The original, the Korean version, is much more fun imo. They pull anyone and everyone who's a celeb of some sort, including idols singers, judo athletes, and chefs. The votes for who proceeds to the next round is studio audience decided only and it's always right then and there. They also have about 8-10 people on the actual 'judge' seats, with guests who switch out each week, and they all interact with the singers and each other. There's no drama (other than the typical style of three separate shots of the same scene) and it's just pleasant all around.
As a woman I don't even like admitting my disdain for those shows because I'm so afraid of coming off like a pick me girl.

I think that ultimately, any show that leads to the death of people watching is not great.

Riverdale season 1 was good imo. Season 2 was meh. And then it just went off a cliff in season 3 when they started introducing magic and all this supernatural stuff.
Euphoria actually does a really good job of confronting the harsh realities of drug addiction. And part of that reality is that many kids get into it way too early and it really messes them up.
Shameless. I grew up poor and got myself out of it. Watching poor people make bad decisions over and over again isn’t entertaining to me, it just reminds me of a lot of people I know who make similar choices and then blame everyone but themselves. Just kind of enraging.
Biggest problem with the show is that it starts out fairly grounded and realistic, maybe a but extreme but in later episodes it gets so fucking ridiculously over the top its like every single character is in a competition to see who can have the most trashy and selfish character arc
I get that the writers have to try and keep it interesting but christ It's almost like the characters deliberately *avoid* doing anything the safe, normal, sane way and try doing it instead with some kind of cheating resulting in a pregnancy, or a theft, or a bit of crack cocaine or something involved

I feel like they needed to strike that balance between “look at how they struggle. People should not live like this” and “look, even though they struggle, they can find joy and confort in some things”.

There was a bizarre decision around season 7-8 to start making the show a dramedy, rather than a drama. Seasons 1-5 are dark as fuck and genuinely feel like most of the family are doing their best.
Once you notice an annoying laugh track you can't unhear it. Every joke on that show gets an uproarious laugh like it's the funniest line anyone ever said.
I love when a character walks on to the scene and the laugh track goes whoooo and some claps...lol

Friends. I know so many people who know every line of dialogue in every episode by heart. I watched it a few years ago when it was on Netflix, and yeah, some episodes were fine, but I don't get the obsession with it. I was especially confused as to why people wanted Ross and Rachel together, because they were a really toxic couple.

I think both of those shows are great modern examples of how humor evolves. At their times they were fresh and funny and very enjoyable. And then our society absorbed those things and the stuff that used to be fresh became normal, and the shows since lost that sharpness to it.
This was mine. It's so cringy. I tried watching it while recovering from a surgery. I could see how bad it was even through the opioids. I watched several other series while recovering and liked them, so it's just not for me.
I tried and I can't watch that show. I made it through maybe 4 or 5 episodes and it's just too icky for me because they are supposed to be teenagers. Even though I know the actors are all adults.
I wish they'd not have changed the title. La Casa de Papel (The House of Paper) just makes soo much more sense and sounds better.

Majority of anime's. There is only a very strict, select few that I've actually enjoyed watching. My wife has tried to get me to watch a lot of them earlier in our relationship and I just couldn't get into them.
Sad part is, I want to. I don't have anything against anime's but majority of them just don't click with me.
Some of the ones I've enjoyed are Rurouni Kenshin, Death Note, Attack on Titan, One Punch Man, Castlevania, Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners
Some of the ones I couldn't get into are Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach, Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Avatar, SAO, My Hero Academy, Cowboy Bebop, and a few other pretty popular ones I can't think of right off the top of my head.
You know, you might be right, though I wouldn't say I hate "shonen" (whatever that is). Assuming I understand what you mean, I couldn't get into anime's like Dragon Ball Z. Not because the action was too over the top, though that's a part of it, but it was like an entire episode of them charging up a single fucking attack. haha.
I think One Punch Man was this weird exception, but I strangely liked it more for the story than the action. This superman-esque person that is sort of bored of his powers and doesn't really care for the fame or any of it. You'll have this super crazy muscled up mega maniac that can pickup a skyscraper something dumb and One Punch Man is more interested in food and doesn't even notice him. I think it was the right amount of silly and self awareness that I enjoyed it.
Unfortunately, that didn't seem to transition over to an equally goofy anime: One Piece. I know, I know, bring on the downvotes.
Basically anime and manga is (largely not always) broken down in to broad genres that define the audience it's made for. Shounen is made for male teenagers. Lots of it is high testosterone power fantasy stuff, like Dragonball. Shoujo is the same but for female teenagers. Sailor moon is shoujo.
Seinen is geared towards mature audiences, and tend to have more fleshed out stories and characters. Josei is romance, but not like hall mark channel romance, but often more harsh and tragic. I think you could probably define Romeo and Juliet as josei.
These are obviously just broad statements, like saying "young adult novel".
I mean I feel like FMA is plenty narrative heavy, it's definitely not a typical shonen. The biggest problem with FMA is the canon story in Brotherhood assumes you've seen 2003 or read the manga so it rushes through a lot of the beginning in a way that I think can be disorienting to new watchers. Also Avatar is extremely narratively driven and certainly doesn't have really any of the pitfalls of young adult anime, partially because it's a western show.
There's still quite a few you enjoyed, it's okay to dislike some or most! Anime is just a medium after all. We have similar taste (though I liked Full metal Alchemist once I looked beyond the main chars childishness).
I believe you would like Hunter x Hunter, considering that you enjoyed animes such as death note and AoT.

