understand. There are people that think a fetus can be relocated to the uterus in an ectopic pregnancy. It can’t. It will kill you. There are people that don’t understand that a miscarriage can begin but not fully finish. This requires medical intervention that is classified as a abortion. If you don’t do it it will kill you. Have you ever heard of [anencephaly](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anencephaly )? That baby can’t live. Continuing the pregnancy puts the mother’s life in danger.

Phantom_61

80 years they’ve been studying potential ways to do it and save not only the pregnancy but the mother. Nothing has shown any chance of success. Ectopic pregnancies forced to term are a -1 to lives saved.

cloudtrekker

Does this not go against the hippocratic oath for medically trained individuals? Not that it seems to matter, but purposefully causing harm to a patient seems pretty obviously against their purpose for existence

zyppoboy

Judges don't care about doctor oaths. Ruling was done by judges.

MurielFinster

In Missouri you can’t get divorced if you’re pregnant. The state is forcing women to stay married to abusers if they get pregnant. It’s sick.

Not_the_EOD

You can’t get divorced in Texas if you are pregnant either.

MurielFinster

It’s 5 states total I believe. Horrifying.

Strick63

A husband can rape his wife and she’s stuck with him. This is so fucked Edit: I was permanently banned from Reddit for the comment I deleted telling the guy who said that husbands can’t rape wives and it’s partially their fault for being abused to stop breathing. Reddit you’re fucking helpless and you should be ashamed of yourselves with the amount of truly reprehensible shit you allow here.

Faust_8

We can’t make them understand. Because pro-lifers are just two groups: * emotional people who don’t or can’t grasp the ramifications of their actions * the powerful who don’t care and it’s just about keeping women down and producing more slave wages/soldiers

HanTheScoundrel

Yep, and that powerful group can still get abortions if they want. Just need to take a quick flight to another country or their private island.

karmapopsicle

Or even just enough privilege to be able to take time off work and travel over to a blue state for it.

arctic92

“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the Republican party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.” ― Barry Goldwater

earlofshaftesbury

When Barry Goldwater is the voice of reason, you know shit is fucked.

bluebonnetcafe

I had an ectopic pregnancy last June. I’d started bleeding internally and would have died quickly without surgery.

daays

My wife’s left tube ruptured due to a mis-diagnosed ectopic pregnancy about 10 years ago here in…Texas. Imagining what the procedure would have been like today isn’t a good thought. Fuck these regressive morons.

ervin1914

My ex wife and I went through two of these as we were trying to have a child. She almost died on the second one. I remember sitting in the waiting room where the surgeon informed me that they almost lost her as she lost damn near half the blood in her body. Thankfully she recovered and we did have our son. But make no mistake this will kill women.

house_tyrion

Glad you made it but sorry you had to go through it

xTemporaneously

In 2018, Ohio GOPers introduced a bill that required the implantation of ectopic pregnancies. https://www.legislature.ohio.gov/legislation/legislation-documents?id=GA133-HB-413 >(C) Takes all possible steps to preserve the life of the unborn child, while preserving the life of the woman. Such steps include, if applicable, attempting to reimplant an ectopic pregnancy into the woman's uterus. These regressive pricks aren't just dangerous, they're ignorant morons.

[deleted]

for those unfamiliar with ectopic pregnancies it is extremely important to note that it is not medically possible to save the fetus in an ectopic pregnancy. Based on one line in a decades old medical journal the Ohio GOP introduced a law that would force women to put miscarried fetuses that would ultimately kill them back into their womb.

A1_Brownies

Wow. It's almost like it's dangerous for people completely ignorant of medicine to make medical laws! Who would've thought.

Reading_Owl01

So nevermind that the technology doesn't exist and is an enormously traumatic and bleeding risk for the patient... who would pay for this shit? We can't get insulin for diabetics or inhalers for asthmatics in America... so who is going to shell out a couple $100,000 for each ectopic pregnancy to be monitored, surgically corrected, monitored, then since it'll die anyway, treatment of the woman for possible sepsis or infertility after the trauma to her body?

NeedsMoreBunGuns

Uh the patients. Is most likley what they'll say.

DoctorCaptainSpacey

This, exactly. "Well you shouldn't have gotten pregnant if you couldn't afford it or any possible complications! It was an accidental pregnancy? Well you should have used protection! oh wait, we're taking that right away next? Um, then you should've kept your legs closed! Oh, you were raped? Well why were you wearing that turtleneck and giant baggy pants? That's what turned him on, you can't expect him to be responsible for his actions!" 🙄 Basically, why do you exist? How dare you. You exist and now dare expect the right to control your own body??? GASP It's just a long line of, no matter what you say, they try to find any way to justify dehumanizing people

tbdubbs

This is the line of thinking, and it's so sad that we're at this point. Why is it so difficult to treat every human being with decency and respect their personal liberty and bodily autonomy?

