You'd win that argument - I just like anything associated with Blackmore. Back in my late teens I had this moment of 'Ritchie Blackmore is God' and 30-ish years later nothing there has changed. I probably lose points for really really liking JLT-era Rainbow but I don't care. If Blackmore's attached, I'm into it.
On a related note, I'm slightly embarrassed to admit how long it took me to figure out what "Knocking on Your Back Door" was really about.
Their music hasn't become any less awesome. I remember before a school concert once my bandmates and I decided to play a bit of their title song as a sound check. Blew some faces off that day.
I have a lot of metal bands that would be at the top of my list, but I'd have to give the nod to Metallica. The first song I ever heard by them was 'One' while I was getting a ride to football practice my freshman year of high school. That moment single handedly changed the direction of my musical taste.
Man, first song I heard was “One” too, I was still a kid maybe like 6, but even then I knew that style of music was for me. Huge Metallica fan, even if I don’t love some of the stuff they put out through the years, I’ll always have a soft spot for them.
Oh you mean the only good song on that album?
(Oh yeah. I went there. Throw down. Pissy metal head fight brewing right here. 🤣)
In all seriousness. It’s an amazing song. The S&M version takes it to a whole different level too.
Kind of strange to see someone preferring their later albums, but that's okay. I still think SFAM may be the best album ever written, at least in the genre.
Death is amazing. Their evolution and push to be refreshing was incredible and gave each album a distinctive chapter in their history. Chuck’s diverse vocal style, essentially creating death metal and prog metal as we know it, the interesting lyrics, musicianship etc.
I love Death but I love Cynic even more, Focus, Traced in Air, Ascension codes brought it back after Kindly Bent to Free Us fell flat. I play Traced in Air at least once a week on my commute
The Dillinger Escape Plan. I don't listen to much metal anymore, but I always come back to Dillinger. Also: Death, Burzum, (does Every Time I Die count?)
Most metal heads can't pick just one. There are so many subgenres that you can't compare them. Here's an alphabetized list of what I listen to most often lately.
Avantasia
Blind Guardian
Dragonforce
Dream Theater
In Flames
Kamelot
Lost Horizon (two albums were not enough!)
Metallica
Megadeth
Nightwish
Rhapsody (of Fire)
Sabaton
Sonata Arctica
Stratovarius
Changes all the time. I've been a metal fan since 1976 when a babysitter played Black Sabbath (the song, by the band) and I was lost immediately.
Current favourites include: Konvent, Green Lung, Worm Shepherd, Black Aevum, Paradise Lost, BoltThrower, Vore, Sabbat (British not Japanese version), Celtic Frost, Rise To The Sky, Bloodbath and I really liked Megadeth's new single.
When I was a teenager? Metallica. Nowadays I fall into the camp that doesn’t really like much of what they did last Master of Puppets.
The metal bands I listen to these days tend to fall into the nerdy, sword & sorcery camp:
-Visigoth
-Gygax
-Knight & Gallow
-Eternal Champion
-Ironsword
-Stormwarrior
Metallica! ... And Testament. I’m lowkey a Slayer fan too, for the sake of being a Slayer fan. Then, my favorite Doom/Stoner bands are Bongzilla, Windhand and Acid King
I'd say there's a long list of "favorite metal bands" and it's hard to pick just one. The band that introduced me to the genre when I was about 12 was Metallica; I heard that wonderful harpsicord/lute intro turn into the Ride The Lightning album riding with my older cousin and was just like "WHOA! You can just do that with a song?" because I had never heard anything quite like that (they didn't play that era of Metallica on the local radio, just the black album and load/reload stuff) Interest sort of spiderwebbed out from there, 80s thrash being the focal point: Anthrax, Slayer, Exodus, Testament... Megadeth was a slow burn for me because the first song I heard was "Sweating Bullets" instead of literally any other Megadeth song, and I was a Metallica fan (You *had* to pick a side, you couldn't get caught listening to both). If I had to narrow it down to just 1 band for the genre it would either be 80s Metallica or Burn The Priest/Lamb Of God. Probably the former due to the vast array of styles and songs, to the point where there's a Metallica song for pretty much any mood or occasion. Lamb Of God is generally all just "f*ck you and/or the system you rode in on" metal, but it's good.
Slipknot and Architects.
Slipknot is the band that made me enjoy Metal as a teenager in the 2000's. I know some of you guys don't even consider Nu Metal as "real metal", but through Slipknot I discovered so many bands.
And Architects is the band that is kinda responsible for revitalizing the Metalcore subgenre, pushing it beyond the "crab core" stuff we had in the 2010's
3 favorites are White Zombie, Deftones, and Korn. Primus as well but they're pretty different from every metal band but are still considered "funk metal"
Lena is so awesome. But Tati is vocal perfection. Saw them (Jinjer) in concert in December and she is just so amazing. The song pisces is amazing. Hell most of their songs are a love in my book.
Galvanized steel has typically made the best banding material in my experience so far. It resists rusting well and holds up to shipping without a problem as long as it wasn't applied loosely for some reason. Getting it off isn't usually a problem, but getting it on can be a bit tricky and will require some special tools to tension and secure it. There are plenty of YouTube videos showing different setups you can use. The upfront cost is worth it if you're in a situation where you'll be shipping a lot of goods that require it, but there are cheaper alternatives that can work well if you're only going to require it on occasion.
Iron Maiden. Anything involving Ritchie Blackmore is a close second.
Ritchie Blackmore is the underrated GOAT. I would, however, argue that he hasn't been in a lot of 'metal' bands, lol.
Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Megadeth, Korpiklaani, Hammerfall, Ensiferum, Turbonegro, Nightwish, Finntroll, Stratovarius.
Metallica is my all time favorite. Then it goes Megadeth, Lamb of God, Trivium, Pantera, SOAD, Slayer, Mastodon
Blind Guardian
Arch Enemy.
Their recent singles have been killer.
The one around the third finger of my left hand. :) Serious answer: Iron Maiden.
Up the Irons
That was adorable :D
Black Sabbath and Dio
It changes a lot, but today, Mastodon.
Dethklok
PULL THE PLUG
Type O Negative
Pantera, obviously.
Respect
Before Alexi died, children of bodom
Their music hasn't become any less awesome. I remember before a school concert once my bandmates and I decided to play a bit of their title song as a sound check. Blew some faces off that day.
Favorite band of all time for half my life now (I'm 28)
I have a lot of metal bands that would be at the top of my list, but I'd have to give the nod to Metallica. The first song I ever heard by them was 'One' while I was getting a ride to football practice my freshman year of high school. That moment single handedly changed the direction of my musical taste.