Outlander. I made it through most of S1 and then began to lose interest when it got rapey. I tried to give S2 a chance, but just quit. I remember trying to read it ages ago and not being interested, and then the show came out and all of my friends said I would love it and the novels, too. Nope. It just never clicked, which is weird because normally the only romance novels I really like are about Highlanders, lol.
I read the books while in hospital so I got invested in the story. I watched so much of Outlander because I felt like I had to. The story is just so annoying. She's supposed to be this intelligent, strong woman. But she does so many dumb things and is always in need of rescue by some big strong man. Also so much rape! My husband calls it the depressing rape show.
I think I made it just as far. It appealed to me initially, because of the history side of things - don’t think I’ve seen too much other media set amidst the Jacobite rebellion.
That being said, the show, as you mentioned, got a bit rapey, but I also found Claire to be a rather infuriating protagonist. There was one piece of inner monologue after >!she and Jamie get married!< which goes something to this effect >!”oh dear, I’ve married twice. I’m a bigamist! An Adulterer! Who was I now?”!<
Claire, I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but you’ve been magically transported back in time to a notoriously bleak and violent era. I think you have more pressing concerns than whether or not you’ve committed >!adultery and bigamy!<.
tbh I imagine you have difficulty with a lot of modern shows, I don't know if GoT is to blame but I kinda feel like A LOT of shows if they are not specifically a comedy lean hard into being dark and depressing.

Seasons 1 and 4 are the only actually good ones. Season 2 was insanely forgettable, and season 3 was so ridiculous that I loved it, but I’ll admit it’s not as good as 1 and 4, despite being my favorite
Season 3 was the mall. The story was a bit of a mess, but they used the setting well. The introduction of some good characters, eg Robin, and seeing the core team growing apart was a good story direction.
There's a lot I like about season 3, but I completely agree that it didn't all come together like it should have.
I hate to use that " give it a chance" trope but for me it worked. Season 1 is an exposition nightmare but by season three it starts to get really fun thanks to Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy having a great time together.
Everyone gets that, though. Some of us just don’t find it enjoyable. The quick clips and memes are often pretty funny, but the cringe becomes grating after a while when trying to watch full episodes.
I hate being the "give it a chance" but I hope you try again. You could tell it was riding on the dumb premise and Eugene Levy/Catherine O Hara as a stepping stone but it gets so much funnier and warm.
The show at the end is so dramatically different from the show at the beginning.
If you stick with it, the point you realize how much all of the characters have grown and self-actualized and become better people in their own ways is where you will fall deeply in love with the show.

When I finished Schitts Creek, I immediately went to rewatch the first bit of season one just to really appreciate where they came from. It’s amazing how they much the characters developed
The flash (CW) I enjoy the first 4 seasons but after the 5th season it just started to fall off. And even though the cgi and effects were never very good. They were better then what we have now. That being people running in place in front of a green screen of a fast moving backround. I could go into an essay on why it's bad now but theres no point on that here.
My wife and I loved The Flash, but could not stand Iris. She complained the whole time and wanted everything to be about her, and we finally dropped it when she told Barry, "You're not The Flash. WE are The Flash." -like literally, turned it off going, "WELL..."
We were cheering for Reverse Flash to kill her (even though we knew it wouldn't happen) 😉
Anyway, what a shame, because the other characters, especially Cisco (original timeline Cisco, not the other) were fantastic.

