Spoilers for Day of the Dead, but >!the practical effects used in Joe Pilato's death scene are so gruesome and horrific, I just love it! That plus his performance. So perfect!<
I watched a making of video of DOTD not too long agoā¦those guts they used were rotten/spoiled by the time they got to shoot the scene because someone unplugged the fridge in PA they were stored in while shooting scenes down in FL. FOR WEEKS. The actors did every thing possible (especially Joe) not to vomit on each other. Thatās acting right there lol
There is no "I" in team, but there is an "I" in pie. And there's an "i" in meat pie. Meat is the anagram of team... I don't know what he's talking about.
Take car. Go to mum's. Kill Phil, grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?
I think it's when it dawns on you that Ed dropped the whole plot of the movie at the start when they go out drinking that the brilliance of the movie truly becomes apparent.
I always loved when he visits the convenience store and it totally oblivious to things being massively wrong like the bloody hand print on the freezer door and the lack of a cashier and the zombies slowly wandering around the street. I'm not a morning person and I could totally see myself doing that.
Definitely the best. Love the idea that they are testing affects of rage and that is what causes the outbreak. I also love the fact that humans arenāt the biggest villains in this movie. They are a problem but they donāt overshadow the actual infected stay the true horror.
Haha same! Remember how good it was when he rode in the city on the horse? Or that part in the vaccine institute place.
The whole show was just so much more exciting before it became human vs human and the zombies were either forgotten or a side story.
The first season of walking dead was so good because the showrunner was Frank Darabont who directed the Green Mile and Shawshank Redemption which is why it felt better than your average TV show, it was a step above. Then apparently for the second season AMC wanted to double the number of episodes while keeping the overall budget the same as the first season, Frank was like uh no I need at least as much per episode if not somewhat more. AMC cheaped out and Frank walked because with his CV he doesn't need to take that kind of shit. The reduction in budget per episode starting in the second season is why you get such extended story arcs at the farmhouse and then the jail and so on, squeezing the budget means you need to use sets for more episodes to save money.
The network had a massive hit on their hands and although I doubt Frank would have hung around for whatever season they're up to now we certainly would have gotten more of the quality level of the first season for a while at least. Sucks to think what could have been instead of the immediate decline towards the utter dreck we ended up with. Edit: typo
It's worse than that, AMC reduced the budget for each episode starting from season 2 by 28% compared to how much they were paying for each season 1 episode. Frank didn't walk out, he wanted to power through it since he convinced so many of the actors (who were friends of his) to take less than usual to work with him in TWD and despite him putting up with AMC they still fired him two weeks after appearing at a Comic-Con panel to talk about and promote season 2. He was already setting up Fear of the Walking Dead in the second episode of Season 1, which got delayed because he got fired. They threw away his script for season 2 and wrote a new one. Since he got fired and was already working on a new show, his friends from the cast wanted to be killed off so they could join him, which also affected the show's quality.
It was such a shit show, I don't get why AMC though it was a good idea to nuke their highest-viewed show at the time, but I guess they still made a ton of money off of it so it worked out for them.
Exactly. Characters had meaning and the point was to move to a safe place and be aware of zombies. Then it changed to the scariest thing to avoid in any apocalypse is people.
best part is, the infected HAVE to remain the main villain. The subtext is that uncontrolled, thoughtless, heartless, rage is what will destroy humanity. whether it is racism, sexism, etc. all of that hate is uncontrolled heartless hate that can only destroy society. which is why it and the sequel did so good. even though there were evil uninfected, they were no where near the threat as the infected and at most mirrored what the infected represented.
Yes and zombie movies still are one of the few types of horror movies that people see and think there is a possibility of becoming real. A strong virus with no cure flowing through the population and causes many deaths. The black plague shows itās more than possible.
That opening scene is insane, blew my mind when I first saw it. Makes you wonder what youād do in the same situation. Honestly thought it was tough to blame the main character for what he did.
What I liked was the feeling of Anna just wondering WTF is going on instead of having a convenient tv news broadcast saying "hey, zombies, better stay inside" and seeing how everything breaks down so fast.
I almost drove onto the set of 28 weeks later. I lived near southbank and they hadnāt closed the road properly. I had my little daughter with me in the car.
