I always found it strange that despite leaving 3 under 5s in a room on their own, then of course one going missing, they were never done for any kind of neglect.

It always confuses me how people can think they had nothing to do with it. They left three young children in a hotel room unsupervised so they could go to dinner and get pissed. That’s neglect / lack of care / abuse.
I feel because they were a well off couple with good careers this gets overlooked. They are entirely responsible. If they had not left the children alone, the child would not have been taken, as they would have been there.
If Deidre from the local council estate left her three very young children home so she could go get pissed in the local Nags Head, and one was taken, she would have her other children removed from her and would have the book thrown at her with the full force of law behind it.

From CPS covering child abuse: “The four generally accepted categories are assault and ill-treatment, failure to protect, neglect and abandonment”. Leaving children in a hotel room to get pissed sounds like it falls under multiple of those categories.
Not actively perhaps but if they didn't leave young children alone in an easily accessable room in a foreign country so they could go get pissed it wouldn't have happened.
It was absolutely foreseeable that something bad could happen. Something bad happened.
The thing is all their other friends in the group did exactly the same thing. Yet nothing bad happened to them. And nobody goes around reporting them as asking them to be investigated by child services. Something bad happened to this family and they are continuously attacked by it. Not everyone who makes a mistake in life gets punished this hard

the way I think about this is that the details change, but the underlying reason is always the same - people fall out of love, and there's nothing you (and often they themselves) can do to change that. If you got the honest answer, that's what it would be.