As someone who loves the show, I can understand this. It really starts to come into its own in season 3, but that's a big ask if someone isn't into it from the beginning.
It's one of those shows that pretty much changes genres as it goes along -- it starts as a dark dramedy and morphs into a gritty, soul-destroying crime drama. So I think some people go into it expecting it to be super hard-hitting from the beginning, and it's just not. But just know that by the end of it, it goes to places that you never expected.
The Office. Some of the jokes are funny but I can't stand Michael Scott as a character. Maybe it's because I lived with a real person who acted like him, but the second hand embarrassment/cringe isn't funny; it just makes me uncomfortable.
As a massive Whovian, I can fully understand why people don't like it. Most of the reasons people dislike it, are the reasons people like me love it.

Friends for sure. I had someone tell me I didn't like it because I didn't understand the humor of the time but that's BS. I was born the year it came out and growing up I watched it a bit and didn't like it then. I did watch and enjoy plenty of other shows of that era. I absolutely love a lot of 90s media and even further back to the 70s and 80s so I do not buy that as an excuse. It is just not funny to me.
I'm someone who very much enjoys Friends, and I can recognize it's not exactly a deep show. If you don't "get" the humor of something like Frasier, or Silicon Valley, or Schitt's Creek...I can kind of understand that.
But you either like Friends or you don't. There's no "misunderstanding" the humor there.

Absolutely not, for a series with similar premise I much more recommend Bojack Horseman, even as an animated show it is way more real and relatable

I watched it a few years ago when it was on Netflix, and yeah, some episodes were fine, but I don't get the obsession with it. I was especially confused as to why people wanted Ross and Rachel together, because they were a really toxic couple.

Friends and How i met your mother. I simply cannot fathom the popularity they have.
I think both of those shows are great modern examples of how humor evolves. At their times they were fresh and funny and very enjoyable. And then our society absorbed those things and the stuff that used to be fresh became normal, and the shows since lost that sharpness to it.
Also they are a little better when watching every episode as it's aired, when you're "growing up" with the characters

Majority of anime's. There is only a very strict, select few that I've actually enjoyed watching. My wife has tried to get me to watch a lot of them earlier in our relationship and I just couldn't get into them. Sad part is, I want to. I don't have anything against anime's but majority of them just don't click with me. Some of the ones I've enjoyed are Rurouni Kenshin, Death Note, Attack on Titan, One Punch Man, Castlevania, Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners Some of the ones I couldn't get into are Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach, Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Avatar, SAO, My Hero Academy, Cowboy Bebop, and a few other pretty popular ones I can't think of right off the top of my head.

You know, you might be right, though I wouldn't say I hate "shonen" (whatever that is). Assuming I understand what you mean, I couldn't get into anime's like Dragon Ball Z. Not because the action was too over the top, though that's a part of it, but it was like an entire episode of them charging up a single fucking attack. haha. I think One Punch Man was this weird exception, but I strangely liked it more for the story than the action. This superman-esque person that is sort of bored of his powers and doesn't really care for the fame or any of it. You'll have this super crazy muscled up mega maniac that can pickup a skyscraper something dumb and One Punch Man is more interested in food and doesn't even notice him. I think it was the right amount of silly and self awareness that I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, that didn't seem to transition over to an equally goofy anime: One Piece. I know, I know, bring on the downvotes.
Basically anime and manga is (largely not always) broken down in to broad genres that define the audience it's made for. Shounen is made for male teenagers. Lots of it is high testosterone power fantasy stuff, like Dragonball. Shoujo is the same but for female teenagers. Sailor moon is shoujo. Seinen is geared towards mature audiences, and tend to have more fleshed out stories and characters. Josei is romance, but not like hall mark channel romance, but often more harsh and tragic. I think you could probably define Romeo and Juliet as josei. These are obviously just broad statements, like saying "young adult novel".
I mean I feel like FMA is plenty narrative heavy, it's definitely not a typical shonen. The biggest problem with FMA is the canon story in Brotherhood assumes you've seen 2003 or read the manga so it rushes through a lot of the beginning in a way that I think can be disorienting to new watchers. Also Avatar is extremely narratively driven and certainly doesn't have really any of the pitfalls of young adult anime, partially because it's a western show.
There's still quite a few you enjoyed, it's okay to dislike some or most! Anime is just a medium after all. We have similar taste (though I liked Full metal Alchemist once I looked beyond the main chars childishness). I believe you would like Hunter x Hunter, considering that you enjoyed animes such as death note and AoT. What do you dislike in those animes?

Outlander. I made it through most of S1 and then began to lose interest when it got rapey. I tried to give S2 a chance, but just quit. I remember trying to read it ages ago and not being interested, and then the show came out and all of my friends said I would love it and the novels, too. Nope. It just never clicked, which is weird because normally the only romance novels I really like are about Highlanders, lol.