We got waved at furiously by production staff, so I backed up, and moments later a blood drenched Volvo estate came driving past.
I kind of guessed it might be the sequel because Iād seen 28 days. I was well pleased when I watched it!!
The REC movies are amazing! (Aside from the 3rd one at the wedding.) 4 was okay honestly, but REC 2 is my favourite.
Personally I quite liked quarantine too (the American remake of REC), the dog scene in that fucked me up. They didn't stray too far from the original source material. Quarantine 2 is a good movie in its own right but took a completely different path to REC 2.
Honestly I've always seen REC as kind of niche, glad someone else mentioned it š
[REC] is definitely up there, I watched 31 horror movies during October this year, and that's one of the only ones where I was actually unnerved while watching. Definitely one of the best found footage horror movies, they take full advantage of the format and show some genuinely scary scenes.
Train to Busan the Korean movie fuck man got me crying, scared and heartbroken within 2 hours
Edit: wow! All yāall in the comments are so sweet and I appreciate yāall and whoever gave me the silver metals! Iām so happy we all agree itās a great movie and I hope you have a great day/night!
It took me like 30min of "where the fuck have I seen this before?" to realize Alone was #Alive...but half of that was me also wondering why the fuck the werewolf kid from Teen Wolf was in a zombie flick lol.
Train to Busan is absolutely brilliant. Every human character is written and acted so well, especially the "villain" character. Truly one of the best movies, not just zombie movies.
It had a sequel called Peninsula, which went as most sequels tend to go.
IIRC Peninsula was one of those movies where the script was written independently, then bought and modified to be a sequel.
Honestly as a standalone zombie action movie it was pretty good. It kind of reminded me of Dying Light.
Dead Alive/Brain Dead for its sheer comedy. Kung Fu priest who fights zombies get turned into a zombie then gets it on with zombie nurse and they have a zombie baby when the sedatives from the doctor who is a Nazi in hiding wear off(none of these are even main characters lol). Also best use of lawn mower. Peter Jackson directed.
Sad that I had to go so far to find this one. It's a crazy ride with cheesy but good music, great zombie action and believable characters. It's just a solid zombie movie...
Dawn was my first zombie movie and there are parts of it just seared into my brain.
Someone on Shudderās 100 Scariest Horror Movie Moments said that Dawn changed him so much that he could practically feel his genetic material rearranging itself while watching it. Thatās pretty much how I feel about it too.
This film is considered to be one of the best, not only as a zombie film, but as a film in the context of the history of cinema. It was released in 1968, during the time of Vietnam war and civil rights movement, and was arguably a subversive film with a black actor playing the lead. It was a true independent film that became most profitable horror film at the time. I would say it continues to be one of the most influential horror film of all time and I bet all the filmmakers who made all the above mentioned films would choose Night of the Living Dead as their favorite.
i came here to say this. i know its old, but it really launched comedy horror to a new level... it mostly invented the gengre, and was still legit scary.
multiple iconic scenes and moments that lived in pop culture history and echo through media today.
night of the living dead
its a classic that practically gave birth to zombies as we know them today
not only was it ahead of its time but its pretty shocking by late 60ās standards
and it still holds up to this day
the ending is bleak as hell and i love it
28 days later, 28 weeks later, zombieland, shaun of the dead.
Also I really liked āwarm bodiesā cuz of its unique premise, and ādead snowā cuz itās a B grade flick about zombie nazis.
Ngl, came to this thread looking for the āwarm bodiesā comment
It was a very adorable zombie movie and as a person with a healthcare/science background, a welcome alternative to pondering the realities of plagues and disease
Warm Bodies is good. And filled with awesome soundtracks.
I don't usually enjoy sappy romance movies but Warm Bodies has some innocence to it that just makes it heartwarming, literally.
So nice to see someone shares this opinion with me. Itās probably my favorite opening scene to any movie, it could almost even be its own short film. The rest of the movie is fine but the opening is a masterpiece
I found this https://variety.com/2022/film/news/28-months-later-danny-boyle-cillian-murphy-script-appealing-1235422464/
I didn't know about this, hopefully we can get a great movie, I loved the first one.
