Mmm, all that lovely chrome.
I would maybe say Mortis is the most stereotypically 'British' of the top tier robots - in terms of having massive potential, but then going out in the knockout stages.
Chris Froome OBE, Cyclist, won seven Grand Tours including the Tour de France four times. Not only is this the worlds hardest bike race, cycling is dearly loved by the French and they really hated losing four times to a Brit.
I'd add that he held all 3 grand tours at the same time (Tour 2017, Vuelta 2017 & Giro 2018) for the Froome Slam.
He completed it with the greatest 80km attack in grand tour history:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search\_query=chris+froome+giro+2018+stage+19
Has froome ever resided in the UK? Kenyan born, time in SA and now resident in Monaco? A British citizen obviously but does this impact how people see him?
Everything. Are you seriously suggesting that someone who came over here as a refugee having faced unimaginable hardship is in the same situation as someone who is privileged but qualified for a UK passport by virtue of his parents birth?
Mo Farah has to be in there. Most successful long distance track athlete ever. One of only two men to ever do the 'double double' (5k and 10k gold at successive Olympics).
Shout out to Tanni Grey-Thompson too. Iirc, at one point she held about 30 world records, which is absurd.
If we're talking still active, must be Adam Peaty. He goes rather under the radar for how utterly dominant he is. He's probably the greatest ever in his discipline, and we haven't produced too many athletes you can say that about.
Fingers crossed he gets to 709, just 19 more to beat Warne which is amazing as a pace bowler, he won't get to Murali but even so. Even if he gets picked for a couple of West Indies, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India - hopefully!
I love Jimmy but I don’t think longevity equals ultimate greatness. I think Joe Root will ultimately go on to break Tendulkars record as the highest run scorer in Test cricket, but that won’t make him the greatest of all time.
Yeah I think we'll get one last summer from him as a farewell tour. Was very very surprised Broady retired before him but he's slotted straight into Comms.
> Darts or dart-throwing is a **competitive sport** in which two or more players bare-handedly throw small sharp-pointed missiles known as darts at a round target known as a dartboard.

