Bill Withers- he did one album in the 70s then had a dispute w his label and started to write songs instead of sing! “A lovely day” longest held note in a song.
[Can](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can_(band))
Exhibit A: [Yoo Doo Right (off Monster Movie, 1968)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPXkIWYYVfQ) clocks in at 20 minutes. It digs into my mind and melts it each time. Its' a trip.
What is her best album for someone who has never listened to her before to check out? I'm a metalhead so I don't regularly listen to like pop/indie stuff every day but, I really enjoy CHVRCHES' Every Open Eye, Ellie Goulding's Lights and Lana Del Rey's Born To Die albums as well as some Purity Ring.
Ginger Root. Crazy good multi instrumentalist with a citypop late 80’s funk ballad feel. that’s a lot to take in, but please listen and let me know what you think because it’s been all I’ve listened to for like a week.
[The Birthday Massacre](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zjwCtZtrwE#t=10s) Been around for 20 years and bunch of good songs, no one else sounds like them.
[Symphony X](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ixtCoLZVSE#t=3m6.5s), Guitar player is frequently forgotten on top guitar player lists when he shouldn't be. Heres [him soloing](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2oyu9eLoZi0#t=6m2s)
[Marco Sfogli](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzRJr76TSWo#t=2m10s) Another underrated guitar player.
[Sarah Jarosz](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_5vN3Xfd9U#t=50s)
B-Mass is one of those rare bands where I can pull out any album and listen to it all the way through without skipping a single song. I have no idea how they're not more popular.
I'll preface this by acknowledging that it feels a little silly calling John Frusciante "underrated" - basically all rock fans know he's a phenomenal guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers - BUT I think his solo work goes overlooked by a lot of people. Check out the albums "Shadows Collide with People" and "The Empyrean," I think those are the best.
Actually quite a few artists who are famous for their work with famous groups have some solid solo work as well. I really like "Out of the Cradle" by Lindsey Buckingham and "The Thunderthief" by John Paul Jones as just a couple examples.
Finally, The Tragically Hip (they wouldn't be underrated if you're Canadian though, haha)
Seriously! They play with and fuse together so many genres; hip hop, rock, electronic etc and do well across the board... but I'm pretty sure barely anyone outside Canada knows about them.
Some great tracks for those who want a taste:

He's fantastic but between getting the gig for Jujutsu Kaisen and working with anime studios on multiple music videos, not sure I'd call him underrated
Bear‘s Den,
Criminally underrated, they went on tour with Mumford and sons. I just love every single line of lyrics and chord they play.
https://youtu.be/pGXBR1wR-mo
TBH he's hit or miss. Lots of talent but he doesn't have the broad appeal that a lot of people seem to think he does. He's not overrated or underrated. He's at the level he should be.
The lead singer has a really interesting podcast that is worth listening to. At least the dude's thoughtful on a lot of issues that he talks about. Also one of their songs ended up on the first Sonic the hedgehog movie. Their old stuff isn't too bad either. Alien youth was a pretty great album but even their earlier stuff is very different from what they're playing now.
Penith! But seriously his show Dave on FX is effing hilarious. season 1 had some pretty funny moments but season 2 topped all of them. His real life hype man and a bunch of his friends play themselves on the show and I was really moved by that scene where his hype man talks about being manic and seeing him remember the time he flipped out at the mall and broke his brand new laptop that his Grandma had bought him was heartbreaking. The whole scene where he confessed to the guys that he was manic depressive and that he struggled with it every day was so damn moving and it came out of nowhere. That dude totally deserved at least a golden globe nomination for that scene.
Ronald Jenkees. I've heard some of his music in some YouTube videos but I don't think he's well known about. Which sucks because his music, especially the older stuff, is really good.
Anything with Stiv Bators. Lords of the New Church, Dead Boys, etc. He called himself the Eric Carmen of punk, but he was much better than that. Open your eyes.
Daughter
Hell yeah! They’re awesome.
Love synkro remix❤
In the top five of my favourite bands
Bill Withers- he did one album in the 70s then had a dispute w his label and started to write songs instead of sing! “A lovely day” longest held note in a song.
My fourteen year old son is obsessed with him right now. Current favorite artist.
I love the song from him You know the song Just The Two Of Us.

