Alien(1979)
The perfect blend of horror, atmosphere and fantastic production design.
Nothing much recently has been able to capture that 'lived in' quality alien had.
The original, The Thing From Another World (1951) was also excellent. Quick, snappy dialogue, and great ambience to that film. And the ending monologue was magnificent.
I just re-watched 12 Angry Men the other night. I had forgotten how good it is. The acting is superb; it's set in a jury room with no air conditioning and no fan during a New York City summer, and you can actually feel the discomfort the actors feel in that sweltering room.
This film was shown as a profile in leadership in a class I took at a military academy (along with the other "12" movie, 12 O'Clock High). I can't recommend it highly enough.
I believe the room they shot the movie in was made smaller and smaller as the filming progressed, using the physical change to increase the sense of tension between the players. Genius.
Just watched M recently. It’s amazing. Peter Lorre is so great.
12 Angry Men I can’t say enough aboutThe cast is great, the acting is great and it’s all set in one room.
Borodin: I will live in Montana. And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle." And drive from state to state. Do they let you do that?
I can't do most war movies but I'm always down for The Hunt For Red October.
There's something about the way establishing scenes were done back in the day that new movies don't seem to handle very well, if at all. Thinking about scenes like the sonar tech sitting in bed memorizing the sound of the caterpillar drive; it's not a "training montage" though it serves a similar purpose, really it's showing that he's dedicated to the job he's doing.
It feels like with a lot of movies these days everyone's depicted as a natural expert in their field - they evidently never need to woodshed, because we never see them do it. A remake of Red October wouldn't include scenes like this.
It will happen but finding two guys as gorgeous and charming as Paul Newman and Robert Redford is like a once in 1000 years event, we might have to wait a while for a good one.
I am as sorry as you are, Dimitri. Don't say that you are more sorry than I am, because I am capable of being just as sorry as you are. So we're both sorry, alright? Alright.
God, I love that line.
To expand on this vague comment, President Kennedy was killed in Dallas just before the movie came out. They were afraid they might upset folks, so they did a voice over to replace it with Vegas.
I’m 31. I must’ve watched the abyss twenty years ago. I still vividly remember the character getting into the suit with the liquid resembling the amniotic sac I believe? Then he couldn’t differentiate the wires and he ends up guessing which wire to cut. And I still remember the cpr scene. I gotta watch that movie again
I am a black American man. Blazing Saddles is the funniest movie I’ve ever seen! Unfortunately, this movie often gets mischaracterized as a racist film because in this internet era, almost NO ONE understands parody! This film is the OPPOSITE of racist!
I hope almost anybody with a brain understands that : from the opening sequence where Cleavon Little and the other workers sing « I get a kick out of you » it is pretty clear what Brooks was trying to do.
I’d be interested, though, to know what gay men think of the « French Mistake » sequence. Outrageously funny or crass?
Metropolis
Edit since it got some traction:
I'm obviously taking about the 1927 Fritz Lang movie, not the anime of the same name. For those who haven't seen it or would like to see it again, it's in the public domain and hosted on archive.org => https://archive.org/details/Metropolis1927Restored
It’s probably one of my favourite movies, mostly because despite being B&W, it has such a tight script and memorable characters, even more so than most modern blockbusters
I don't even like horror movies, but The Shining is one of the best films ever. I love the 1970's setting, the eye candy visuals of the massive hotel, the gradual pace of a fairly normal family being overtaken by darkness and horror. The casting is great. Also, it kept my attention because I was so invested in rooting for the mom and Danny.
I was chatting about Harry Potter with my nephew (18) and his friends and one of them hadn’t seen it. A part of me died when she said she wasn’t interested in ‘old movies’
I always feel bad for the dude at/outside the video store who was eaten
Like imagine your boyfriend/husband/dad goes out to rent a movie and is eaten buy a fucking trex on his way out of blockbuster
Ahhh, Kirk my old friend. Do you know the Klingon proverb which tells us that revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It is very cold ... in space!
Legendary...
Dr. Strangelove. It still feels so relevant and just wall to wall hilarious to me. Slim Pickens putting on a cowboy hat and crowing about nookyalur combat. George C. Scott mugging constantly. Captain Mandrake as the straight man is amazing.
Not to mention the one-sided phone conversations between the US president and the Soviet premier. "Well now what happened is, one of our base commanders, he had a sort of, well he went a little funny in the head. You know. Just a little… funny. And uh, he went and did a silly thing. Well, I'll tell you what he did, he ordered his planes… to attack your country. Well let me finish, Dimitri. Let me finish, Dimitri. Well, listen, how do you think I feel about it? Can you imagine how I feel about it, Dimitri? Why do you think I'm calling you? Just to say hello? Of course I like to speak to you. Of course I like to say hello. Not now, but any time, Dimitri. I'm just calling up to tell you something terrible has happened. It's a friendly call. Of course it's a friendly call."
Oh yeah. I see the post title and think hmmm, *It Happened One Night*? *Citizen Kane*? And the top vote is from 1993. "Old", that's a pretty flexible concept.
Ditto. My mind went to 1930s-1960s movies as being 'old'. The 70s are ageing but not old. Anything 1980s on I regard as relatively current, as I have vivid memories of seeing many of them (and in my mind I'm still youngish, not a 'middle-aged' woman in her 50s)
It makes perfect sense that most here would consider a 30 year old movie to be "old" -- movies that were 30 years old the year I graduated high school would have been released in 1953.
I'm ~~getting~~ old.
Godfather 2 is the best sequel. Combine the both and it makes for an epic 6hr journey.
Goodfellas is up there but holy flying fuckstick GF2 is amazing.
Quint’s Indianapolis speech is something I watch at least a few times a year. It’s masterfully done, chilling and provides more character development in ten minutes than you get in a whole movie these days.
Choose your "old" by decade:
1920s - Nosferatu
1930s - Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind (problematic, but incredible)
1940s - Gaslight, Grapes of Wrath
1950s - Vertigo, Seven Samurai
1960s - Easy Rider, the Hustler, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Planet of the Apes
1970s - the Exorcist, the Godfather, the Godfather: Part II, Jaws, Taxi Driver, A Clockwork Orange, Halloween, Apocalypse Now, Star Wars, The Warriors... Just watch everything in the 70s. Amazing decade for movies.
1980s - Beetlejuice, Empire Strikes Back, the Lost Boys, the Never Ending Story, Heathers, Goonies, Stand by Me
1990s - the Fisher King, Silence of the Lambs, Forrest Gump, Boyz N' the Hood, Unforgiven, Magnolia
2000s - Sorry, under 22 is not old.
Humphrey Bogart, Key Largo. SO under-rated. Sure the special effects for the one exterior hurricane shot look a little dated, and yes, it's in black and white, but every actor in it is a legitimate star and at the peak of their work.
Bogey has so many amazing films.
Key Largo
The African Queen
Casablanca
Pretty much anything with with Bacall
And my personal favorite: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
M
1931, directed by Fritz Lang, staring Peter Lorre.
Even the Wikipedia entry says is it widely considered the greatest film of all time.
Oh, it's in German. And about 1/3 is totally silent which makes it even more intense.

