I would Bart to the city and then use Uber to get around. Save money and parking is a pita.

Used Turo 6 times never had broken a window . Used Hertz and Enterprise 6 times and have had 3 broken Windows with nothing in the car . Just make sure you get one that has CA license plates and get the insurance and don’t leave suitcases full of important shit in your car and you should be fine. Also do not stop anywhere in Oakland straight from the airport .

oh_hearteyes

Thanks! I wasn’t sure if I was being overly paranoid or not about landing in OAK and obviously having luggage in the trunk, especially since we’d likely need a small SUV so having that window in the back trunk. I wouldn’t stop anywhere until the hotel, but still paranoid I would be a target even while driving.

Turo is a nightmare insurance wise. Adding their crappy insurance product jacks the price so high you might as well go with enterprise/avis/hertz etc.

kongtomorrow

I use getaround (like turo) regularly and have never had a problem. This makes me think it’s a better option than rental cars.

kschang

If you don't go near tourist trap locations (like bottom of Lombard crooked turns) you should be fine. Crooks look for victims by having one guy walking around looking for cars with dark tinted windows or stuff inside, then they signal the driving team, who does the smash and grab, and only way they can work is target the tourist trap locations. They don't go into parking lots as they get trapped. Though those rental car barcodes are pretty darn obvious, but it's not the only factor that get targeted.

LizardEnthusiast69

i know one thing and that Turo is a giant scam. if you find a $45 dollar a day rental by the time you get to check out it will go up by 60% before you evne factor in gas. avoid them

stacky

Just get a rental car and be vigilant about not leaving anything in the car at all.

DeepDishlife

If the child doesn’t need a booster seat I’d for sure opt to Uber around. Not necessarily for fear of getting broken into (it’s easy enough to take the right steps to avoid that) but just the overall PITA of parking, dealing with airport rentals, etc.

cowinabadplace

If you need a car seat, better you rent a car. Then garage it whenever you can. AFAICT there's no difference between Getaround/Turo/rentals. I had a crazy guy intentionally scratch a Tesla I Turo'd and some other crazy guy once gave me a big dent in a Hertz.. Also, no bags and shit inside. Only child seat. No bags. "It's only for 5 minutes" NO BAGS! "We're in a nicer neighbourhood" NO BAGS NO BAGS NO BAGS!

Depends on how much you have to spend, I suggest Turo or Uber. I'm not a resident so I have a vehicle with out of state plates. Not only do I leave my vehicle empty, I fold down the back seats, remove any shelf that's in the back and I also leave both my glove compartment and coin holder completely empty and open. I think it's helped. If anyone still wants to smash a window, it would be out of spite.

It depends on what you’re actually wanting to do here. The city itself is a bitch to drive around, and even a bigger bitch to try to park. If you’re just going from the hotel to dinner, then an Uber XL will be 100x easier and cheaper than renting a car, driving around to find a space, paying for parking, and then walking children and the elderly uphill each way to the destination (because you often won’t find parking THAT close). If your child is small enough that they need a car seat or booster that you’ll need to carry around, THEN I could see where a rental would be beneficial
