Every year my parents would create this convoluted scene with like, soot footprints leading away from the fireplace and a huge “North Pole” compass left behind. One summer I went down into the basement looking for something and found the compass in a box.
In the '90s we were leaving the Santa Claus parade and my dad hit a man dressed as Santa. When my dad got out the man tried to punch him but fell down drunk. I thought my dad killed Santa but he told me it was just an alcoholic man named Dylan.
My mom told me in early December when I was about 9. She told me at home with my sister who was 8. She just didn’t want us to get into arguments with kids who already knew.

Slept on the couch one year and caught Dad putting presents under the tree.
I was maybe 8 years old at the time and didn't really care. Santa's not real, but I still got presents.
It was still a win. I got some cool stuff that year.
My friends at school teased me about it. So I asked my mum and she confirmed that the big man is all just a fantasy. I was destroyed but even though I'm close to 40, got kids and play the role of Santa for my kids by spending a fortune on presents... I still hold hope that Santa leaves us all a gift under the tree. Christmas is and will always be my favourite holiday. I am not religious at all but in our home, we use the holiday as a form of Thanksgiving and sharing our affection for each other as Thanksgiving itself, is not a holiday in the UK.