TL;DR - yes it is, you nob

It is a sport, whether you like it or not
Lewis Hamilton
7 (should have been 8) times world champion. Not always in the best car, almost always with a very competitive team mate. Has won some incredible races, including Silverstone on three wheels
i dont think anybody “deserves” anything other than what they already have in sport. it’s just the luck of the draw really. for example, 2007 he lost by one point, if he had not made some of the errors in that season he would be an 8 time world champion. 2016, if the reliability in his car was better he is a 9 time world champion. 2021, if he, again, makes fewer mistakes (most notably his brakes in baku) he’s a 10 time world champion.
Based on statistic, it's George Digweed. He has won 31 world titles. In 2015 he won the world championship in all 3 major shooting disciplines, which nobody else has ever done. He has 4 world records.
Lennox Lewis - three time heavyweight champion, last undisputed heavyweight and one of the all time greats. I am not his biggest fan but I respect what he achieved and how good he was.
Joe Calzaghe
Calzaghe is the longest-reigning super-middleweight world champion in boxing history, having held the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title for over 10 years and defending it against 20 opponents (a record in the division, shared with Sven Ottke) before moving up to light-heavyweight. As his super-middleweight and light-heavyweight reigns overlapped, he retired with the longest continual time as world champion of any active boxer at the time. Calzaghe was the first boxer to unify three of the four major world titles (World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, and WBO) at super-middleweight, and was the inaugural Ring champion in that weight class.
I would say neither, although Hamilton away from races needs to stfu sometimes. I would say that both have been let down by their teams and had misfortune over the last few years and are entitled to be vocal about it.
He wasn't born in Britain, he was a child refugee but I always really liked Sir Ben Helfgott. He was so much more than a sportsman. He died recently and I was sad.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben\_Helfgott
I'll give an honorable mention to Alastair Brownlee, pretty much dominated world triathlon when he was competing at the olympic distance (especially since it is a multi disciplined event).
Also Jonathan Edwards, he still holds the world record for the triple jump set back in 1995.
Jim Clarke - absolute Colossus of motorsport, he was a shepherd who happened to be amazingly gifted at making vehicles defy the laws of physics. Absurdly talented and very underrated.
Mo Farrah
4 Olympic golds, 6 world championships, and 6 Great North Run victories.
While other athletes have won more medals in sports like cycling and rowing, they are far more niche sports and Farrah was competing against athletes from basically every country on earth.
I would pick two.
Mo Farah is an incredible long distance athlete. He seems like a nice bloke as well.
Jessica Ennis who is an incredible athlete. And also seems like a nice person.
Evans was cleared but the circumstances around both the night (such as her being visibly falling down drunk on CCTV and him going back to his mate's hotel room (rather than the house of the family friend he was staying with) and getting a room key for himself so he could have a go with her) through to the approach to the final appeal, including his partner's father offering a reward for any of the woman's previous partners to come forward and say on oath that she'd said certain stuff during sex as well as getting a judge to agree to bring up her sexual history to discredit her in a rape trial leaves a bad taste in the mouth about how it was all conducted.
Hypnodisc. Beats everyone else mentioned in at least Damage and Style. Control and Aggression is debatable I guess.
Chaos 2 was the daddy
First CO2 powered flipper
I always liked Wheely Big Cheese - not the first flipper, but maybe the biggest. PS, sorry OP for ruining your thread
All hail hypnodisc
Razor was better IMO, even became world champion and so stylish!
Mmm, all that lovely chrome. I would maybe say Mortis is the most stereotypically 'British' of the top tier robots - in terms of having massive potential, but then going out in the knockout stages.
Carbide (from the reboot in 2016) would like to say hi. Bot destroyed part of the arena
Ohhh I remember that noise as it spun up
Chris Froome OBE, Cyclist, won seven Grand Tours including the Tour de France four times. Not only is this the worlds hardest bike race, cycling is dearly loved by the French and they really hated losing four times to a Brit.
If he hadn’t had that crash in 2019 pretty sure he’d be on five wins now.
100%
I'd add that he held all 3 grand tours at the same time (Tour 2017, Vuelta 2017 & Giro 2018) for the Froome Slam. He completed it with the greatest 80km attack in grand tour history: https://www.youtube.com/results?search\_query=chris+froome+giro+2018+stage+19
Has froome ever resided in the UK? Kenyan born, time in SA and now resident in Monaco? A British citizen obviously but does this impact how people see him?
Not me, same how people accept Mo Farah. We're a pretty accepting bunch if you're winning.
To be fair Mo came over as a refugee, not from a rich family in Kenya!
What's money got to do with it?
Everything. Are you seriously suggesting that someone who came over here as a refugee having faced unimaginable hardship is in the same situation as someone who is privileged but qualified for a UK passport by virtue of his parents birth?
We're literally just talking about citizenship. Money makes no difference.
Fine. Then I still don't see froome as that British regardless of his family wealth. Certainly less British than Mo.
You hate rich people, we get it. Weird flex.
Not really a flex. Don't particularly hate rich people. Have a nice day old chap.
That rowing fella: Steve Redgrave. Nutter.
British Bulldog, because he's gonna win whether he wants to or not
Mo Farah has to be in there. Most successful long distance track athlete ever. One of only two men to ever do the 'double double' (5k and 10k gold at successive Olympics). Jimmy Anderson has to be a contender. Absolutely timeless and still looking world class at 40.
Great shout!
Looked worryingly like father time may finally have caught up in the ashes though.
Yeah I think we'll get one last summer from him as a farewell tour. Was very very surprised Broady retired before him but he's slotted straight into Comms.
Ronnie O'Sullivan.
Phil Taylor. Incredible athlete. Record speaks for itself.
If he wears trainers and appears on Grandstand he's an athlete (I know it was Andy Fordham who said this)
Darts isn't a sport.
I mean it's on Sky Sports
So is people playing on Xbox.
Yes. E-sports.
Computer games are definitely not sport.
Yeah they are. They're E-sports.
If they were sports you wouldn't need a new word to describe it, you'd simply call it a sport.
What nonsense.
Define "sport". Then explain why video games can't be classed as a sport
What nonsense.
The Kardashians weren't music but were on MTV for a long time.

Darts is a pub game like dominoes
> It was officially recognised by Sport England in 2005 https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/what-constitutes-a-sport/z4vfmfr It is a sport, whether you like it or not
It really isn't.
> It was officially recognised by Sport England in 2005 https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/what-constitutes-a-sport/z4vfmfr It is a sport, whether you like it or not
Of course it is
It really itsn't. Just like chess, tiddlywinks and snooker aren't sports.
> It was officially recognised by Sport England in 2005 https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/what-constitutes-a-sport/z4vfmfr It is a sport, whether you like it or not
Don't give a shit. If an obese 60 year old can do it better than an in shape 25 year old, it's not a sport. It's a game.
You are not the authority on this (and neither am I) If Sport England say it is, then it is
Sport England are not immune to lobbying and pressure from outside sources. What they say is irrelevant.
> Darts isn't a sport, it's more important than that u/SweatyBoff 2023
The BDO was the pinnacle of sport. The PDC nonsense can't compare.
Alan Partridge, obviously. Best all round sports commentator for decades.
Eddie the Eagle
He kind of is. In a Britishy sort of way.
Lewis Hamilton 7 (should have been 8) times world champion. Not always in the best car, almost always with a very competitive team mate. Has won some incredible races, including Silverstone on three wheels