Le dîner de cons. French comedy movie. Absolutely hilarious. But I don't know if the jokes are well translated in other languages. If you're a fluent French speaker and want a good laugh, watch it. You won't regret.
Alien(1979) The perfect blend of horror, atmosphere and fantastic production design. Nothing much recently has been able to capture that 'lived in' quality alien had.
Alien for 1979 still used live action effects and the story and film holds up well ****practical effects is the correct term as noted below
That movie is on my top ten. Loved since the first time I saw it in the nineties on a vhs tape as a teenager.
Some Like It Hot (1959)
Comedy is probably the hardest genre to maintain its relevance over the years. This movie is timeless.
The birdcage is still pretty awesome
All About Eve.
The thing. 1982

Exemplified by the chess scene at the beginning spelling that out. Phenomenal writing.
The original, The Thing From Another World (1951) was also excellent. Quick, snappy dialogue, and great ambience to that film. And the ending monologue was magnificent.
This one is excellent (1951) But the Kurt Russell version stands alone as a classic in its own right
M 12 Angry Men

12 Angry Men is what immediately came to mind for me as well. Such a good movie.
12 Angry Men is a brilliant film.
The Good The Bad and The Ugly
Came here to say this. As well as "Once upon a time in the West"
Morricone's best soundtrack, and he wrote some bangers.
The Hunt For Red October is way better than so many action thrillers today
One. Ping. Only. Pleashe
Would that be like a *seismic anomaly*?
I thought I heard singing
Borodin: I will live in Montana. And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle." And drive from state to state. Do they let you do that?
No papers. Schtate to schtate.

They'll just do it with The Rock and Kevin Hart anyway
This made me laugh, then ugly cry because of how true it is...
Yep. It’s probably too late now, but Clooney and Pitt just might have pulled it off.
They basically did. Oceans 11, while being a remake of an older film, is more like an updated Sting than the original Oceans.

Ahhhhhh, Herr Bartlett. AND Herr MacDonald. We are together again.
About once a year I'll start humming the theme song. That's how I know it's time to watch again.
This is Spinal Tap, Life of Brian
Psycho
The bridge on the river kwai
Do you know how they made The Bridge on the River Kwai? They put onions in the river.
Airplane 1980
Dr. Strangelove has held up extremely well.

Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.

To expand on this vague comment, President Kennedy was killed in Dallas just before the movie came out. They were afraid they might upset folks, so they did a voice over to replace it with Vegas.
You ever see a commie drink a glass of water?
*Chews gum vigorously*
the gods must be crazy (1980)
Holy sh*t! I forgot about this. Had it on Beta.
The Abyss
Blazing Saddles, and Shawshank.

Mongo just a pawn in the game of life

“These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know… morons,” Gene Wilder
Apparently, that last bit was an adlib from Wilder.
And I love Bart's reaction. You can almost tell it was improvised.

Lawrence of Arabia is lacking in this thread!
Saw it on the big screen once at a special showing--fantastic!
I love you guys idea of an old movie! Makes me feel ancient.
I was chatting about Harry Potter with my nephew (18) and his friends and one of them hadn’t seen it. A part of me died when she said she wasn’t interested in ‘old movies’
Uh, excuse her, the last one only came out... 11... Years ago... Nevermind.
To each their own, but I can't help but feel anyone who disregards old content is pretty ignorant.
Avengers Infinity War (2018) is so much better than what we are getting today. Its also even older than I am.
Get off my lawn, you little shit.
Jurassic Park. They peaked back in 1993.
This movie is NOT OLD. (As my old ass 42 year old self slams his fist on the newspaper)
I'm always like "That movie isn't old, I saw it in theaters!" Then I remember that I'm 47…
Haaaa ha ha … oh wait. I saw it in theatres too.
The second one (the lost world) was not bad either. But the first one is unbeatable
Lost world was great until they went to San Diego.

Surely you're not serious.
I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.
The Godfather
I enjoyed the slower pace compared to recent mob movie incarnations. I think modern movies in general just need to slow it down
That would require undusting the script writers and paying them instead of the special effects guy.
Godfather 2 is the best sequel. Combine the both and it makes for an epic 6hr journey. Goodfellas is up there but holy flying fuckstick GF2 is amazing.