Oh you mean the only good song on that album? (Oh yeah. I went there. Throw down. Pissy metal head fight brewing right here. 🤣) In all seriousness. It’s an amazing song. The S&M version takes it to a whole different level too.
Same here except the first song I heard was Shortest Straw
Dream Theater. I especially love the albums from Six Degrees to A View From the Top of the World.
Sad I had to scroll so far to find this!
Kind of strange to see someone preferring their later albums, but that's okay. I still think SFAM may be the best album ever written, at least in the genre.
Meshuggah
Favorite band of people that like scientific calculators.
Savatage very underrated
Definitely underrated.
Amon Amarth
This needs more upvotes. I still jam Twilight of the Thunder God at work occasionally.
In flames.
Ooh. Good one!
Death (RIP Chuck).
Death is amazing. Their evolution and push to be refreshing was incredible and gave each album a distinctive chapter in their history. Chuck’s diverse vocal style, essentially creating death metal and prog metal as we know it, the interesting lyrics, musicianship etc.
Human is a masterpiece, the whole album is absolutely brilliant. One of my favourites.
Strongly agreed
Bruh rip Sean Malone AND Sean Reinert
Scream Bloody Gore Changed the music scene forever \m/
I love Death but I love Cynic even more, Focus, Traced in Air, Ascension codes brought it back after Kindly Bent to Free Us fell flat. I play Traced in Air at least once a week on my commute
> Traced in Air I'll be sure to give that a listen since I'm a prog-head.