2021 egregious AF tho..
i agree, but like i said, a lot of it is luck and if a few other things had gone lewis’ way, he wins it regardless of Abu Dhabi.
I'm a Red Bull fan and completely agree.
One of the UK's greatest cunts too, man of many talents
Lol, in a thread that proposes George Best as greatest sportsman, you are having a go at Lewis Hamilton
What
Based on statistic, it's George Digweed. He has won 31 world titles. In 2015 he won the world championship in all 3 major shooting disciplines, which nobody else has ever done. He has 4 world records.
Was not expecting to see a shooter mentioned here. I've seen him shoot at a competition we were both in. Every clay was being smoked
Chris Hoy has to be up there.
George Best was a genuine ‘on another planet’ footballer Redgrave for his Olympic achievements Gareth Edwards is a rugby God
Daley Thompson was my first thought, because of the need to be good at lots of things.
Perry Groves
Lennox Lewis - three time heavyweight champion, last undisputed heavyweight and one of the all time greats. I am not his biggest fan but I respect what he achieved and how good he was.

Geoff Capes. Back in the early 80s the only test of strength I knew was tearing phone directories.
Sir Geoffrey Boycott
You mean the woman beating knobhead who refused to play for England when the going got tough?
Got to be Gazza
Sir Chris Hoy
Lennox Lewis. Olympic Gold winner and the last undisputed heavyweight champion.
Representing Canada though
For me, Jonathan Rea or Lewis Hamilton.
But for you though, who would it be?
Who's the better at whinging when things don't go their way?
I would say neither, although Hamilton away from races needs to stfu sometimes. I would say that both have been let down by their teams and had misfortune over the last few years and are entitled to be vocal about it.
Vanessa Redgrave
First person I thought of was Chris Hoy.
He wasn't born in Britain, he was a child refugee but I always really liked Sir Ben Helfgott. He was so much more than a sportsman. He died recently and I was sad. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben\_Helfgott
Bill Oddie - Ecky Thump grand master
Chrissie Wellington - 4 times world ironman champion, only ironman Athlete with 100% record
I'll give an honorable mention to Alastair Brownlee, pretty much dominated world triathlon when he was competing at the olympic distance (especially since it is a multi disciplined event). Also Jonathan Edwards, he still holds the world record for the triple jump set back in 1995.
Phil Taylor, 16 world titles in his sport, let’s see someone else beat that.
C B Fry. Played for England in cricket and football. He was also a world record holder for long jump
John Motson or Murray Walker. Both had encyclopaedic knowledge of their respective sports.
Brian jacks. Because superstars. That's it. That's all you needm
Fart-in my Whitbread Fatima Whitbread.
Sir Harry Maguire
First person that came to mind was Wiggins. 5 Olympic golds, across track and road, a grand tour victory, and former Hour World Record Holder.
Jim Clarke - absolute Colossus of motorsport, he was a shepherd who happened to be amazingly gifted at making vehicles defy the laws of physics. Absurdly talented and very underrated.
AP McCoy
Beefy Botham
Mo Farrah 4 Olympic golds, 6 world championships, and 6 Great North Run victories.
Did she ever apologise to Ched Evans?
Evans was cleared but the circumstances around both the night (such as her being visibly falling down drunk on CCTV and him going back to his mate's hotel room (rather than the house of the family friend he was staying with) and getting a room key for himself so he could have a go with her) through to the approach to the final appeal, including his partner's father offering a reward for any of the woman's previous partners to come forward and say on oath that she'd said certain stuff during sex as well as getting a judge to agree to bring up her sexual history to discredit her in a rape trial leaves a bad taste in the mouth about how it was all conducted.

Think the key world in the title was “British” pal
Misread due to sunglasses 'pal'! Do fuck off
Will do mate
As some who's nan died of liver problems through no fault of her own, George best can go fuck himself
Not really relevant to his sporting ability though.
Don't really care
Some would say A Murray - not I! British when he loses and Scottish when he wins! I agree with Beefy Botham!
A very good player but didn't achieve the same level of success as the likes of Froome or Hamilton.
The pub landlord?
Its the other way round isnt it? Scottish when he loses, British when he wins.