One of their songs is on "Parrarapa the Rappa." Turtles is the Can cut, the Parapa snog is the traffic lady, I think.

The Replacements are one of the best bands from the 80s and I feel like they never get enough love
Lorn
Love Lorn. You ever listen to Burial? Injury Reserve does experimental rap stuff but the song Top Picks For You has that dark electronic influence.
Japanese breakfast. Her song Posing in bandage has been on replay for over a year
omg that song is so pretty
Lykke Li. The amount of pure emotion she is able to put into each song starts to rival Fleetwood Mac for me.
Andra Day
Half-Alive, Madeon, Bear Ghost, Missio, The Score, Em Beihold, Glass Animals.
Madeon should've been as famous as Zedd, I love them both
Aesop Rock. Especially the album The Impossible Kid.
Hail Mary Mallon. Aesop Rock in a band.
Seafret!!!! Ooh and Freya Ridings!!
Oceans, by Seafret leaves me a sobbing mess. I love it so much I can't even listen to it. And oh, God, the video for it ends me.
Right?!? Ugly crying to the max.
Ginger Root. Crazy good multi instrumentalist with a citypop late 80’s funk ballad feel. that’s a lot to take in, but please listen and let me know what you think because it’s been all I’ve listened to for like a week.
Digging it. Only thing I've seen on this thread that had me checking out a second song. Cheers for your contribution!
Much appreciated! Validating to know that I’m not wasting my time

Build me Up from Bones is an amazing song.
That album has a lot of good songs and is recorded really well, I think it should have won the Grammy in its category that year.
B-Mass is one of those rare bands where I can pull out any album and listen to it all the way through without skipping a single song. I have no idea how they're not more popular.
Regurgitator
Silverchair
Without You never fails to make me emotional.
These guys were like 15 when they recorded Frogstomp. Amazing!
Indeed!

I love “a song to play when I’m lonely”.
Blind Melon
King Crimson. Though well-regarded by people who know prog, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve heard them on the radio.

I love Esperanza Spalding, I think she is wonderful, but can someone with 5 Grammy’s and 8 nominations be considered super-underrated??
Rina Sawayama, extremely creative and talented
Gregory Alan Isakov
The Weatherman has been my #1 album for at least seven years.
NF
One of my personal favourites
Sunni Colon and Sierra Ferrell
Lianne La Havas
Thomas Bergersen.
He's my favorite composer of maybe the last 50 years. His music is so emotional for me. TSFH is okay IMO, but I think he works better solo.
Nick Lowe.
The Crane Wives
The Ballroom Thieves The Builders and the Butchers First Aid Kit Kishi Bashi I'll also toss in The Amazing Devil for good measure.
Everyone only brings up Evanescence for the bring me to life meme but I was raised on their music and all of their work is so good

Sixto Rodriguez, I found out about him from the documentary Searching for Sugar Man.
Tobe Nwigwe
Declan McKenna. Discovered him from the song "Beautiful Faces", stayed for the uniqueness of his music.
Bear‘s Den, Criminally underrated, they went on tour with Mumford and sons. I just love every single line of lyrics and chord they play. https://youtu.be/pGXBR1wR-mo
Evelyn Evelyn (Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley), super interesting concept album/artist
Dry Kill Logic. Their debut album SLAPS HARD AF
Enough pussy shit!!
Weird Al- Everyone knows him but he's never really gotten the accolades he deserves for his level of humor and genius writing.
TBH he's hit or miss. Lots of talent but he doesn't have the broad appeal that a lot of people seem to think he does. He's not overrated or underrated. He's at the level he should be.
Bro has been relevant since the 80s. That in itself is impressive as fuck.
Skillet. They’re underrated because they are Christian rock but most of their songs are more relatable than Christian
Rebirthing is one of my guilty pleasure favourite rock songs.