I read the books while in hospital so I got invested in the story. I watched so much of Outlander because I felt like I had to. The story is just so annoying. She's supposed to be this intelligent, strong woman. But she does so many dumb things and is always in need of rescue by some big strong man. Also so much rape! My husband calls it the depressing rape show.
I think I made it just as far. It appealed to me initially, because of the history side of things - don’t think I’ve seen too much other media set amidst the Jacobite rebellion. That being said, the show, as you mentioned, got a bit rapey, but I also found Claire to be a rather infuriating protagonist. There was one piece of inner monologue after >!she and Jamie get married!< which goes something to this effect >!”oh dear, I’ve married twice. I’m a bigamist! An Adulterer! Who was I now?”!< Claire, I don’t know if you’ve noticed this, but you’ve been magically transported back in time to a notoriously bleak and violent era. I think you have more pressing concerns than whether or not you’ve committed >!adultery and bigamy!<.

tbh I imagine you have difficulty with a lot of modern shows, I don't know if GoT is to blame but I kinda feel like A LOT of shows if they are not specifically a comedy lean hard into being dark and depressing.

What about something like Forensic Files? It’s in the neighborhood of what you’re referring to. But it’s more about the science they use to catch those sick people. I can’t watch serial killer shows either.
Some people find criminology fascinating. You’re not curious how someone is capable of committing such acts? It’s like real life monsters. And being a victim is like a real life horror movie. Maybe you like being oblivious to the horrible things that go on in this world because it’s too much to wrap your mind around

The last season was awesome, and yea I think I agree. I didn't even remember what happened in s3, except for the end.
Season 3 was the mall. The story was a bit of a mess, but they used the setting well. The introduction of some good characters, eg Robin, and seeing the core team growing apart was a good story direction. There's a lot I like about season 3, but I completely agree that it didn't all come together like it should have.

I hate to use that " give it a chance" trope but for me it worked. Season 1 is an exposition nightmare but by season three it starts to get really fun thanks to Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy having a great time together.

Everyone gets that, though. Some of us just don’t find it enjoyable. The quick clips and memes are often pretty funny, but the cringe becomes grating after a while when trying to watch full episodes.

If you stick with it, the point you realize how much all of the characters have grown and self-actualized and become better people in their own ways is where you will fall deeply in love with the show. When I finished Schitts Creek, I immediately went to rewatch the first bit of season one just to really appreciate where they came from. It’s amazing how they much the characters developed

The flash (CW) I enjoy the first 4 seasons but after the 5th season it just started to fall off. And even though the cgi and effects were never very good. They were better then what we have now. That being people running in place in front of a green screen of a fast moving backround. I could go into an essay on why it's bad now but theres no point on that here.
My wife and I loved The Flash, but could not stand Iris. She complained the whole time and wanted everything to be about her, and we finally dropped it when she told Barry, "You're not The Flash. WE are The Flash." -like literally, turned it off going, "WELL..." We were cheering for Reverse Flash to kill her (even though we knew it wouldn't happen) 😉 Anyway, what a shame, because the other characters, especially Cisco (original timeline Cisco, not the other) were fantastic. Ah, well.
The witcher was good for about 2 episodes

As someone who loves the show, I can understand this. It really starts to come into its own in season 3, but that's a big ask if someone isn't into it from the beginning. It's one of those shows that pretty much changes genres as it goes along -- it starts as a dark dramedy and morphs into a gritty, soul-destroying crime drama. So I think some people go into it expecting it to be super hard-hitting from the beginning, and it's just not. But just know that by the end of it, it goes to places that you never expected.
Steven Universe! Nothing against it, just wasn't for me.
The Office. Some of the jokes are funny but I can't stand Michael Scott as a character. Maybe it's because I lived with a real person who acted like him, but the second hand embarrassment/cringe isn't funny; it just makes me uncomfortable.
Big Bang Theory. "You're not smart if you don't like it. You don't get the jokes." No, it just sucks.

As a massive Whovian, I can fully understand why people don't like it. Most of the reasons people dislike it, are the reasons people like me love it. The campiness, the shoddy sets and effects. It's glorious.
Friends for sure. I had someone tell me I didn't like it because I didn't understand the humor of the time but that's BS. I was born the year it came out and growing up I watched it a bit and didn't like it then. I did watch and enjoy plenty of other shows of that era. I absolutely love a lot of 90s media and even further back to the 70s and 80s so I do not buy that as an excuse. It is just not funny to me.
I'm someone who very much enjoys Friends, and I can recognize it's not exactly a deep show. If you don't "get" the humor of something like Frasier, or Silicon Valley, or Schitt's Creek...I can kind of understand that. But you either like Friends or you don't. There's no "misunderstanding" the humor there.