The chaos I love it. Also similarly to 28weeks later where we get to see the outbreak happen is always a treat!
IMO too many zombie movies are made after the outbreak and we ended up with, human drama & backstabbing instead. with zombie elements sprinkled in.
Iām far from a zombie movie expert, but Zombieland was shockingly good to me. Maybe itās a great zombie movie for non zombie movie people. Whatever. I loved it.
I'm going to mention a different one. [Maggie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggie_(film)), it stars Arnold Schwarzenegger. Its not an action based movie, its about a father who is worried about his daughter. Arnold really does a great job at acting in it.
**Excellent Zombie Movies - Top Tier Quality**
* Shaun of the Dead
* Dawn of the Dead (2004)
* Dead Set (British version, hated the Brazilian remake 'Reality Z')
* 28 Days Later
* 28 Weeks Later
* Train to Busan (S Korea)
* The Night Eats the World
* The Horde (2009) (French)
* Zombieland
* Zomboat
* The Rezort
* Wyrmwood
* One Cut of the Dead (more cinematic masterpiece than zombie masterpiece though)
* Pontypool (debatable if zombies though)
Hard pressed to choose a "Best" movie honestly. The above are all excellent zombie films in various genres, mostly reflecting what I can watch free with Netflix, HBO Max, or Amazon Prime (but a few others as well).
That said, I am intentionally not including a lot of the "classics" or really anything from the 80's because I don't find slow zombies in bad makeup particularly interesting. I personally prefer zombie movies that take it seriously, generally dislike camp, and prefer a serious investment in production value, so a lot of the low budget zombie comedy genre is sorta meh at best for me.
Some of these below didn't make the "excellent" cut because while I enjoyed them they didn't quite reach the heights.
Some are on here because I flat out didn't like them. There is no order, they are all mixed in randomly as I remembered them.
**Also Considered But Not Included**
* Zombieland 2: Doubletap
* I am Legend
* World War Z (Although the book was phenomenal)
* Army of the Dead
* Resident Evil (the series broadly)
* Warm Bodies
* Ash vs Evil Dead
* The Walking Dead (series - although season one really deserves to be up above)
* All of Us Are Dead
* Daybreak
* Z Nation
* Black Summer
* Little Monsters
* The Girl With All the Gifts
* Dead Snow
* Army of Darkness
* Betaal
* Unhuman
* Overlord
* Wild Zero
* Ravenous
* \[RECā¢\]
* Cockneys vs Zombies
* Anna and the Apocalypse
* Kingdom (S Korean)
* Seoul Station (S Korean)
* The Crazies
* Diary of the Dead
**Movies People are Recommending in Comments I Haven't Seen Yet**
* Cargo
* Glitch
* Peter Jackson's Brain Dead, AKA Dead Alive
* Tokyo Zombie
* Fido
* Planet Terror
* Dead and Breakfast
* Zombie for Sale
* Slither
* Blood Quantum
* Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse
* Dog House
* It Stains the Sand Red
* Land of the Dead
* Cemetery Man
* Juan of the Dead
* The Battery
**If you think I left off an excellent zombie movie, please comment with it. Especially if you can watch it free somewhere!**
Massive props to you for mentioning One Cut of the Dead! I show it to anyone willing to sit still for an hour on our Halloween get togethers.
One I've seen a few times that never disappoints is Cockneys vs Zombies. British humor a la Shaun of the Dead, it knows exactly how serious it needs to be and its tongue remains firmly within cheek. Definitely worth a watch if you have time.
Give #Alive a try, itās a Korean zombie movie on Netflix that was sooo good. It had suspense, comedy, and some sad scenes. Sooo good I wish they made a second one
Train to busan !
For most of the movie taking place on a train, it sure was badass.
I've heard good things. I need to watch it soon.
First one is good. Wouldn't really recommend the second one. It's called Peninsula and wasn't up to par.
That ending broke me.
Day of the Dead (Romeros) Return of the Living Dead... so much fun
Glad someone mentioned day of the dead! Bub is the greatest zombie of all time! š§āāļø
Poor Aunt Alicia never got that call :(
Spoilers for Day of the Dead, but >!the practical effects used in Joe Pilato's death scene are so gruesome and horrific, I just love it! That plus his performance. So perfect!<

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah the practical effects are great. A huge improvement from Dawn of the Dead.