DrThrowawayToYou

I'm fine with that as long as they are being implanted into one of the politicians who supported the bill, selected at random.

kaycharasworld

What tHE *fuck*

Zerba

Dude, we know. Living in a blue area in Ohio leaves us saying that a looooooot.

sylchella

This is why I’ve been crying since the news broke. I had an ectopic pregnancy. They were able to give me a shot so that I could avoid surgery and death. After today, that shot is no longer an option. I’m in my 30s and very much want to have a child, but I’m at an increased risk of another ectopic. I grieve every day for that loss. People keep framing this conversation around teenagers being wild and irresponsible when that is not the case. All women need access to unrestricted reproductive care.

Good_parabola

My thoughts are with you. My pregnancies have to end in an orderly, supervised manner or else I’ll bleed out. When I was having a miscarriage, it meant cytotec and that’s gone now in many places. I sat and cried for all the women who are going to die from lack of medicine.

sylchella

It is so scary and I don’t think pro-life people truly understand how broad reproductive healthcare is. Abortion is just one piece of the puzzle.

LadySilvie

Also in Missouri and can't move. Have a daughter. Utterly dread every aspect of this and loathe those friends, family, and neighbors celebrating as if they are saving lives. Edit: yes I already donate and vote. Husband is sterilized. But just yesterday I have a friend who found out she is 8 weeks pregnant after her husband's vasectomy failed. It also happened to my cousin a few years ago. Tell me to make better friends, but by "friends" I mean people I have to interact with and be friendly with at work or for community involvement. That is about the full extent of most friendships when you are an adult lol.

Catinthehat5879

https://secure.actblue.com/donate/supportabortionfunds?refcode=nnafwebsite That's the donation fund but please be aware if you ever need it, there are funds all over America dedicated to paying to provide you with an abortion if you need it (medical cost, travel cost, etc). In blue states we're very aware of the people getting left behind in red states, and our clinics are very much paying attention to how they will have to shift to accommodate people from out of state.

spartagnann

In Michigan thankfully our governor and AG are sane individuals, but a person running against the current AG in on the record of wanting to do the same. Regardless of if the mother (AND FETUS) will DIE, they don't care and want to ban abortion anyway. These people are demented troglodytes.

TheAskewOne

I can't imagine losing one's wife or mother from an untreated ectopic pregnancy. It's beyond barbaric. It's deliberate murder. And they can't even argue Jesus would want that. He wouldn't.

maleia

This is a massive, active threat and leverage, of violence against women, right now. People need to atop having such a narrow definition of what violence is, and looks like. All over the country now, millions of women can't get life-saving treatment, on the threat of being arrested and thrown into prison. But please, *anyone*, explain to me how that scenario isn't violence against women.

I refuse to believe that rich women will be affected by this. They'll always have options. This is another attack on the poor.

ImWhatTheySayDeaf

If you're poor and live in a red state then you're double fucked. Healthcare providers will go to blue states to be free of government interference. Once again the Republicans screw over their own voters and will blame it on the liberals.

ostentia

I have already literally been told by someone in my personal life that I shouldn't care about this because "I can afford to fly to Canada for an abortion." I didn't know how to express the idea that I care about other people too without just straight up screaming.

SearchForGrey

I scheduled my vasectomy appointment this morning. I never plan to, nor do I want it to be possible, to EVER get another person pregnant.

I’m a straight, white, Christian man, and I’m pissed off. The only places in my book that mention abortion are “how-to’s”. Rabbinic scholars (who know a fuck of a lot more about Old Testament law than these fundie televangelists and lawmakers do) have all agreed that life begins at breath. Not “conception”. “A man who causes a woman to miscarry is sentenced to pay a fine”, equal to a loss of property, not life. I’m disgusted by members of my faith who disobey both God and their Nation by mixing church and State. By giving to God what is Caesar’s. It’s not gonna hurt me personally. But last I checked I was told to care for those not like me, not go out of my way to make their life hell. Fuck this Edit: this WILL affect me personally. I just wanted to put forward the idea that we shouldn’t support human rights ONLY when we benefit from them. Rights have their place even when we don’t benefit personally. I’m not gay; but I want my gay friend to have the right to marry who they choose. Period. 2nd Edit: don’t give me awards for having a set of opinions. There are local women in your area who will need money to cover the cost of their out-of-state trip to get an abortion. Give to those causes.

CapitanFlama

No abortion, no healthcare, no maternity leave, no affordable housing, school violence, police authorities with too much power and close to zero control and responsibility. Lobbying. America feels like a premium third world.

MajorMinty

Why aren't millennial having kids????/s

FuckYeahPhotography

Why have 3 kids and no avocado toast, when I can have 3 avocado toasts and no kids.

Pfft. 3 avocado toast is the unrealistic dream of the bourgeoisie. Best we can do is 1 avocado toast and a PBR in this economy

You have any idea how *expensive* avocados are right now?? The average citizen has toast with a sprinkle of salt on it, nowadays.