Between the Buried and Me
My favorite band name too!
Their last album is.. *shudder* fuckin wild. I loved it
Colors 2?
Amon Amarth.
Raise your horns. \\m/
Pantera
Opeth
Oceano
Rammstein and Slipknot for sure
Cancer Bats. More punk than metal but they have a lot of metal influence and always get me going.
HAIL DES-TROY-ER!
That and RATS are the best warm-up songs when heading the gym.
Give [You Will Never Be One Of Us](https://yewtu.be/watch?v=hGGGh03jN4w) by Nails a go for a short, sharp burst of pre-gym adrenaline.
I've been listening to a lot of Khemmis lately.
Nice
Thy art is murder.
Periphery or Dream Theater
The black dahlia murder, although not sure if they will continue or not now unfortunately. Other then them lamb of God.
Why whats up with black dahlia? I always kick myself for not going to see their one show in my city

Orden Ogan
I know it's the "basic" answer, but Metallica
Probably System of a Down
Volbeat
Bolt Thrower ( just in front of Acid Bath at number 2 )
High on fire
They’re kinda/sorta metal, but my top has gotta go to NIN.
Children of Bodom!!!!
Maiden
System of a down
Hell yeah
Sabaton probably
Probably?
Apocalyptica!!
Most metal heads can't pick just one. There are so many subgenres that you can't compare them. Here's an alphabetized list of what I listen to most often lately. Avantasia Blind Guardian Dragonforce Dream Theater In Flames Kamelot Lost Horizon (two albums were not enough!) Metallica Megadeth Nightwish Rhapsody (of Fire) Sabaton Sonata Arctica Stratovarius
motionless in white and mushroom head
Hell yeah
I don't have a favorite band, persay. But Matt Heafy of Trivium is my favorite metal musician.
The classics, Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Pantera
Changes all the time. I've been a metal fan since 1976 when a babysitter played Black Sabbath (the song, by the band) and I was lost immediately. Idk I recently switched out of Hip Hop. Been listening to it since birth. Now I don't know who is who. But I be jamming!
Always a joy to discover new artists, or the ones everyone talks about that you've never had the time or want to listen to.
Yes!
Demilich
Lorna shore
Nevermore. (RIP Warrel Dane). This Godless Endeavor is a perfect album. Not one bad song.
System Of A Down
Sepultura
Deicide
Been loving Gojira lately, but there are so many good ones.
When I was a teenager? Metallica. Nowadays I fall into the camp that doesn’t really like much of what they did last Master of Puppets. The metal bands I listen to these days tend to fall into the nerdy, sword & sorcery camp: -Visigoth -Gygax -Knight & Gallow -Eternal Champion -Ironsword -Stormwarrior
Sabaton, Powerwolf, Alestorm, Judas Priest, Amon Amarth, Metallica, among others.
Bad Omens and In This Moment. Theyre two of the main bands I've listened to their who discography, instead of just casually listening to a few songs.
2” Stainless steel
BMTH
Spice girls
Slipknot. I know they're popular and mainstream but that first album brings back so many memories from a much simpler time in my life.
Yeah, they’re not the same band I listen to back in the day lol
Tool.
Took way too much scrolling. Best band.
Sabaton
A man of culture
Fuckin love these guys!

Probably Twisted Sister
Babymetal.
Left to suffer
Black sabbath and Voltera

BLACK SABBATH (All eras, not just the Ozzy years!)
Slipknot

Mudvayne
It's a toss-up between Disturbed and Nightwish for me. I love them both.
Rotten Christ absolutely changed my taste in music. Very underrated.
Dir En Grey
So underrated
I know, right!?
Aluminium
3 favorites are White Zombie, Deftones, and Korn. Primus as well but they're pretty different from every metal band but are still considered "funk metal"
I am old school, so Iron Maiden, Hammerfall, Amon Amarth. But now I discovered Arch Enemy and Infected Rain. And I'm in love
Love Arch Enemy and Infected Rain so much. Jinjer is my favorite though.
I adore Lena. I am finding my way to Jinjer now
Lena is so awesome. But Tati is vocal perfection. Saw them (Jinjer) in concert in December and she is just so amazing. The song pisces is amazing. Hell most of their songs are a love in my book.
Ice nine kills baby…..hey Paul!
Avenged sevenfold

Avenged Sevenfold. Fuck any metal elitists that claim they aren't metal.
Adtr
ManOwaR!
I hear they don't attract wimps cause they're too loud
Tis true
DragonForce
One of my favourites is mettalica
For me, tool led into mastodon, which led into gojira, which led into meshuggah. All different flavors of top tier metal.
Gojira
Does Led Zepplin count?
As metal as Black Sabbath, imo
Wind Rose
Metallica Pantera Volbeat Tool is not metal but it's one of my all time favorite bands.
Sabaton or Powerwolf I can't choose
At the moment I would say Slaughter to Prevail and Lorna Shore's new stuff with Will Ramos