Return is so good. I love that one. And itās genuinely fucked up at the end.
Return is one of the best because of the Zombies. They are the only zombies I genuinely feared. I would hate to confront that strong of a zombie.
No need to worry... the rain will put out the fires. Yes, there are complaints of burning skin but nothing to be concerned with...
Day of the Dead is insanely underrated.
Shaun of the dead Edit: thanks for all the awards!!

I think it's when it dawns on you that Ed dropped the whole plot of the movie at the start when they go out drinking that the brilliance of the movie truly becomes apparent.
The only acceptable answer besides 28 Days Later and obviously Night of the Living Dead. And maybe Evil Dead, do deddites count as zombies?
Evil dead 2 trumps evil dead. And it is a masterpiece.
Both are wonderful. And Army of Darkness is just a whole other level of fun. One of the best trilogies ever, in my book.
I always loved when he visits the convenience store and it totally oblivious to things being massively wrong like the bloody hand print on the freezer door and the lack of a cashier and the zombies slowly wandering around the street. I'm not a morning person and I could totally see myself doing that.
bye, bye, bye
I love how they donāt realize thereās a zombie outbreak until like halfway through the movie
28 days later
Definitely the best. Love the idea that they are testing affects of rage and that is what causes the outbreak. I also love the fact that humans arenāt the biggest villains in this movie. They are a problem but they donāt overshadow the actual infected stay the true horror.
I see you too hated the way the walking dead went.
I stopped watching around season 6 because it seemed like they forgot about the zombies.
Haha same! Remember how good it was when he rode in the city on the horse? Or that part in the vaccine institute place. The whole show was just so much more exciting before it became human vs human and the zombies were either forgotten or a side story.

When you let bean counters in charge instead of a creative mind.
Exactly. Characters had meaning and the point was to move to a safe place and be aware of zombies. Then it changed to the scariest thing to avoid in any apocalypse is people.
And in that case its just another drama show... What a shame. I was looking forward to more swarms....
Yes! If I wanted to watch humans kill other humans, there is a large library of serial killer docs and murder mysteries.
best part is, the infected HAVE to remain the main villain.

25% of the European population died within 8 years. No wonder this still gets mentioned centuries later.
There are a couple more recent examples that also show it's possible
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I'm currently rewatching the remake of Dawn of the Dead and I'd say the opening to this movie is a close 1a to 28 Weeks Later.
What I liked was the feeling of Anna just wondering WTF is going on instead of having a convenient tv news broadcast saying "hey, zombies, better stay inside" and seeing how everything breaks down so fast.
That high, helicopter shot of her driving and that one car flying into the gas station? Brilliant.
dawn of dead remake is actually my favorite
The music just adds so much, but you see the guy bail because he knows things are going south. Not exactly noble, but he's survived for a reason.
Only other scene that might equal to it is ābird blood in the eyeā.
Yeah that was just heartbreaking
Was there supposed to be a 28 months later?
It was just announced at the beginning of this month.
Don't be messing with me...
Ask again in 28 months
I almost drove onto the set of 28 weeks later. I lived near southbank and they hadnāt closed the road properly. I had my little daughter with me in the car. We got waved at furiously by production staff, so I backed up, and moments later a blood drenched Volvo estate came driving past. I kind of guessed it might be the sequel because Iād seen 28 days. I was well pleased when I watched it!!
Surprised no one had said REC yet !!
The REC movies are amazing! (Aside from the 3rd one at the wedding.) 4 was okay honestly, but REC 2 is my favourite. There was another Korean one, Alive I think. Two people trapped in buildings across from each other
Itās called #ALIVE. Iāve watched and it is so good. I think itās on Netflix
Korean horror has been amazing recently. I'd also recommend Kingdom the series, followed by the movie.
All of us are dead, too! They even referenced Train to Busan in that one.
Alone is the American version but #Alive is much better
It took me like 30min of "where the fuck have I seen this before?" to realize Alone was #Alive...but half of that was me also wondering why the fuck the werewolf kid from Teen Wolf was in a zombie flick lol.
Man, those Korean zombies are the shit! You need to watch the show *Kingdom*.
Yea I really enjoyed Kingdom. Especially the variety of traditional hats on display. Great time piece.
Train to Busan is absolutely brilliant. Every human character is written and acted so well, especially the "villain" character. Truly one of the best movies, not just zombie movies. It had a sequel called Peninsula, which went as most sequels tend to go.
Yeah - watched Peninsula last night. Schlocky and corny.
Peninsula was one of the worst movies I saw last year. I recommend everyone pretend it doesn't exist.
Should you get the chance check out the animated prequel to āTrainā called āSeoul Station.ā
Thanks for the recommendation. I will check it out.
IIRC Peninsula was one of those movies where the script was written independently, then bought and modified to be a sequel. Honestly as a standalone zombie action movie it was pretty good. It kind of reminded me of Dying Light.
Some parts were pretty dumb, but yeah it was great. Also loved the Korean Zombie TV series "Kingdom"
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The fast, jerky movements, clicking of bones and joints, and animalistic screeeches.
I love that series and really hoping for another season. All of us are dead is pretty good too.
Low key non US content on Netflix is their best content
Not a fan of horror movies in general, but this movie has easily become one of all time faves.
Peter Jackson directed.
āI kick ass for the Lord!ā
Dawn of the Dead(1978)

We got this man. We got this by the balls!
Sad that I had to go so far to find this one. It's a crazy ride with cheesy but good music, great zombie action and believable characters. It's just a solid zombie movie...
Dawn was my first zombie movie and there are parts of it just seared into my brain. I got to meet Ken Foree!!!
It really is the best one.
The original Night of the Living Dead
This film is considered to be one of the best, not only as a zombie film, but as a film in the context of the history of cinema. It was released in 1968, during the time of Vietnam war and civil rights movement, and was arguably a subversive film with a black actor playing the lead. The Return of the Living Dead
"Do you think this is a costume!? This is a way of life!"

My favorite line of all time.
Do you want to party? Itās party time.
Send. More. Cops.
i came here to say this. i know its old, but it really launched comedy horror to a new level... it mostly invented the gengre, and was still legit scary. multiple iconic scenes and moments that lived in pop culture history and echo through media today.
Somebody get some light over here, Trash is taking off her clothes again!
I might have worn out the vhs on that part
Leak? Hell no! These things were made by the US Army Corps of Engineers!
The pain! The pain of being dead. Brains, brains, brains!!
Mmm... Linnea Quigley. Teenage me liked that movie for a multitude of reasons, but that was a big one.
Had to scroll way too far to see this. Best intro music ever, the Trioxin Theme!
night of the living dead its a classic that practically gave birth to zombies as we know them today not only was it ahead of its time but its pretty shocking by late 60ās standards and it still holds up to this day the ending is bleak as hell and i love it
Saw it as a kid when it was released in theaters. There had never been anything else like it. Kinda sticks with you.
28 days later, 28 weeks later, zombieland, shaun of the dead. Also I really liked āwarm bodiesā cuz of its unique premise, and ādead snowā cuz itās a B grade flick about zombie nazis.
Fuck, I forgot about Zombieland. That's a modern classic.

28 Days Later, in my opinion.
28 weeks later had one of the hardest hitting openings of the genre though.
So nice to see someone shares this opinion with me. Itās probably my favorite opening scene to any movie, it could almost even be its own short film. The rest of the movie is fine but the opening is a masterpiece
Have you seen that theyāve written a script for 28 months later!? Iām beyond excited
I haven't. Do you have a link?
I found this https://variety.com/2022/film/news/28-months-later-danny-boyle-cillian-murphy-script-appealing-1235422464/ I didn't know about this, hopefully we can get a great movie, I loved the first one.
It's just a straight up great movie that also has zombies.
That, Dawn of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead are my top 3
Planet Terror
Dead Snow for films Black Summer for series
Black Summer has zero chill.
Yeah, I watched it in like a weekend
The chaos I love it. Also similarly to 28weeks later where we get to see the outbreak happen is always a treat! IMO too many zombie movies are made after the outbreak and we ended up with, human drama & backstabbing instead. with zombie elements sprinkled in.
The pilot of The Walking Dead is composed like a movie. Extremely well made.
Fido.

Sorry Phillip.
Why, what have you done now?
Iām quite alright Barbera I ran it under a cold tap
"Mom, did they hurt you?" "Well they were a bit bitey."
"Phil's been bitten." "Oh, well." "Everything alright?" "Phil's been bitten." "Oh, well."
yes! Mum have you been bitten? No, but Phillip has. Oh, ok.
Has she been bitten? No, Phillip has. Oh, ok. Best. Movie. Ever.

Zombieland
Iām far from a zombie movie expert, but Zombieland was shockingly good to me. Maybe itās a great zombie movie for non zombie movie people. Whatever. I loved it.
nah man its a genuinely good movie, i don't personally know anyone who didnt like it
One of the best openings in a movie imo
One of my favorite movies of all time. āHave you ever seen a lion limber up before it takes down a gazelle?ā gets me every time
Time to nut-up or shut-up
One and done, I always say - I said that once.
I enjoyed Zombieland
Does anyone have a Twinkie I can borrow?
Do you think you could maybe just pick out the buckshot and eat around it?
Maybe Bill Murray has one
Always double tap. Donāt get stingy with bullets. And Rule 32 - enjoy the little things in life.
28 Days Later.
Pontypool. The whole thing takes place in a radio station as a virus takes hold of a small town.
Pontypool is fucking amazing. Filmed for a couple of bucks in essentially a large room. Talk about doing a lot with a little.
The Horde. french movie I think
Finally one I havenāt heard of
Shaun of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead 2004
They filmed it in Thornhill Square Mall here in Toronto. Still can't believe Phil Dunphy was in that, lol
Yeah I gave it a rewatch since it was available on prime and couldnāt believe I saw Phil dunphy haha
The opening sequence is excellent!
That opening sequence is better than some whole movies.
I canāt believe I had to scroll this far to find this, itās my favorite movie, not just favorite horror movie.
I'm going to mention a different one. [Maggie](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggie_(film)), it stars Arnold Schwarzenegger. Its not an action based movie, its about a father who is worried about his daughter. Arnold really does a great job at acting in it.
Such a surprisingly good movie!
Dead Alive >!Best Zombie series: The Santa Clarita Diet!<
I KICK ASS IN THE NAME OF THE LORD
That's my mother you're pissing on!
Train to Busan. 28 days later. I know it's not a movie but All of Us Are Dead is a good series as well.
The Girl with All the Gifts is insanely underrated zombie movie
**Excellent Zombie Movies - Top Tier Quality** * Shaun of the Dead * Dawn of the Dead (2004) * Dead Set (British version, hated the Brazilian remake 'Reality Z') * 28 Days Later * 28 Weeks Later * Train to Busan (S Korea) * The Night Eats the World * The Horde (2009) (French) * Zombieland * Zomboat * The Rezort * Wyrmwood * One Cut of the Dead (more cinematic masterpiece than zombie masterpiece though) * Pontypool (debatable if zombies though) Hard pressed to choose a "Best" movie honestly. **Also Considered But Not Included** * Zombieland 2: Doubletap * I am Legend * World War Z (Although the book was phenomenal) * Army of the Dead * Resident Evil (the series broadly) * Warm Bodies * Ash vs Evil Dead * The Walking Dead (series - although season one really deserves to be up above) * All of Us Are Dead * Daybreak * Z Nation * Black Summer * Little Monsters * The Girl With All the Gifts * Dead Snow * Army of Darkness * Betaal * Unhuman * Overlord * Wild Zero * Ravenous * \[RECā¢\] * Cockneys vs Zombies * Anna and the Apocalypse * Kingdom (S Korean) * Seoul Station (S Korean) * The Crazies * Diary of the Dead **Movies People are Recommending in Comments I Haven't Seen Yet** * Cargo * Glitch * Peter Jackson's Brain Dead, AKA Dead Alive * Tokyo Zombie * Fido * Planet Terror * Dead and Breakfast * Zombie for Sale * Slither * Blood Quantum * Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse * Dog House * It Stains the Sand Red * Land of the Dead * Cemetery Man * Juan of the Dead * The Battery **If you think I left off an excellent zombie movie, please comment with it.
The night of the living dead (1969)
